The Nigerian Army has denied knowledge of any plan to form an interim government in the country as being speculated in social media. The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Tuesday that the allegations in the social media that the Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen Kenneth Minimah, planned to take over government in the interim in the event of a victory by the opposition All Progressives Congress was untrue. Usman said the rumour against the Army, the Chief of Army Staff and other serving senior officers of the service was designed by mischief makers to cause disaffection within the service. The Army spokesman said those peddling the rumour were on a mission to distract the Army from focusing on its statutory responsibility of protecting the territorial integrity of the country and to reverse the recent victories of the Army against insurgents in several fronts of the North-East. He said the claim was a disservice to the Army in view of its contributions to the growth of democracy in the country. Usman also denied claims that two generals had resigned from the Army due to disagreement with the Chief of Army Staff, stressing that no such thing had happened in the service. The Army spokesman described as untrue another letter said to have been written by troops involved in the ongoing operation in the North-East, calling it a repetition of a failed attempt by some people to clone the identity card of a serving officer to write a petition to the President, raising allegations against the service. He said, “Any discerning mind would notice that these false and baseless allegations are calculated attempts by unpatriotic elements to divide the Nigerian Army, create disaffection among its ranks and distract the service from its avowed constitutional duty of defending the territorial integrity of our great nation. “The latest effort by these same group and their collaborators is the sensational and outrageous claim that the Chief of Army Staff is preparing to assume the leadership of this country through an interim government, in the event that the opposition party wins the 2015 general elections at the federal level. “This is dangerous, condemnable and a great disservice, given the tremendous sacrifices of the Nigerian Army in support of democracy in our nation. This deliberate attempt to erode public confidence and trust in the Nigerian Army will not be tolerated and the masterminds of these campaigns of calumny are advised to desist from their nefarious activities forthwith.” http://www.punchng.com/news/minimah-not-tipped-to-head-rumoured-interim-govt-army/ |

http://www.punchng.com/politics/agbaje-is-bode-george-ogunlewes-stooge-apc/ The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has urged the people of the state not to vote for the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, saying he is being controlled by the state’s PDP leader, Chief Bode George, and a former Minister of Works, Senator Adeseye Ogunlewe. The PDP had, last week, accused the APC governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, of being a puppet of former Governor Bola Tinubu. However, the APC in a statement titled, ‘Lagos will never become Bode George and Ogunlewe’s feeding bottle, the Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said if Agbaje was voted into office, he would hand over the resources of the state to George and Ogunlewe. Igbokwe said the PDP would rundown Lagos State just as it had run down the Federal Government. The APC said Agbaje was imposed on other PDP aspirants by George and Ogunlewe at the governorship primary as part of their plans to take control of the running of the state. The statement read, “It is a well known fact that Agbaje is a stooge and puppet to the duo of Olabode George and Adeseye Ogunlewe, two politicians that are best remembered for the despoliation that trailed their feel of political office in the ant-infested PDP governance of Nigeria in the past 16 years. “Even in its most desperate state, PDP in Lagos, Agbaje and his godfathers will never argue the well known fact that Lagos remains the most viable state in a Nigeria where the myth of oil is dying and states have to live on what they have invested in building an independent economy that will drive its survival. “In contrast, the Nigeria Jimi Agbaje and his PDP want to import to Lagos is one where hundreds of trillions of naira have been earned in 16 years yet there is no electricity, no jobs, all infrastructures are decayed, where corruption walks on all fours, where insecurity of lives and properties have become the order of the day “Lagosianswill never exchange competent, judicious and sure-footed governance that have given Lagos its enviable status as the last hope of a collapsing Nigerian economy for a puppet of two grudging godfathers. Lagos will never ever regress to become the feeding bottle for Olabode George.” Meanwhile, the Ambode Support Group led by a former Minister of State for Defence, has challenged Agbaje to publish the tax details in relation to his business premises or opt of the governorship race. According to the group, “Lagos State has been able to reduce dependence federal allocation becauseLagosianspay tax. It is embarrassing that a man who seeks to govern Lagos has been found wanting in this civic duty. To whom much is to be given, much should be expected.” |

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the service of the court documents on the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd), in a suit seeking to, among others, stop him from participating in the February 14 election. In the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/14/2015, filed by Max Ozoaka, the plaintiff raised eight questions for the court’s determination and prayed for among others, an order disqualifying Buhari from contesting or participating in the election. Justice Adeniyi Ademola while ruling on an ex-parte application, ordered a substituted service of the court documents on Buhari and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday after hearing the plaintiff’s application to that effect. The suit has Buhari and the INEC as defendants. The plaintiff said INEC ‘s Form CF 001 which the APC candidate submitted to the electoral body was incomplete because he allegedly failed to accompany it with all relevant academic credentials. He also disputed some information contained in other documents he possessed including Buhari’s voter’s card. The plaintiff wants the court to restrain INEC from permitting Buhari “to participate in the presidential election fixed for February 14, or any other date the 2nd defendant, INEC may fix.” He also urged the court to declare “that the said INEC Form CF 001 submitted by the 1st defendant to the 2nd defendant for the 2015 presidential election. As incompetent some being inchoate and not in conformity with the form prescribed under the Electoral Act.” The plaintiff equally urged the court to declare that information contained in INEC voter’s card attached to INEC Form CF 001 submitted to the commission by Buhari “is false on the ground that as at when the voter’s card was issued, the 1st defendant was not a public servant. Ozoaka, in a supporting affidavit to the originating summons, stated that the INEC Form submitted by Buhari did not meet the requirements under sections 31(1)(2) & (3), and 31( of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended). He further stated that the failure of Buhari to accompany the INEC Form with evidence of his educational qualification and evidence of his birth certificate or affidavit of declaration of age have combined to render the form inchoate. The plaintiff queried the authenticity of the statement of result or result sheet presented by Buhari on the ground that they bear ‘Mohamed’ Buhari as against ‘Mohammadu.’ Hearing in the case has been fixed for February 9. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/certificate-saga-court-orders-service-of-documents-on-buhari-inec/200861/ |

http://www.punchng.com/news/clo-scores-jonathan-high-on-human-rights-protection/ The pro-human rights group, the Civil Liberties Organisation, has said the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan deserves commendation for advancing the frontiers of fundamental human rights in the country. The group, which addressed the press in Lagos on Tuesday, said Jonathan should be lauded for his commitment towards the entrenchment of democratic ideals and values in the country. In a statement by its President, Igho Akeregha and Executive Director, Ibuchukwu Ezike, the CLO said, by creating a more democratic and freer political space, Jonathan’s administration had been able to stem the tide of politically-motivated assassination of opponents as was witnessed in the recent past. It also cited the signing into law of the Freedom of Information bill, the independence of the judiciary, observation of the 35 per cent affirmative action on women’s participation in governance and the recent National Conference as gestures which exemplified Jonathan’s commitment towards the respect for the sanctity of citizens’ fundamental human rights in the country. It said, “It is worthy to note that the state of basic and fundamental rights have generally improved under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. The CLO also observes that there is still a long way to go in consolidating the human rights situation in Nigeria but is encouraged by the resilience of the current administration in entrenching democratic ideals and values in governance. “In the area of political assassinations, the country has witnessed remarkable progress as there is hardly the occurence of the urgly incident. The cases of Harry Marshal, Bola Ige, Funsho Williams, Dipo Dina, Daramola in Ekiti, Dr. Ogbonnaya Uche in Imo and many others are sad reminders of the past.” Ezike added that the CLO was not an organisation that only critises but “when the government is making progress we notice it too.” The organisation, however, expressed concern over the spate of political violence in the build-up to the general elections in spite of the Peace Accord recently signed in Abuja. |

A coordinated bombing of three different courts has occurred in the politically charged South-South state of Rivers, the state police command has said. A high court was bombed in Port Harcourt, the state capital, while two others were similarly attacked in Degema and Isiokpo, police said. Details of the bombings as well as casualty figure are still however sketchy. News of the attacks on the courts came a week after suspected political thugs attacked members of the All Progressives Congress [APC], who were setting up equipment and canopies for a scheduled political rally. The location was later bombed. That attack on the APC came a week after a secretariat of the party at Ngo community in Andoni Local Government Area of the state was bombed. Five days before then, an APC office in Okrika Local Government Area of the state was attacked with dynamites. Okrika is the home of Nigeria’s First Lady Mrs Patience Jonathan. The spectre of political violence in the state began in early January when some supporters of the APC in Rivers State were shot on their way to attend their party’s presidential campaign flag-off in Port Harcourt. More to come… http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/176129-three-courts-bombed-rivers.html |
