If you sit with a group of young Nigerians today, chances are at least one person has a story about betting. Maybe it’s that near-miss ticket that failed because of a last-minute goal, or a screenshot of a “big win” circulating in WhatsApp groups. Sports betting has woven itself deeply into youth culture—sometimes as a source of excitement, other times as a trap. This isn’t just idle talk. Betting is now a daily reality for millions of Nigerians. Reports suggest more than 60 million Nigerians actively participate in sports betting, and most of them are young people. Even more striking, the industry is projected to generate over US$3.6 billion by 2025, with nearly 93% of bets placed online or via mobile apps. When something becomes this easy to access—literally sitting in the palm of your hand—it stops being just entertainment and starts becoming a lifestyle. But here’s the tension: sports betting is both an economic outlet and a public health time bomb. For some, it’s a chance to make quick cash in a tough economy; for others, it’s a destructive habit that drains finances, ruins academics, and threatens mental health. To really understand its impact, we need to look at why it has become so big, what’s at stake, and how Nigeria can manage the fallout. How Sports Betting Took Over Youth Culture Betting in Nigeria didn’t appear overnight. Football has always been central to Nigerian life, but the betting boom really exploded with the rise of smartphones and cheap internet data. A 2025 University of Calabar study revealed that 36.7% of students had engaged in sports betting, and 30.3% had placed bets in the last year alone. Combine that with widespread mobile payments and user-friendly betting apps, and you see why the culture spread so fast. With as little as ₦100 and a smartphone, anyone can place a bet. For young people already glued to football, adding money to the mix made matches feel even more thrilling. Betting shops still exist, but the real action is happening online—where convenience meets temptation. Betting as a “Side Hustle” Nigeria’s tough economic climate means young people are constantly seeking financial shortcuts. While unemployment is a huge factor, research shows most young bettors don’t see gambling as desperation but as a legitimate money-making strategy. 93.5% bet for the chance of winning big money 82.1% simply want extra income Only 47.1% do it mainly for fun This means betting is less about entertainment and more about chasing financial dreams. But the emotional cost is higher: when money is the main motivation, the highs of winning and the lows of losing hit much harder. It’s why even celebrities like Naira Marley have publicly warned fans, reminding them that “football bet no be work.” Why Nigerian Youths Can’t Resist Betting From my conversations and observations, there are five major drivers: The lure of money – The economy is rough, and betting offers the illusion of quick wins. Entertainment value – Betting makes even low-stakes football matches feel like high drama. Peer influence – When everyone in your group chat is posting odds and tickets, it’s easy to get pulled in. Aggressive marketing – From football kits to influencer giveaways, betting ads are everywhere. Easy access – With apps and mobile wallets, betting has become as simple as sending an SMS. The Hidden Cost: School, Finances, and Mental Health Behind the hype lies a darker reality. Students, in particular, are paying a heavy price. Academic Decline In university hostels, conversations about betting often drown out talk about academics. Studies confirm the impact: 60.7% of problem gamblers admitted using study time for betting Many reported declining motivation, poor grades, and even dropping out Financial Collapse and Crime Gambling addiction quickly turns into financial ruin. Many students sink into debt—borrowing money, skipping fees, or defaulting on loans. In some cases, desperation leads to theft or other criminal activity. Mental Health Toll Experts warn that gambling addiction can be as destructive as substance abuse. It overstimulates the brain’s reward system, creating dependency. The fallout includes: High rates of anxiety, depression, and guilt Increased social withdrawal and impulsive behavior Alarmingly high suicide attempts—problem gambling has one of the highest suicide risks among addictions Yet, stigma keeps many from seeking help. Gambling is seen as normal, but its damage is hidden. Weak Regulation and the Underage Crisis Nigeria’s betting regulation is messy. A Supreme Court ruling handed power to the states, leaving a patchwork of inconsistent laws. Instead of focusing on consumer safety, regulators often clash over tax revenue. Meanwhile, underage betting is a silent epidemic. Despite laws setting 18 as the minimum age, weak enforcement allows minors easy access. Shockingly, over 57% of school-age children have gambled at least once. Some kids even get exposed by running errands to betting shops for their parents. Without stricter verification systems, this crisis will only deepen. What Can Be Done? To curb the risks, solutions must go beyond moral lectures. Here are key interventions: NGO-Led Support Programs – Initiatives like GamblePause Africa are already helping. In just one year, they handled nearly 1,900 counseling referrals, with many cases needing face-to-face rehab. Support groups and therapy must expand nationwide. Industry Responsibility – Betting companies must invest in responsible gambling campaigns with the same energy they put into ads and bonuses. Mandatory deposit limits, self-exclusion tools, and awareness campaigns should be the norm. Unified Regulation – Nigeria needs a clear, nationwide legal framework for betting, not a fragmented state-vs-federal battle. Education and Literacy Programs – Schools and universities should include financial literacy and anti-gambling education, helping students understand the risks behind “quick money.” Stricter Age Verification – Mandatory ID checks and digital verification tools should be enforced to protect minors. Final Thoughts: Betting With the Future Sports betting has become more than a pastime—it’s a defining feature of Nigerian youth life. But while it fuels excitement and dreams of wealth, it also threatens academics, finances, and mental health. The good news is, it’s not too late. With stronger regulation, open conversations, and targeted education, Nigeria can shift the narrative. Because at the end of the day, young Nigerians deserve more than a betting slip. They deserve opportunities that don’t gamble away their future. |

Lucifer isn't the devil. It certainly isn't the name of an angel, fallen or otherwise. The angels of God who are named in the Bible (Michael and Gabriel) have Hebrew names, even in the NT (again, which was written in Greek). The names of angels who war against God are also given by their Hebrew names (satan [Re 12:9] and abaddon [Re 9:11]). In fact, all the names of individuals who are of Hebrew ancestry are given by their Hebrew names in the NT, transliterated (not translated) into Greek, and from Greek into English. The word Lucifer doesn't even actually occur in the original Bible texts because lucifer is a Latin word (it means light-bearer). The word in the OT translated Lucifer in Is 14:12 is heylel, used only once and derived from halal (1984 of Strong's Hebrew Concordance), a verb meaning to shine. In Greek, the word for light-bearer is φωσφόρος, transliterated phosphoros, and used once in the NT, καὶ ἔχομεν βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον ᾧ καλῶς ποιεῖτε προσέχοντες ὡς λύχνῳ φαίνοντι ἐν αὐχμηρῷ τόπῳ ἕως οὗ ἡμέρα διαυγάσῃ καὶ φωσφόρος ἀνατείλῃ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν which we have in one English translation as, We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed , as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn , and the day star arise in your hearts… – 2 Pe 1:19, KVJ Read full story on:- https://043nobs.com.ng/2020/03/15/amazing-proves-that-satan-and-lucifer-is-not-the-same-person/ |

Slovenia's first mosque opened in the capital Ljubljana on Monday after surmounting financial hurdles and right-wing opposition, 50 years after the initial request to build was made. Mufti of the Islamic Community of Slovenia Nedzad Grabus addresses the media on February 3, 2020 Opponents of the project -- including those who criticised its Qatari financing -- have repeatedly tried to halt it, and pig heads and blood have also been left on the site. Islamic community head Mufti Nedzad Grabus said the mosque's opening was "a turning point in our lives" Slovenia is the last former Yugoslav state to get a mosque, making Ljubljana a capital rather than a provincial town on the edge of the world," he told a press conference. Muslims in the predominantly Catholic Alpine country first filed a request to build a mosque in the late 1960s while Slovenia was still part of the former Communist Yugoslavia. The community finally received permission 15 years ago, but ran into opposition from right-wing politicians and groups, as well as financial troubles. Construction, which began in 2013, cost some 34 million euros ($39 million), out of which 28 million euros were Qatari donations, according to Grabus. President Donald Trump's decision to kill Qasem Soleimani has left the international community reeling. As diplomatic crises go, this ticks a lot of boxes. The US killed an Iranian general in Iraq -- a country where it has kept a constant military presence since the 2003 invasion to overthrow Saddam Hussein. However bad relations between the US and Iran had become under Trump, the killing of a military official by drone strike caught everyone, including America's closest allies, off guard. President Trump moved Wednesday to de-escalate hostilities with Iran, signaling no new U.S. military strikes following an Iranian missile barrage on Iraqi bases housing American and allied military forces that resulted in no casualties. “Iran appears to be standing down,” Mr. Trump said in a televised address on Wednesday, his first public reaction beyond a tweet Tuesday evening after the salvos of missiles were fired from Iran Full details >>> https://043nobs.com.ng/2020/01/09/usa-and-iran-reach-agreements/

Iran struck back at the United States early Wednesday for killing a top Revolutionary Guards commander, firing a series of ballistic missiles at two military bases in Iraq housing American troops in a major escalation between the two longtime foes. It was Iran's most direct assault on America since the 1979 seizing of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, and Iranian state TV said it was in revenge for the U.S. killing of Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani, whose death last week in an American drone strike near Baghdad prompted angry calls to avenge his slaying. A U.S. and Iraqi officials said there were no immediate reports of casualties, though buildings were still being searched. The strikes, which came as Iran buried Soleimani, raised fears that the two longtime foes were closer to war. But there were some indications that there would not be further retaliation on either side, at least in the short term.
