Popular comedian, Ayobami Ajewole, a.k.a Woli Agba, has just confessed that he had a real scare the first time he flew in an aeroplane. That was some years ago, when the Alfa Sule Dance Troupe gave him an opportunity to travel by air from Lagos to Abuja for the first time in his life. Before then, he claimed in an interview with our correspondent, that it never occurred to him that he could enjoy the luxury of air travel. He said, “It was really the first opportunity I had to travel out of the country. We went to South Africa. It was also the first time I would enter a plane. In fact, I didn’t even know that one could travel by air from Lagos to Abuja. “When the plane took off, I was smiling inside me. Suddenly, the pilot announced that the plane was in a sort of trouble. It was not funny. There and then, I told God that He didn’t bring me on the journey to waste my life. I thought I was going to die. Fortunately, nothing happened. The plane didn’t crash. I was so happy and relieved when we eventually arrived in South Africa.” Woli Agba admitted that at a point in his career, he felt that he had been forgotten as an entertainer and there was nothing for him to fall back on. “People stopped talking about us at a point and I didn’t have anything to fall back on. I felt as if I had used up all my glory and there was nothing left for me. I was preparing to get married at the time. But from nowhere, things started working out for me again,” he said. On his relationship with female fans, the humour merchant claimed that he had never received sexual advances from his female fans. “Ladies respect me whenever they see me. They call me Woli Agba and daddy. Even when I attended Olamide’s concert, they came to me and started calling me daddy. Ladies don’t see me as a young guy they can relate to or entice. I get direct messages on social media from ladies, but I value my marriage and my home comes first. I am too focused to be distracted.” Gist via:: https://amebo9ja.com/my-first-time-in-aeroplane-i-thought-id-die-woli-agba/ Cc: Lalasticlala, Mynd44, Dominique

I regret joining APC, says Atiku Abubakar Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has apologised for joining the groups, who came together to form the All Progressives Congress. He said the apology had become necessary because of the sufferings Nigerians had been subjected to in the last three and half years from a party he played a role in bringing to power. Atiku, who spoke on Thursday in Yola, Adamawa State, during a town hall meeting with residents of Jimeta, described the APC as an assembly of ‘elements’ that came together to defraud the country. He said the party had failed in changing the fortunes of Nigerians for good. He said, “I regretted being a part of the party which never deemed it fit to fulfil all of the promises it made to Nigerians. “If I had known that the APC would be such a colossal failure and disgrace, I would never had joined the party. “The APC has failed to fulfill even one of the promises it made to Nigerians. The APC is simply an assembly meant to defraud Nigerians.” Speaking further, the former Vice-President said that the country would not survive another four years if the APC was returned to power in 2019. EFCC seals houses linked to Fayose in Ekiti The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Thursday sealed off some properties allegedly belonging to the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. The sealed properties were marked with red ink and had written on them: “EFCC under investigation KEEP OFF ABJ-HQ FAFI.” The buildings include a block of two-storey commercial complex located opposite the Ekiti State Local Government Service Commission; the NTS Event Hall and Hotel, Fajuyi; Our Peoples 104.1FM, Fajuyi; and a building beside Spotless Hotel, GRA, Ado Ekiti. Others are a twin-building behind the Government House at the GRA; a two-storey commercial building at the Okesa Market; and a petrol filling station, whose land the Muslim community had on Sunday alleged was taken away from them. The sealed buildings marked by the EFCC were not less than 12. The trial of Fayose for alleged theft and money laundering began at a Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday. The EFCC alleged that the former governor benefited to the tune of N2.99bn from the arms fund allotted to the office of the former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd). The former governor was accused of collecting the amount to finance his re-election as governor in 2014. The Station Manager of Our Peoples 104.1FM, Layi Oyawa, who noted that the station was not sealed but placed under investigation, said the organisation was being run by Ejemu Nigeria Limited. “You can see, we are on air. The EFCC came here this morning that this place was under investigation. They are free to investigate,” he stated. But Fayose accused the EFCC of going about sealing houses belonging to innocent people in the state under the guise that they were linked to him. The former governor, in a statement by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, stated that he was informing the public ahead of the EFCC’s usual blackmail and media trial. The statement read in part, “Just being informed that operatives of the EFCC, in collaboration with the All Progressives Congress government in Ekiti State, are going about sealing houses of innocent people in the state under the guise that the houses are linked to me. “This is another wild goose chase and the usual media campaign against my person. It is only in our country that an anti-corruption agency will first go about sealing houses before determining the ownership, which can be done so easily by visiting relevant agencies. “I am therefore informing the public ahead of their usual blackmail and media trial. None of the properties in question is owned by me and the records are there for anyone that is interested to see. “The EFCC is advised to stop going about looking for ways to malign my person just because of their hatred as a result of my uncompromising stand on national issues. Even if the commission is being pressured from ‘above’ to persecute Fayose at all cost, it should at least, do its job diligently to save itself from persistent embarrassment.” See more: https://amebo9ja.com/efcc-seals-houses-linked-to-fayose-in-ekiti/

Presidency attacks Jonathan over claims in book Barely 24 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari showered praise on his predecessor, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, for handing over power to him peacefully in 2015, the Presidency on Thursday attacked Jonathan over his position that corruption is more rampant in Nigeria than the period preceding 2015. Jonathan on Wednesday, launched his book, ‘My Transition Hours’, in which the former President wrote on how he lost the 2015 election and why he chose to relinquish power peacefully. On Thursday, the Presidency said Buhari took exceptions to Jonathan’s position that there was more corruption in the country than during his tenure. The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr Garba Shehu, in a statement, described Jonathan’s position as “hollow boasts”, adding that the former President merely played “the ostrich” instead of admitting that he lacked the political will to fight corruption or implement policies to halt stealing of public funds. The Presidency in the statement claimed that top government and party officials were being prosecuted and brought to book for the first time because of Buhari’s intention to check corruption in the country. It also claimed that former military commanders had been brought to book, in addition to the trial and conviction of former governors. It stated, “For the records, this is the first time a ruling party is investigating ranking officers of the administration, including some at the very top. “In addition to the many firsts recorded by President Buhari’s administration, the government has introduced a lot of changes, considering that the laws relating to the fight against corruption cannot reasonably be static.” It added that Buhari initiated new laws and proposed amendments to existing ones to strengthen the war against corruption. Shehu listed the laws as the Money Laundering Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2017; Anti-Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Bill 2017; Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit Bill 2017; Proceeds of Crime Bill 2017; Public Interest Disclosure and Witness Protection Bill, 2017; and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill, 2017. On Jonathan’s assertion that his administration introduced the policies the Buhari administration has been using to fight corruption, the Presidency disagreed. Shehu said, “Nigerians should dismiss Dr Jonathan’s hollow boast that he, not President Buhari, introduced schemes such the Biometric Verification Number, the Treasury Single Account and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System. Of what use is the announcement of good policies without the will to implement them? “Since President Buhari assumed office, Nigerians are witnesses to the huge success recorded through the implementation of the TSA, where some government agencies that had over the years remitted peanut amounts or nothing at all are now periodically pumping billions into government coffers.” “Prominent among these remittances include the ones made by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, the Nigerian Ports Authority, the Federal Inland Revenue Service, the Nigeria Customs Service and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.” Although the Presidency admitted that Jonathan introduced the BVN policy in 2014, it noted that “the lack of will and capacity under Dr Jonathan stalled implementation.” Furthermore, the Presidency stated that Buhari introduced the whistle-blower policy to cut fraud and financial misconduct. “Within six months of introducing this policy, over 5,000 reports were made through various channels, 365 actionable tips were received out of the 5,000 reports. So far more than N200bn has been recovery,” it added. On the recovery made by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Presidency said as of 2015, there was only N19.5bn in the recovery account. “After one year of the new anti-corruption drive by the Buhari administration, this figure had gone up to N279 bn, and since then a lot more has been recovered”, it stated. The Presidency further noted that Jonathan’s book really didn’t have anything to say about his achievements or those of the Peoples Democratic Party’s 16 years in office, hence the resort to making excuses. The Presidency said, “As evidenced from a fleeting look at the book, the former President had nothing to say about his own achievements. If there was a recession, and yes we had a moment in it, was it due to one year of President Buhari’s government? “In his efforts to blame everyone but himself for his failures, Dr Jonathan heaped the blame for the predictable economic recession on President Buhari, ignoring the seeds sown under him through mismanagement and the process set in firm roots for the decline of the economy. Evidently, he did nothing to avert the situation.” PUNCH Read More: https://amebo9ja.com/presidency-attacks-jonathan-over-claims-in-book/

I laugh when people call me clueless – Jonathan Former President Goodluck Jonathan says he laughs anytime people try to run down his administration as a clueless one. The former President said this in his recently published book titled, ‘My Transition Hours’. He said, “Sometimes I laugh when certain propagandists attempt to stand logic on its head by maligning my administration as one bereft of ideas and clueless. In assessing my administration, it is best to focus on facts. “I cannot assess myself. I leave that to history and I make bold to say that never in the history of Nigeria till date has the nation had such a star-studded cabinet full of achievers and people who got to the top of their chosen fields by merit.” Jonathan said the only thing that saddened him was the hounding of his former ministers by the Muhammadu Buhari administration. He, however, said he was happy that many of his ministers and former appointees had become leading world figures today like Adewunmi Adesina and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Jonathan added, “Most painful has been the attacks on my ministers, aides, associates and even members of my family. There is an attempt to erase our legacy from history. The good thing is that the unending barrage of attacks, deliberate misinformation, and programmed media smear campaigns have failed to sway the opinions of those with the clear view of our beliefs, efforts, and achievements. “There are millions of Nigerians and others around the world who are still impressed with our modest achievements in consolidating democracy and growing the nation’s economy. They will continue to serve as my strength and encouragement.” Culled: Punch Read more: https://amebo9ja.com/i-laugh-when-people-call-me-clueless-jonathan/ Cc; Mynd44

Family blames Ikeja Electric as wire electrocutes Lagos churchgoer The family of Veronica Oboh has been thrown into mourning after she got electrocuted by a high tension wire that fell off a power pole in the Ijaiye area of Agege Local Government, Lagos State. The family and eyewitnesses blamed Ikeja Electric, an electricity distribution company, for Oboh’s death, noting that the tragedy would have been averted if the firm’s officials had quickly attended to the fallen wire. PUNCH Metro gathered that the deceased was on her way to attend a church service before she stepped on the exposed wire, which instantly electrocuted her. An eyewitness, Femi Afolabi, who said the wire fell the day before the incident, stated that he was on his way into the Ijaiye Housing Estate when he observed that people were gathered at the junction and lamenting the fate of the deceased. The 48-year-old Lagos State indigene said, “When the wire fell off the pole around 9pm, people who usually sell around there ran for safety. I was on my way into the estate around 5:30pm the next day when I saw that people were gathered at the junction of the estate. “When I moved closer to see what had happened, I saw that a woman, who had been electrocuted by the wire that fell, was lying on the floor; she reportedly stepped on the wire because she could not see properly as there was a power outage. I saw a torchlight beside her body but I wasn’t too sure of her identity. “So, when officers from the Pen Cinema Police Station took away her remains, I had to visit the station to confirm and it was through an identification card that I knew that Oboh was the person that was electrocuted. I was the one who gave the police her elder brother’s number; but the most painful aspect was that despite the fact that Ikeja Electric was aware of the incident, it was on the third day that its officials came to fix the fallen wire.” The brother of the deceased, who asked not to be named, blamed IE for Oboh’s death, adding that if the company had fixed the fallen wire when it was alerted to it, the deceased would not have stepped on it. He stated, “This incident was due to IE’s negligence and irresponsibility. It is bad that when they were alerted to the fact that a high tension wire had fallen, nothing was done for nine hours until it killed Oboh. Even when I went back to the scene of the incident around 12:30pm to take photos, nothing had been done. IE can’t say they don’t know that the high tension wire fell. “This kind of incident will always reoccur except it is reported and escalated so that the officials on duty can be properly sanctioned. She got electrocuted on her way to attend the Winners’ Covenant Hours of Worship around 5:30am. So, when the Divisional Police Officer of the police station called me to identify the body, I was told that the wire had fallen around 9pm the night before the incident and that all attempts to reach Ikeja Electric to solve the situation failed.” The elder sister to the deceased, Regina Egege, said her late sister’s pastor, who had commiserated with the family, had also delegated members of the church to sympathise with the family over the loss. “When my aunt and cousin came back from the hospital, I was told to come outside because they wanted to see me. When I got outside, one of them said: ‘It is well, something has happened’, I immediately asked what happened and I was told that my sister, Oboh, was dead. I jumped up, but the two of them held me and consoled me. The pastor of her church spoke to me on the phone and also delegated three of his members to sympathise with the family,” Egege added. A trader, Kudirat Lawal, who sells goods close to the scene of the incident, told PUNCH Metro that people thought she was the one who died, adding that the high tension wire that killed Veronica had been sparking on the pole for about six months. “When people heard that it was a woman who died, they thought I was the one, because where I do trade is located in the area where the wire killed the woman. This wire had been sparking on the pole for about six months; whenever it sparked, people would run away. The IE was aware of it but they refused to fix it until it fell and killed someone,” Lawal said. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said Oboh’s death was sudden and unnatural as she got electrocuted. “It was a case of sudden and unnatural death by electrocution. The woman was on her way to attend a church service around 5:30am but did not see the wire on the floor. She stepped on the wire, got electrocuted and died on the spot. The police took the corpse and deposited it in the mortuary,” Oti stated. The Head of Corporate Communications, Ikeja Electric, Felix Ofulue, commiserated with the deceased’s family, adding that investigation into the incident was ongoing. “We are aware of the incident. We commiserate with the family of the deceased and we are currently investigating to find out the cause,” Ofulue said. Will Atiku Abubakar Be A Good Leader If Elected President As the election is getting closer, all things are gradually getting sets between all Presidential Aspirants for all the political parties. But the big contender now is between the incumbent president Muhammad Buhari who is running for 2019 and ex Nigerian vice president Atiku Abubakar whose name #Aticulated all over social media. But the question still remains will he be a good leader if elected the next Nigeria president? Abubakar worked in the Nigeria Customs Service for twenty years, rising to become the Deputy Director, as the second highest position in the Service was then known. He retired in April 1989 and took up full-time business and politics. He ran for the office of governor in the Gongola State (now Adamawa and Taraba States) in 1991, and for the Presidency in 1993, placing third after MKO Abiola and Babagana Kingibe in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) primaries. In 1998 he was elected Governor of Adamawa State. While still Governor-Elect he was selected by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate Olusegun Obasanjo as his running mate. The duo went on to win elections in February 1999, and Abubakar was sworn-in as Nigeria's second democratically elected vice president on 29 May 1999. Abubakar's second term as Vice President was marked by a stormy relationship with President Obasanjo. His bid to succeed Obasanjo did not receive the latter's support, and it took a judgment of the Supreme Court to allow Abubakar contest after he was initially disqualified by the Independent National Electoral Commission on the grounds that he had been indicted for financial misconduct by an investigating panel set up at Obasanjo's behest. The Supreme Court ordered the electoral commission to restore Abubakar's name onto the presidential ballot. Abubakar ran on the platform of the Action Congress, having quit the PDP on account of his issues with President Obasanjo. Abubakar lost the election, placing third after Umaru Yar'Adua and Muhammadu Buhari of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Abubakar is a co-founder of Intels, an oil servicing business with extensive operations in Nigeria and abroad. He is also the founder of Adama Beverages Limited, and the American University of Nigeria (AUN), both in Yola, Adamawa. What's your view Nigerians? A group of United Nations agencies has issued a joint statement calling for the ban of misleading and damaging tests meant to ‘assess the virginity’ of women and girls, a common practice in at least 20 countries. Virginity testing is a controversial practice that aims to determine whether a girl has had sexual intercourse or not. What is also referred to as “hymen”, “two-finger” or “per vagina” examination is a misguided gynaecological inspection of female Instruments carried out to allegedly determine whether a woman or girl has had penetrative intercourse. Virginity is valued in some cultures and is used to ascertain a girl’s ‘worth’. Those who are sexually active are seen as being “impure” and “dishonourable”. It is also ironically used to evaluate a sexual assault, even though it inflicts further trauma. Virginity testing is practiced globally and is documented in at least 20 countries, spanning all regions, even though medical experts have stated it is unreliable and has severe repercussions. In a global call for the elimination of violence against women and girls everywhere, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), UN Women and the World Health Organisation (WHO) said in a statement issued during the World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics: “This medically unnecessary, and often times painful, humiliating and traumatic practice must end.” The UN agencies explained that the practice has “no scientific or clinical basis” and that “there is no examination that can prove a girl or woman has had sex”, as the “appearance of girl’s or woman’s hymen cannot prove whether they have had sexual intercourse or are sexually active or not”. The statement went on to denounce the practice as “a violation of the human rights of girls and women, and can be detrimental to women’s and girls’ physical, psychological and social well-being. The examination can be painful, humiliating and traumatic. Given that these procedures are unnecessary and potentially harmful, it is unethical for doctors or other health providers to undertake them.” Dr Princess Nothema Simelela, Assistant Director-General for Family, Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health at the WHO, says, “Health professionals can be great agents for change. With support from health systems and governments, they can recognise that ‘virginity testing’ has no medical or clinical basis, refuse to carry out the harmful practice, and educate the public about this. In doing so, they are upholding the Hippocratic oath of “first do no harm” and safeguarding the human rights of girls and women in their care.” See more:: https://amebo9ja.com/united-nation-fights-to-end-virginity-testing/ Lalasticlaca
