The Minister of Industry, Trade Investment, Mr. Segun Aganga, says the Federal Government has to place emphasis on the growth of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises to enhance an inclusive economic growth. He said the government had identified seven key barriers hindering the growth of the MSMEs in the country and was already striving to address them one after the other. Aganga, who spoke at a Fidelity Bank SME Forum in Lagos, said, “For the first time in the history of this country, we have a government that is taking the MSME as one of the most important sectors of this economy; we are treating this area as a sector. We have a new programme called the National Enterprise Development Programme, which aims to remove all the barriers and work on what will enable businesses to grow. “We have raised it to the highest level; we have an MSME national council that is chaired by the vice president and has state governors, ministers and agencies. The whole idea is to accelerate the development of this sector, harmonise and have better coordination and institutionalise the support we give to the sector. For the first time in the history of the country, we now have states’ MSME council addressing those issues. “The seven issues are access to finance, access to market, linking innovation and technology to the SMEs in the country and industrial skill development. Again for the first time, we are now addressing each one of them and making life easier for the sector. So, we have a programme and if we are allowed to continue and finish the work, in four years time, there will be a complete change. That is what we need to do to have inclusive economic growth. That is what we must do to create jobs.” According to the minister, the Federal Government has reduced the cost of registering the SMEs by 60 per cent, a situation that has led to an increase of 52 per cent in the MSMEs moving from informal to formal sector. He noted that the Fidelity SME Forum was one of the important ways of communicating and engaging with the sector. Fidelity Bank, he said, had supported the SMEs, adding that the bank was among the top three banks in the country supporting the SMEs. “I encourage banks to support the SMEs. It is not about buying Treasury bills and bonds and making 10 per cent, you must be relevant to the Nigerian economy. You must play your role in terms of supporting the growth of the Nigerian economy; you must play your role in terms of job creation. That is the way that other countries are growing and our banks must do the same. Fidelity Bank has taken this to a different level,” Aganga said. The Chief Executive Officer, Fidelity Bank, Mr. Nnamdi Okonkwo, said the lender had brought Aganga to speak on the forum because “at different times, we have brought different people to the Fidelity SME Forum, but it gets to a point where you have to bring someone from the policy side, and that is why this minister that has been very supportive of the SMEs was brought to the forum. What we are doing corresponds with the Federal Government’s national development strategy.” Copyright PUNCH. |
The National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress ended in crisis on Thursday as participants failed to elect a new president to succeed Abdulwahed Omar. The election was progressing smoothly until some discrepancies were observed in the ballot papers. The discovery led to allegations that culminated in fisticuffs and throwing of chairs at each other by some of the delegates at the International Conference Centre, the venue of the conference in Abuja. One of our correspondents gathered that some of the delegates felt that the ballot papers were deliberately printed to facilitate the rigging of the election in favour of one of the candidates. The candidates are the NLC current National Treasurer, Ayuba Wabba; the Deputy President, Joe Ajaero, and the President, Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Achese Igwe who later stepped down. Some of the ballot papers, according to some of the delegates, had Wabba’s name in three places and Ajaero in two places. Others which did not have Ajaeros name on them also had no serial numbers. The delegates from Igwe’s constituency, NUPENG, were said to have called attention to the discrepancies in the ballot papers. When the argument over the issue degenerated, some of the delegates loyal to either Wabba or Ajaero, started hauling chairs at each other, thereby causing pandemonium at the venue. Others seized and destroyed the ballot boxes. Wabba seemed to have a brighter chance of being elected the next President of the congress until Tuesday when Igwe, who is also the NUPENG President, stepped down and declared support for Ajaero. Delegates loyal to Ajaero are of the view that the organisers of the election may have allowed deliberate errors in the ballot papers to pave the way for the election of Wabba. The leadership of the congress has however called a meeting of the National Administrative Council to decide on how to solve the crisis. Our correspondent, who was at the Labour House Headquarters of the NLC in Abuja, observed that the meeting was ongoing as of the time of filing this report. With the outcome of the delegates conference, the NLC appears to be heading for a major division. Investigations reveal that MHWUN, the NUEE and NUPENG contributed N423m, N320m and N159m, respectively to the congress between 2011 and June 2014. Source: Punchonline |

About 850 soldiers shortlisted for a counter- terrorism course at the Nigerian Army Training Centre in Kontagora, Niger State narrowly escaped death when they were ambushed by suspected members of the outlawed Boko Haram islamist sect. Four of them were however seriously injured in the incident which took place at a location between Okene and Lokoja, Kogi State on Sunday night. A security source said on Monday that the soldiers were men of the 322 Artillery Battalion, and the Fourth Brigade Garrison, Ekeunwa, Benin in Edo State. The PUNCH learnt that the 850 soldiers were expected to give fillip to the ongoing counter- terrorism operation in Borno and Adamawa states on completion of the counter- insurgency course. Our source said there were suspicions that the attackers were insurgents because of the intensity of the gunfire directed at the vans conveying the soldiers from both sides of the road. He added that the soldiers, who shot their way through the ambush, passed the night at the Nigeria Army formation in Lokoja. The four injured soldiers, according to him, were taken to a military facility in Lokoja while the commanders of the troops addressed the others on Monday morning. The source said, “There was an attack on soldiers along the Okene-Lokoja Road on Sunday night. Four of the soldiers were seriously wounded in the attack though all of them are still alive and are receiving treatment at Lokoja. “The soldiers were on their way for a course at Kontagora, where they are expected to be deployed in the North-East for the war against the insurgents. “The soldiers were pulled out from two military formations in Benin–the 322 Artillery Battalion and the Fourth Brigade Garrison in Ekeunwan, Benin. “It was not long that the soldiers returned from a peacekeeping operation in Sudan; they were members of the NIBBATT 41 that returned to the country about two months ago. “The soldiers were taken unawares as the attackers operated from both sides of the road and got four of the soldiers seriously wounded. “However, they returned the fire and passed through to Lokoja where they were addressed the following morning. I believe as I talk to you that they must have left for Kotangora to participate in the planned course.” The source said that there were feelings that somebody might have given out information on the movement of the troops from Benin to Kontagora. Efforts to get the comment of the Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, on the latest ambush were futile as the calls to his mobile telephone indicated that it was switched off. It will be recalled that about 190 Nigerian troops were ambushed by militants a few kilometres from Okene on January 19, 2013. The militants were said to have cut through the convoy of Mali-bound Nigerian Army peacekeepers travelling in three luxury buses via Kaduna to Bamako, Mali. They first hit the convoy with Improvised Explosive Devices planted on the highway before firing on the troops afterwards. Two soldiers were killed and several others injured during the attack. A few days after the incident, a group, Jama’atu Ansarul Muslimina Fi Biladis-Sudan, claimed that it carried out the attack. The group is a break- away faction of Boko Haram. Source: Punch news. |

ochukwuma15: After war comes reconstruction. But in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. why are you reconstructing north east when they are still throwing bombs left, right and center. Do you know when the bombs will stop ? Is Andrew Azazi right afterall. It is still a plan. I know fg only wants to show nigerians that it has the north east in mind if only locals in north east can withdraw the support they are giving the boko boys. |

But guess what, a newscater that actually showed the video claimed OBJ vehemently disagreed with the introduction of N5000 becuase it will kill production. Most Nigerians are simply incompetent...
