Politics / Disturbing Picture Of A Typical African War by Isiolo(m): 3:28am On Aug 29, 2010
I found this picture floating on the web from the recent conflict in the horn. Its strange to know that most of the conflicts in africa are fought by kids. The picture is from my hometown back in somalia, now ruled by teenage islamic militants like these.

scenes like this dominate the conflict in the congo, sudan, somalia, formerly in liberia and sierra leone. Kids need not be shooting.

Politics / Re: Ask A Somali Anything, Naija Folks by Isiolo(m): 11:43am On Apr 10, 2010
I truthfully can't help some of this ignorance here, if you wanna call all 15 million Somalis in the Horn hybrids go on, and go ahead, call the 30 million Oromo hybrids as well and the 30 million Habesha hybrids as well, the entire Horn are all hybrids, go on tell us that lol.

And also tell those Berbers who are natives of Africa who share 90% DNA with Somalis that they're also hybrids because they don't resemble your image of "African looks", tell the Egyptians they're also hybrids, and tell the Khoisan of South Africa they're hybrids. Might as well tell the greater 50% of Africa they're all hybrids and foreigners to your strange image of your continent. BUT what if we said YOU are foreigners to OUR Africa? How would that strike you, INVADER? lol. Africa is the land of its owners whomever they may be from the Khoisan to the Tuareg and nothing but your ignorance changes that.
Politics / Re: Ask A Somali Anything, Naija Folks by Isiolo(m): 8:25am On Apr 10, 2010
True to my word I'll answer every question.

Igboboy, Somalis and Yemenis the same?  LOL what?  We have dark skin, they don't, we have NOTHING in common, but Ethiopians (Habesha) have some things to share with them.  grin

Illusion2, our language is called Somali lol.  Puntland is a northeastern region developed by war-weary Somalis (my clan actually, also pirate clan) and its part of Somalia, so is Somaliland which aspires to re-draw colonial lines and claim British-controlled Somaliland, hence their name.  I'm a 20 yr old virgin sadly, I don't know what they keep down there.

Babe97, our buck tooth thing is just a biological thing, must be because we used to wrestle lions or some shiii.

Mizztee, thanks for your understanding.  But however Ethiopians have a long history with Arabs.  They invaded Arabia and as well the Muslims sought refuge in Ethiopian lands early on, and one of the most important figures in Islam, Bilal, is an Ethiopian but not a Habesha which are the Ethiopian standard variety.

Ikengawo, you are right!  Arabs came from US not the other way around.  You'll find indigenous native activities practiced in Afar (cousins of Somalis) territories deep in Yemen, they are our children, not the other way around.  They even adopted OUR culture of camel-based society, and we have 90% of the world's camels in Somali territory in east Africa.

Doyin13, I think its because the Somali language naturally sounds native to those who speak it and oddly aggressive to outsiders, a lot of languages like most Asian languages also sound aggressive, so does Arabic and German.
Politics / Re: Ask A Somali Anything, Naija Folks by Isiolo(m): 7:50am On Apr 09, 2010
Thanks birdman, and I think jakumo has some good points.  My only point here is to say that we are ourselves, man its just ridiculous how ONLY our African brothers try to paint us as outsiders, like what the fuk man.

I am trying to say that beyond appearance and shiiit, we have our own way of life (nomadism) that no other culture but the related ones have (Oromo, Afar, Sidama, Beja).  If you bring Somalis into question, then take on Oromos who are half of Ethiopia's population, as well as the Afar, Sidama, and the Beja of Sudan, Egypt and Eritrea - put their lineage into question, by then you'll have 60 million Africans barking at you for calling them bastards!
Politics / Re: Ask A Somali Anything, Naija Folks by Isiolo(m): 7:44am On Apr 09, 2010
Jakumo, great post bro!  cool

I was only trying to address those who tried to downplay my peoples' background and history, that's all.  You're totally right in your whole post.

But I will allow the topic to continue on a cultural and historic basis, not a "racial" one as the filthy colonialists would put.
Politics / Re: Ask A Somali Anything, Naija Folks by Isiolo(m): 5:13am On Apr 09, 2010
I was busy the past week, so here is my late reply:

You guys should bring proof that we are mixed.  Honestly, bring proof.

Arabs and some Semitic and Mediterranean people originated from Somalis, its a fact.  They have OUR d.n.a. in their blood, not vice versa.  The only Arabs who came to Somalia settled the southern portions which were not even discovered yet by Somali nomads.  Its such fuking bull crap to say we are mixed, we have such a strong culture and traditions, we are not Arab.  We could pass for a true Arab easier than a Lebanese or Sudanese but we refuse it because our cultural traditions are too strong.  We are unique to our region (northeast Africa), there are Egyptian mummies and ancient Nubian figures that resemble the Somali look as far back as 2500 BC.

And plus, how can you account for the Somalis who live in the interior of Kenya and Ethiopia who probably never saw a foreigner cross their territory?  My clan stretches from the Red Sea to Central Ethiopia all the way to Kenya's eastern districts and we've settled there for longer than Islam has been around yet we all look the same, how do you get around that fact?
Politics / Ask A Somali Anything, Naija Folks by Isiolo(m): 8:50am On Mar 26, 2010
I thought I'd make this topic.  grin

I made it because on one topic a girl said "Somalis look a certain way because the Arabs mixed with them."

I'm thinking what the F---!!  So let me answer that real quick:

Somalis are they, themselves, period.  We are as old as time, after all the first humans came from Ethiopia where Somalis originated.  We are a unique genetic family just like the many ethnic groups of Nigeria.  We are not MIXED and we find it offensive to say we are mixed since we take great pride in our Somali heritage.  We are genetic freaks and very flexible in our DNA, let me tell you an example - My mom looks like a Moroccan, and of her siblings some look Ethiopian, some look Somali, some look Yemeni, and one looks Mulatto.  Funny thing is that they're 100% Somali, all of them, their father and their mother although the father (my grandfather) looked like an African-Arab hybrid but both sides of his family are notable and pure Somali clans.  You can find the whitest-looking Somali and I bet he's from the clan that rules Mogadishu lol.

Seriously, we are genetic freaks.  We are not "mixed" in any significant way, we simply have flexible and extreme genetic quality, period.  Why is it hard to accept that not all of Africa has the same general appearance.  We live in a huge continent and while we all share the same goal from our Egyptian brothers to South Africa, we aren't all the same looking.  Its a fact.  Lets embrace our differences while also embracing the things we have in common.

The FEW Arabs and Persians who ever traded in Somalia historically were part of designated communities that were singled out and isolated by mainstream Somalis just to demonstrate that Somalis don't take outsiders lightly.

Ask my Naija brothas & sistas what you will.
Islam for Muslims / Re: Sallam To The Next Muslim by Isiolo(m): 7:19am On Feb 27, 2010
This is one of the first topics I saw, I thought it could go on forever. So here I am!

My name is Mohamed and I'm a Somali from Kenya, I thank you for such a warm gesture that no Muslim can deny.

Wa'Salaamu'Alaykuum, brother.
Islam for Muslims / Re: My Westie Brothas! What's Life Like In Nigeria? by Isiolo(m): 6:27am On Feb 27, 2010
I'm an ethnic Somali who is a Kenyan national, sister. Somalis have lived in Kenya's borders for thousands of years, by the way. Our land there was given away to Kenya's ruling class by the British authorities in the 40s, I'm sure similar things have happened in most of Africa.

Are you Hatian by the way, the only Dominiques I've known are Hatian. grin
Islam for Muslims / My Westie Brothas! What's Life Like In Nigeria? by Isiolo(m): 1:25pm On Feb 24, 2010
As Salaamu Alaykuum.

Hehe.

Whatup, I'm a Somali brotha from Central Kenya, Isiolo to be exact as my name says, and in my time in the states I've only had contact with Muslim brothas from Naija, Senegal, Afghanistan and Liberia.  Pure class I must say.  I've pointed out in earlier topics that I had a desire to come out to Lagos as in my location.

I hope you bros are all good as Allah intends, will see you in prayer soon in Lagos or Abuja.

Just here praying good fortunes for ya'll, I wanna know what life is like in Nigeria.  You know, considering recent political events I was thinking of Ghana as the best locale at the moment in the region but I'm hoping you guys can shed some good light on Nigeria.

Much love to all my Muslim bros from Port Harcourt to Katsina.
Politics / Politics 101, Please Teach Me About Nigeria by Isiolo(m): 5:38am On Aug 01, 2009
Having spent time between the African states of Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia and having near-complete expertise over their politics as well as Djibouti, I wanna know more about Nigeria.

Naija is in my top 3 prospects for moving to Africa for further education, #1 is Khartoum and #2 is split between Cairo and Lagos. I reject Khartoum somewhat because its anti-Alcohol and I like to get tipsy now and then. grin

I had a Somali mentor who recently moved to Lagos though I haven't heard from him in a bit, I really wanna check it out, I saw pics and it looks amazing. I love coastal cities, reminds me of Mogadishu's Lido Beach before Aidid's glue-sniffing teenage militia destroyed it.

I can look on Wikipedia for days and I have, but nothing points me in the right direction. I checked out the Sectarian section too but that barely covers the surface of Nigeria's political scheme. Tell me what's going on.

One strange thing I noticed is that in 2007, Muslim candidates ate up 96% of the total votes. Something smells of corruption and extreme religious/cultural sectarianism much like Sudan but to a much lesser extent.

Anything helps, I'm a former Political Science student and I still crave for it. undecided

I gotta say, looking around this forum, I see chest-pumping and bravado, its disgusting and beautiful at the same time.

Some might say arrogant, but I like Nigerian sense of pride, whether tribal or nationalistic or religious patriotism, its what makes people who they are. grin

I surf some of the other forums like Ethiopian and Sudanese ones, I never came across self-hating people like that in my whole life.  Especially those South Sudanese, always crying about something whether Arab-wannabes or past history, no sort of manhood left in them.  Then Ethiopians all want to be Jamaican for some reason, I thought it was setup the other way around, rasta fara and shiii.

Naija. cool

lol @ the tribal section, this is the only forum besides my Somali forums that glorifies tribalism, just don't take it too far and end up like us. wink

This thread has really degenerated into something completely different. Aren't there rules against off-topic posting?

And when the hell did Somalis carry out attacks in Nigeria? The point of this topic is to find Somalis in Nigeria and now Somalis are fighting wars there? I think you lost me in this topic.
Culture / Re: Somalis In Nigeria by Isiolo(m): 7:02pm On Jun 25, 2008
I think Londoner was being sarcatic. grin

Hero & Londoner, if you look at the map I posted, you will see that Somalia & Ethiopia are the only two nations in Africa whose only official language is an indigenous one. In every other Sub-Saharan country, there is a second language that is also official. Also, there are probably the least number of Whites to be found in those countries as well. If you visit the capital of any major African city, you will see Whites and Indians every 15 meters - I have yet to witness that in the aforementioned countries. Maybe civil war is what keeps them at bay -- a bullet a day keeps the Whitey away. cool

But that's not the topic. The topic is about the Somali community in Nigeria. My only knowledge is that Liberia has more Somali residents than Nigeria. I LOL'd when I first heard that.
Culture / Re: Somalis In Nigeria by Isiolo(m): 9:07am On Jun 25, 2008
Hero:

Hello, I'm a Black-American guy and would like to ask you if it's true that most Somalians and Ethiopians do not consider themselves to be blacks? I've heard this mentioned alot, is it true?

Somalis and Ethiopians in general see themselves as being Black people, but different from other Sub-Saharan Africans. You have to understand, there is a massive barrier between Somalis/Ethiopians and other Sub-Saharan Africans in terms of geography. We are as distant in terms of geography and culture as the Arabs and Berbers are to Sub-Saharan Africans. But obviously, Somalis/Ethiopians consider themselves Black, but the definition of that word gets watered down according to the individual whom you are speaking to. I know I am a Black-African and I am very proud to have membership in that group.

And no matter what the critics say, Somalia & Ethiopia are the only pure Black nations in Africa. Free of European/Arab genetic or cultural pollution. grin

Hello. This is an old topic, but I was surfing this forum and I found this to be interesting. I don't know if you still post here, but you'll find this shall you need it.

I am a fellow Somali so I could help in this department. I don't know the number of Somalis in Nigeria, but I know quite a few who recently went to Lagos. They are there for business and it is a good place to be.

I lived in Kenya for quite some time, and you most likely did as well - or South Africa, and neither place is friendly to foreign business competition which is a bit f-cked up. In Nigeria, you will find that vastly different. They don't care who you are, if you have business to offer they will accept it. If I get to do study abroad, that will be my first African destination.

Here I come, Lagos 2009. grin
