To be honest, about this whole where to school your kids thing...

I believe what it really boils down to, and i'm not aiming this just at ipopalomo but people with his philosophy, is that it is not a case of giving your kids superior morals or character. Canada has superior morals and builds greater Characters too. You do not have a Nation like Nigeria if it was the bedrock of Great Morals and Character.

Anyway, the real issue i see with people with this mentality is that they go to Canada and they see how black Canadians and second Generation act, behave, think and talk and they can not relate with it at all. It is Alien to who they are and what they grew up to be. This realization then strikes a fear in them that their kids too would grow up to be this way, their beliefs, accent, behavior, exposure etc would be totally different from what they had to experience.

It is this fear of not being able to see a lot of yourself in your own kids, basically your kids being full Canadian while you still consider yourself very much Nigerian with a Canadian passport, it is this fear that drives them to get their kids as much exposure as possible to the Nigerian reality so they can relate better with their Half Nigerian/Half Canadian kids and still see a bit of themselves in the kids. This is what i believe drives this mentality.

Nothing to do with Morals, or Character building, those are just rationalizations. You want your kids to be more like you so you can see some of yourself in them and be able to relate with them better. End.

To be honest, it's not wanting my kids to be like me...

The Canadian culture is very very ALOOF... Younger me wanted to be British... Damn the rest of world... Older me, I now understand culture better...

Everyone is saying they want Canadian kids... Yet... Get invited to a prayer meeting in this same Canada and see parents praying the Nigerian way and the children are looking completely lost...

This are things the environment teaches... It takes more than parents to raise a child... The environment also contributes...

My reason for leaving Nigeria is very different from every other person...

The same people saying let's leave our children here at some point will go back home... And now whether I like it or not... For better or worse... Nigeria is home

I also belonged in the school of thought... If I die here (Canada)... I'll just get buried here... It took me a long while... But Nigeria is home...

And the way I'll raise my kids is to be able to switch being Nigerian and International seamlessly without the culture shock...

Best schools is definitely not suffering...

It's not compulsory to suffer in order to become a good person. If that were the case, Nigeria would be full of good people but look at the state of the Country and you know that is not the case.

I don't know how you'll convince them that their Mom and Dad are over in Canada enjoying life in a developed country but want them to go through the trials and tribulations of living in a failed State just because that's what their parents went through. I hope your thinking evolves as time goes on.

I wouldn't want this for my offspring sending them back to were i escaped from. There are so many things and opportunities that happen in those formative years of teenage-hood that you would miss out on and that Nigeria would not help your kids develop. Could be sports or musical talents or IT programming. Even memories they'll create about High school. They would not be able to relate to other Canadian adults they would inevitably mingle with when they graduate and come back. It's just not right in my view.

Take them back on summer vacations for 3 months at a time, that's enough to appreciate the reality in Nigeria. But not sentencing them to 6 straight years. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Let's all of us stop tricking ourselves...

One... Nobody is suffering... If you've read my story... I don't blame my parents at all for anything...

But raising a child in Canada is very difficult...

1. This is a country where you don't stop working at least Mon - Fri... And in the early years... Children are sent off to daycare... So being in ones children's life is a complete fallacy... Except one of the parent don't work... And if you import your parent to come and babysit... It is completely not the same...

2. Everyone left Nigeria because of a reason, doesn't mean they hate Nigeria... And I said, moral values is what I want to instill... My children can't be completely Canadian and definitely cannot be completely Nigerian... I don't want my children to refer to Nigeria as Africa...

3. Trust me when I said Canadian teens don't have a clue what is going on out there... I had the best of both worlds at home... And I went to one of the best schools... But if you ask me how I'm able to get on here... All the tools I'll ever need... I learnt it back home...

4. Let's not pretend like there are no bad children in Canada... And let's not pretend there are no bad schools as well... I'm come from a close knit family... And to the best of my knowledge... My sisters kids are doing well... None of them will be suffering... This time, I'll be taking it up a notch, they're going to the best schools back in Nigeria... Under the Eagle eyes of my whole family and adugbo (trust me when I say adugbo is family sef)

5. I know the dagborus in Surulere and as much as I relate with them... They never let me stray... As my mom is considered mother... So which of them wants to initiate my children in cult... They didn't initiate the father, it's the son they want to initiate...?

6. It's coming here I understand Black Americans don't consider themselves Africans... Story for another day...

7. Best schools in Nigeria... Under the watchful eyes of everyone... Basically... Raising them the same way I was raised in a better condition...

My children will do alright...

They can always visit Canada during their summer.. But those formative years where they're easily impressionable... Na naija...

This is my take...

I don't even recall having a conversation with you. In all honesty, once I log off I don't know or remember anyone. The only person I remember is salf. Either way, you remembering me, especially this rant says a lot. But what I ask is a serious question. Do you really believe the hospitals, emergency response, safety, etc is on par with what they have in Canada ? If your child dies from a treatable medical emergency in naija, how would you feel ? I ask because I've seen this happen.

Do you see your kids dying...? as for me i dont...

And again keep stupidity to yourself. you'll be seem more wiser that way.

Aunty!
One month is just too early for you to understand certain things! Though my experience is different cuz I have lived here for 4 years as a university student I can literally identify with every single thing they're saying because I have seen people pass thru similar experience. Words like that are rare to come by so It's better you pay attention to them and pick lessons from it for you benefit. If heard those words 4years ago, I could have tried to do just one thing differently over these years.

How would you feel if your kids died of something, which could have been easily treated in Canada ?

Oga... calm down... you're awfully pessimistic... You always think of the worse possible situation which is definitely far from the case...

What could easily be treated in Canada that cannot easily be treated in Nigeria...? what is the bases of a life threatening disease in this conversation...?!! My idea for bringing my children to Nigeria is to instill a form of MORAL EDUCATION it'll be really hard to instill in Canada.

How does that bring room to cancer or Leukemia into the topic... Mr maternal, I do not know what is wrong with you but clearly, it is a lot...

I'll be sending my children to Lagos... I'm sure you know... sending them to the best schools or taking them to ST. Nicholas is the least of my problem... And as you already figured out... If it is the welfare check you're scared of sharing (the same money you were using to BUGA some weeks back to feed me) Keep your money... I advice you use that money to treat yourself... You need help. Big Help!!!

P.S;
If you want to come at me... Please do... I enjoy that... Don't bring my family in... You crossed the line with that post but right now i am in a happy place. It won't harm you to ignore me as much as I ignore you... I told you already... If nairaland had a block/hide button... we won't be having this exchange... until the forum applies the neccessary upgrades. Steer clear maternal... steer clear. peace grin

Lol I.T and finance have it the easiest here, though it is I.T that has the better remuneration of the two. For some other field, like engineering, it often isn't a plug and play scenario as the industry is very risk averse. There is a reason why international students land "core" engineering jobs much faster than experienced immigrant engineers. Then again it is best to have an open mind and chase your goals.

I don't have a family but have thought a bit about where would be best to raise my unborn(hopefully I am fertile cos we can't be too sure yet grin ). I am at a dilemna because I know I don't want them completely raised in Canada, but there is so much about Nigeria that leaves me sad and hopeless for the country. The mentality and culture that is evolving in Naija is one that I detest. Yet there are a lot of pros to growing in Naija that I feel it is necessary my kids live and build some roots there a bit and not merely visit. I watched Akon talk about how his Dad sent him and his siblings off to Senegal, while they only visited the U.S during hols, until they were done with secondary school. He makes it seem like he got the best of both worlds from it but I wouldn't want to assume everyone gets the same result from that experience. I wish I can learn of more cases like that, to help me draw an informed conclusion.

Another issue is in whose care and discipline would you entrust them? Would you relocate to Naija with them or would you just ship them out to boarding houses while you stay back in Canada?

City of Ottawa are looking for engineers and engineers in training something like that. It's something you should look into.

Primary school here in Canada...

Secondary school back in Nigeria...

University back in Canada...

And they'll be staying with my mom... Lol... Not traveling back with anybody...

I want them to understand that there's lights out and data cap and nights where you drink garri to bed.

The few Africans I've met born here in Canada don't really have a clue... I turned out okay and I really pray my kids turn out okay as well... That is what I can't teach but I can influence...

Your moniker is to die for, lol. I have had to completely quit drinking because I am still on G2. I never thought I could but it was between risking a DUI that could send me back to naija, vs Uber anytime man sips something. I can't afford taking an uber and still pay pricey car insurance, I have to maximize my money's worth lol.

Congrats on the new job, care to state what industry/profession it is? It would help someone in a similar field know what is applicable or perhaps reach out to you for tips.

Job Field: IT
Specification: Technical Support Specialist
Company: classified wink Evul laughter. grin

The job description is mostly what you need to get a job here... Your resume most match the Job description 110%. That gets one foot in the door... The rest is up to you.

Leave a really good impression and hope for the best.

Here nah Jungle... And I realised Canadians are very laxed... Nigeria finish work for my body as I'm of both worlds... My children will probably have their primary education here... Then secondary and technical school in Nigeria or something... Then come back here.

For B. Sc and whatever.

I been no wan talk before... But at this point... I need to share to some ghost reader that'll be needing this sometime in the future.

I'll be starting a new role on Monday... Dream job that comes with all the PERKS of a big company downtown OTTAWA.

It wasn't easy, I'll be honest but plenty observation and work got me in... and if you ask me... Most of them follow me come from Nigeria.

Unlike most people... I had no friends and/or family living in Canada. So that itself shows say nah Baba God follow me come.

But the biggest decision i took coming here was emptying my cup... I had to start from scratch... I got a job less than a month of landing that pays a little over minimum wage... It paid the bills, i am a good cook and I was comfy. but that no be wetin carry me come here as iyawo dey UK... I was always looking for that oppurtunity. Three months in my old role... I started Job hunting again... I got a juicy position with NCR and i got dropped for not having a G licensce... (I got my G - licence a month and a half later, re-applied to NCR, only if they call me tomorrow or something). I got another interview with survey monkey (Fortune 500 company), I did the networking, added people on linkedin, met people for coffee, did the due diligence, I know I did well... only to be told my SaaS skill wasn't Canadian enough.... That shii pained me... That shiii pained me entyer blood because i knew that was a stupid excuse to drop me after doing really well...

So I decided to cool job hunting till next year when a certain job I applied to back in June and already sent me the "We're moving on with other qualified candidates email" dusted my file on their shelf and asked me if i was still interested in the position two months after the fact.

See these people Oooo... Sure... Phone interview and assessment went smooth... It was billed for 15 minutes but we ended up talking for 45 minutes... This Hr woman (God bless her soul) is in Alberta. They have a branch in each city of every province in Canada and deep down I'm sure she was the one that push my application through. I digressed... grin ... Back to my story... I'm sure I aced my assessment as well and i was scheduled for the office interview... After every every... the managers were so impressed they told me we were two top candidates vying for a single position and asked me if i spoke french... I knew there was a problem... Ottawa is very bilingual as most jobs here are servicing French and English speaking people... besides it is the capital... Long story short... I got dropped again by the same company and i zeroed my mind till next year as I won't be hoping about for Interviews.

Last week of October... the HR called me and said... If i'm still interested, they'll like to commence background check... na so I approve and I got the job and i'll be resuming on Monday in a new role from Downtown not too far from where i live.

My point is, after my plenty story is that... There is absolutely nothing wrong in starting all over again... and doing your job wherever you find yourself in truth and satisfying your conscience. I had used my time at my small role to build for my future, I didn't get involve in office politics... i don't have a crew/clique... as I mingled with everyone, white, brown, Asians, Africans and aliens. Then my English wasn't very Nigerian. It's more British than Nigerian...

If you're religious... God has showered his grace upon me... and If you're not, I have been really lucky... Everyone story is different... Believe in your heart you'll reap what you sowed and all will be well.

Canada is cold... But it isn't that bad... i'm a game person... so if I see game... half of the world's problem is solved... that's where PS4 comes in handy... Iyawo wa... lol... and i see the disappointment on their faces when i mention I'm not available... It's a struggle to be casual as I really do... I go out sometimes... I buy a bottle of something strong at 42% at LCBO as Alomo is not available, I get invited to parties by everyone and relive moments and I uber home.

Everyone has a different perspective to Canadian life, My Landlord is 25/26 Indian guy, works with the government, has two houses and does UBER. I have a job just above minimum wage and i haven't found a reason to do UBER yet. My credit score is 708 and this is my Canadian story in 8 months...

You and you alone know the reason you made the move... do not let someone else's pity story discourage you... and trust me.. I've seen the homeless wandering downtown... it's not all fun and games but different strokes for different folks... a bad decision can render one homeless here... but that's story for another day.

general advice... Do not buy anything you cannot afford to pay off once... the only sort of financing i'll encourage anyone to have is a MORTGAGE. c'est fini...

I'm planning on learning french but that's next year program... right now omo olomo just wants to rest.

P.s:

Shout Out to my momsy... I was raised like a foreigner in Nigeria... perks of being an Ajebutter I guess. Peace!!!

Edited:

I really can't share too much... I wrote a short review of me living in Canada for 6 months on a popular forum and CBC wants to do a documentary as soon as I clock a year... How sweet can things get...? grin
