Nice job. Very beautiful and encouraging. Any special soil for the water melon and which location are you? I observe that water melon do not do well in Port Harcourt area and South South. Any successful farmer?. What did you od to get it right with your water melon?

Im so impressed with your Pumpkin posts. A great relief. Seed multiplication in these harrowing times is no mean feat. Please share it formally or open a new thread on it. Its worth learning for folks like me.
Issues like the time it takes to multiply times 4. The conditions and challenges experienced. Special feeding or nurturing for the plants under this condition.

Politics / Re: Misau: IG Of Police N10Billion Monthly Bribe Allegation Debated On Channels TV by Itydee(m): 6:08pm On Aug 29, 2017
Who is giving hate speech here? The senator or the small fry of a PRO for the Police who speaks as if he is a personal houseboy of the IGP and not representing the Entire Police Force of Nigeria?
Its a big shame that the Police Administration suddenly realized the guy is a deserter just because he is prying the lid off a can of worms.
Thank God he is a Senator. he should watch it before he becomes a victim of stray bullet or unknown assassins.
Poor man he doesn't seem to have a very good grasp of English and is not cunning. But after serving as ADC to the high and mighty and working for Shell et al he seems well connected and very grounded. No wonder he has the temerity to say the Police Force is confused.
Chai this man has the guts but lacks the swag.
We need more men like this. This is original whistle blowing.

Very shameful and disheartening that Eket is so painfully cheated by governments after the state creation.
God will return the gift of Pharaohs to those cheating Eket.
Their children will beg the childre of slaves for crumbs.

Nice response. I was of the same opinion. I have a young friend who is planting now. though he has suffered severe seed loses. I believe there is too much rain to plant Cucumber and tomatoes this August
1kinggy:

Wait till September if you're growing them for sale. PH and southsouth still has plenty rain. Veggies are more profitable in dry season, then the "easy farmer" would be out.

Like me, I plat only dry season corn, why? Everyone does it when it is raining and there's surplus.
Agriculture / Re: Planting Tomato - My Experience(photos) by Itydee(m): 10:52pm On Jul 27, 2017
Thanks I appreciate.
Are you a tomatoes farmer? if so can you drop your number or email so we can discuss progress as the future unravels?
ilubarde:
10 acres roughly equals 4 hectares. That is a huge land for vegetables production and not just tomatoes. Just ensure that the land is well drained and not water-logged. Bush burning or caterpillar clearing? Either has its benefits and challenges. Local peculiarities preclude evaluation of cost. But, caterpillar clearing compacts the land while bush burning burns the top soil nutrients. In the end, it is your choice as you can always amend the soil to give you your desired nutrient levels
Agriculture / Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by Itydee(m): 10:28pm On Jul 27, 2017
Thanks a zillion.
Can I start planting Cucumber and Tomatoes now?
People that planted Ugu in my area are crying because of glut. Lots of Ugu leaves everywhere and no patronage from buyers. This is around Etche in Rivers State
jidestroud:

Thanks for the positive feedback, really appreciated. Okay, back to business.
Firstly, 40 plots isn't something to play around with biko. I have come to the realization that Agriculture is Real BUSINESS, and it requires 100% attention if you are to make a living from it.

Secondly, both cucumbers and tomatoes are good to go but you need to all the factors for optimum growth and bountiful harvest in place. e.g.

1. Your Terrains (Land type, soil type, season etc) before you even start. This enables you to make necessary provisions for deficiencies and supplemental additions if need be.

2. No what type of cucumber/tomato specie thrives best. (Well, for this rainy season, you would've have to go extra yard if you want to go into tomato farming as of now, believe me, the odds ain't too good for now)

3. Most people actually don't discuss the other part of Farming, i.e. Where you could actually fail big time. Not even in this time when diseases and pests are a major concern in crop farming. you would to prepare for it. Like someone told me, Don't ever try resurrecting an infested/infected plant, just destroy and start over again...meaning "prevention is better than cure in farming. Lol

4. On the issue on viability of your seeds, well, there are couple of ways I try checking out if a seed is till viable; like suspending in water, wrapping the seeds in damp tissue paper and putting it in my fridge to see if it develops roots in a couple of days...etc.

5. Why not try out ugu (fluted pumpkin) farming. You could lay your hands on some ph seeds (which is also in high demand in lagos here) or go for the all time sort after calabar seeds. Both will do very well in this season with less stress. The rains will do just fine.

6. I know nothing on ginger farming.

Hope I helped a little. Lol.

NOTE: I'm not an expert/professional in Agricultural crop farming . Please, before you go ahead and start up, do consult with professional in the field.

Thanks.

How did you handle the weed? I notice you did not use black cellophane to cover your ridges.
Can one start planting in Port Harcourt In August?. Any one in the house to the rescue?
Agriculture / Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by Itydee(m): 10:44am On Jul 23, 2017
I'm so impressed with your openness and sincerity. I want start planting cucumber and tomatoes next week. I'm Port Harcourt based. Is this the right time of the year to start? Its raining cat and dog for the past 2 days here.. I want to do it large scale too. I have some cabbage seeds given to me by my Philipino friend last year . Is it still viable? I Also plan to plant ginger too in my farm. Is this the right season to start. I have about 40 plots PH measurement to play with.
Ideas please.....!!!!!?
