I see it as if the girl is being sold to the family of the groom, the reason why the girl carry the family name of her husband or the name of her husband, and the more reason why the man has control over the woman, the more reason why d woman is expected to respect and worship her husband. i think some old traditions should be relaxed or modify a little bit. many men treat their wives badly cos they feel they have paid her dowry and presumed they have ultimate control over them.

When family of a bride collect bride price or dowry from the family of the groom, i see it as if they are selling their child to d groom's family, and the girl will later bear the groom's family name. some cultures dont collect dowry or charge bride price cos they see it as if they are selling their daughter to the other party(groom). pls i will like nairalander opinion on this issue- is bride price or dowry important in consummating a marriage contract? why do some families demand heavy dowry and bride place? should bride price be abolished? Thanks.
