The traditional heads of Ndigbo in Lagos, led by Eze Ohazulike, on Monday, endorsed the candidacy of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje, for the governorship race in the state. The endorsement was made known after a meeting of the traditional leaders at the Palace of Ohazulike. Addressing newsmen on their deliberations, Ohazulike said the group took the decision after studying the manifestos of the various political parties vying for the election in the state. “After exhaustively studying the manifesto and matters concerning our interests, we resolved that the interests of Ndigbo in Lagos would be better protected under a future Agbaje-led administration. “Accordingly, we endorse him as the candidate of Ndigbo in the coming governorship elections on behalf of our subjects and Igbo people in the state,” he said. Uwazulike also urged Igbo in Lagos to vote for Agbaje, saying he is the only candidate who has good plans for indigenes and non-indigenes in the state. He described Agbaje as a man of character and integrity whom he believed would deliver his campaign promises. He said so much has happened in the past 16 years in the state, which necessitates change. The traditional leader also urged the Igbo people to vote for President Goodluck Jonathan and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Some of the traditional leaders at the event included Eze John-Greg Ezebuadi, Eze Benjamin Eluii, Eze Ikem Agbasi, Eze Jonathan Ekwem and Eze Samuel Udol among others. http://dailyindependentnig.com/2015/02/igbo-lagos-endorse-agbaje/ |

The Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Services have denied that the Federal Government did not close the border posts in Sokoto and Kebbi states. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the officers in charge of Customs and Immigration at the Illela border post in Sokoto State made this known when they spoke with newsmen in Illela on Tuesday.NAN reports that the denial followed speculation that the Federal Government had ordered the closure of the borders in the two states for some undisclosed reasons.“The border post had not been closed and no such directive was given by the Federal Government.“Our officers and men are on duty diligently for 24 hours, non-stop,” Mr Agbetuye Peter, the officer in charge of Customs office at the post, said.Peter promised to continue to work round the clock to secure the nation’s border with the neghbouring Niger Republic. Also, Mr Toyin Saka of the Immigration Service corroborated Peter’s views, saying that the speculations were baseless and unfounded.“As you can see, our officers and men are on duty for 24-hours and we are running three shifts to effectively secure Nigeria’s borders,” Saka said.NAN observed that officials of Department of State Services, NAFDAC, NDLEA,Standard Organisation of Nigeria, Police, among others, were seen securing the borders. http://www.punchng.com/news/customs-immigration-deny-closure-of-borders/ |
Press statement from the PDP...The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described as revealing, the attempt by the All Progressives Congress to politicize the circulation of anti-election leaflets in Gombe statePDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statementon Tuesdayalerted that the rush with which the APC started raining accusations was “suspect and betrays a subterfuge; a spirited attempt to cover-up, divert attention and distract the security forces from getting to those behind the threats.”“Ordinarily, many Nigerians saw the statement by the APC as merely political, but looking beyond the veneer of politics undoubtedly is a bigger picture of an opposition party deeply involved but craftily deploying a smokescreen to divert attention through a hurried attempt to politicize a very serious security issue.“Whereas it is incontrovertible that Gombe remains a stronghold of the PDP with the soaring popularity of President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, we urge Nigerians to make their deduction as to which party standsto gain from any anti-election threat in the state. Is it the PDP for whom Gombe is a stronghold or the APC, which has been seeking to turn the state into a theater of violence owing to its dwindling popularity?“Furthermore, the manner with which the APC in its statement described the convoy of the insurgents and their said movements from Maiduguri to Gombe raises an issue. Is it that the APC has their members among the insurgents or is it part of its fabrication and lies to score cheap political point?“Nigerians are aware of series of attempts by the APC to cause mayhem in Gombe as a means to dislodge the PDP in the state. The December 18th 2014 ambush and attack on the convoy of Governor Dankwambo by APC thugs is still fresh in the mind.“We therefore demand a thorough investigation into the matter as it might assist in unraveling other knotty issues regarding the security challenges in the country.“This is especially as the APC has shown the capacity to find a voice and thrive whenever Nigerians come under attack or threat, as well as the proclivity for actions and utterances that tend to cause confusion, distract security agencies and embolden insurgents and their supporters”, the PDP said. The party therefore urged Nigerians to be wary of the APC, stating that its fabrications may not only be for propaganda but also for more sinister agenda.Noting that it will not be distracted but continue to focus on its campaign, the PDP restated its readiness for the March 28 and April 11, 2015 general elections adding that with its record of performance and support of Nigerians across board, it will receive a sweeping victory not only in Gombe but also in all the states of the federation.Signed:Olisa MetuhNational Publicity Secretary http://lindaikeji..in/2015/02/anti-election-leaflets-pdp-wants-apc.html#more |

Press statement from Ekiti state...The Ekiti Justice Group (EJG) has condemned the alleged diversion of N57.34m drugs meant for Ekiti State to the campaign of All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Major General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) by the wife of former governor of the State, Mrs Bisi Fayemi. The group, in a release issued in Ado Ekition Monday, and signed by its Secretary, Comrade Ebenezer Olaleye, urged the State government to investigate the allegation.A text message by EKITI-UK had alleged that Fayemi’s wife donated drugs worthN57.34m to Buhari's campaign. It was alleged that the drugs sourced from a European Donor Agency last year August for Ekiti Free Health Mission arrived first week of January. The drugs were said to be part of the N135m drugs Buhari's wife, Hajiya Aishatu Buhari donated to the Internally Displaced Persons camps in Adamawa State last week Wednesday.EJG said it was miffed that Fayemi and his wife were yet to learn there lessons after they were roundly rejected by Ekiti people. It added; "that was the way Fayemi’s wife built a N500m Centre for Gender and Social Policy Studies for the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife and donated two brand new buses to the Elizade University, Ilaramokin."She also donated 600 books from her library to the university while Ekiti State University was begging for attention."Her husband donated N1.5bn to Buhari's campaign and she has donated drugs meant for Ekiti people to Adamawa State."We wonder why Fayemi and his wife hate Ekiti and its people this much." http://lindaikeji..in/2015/02/group-condemns-fayemis-wife-alleged.html#more |

President Goodluck Jonathan on Saturday issued a rare public rebuke of his predecessor, Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of attempting to return to power through the backdoor by foisting an Interim National Government on Nigeria, in the hope he will be made head of the administration. Mr. Jonathan’s remarks followed comments by the former president on Saturday that President Jonathan was plotting to destabilise Nigeria as it becomes apparent he will lose upcoming elections. Speaking to journalists at his home in Abeokuta, Mr. Obasanjo said the president’s plan may be to stir chaos in the country as ex-leader of Ivory Coast, Laurent Gbagbo, did. Mr. Obasanjo, who spoke just days after endorsing ex-military ruler, Muhammadu Buhari, as his preferred presidential candidate ahead of Mr. Jonathan, said the incumbent may be driven by a grave fear of having Mr. Buhari as his successor. Mr. Jonathan rejected the claim that he was planning to create chaos or to hang on to power if voted out. A spokesperson for the president, Reuben Abati, said Mr. Obasanjo is instead guilty of his own accusation, as his repeated attacks on Mr. Jonathan are aimed at creating an atmosphere for an Interim Government, in the hope that Mr. Obasanjo would be asked to head to body. “Chief Obasanjo’s plot with others within and outside the country to thwart the general elections and foist an unconstitutional Interim National Government, which he hopes to head, on the nation is well known to us, but by the Grace of God Almighty, his odious plan to return to power through the back door will fail woefully,” Mr. Abati said in a statement. Read the full statement from President Jonathan’s office below: We find the false claims and allegations reportedly made against President Goodluck Jonathan by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abeokuta very odious and repugnant. As we have had cause to say before, it is most regrettable indeed that a man like Chief Obasanjo, who should know better, chooses to repeatedly, wantonly, and maliciously impugn the integrity of a sitting President of his country for the primary purpose of self-promotion. It is obvious from Chief Obasanjo’s serial vituperations against President Jonathan who is doing his best to positively transform Nigeria for the benefit of all of its people that he has wilfully chosen to close his eyes to the present administration’s good works and intentions. For reasons best known to him, Chief Obasanjo has set his mind on regime change by fair or foul means. Otherwise, it would be completely senseless, irrational and out of place for Chief Obasanjo, who still claims to belong to the same party as the President, to accuse President Jonathan of plotting to win the rescheduled presidential elections by “hook or crook” and planning to plunge the nation into crisis if he loses the election. For the record, President Jonathan has no such intention and will continue to give the greatest possible support to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other relevant federal agencies to ensure that the rescheduled elections are successfully conducted. Indeed, it is not President Jonathan who remains faithful to his oath of office who is trying to plunge Nigeria into crisis, but Chief Obasanjo who is scheming to plunge the country into chaos in pursuit of a selfish and highly egocentric agenda. Chief Obasanjo’s plot with others within and outside the country to thwart the general elections and foist an unconstitutional Interim National Government, which he hopes to head, on the nation is well known to us, but by the Grace of God Almighty, his odious plan to return to power through the back door will fail woefully. We know very well that it is in pursuit of this nefarious plot that the former President continues to sow the seeds of discord and crises in the polity by purporting to remain in the ruling party while openly consorting with the opposition, endorsing its candidates and predicting victory for opposition candidates in a manner most unbecoming of a supposed elder statesman. Thankfully, the vast majority of Nigerians who are patriotic and right-thinking cannot be fooled by Chief Obasanjo’s antics. We urge them to be assured that President Jonathan’s commitment to democracy in all its ramifications remains constant and that he will never be party to the use of any unlawful means to remain in office or gain political advantage over his opponents. The President stands by his commitment, which he reaffirmed on national television last Wednesday that on his watch, all elections in Nigeria, will be free, fair and credible, and that all certified election results will be respected. As President Jonathan has also assured the nation, the rescheduling of the general elections was in the best interest of the nation and was never driven by any ulterior motive on the part of government as Chief Obasanjo and others have alleged. President Jonathan will continue to put his best efforts into giving Nigeria quality leadership and will not be distracted from his purpose by unwarranted and needless criticism by persons who ought to know better. The President also continues to trust in the good judgment of Nigerians and to believe that in appreciation of his sincere efforts to move the country forward over the past four years, they will re-elect him for a second term on March 28, 2015 with a mandate to pursue his agenda for national transformation to a successful conclusion.
