Three students of Maryam Abacha American University of Niger, Maradi, lost their lives in a fatal motor accident in Gusau the capital city of Zamfara state on Friday August 2nd.

The students identified as Muhammed Lawal Damau age 20, Muneer Musa Lawal Dare, 22, and Abdurrahman Babayo, 21, wrote their final year exams on Thursday August 1st and were on their way home when they died in the fatal accident.

In a condolence letter sent to the families of the late students which was signed by the President of the University, Professor Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, the University expressed the school community's sadness and compassion over the unexpected loss of the students.

The statement described their deaths as a great loss not only to their families, but to the University community and the entire Nigerian society. Gwarzo prayed for their souls to live in perfect peace, and asked God to give their families the fortitude and courage to bear the irreparable loss.

During sentencing, judge Amanda Yip told Porton her actions were ‘evil’ and ‘calculated’.

She said: ‘These were blameless young children who were plainly vulnerable and ought to have been able to rely on their mother to protect and nurture them. Instead you took their young lives away.’

Judge Yip added that the pressures of life as a single mum could ‘not begin to explain’ what Porton did.

She continued: ‘One way or another you squeezed the life out of each of your daughters, only calling the emergency services when you knew they were dead.

‘I am sure at the time of the deaths, you intended to kill each of your daughters. Why you did so, only you will know.

‘Those who loved Lexi and Scarlett have been left bewildered as to how and why you could have done something so evil.’

In a victim impact statement read to court by the prosecution, the girls’ father, Chris Draper said: “Why did Louise do something so evil to our beautiful daughters?

“You are their mother, the person supposed to care for them, protect and love them. They were just an inconvenience to you; how could you do this?”

Mr Draper said no punishment would ever be enough as nothing will bring his daughters back.

“I sit and think, day and night, and I can’t understand why my two little girls were taken away because Louise wanted to sleep around.

“Maybe if social services had listened to me, my girls would still be alive today.”

Mr Draper, who was in court for sentencing, said: “I hate Louise.”

CCTV footage showed Porton casually leading Lexi into their home hours before she killed her on Jan 15 last year.

While Lexi was receiving treatment, Porton took topless photos in the hospital bathrooms and was arranging to perform sex acts for money with a man she had met through a website.

Before calling 999, she searched “can you actually die if you have a blocked nose and cover your mouth with tape” on the internet. She waited “some time” before contacting emergency services the court heard.

Jurors were told that the mother-of-two did not seem distressed by Lexi’s death and accepted 41 friend requests on the dating app Badoo a day later.

Porton killed her second daughter Scarlett less than three weeks later on Feb 1 and told a 111 call handler that her condition “did not seem urgent”.

She was convicted of two counts of murder on Thursday following a five-week trial at Birmingham Crown Court.

Porton, described as “calm and emotionless”, denied all responsibility, telling police in a prepared statement: “I still don’t know how my daughters died, or what caused it.

Ugandan lecturer jailed for 18 months over poem about President Museveni's mother's vagina

Prominent Ugandan academic, Stella Nyanzi was on Friday August 2 handed an 18 months jail sentence over a poem in which she used President Yoweri Museveni's mother’s vagina to criticise his “oppression, suppression and repression” in the country.

Stella who once called Museveni “a pair of buttocks”, was found guilty of cyber harassment over the Facebook post which went viral.

The academic sat for her sentencing via a video link from a maximum security prison by the shores of Lake Victoria in Kampala. Reuters reported that she shouted vulgarities, flashed her breasts and gave a double middle finger on several occasions during the court session.

“My presence in your Court as a suspect and prisoner highlights multiple facets of dictatorship. I exposed the entrenchment of autocracy,” she wrote in her most recent post, a poem about her court case.

“I refuse to be a mere spectator in the struggle to oust the worst dictator.”

The sentencing ignited the outrage of rights activists who accused the government of using laws about electronic communications to stifle political dissent.

More than 380 Chinese nationals were detained during a raid on a gambling ring in Vietnam, state media reported Sunday, in what Police claim is the biggest-ever betting operation run by foreigners.

According to the report, Police also confiscated nearly 2,000 smartphones, 530 computers, bank cards and cash.

Most forms of gambling are illegal for locals in Vietnam, but the country has, in recent years, been used as a venue for online betting rings run by gangs from China and Taiwan.

Some 500 Police officers in the northern port city of Hai Phong broke up the Chinese-run network in a raid late Saturday on a gated community called Our City, where rooms were used to transact online bets worth more than $400m, state-run Vietnam Television said.

“This case is considered the biggest ever in terms of scale and the number of foreigners breaking laws on Vietnam’s soil,” VTV reported.

The 380 Chinese nationals fielded online wagers from Chinese punters on sports betting and ran an illegal lottery, it added.

Police declined to provide additional details when asked for comment by AFP.

Vietnam’s one-party state has started loosening its rules on domestic gambling, allowing its citizens to bet in casinos on a trial basis and opening up some sports betting.

But lucrative illegal operations have mushroomed, prompting a crackdown on domestic gambling rings.

Dozens of people were convicted in Vietnam last year in connection with an online gambling ring run by a senior official in charge of policing internet betting.

A 20-year-old security guard, Micheal Nwaogwu, who allegedly stole N2,385 from an offering box, on Friday appeared in a Yaba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The police charged Nwaogwu, who resides in Costain area in Lagos, with theft.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The Prosecution Counsel, Sgt. Godwin Oriabure, told the court that the defendant committed the offence at midnight on July 17, at St. Dennis Catholic Church, Akoka Bariga, Lagos.



Oriabure alleged that another security guard, Mr Musa Ayay, discovered that the offering box was tempered with.

He said when Ayay confronted the defendant, he confessed to the crime.

Ayay alleged that the money was recovered from the defendant’s underwear.

The offence, he said, contravened the provisions of Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that if convicted under Section 287, a person is liable to three years imprisonment,

Magistrate Oluwatoyin Ojuromi admitted the defendant to ail in the sum of N30,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Ojuromi ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation.

She adjourned the case until Aug. 19 for mention.
