PoliticsNo Attempted Jail-break In Yola Prison – NPS by izu777(op): 3:35pm On Nov 30, 2014
Source: .com.ng

The Nigeria Prison Service (NPS) has debunked media report about an attempted jailbreak by some convicted soldiers on Friday in Yola Prison, Adamawa State.

The spokesperson of the service, Mr Ope Fatinukun, in a statement reiterated that there was no commotion whatsoever at the Yola prisons. The statemenet reads: “There was no pandemonium, commotion nor gun shots fired into air in Yola prison as reported by some media houses.
“What really happened was arguments among inmates around 7.30 pm after prayers on Thursday November 27, 2014.The argument was quickly brought under control.”

Fatinukun further added that the comptroller of Adamawa State prison command, A S Ekijere, was in the Yola prison yesterday November 28, 2014 for his fourth quarterly visit to all prisons under his command between 8am and 3pm.

For legal and security reasons, the prison spokesperson also urged the media to always use appropriate nomenclatures in describing inmates. He said: “Inmates can either be addressed as convicted inmates (CM) or awaiting trial inmates (ATI) rather than derogatory words like ‘incarcerated soldiers or civilians’”, the statement added.

PoliticsPDP Denies Attacking Kwara Governor’s Convoy, Warns APC by izu777(op): 9:28pm On Nov 29, 2014
Source: .com.ng

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara said it had no hands in the alleged attack on Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed’s convoy by some unidentified persons in Kaiama on 25 November.

Chief Rex Olawoye, the Chairman of the party’s Publicity Committee, declared this in a statement in Ilorin on Friday.
NAN reports that Kwara Governor had lodged a formal complaint to the state Commissioner of Police on the attack on his convoy. Ahmed alleged that some members of the opposition party in the state were behind the attack.

The governor’s convoy was attacked after he flagged-off the Kishi-Kaiama Road and inaugurated the Kaiama General Hospital.

Olawoye, who described the attack as “ignoble”, said that it was “a breach of law and protocol”.

He, however, called for proper investigation into the attack, saying that “the perpetrators of the shameful behaviour should be brought to book”.

“We join meaningful Kwarans in condemning the barbaric action in its totality as it runs counter to the principles on which PDP operates.

“PDP is run under total compliance to the rules and laws of this great nation and is acknowledged for discipline and great respect for constituted authority,” Olawoye said.

He advised the All Progressives Congress (APC) led government to desist from shifting the blame of their woes on the PDP.

“We enjoin the APC led government to look inward and see where APC has reared, nurtured and developed young men into unwholesome business of hooliganism,” he said.

Olawoye, however, said that it was unbelievable that any thug would have the audacity to way lay the calibre of a serving governor with retinue of security surrounding him.

According to him, if there was any protest during the governor’s visit to Kaiama, it was an indication that everybody was tired of the government that neglected the people of the area.

Olawoye urged the governor to wake up from his slumber and be more responsive to the yearnings of people for socio-economic, political and physical infrastructural development.

PoliticsOgoni Youths Protest Against Apc’s Choice Of Consensus Gubernatorial Candidate by izu777(op): 9:08pm On Nov 29, 2014
Source: .com.ng

No fewer than a thousand youths from Ogoniland Thursday stormed the Rivers state capital Port Harcourt and several other parts of the State to protest against the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to adopt the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Hon. Dakuku Peterside, as the party’s consensus candidate in the 2015 governorship election.

Peterside and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Magnus Abe, were the frontrunners in the gubernatorial race within the APC.
While both of them come from the Rivers South East senatorial district, Peterside hails from Opobo while Abe is from Ogoni.

The youths said they were protesting against Governor Chibuike Amaechi’s decision to drop their son, Abe, in favour of Peterside.

They blocked major junctions of the East-West Road at Eleme, Akpajo and Tai in the early hours of yesterday before heading to the main gate of Government House, Port Harcourt.

At the main gate of Government House along Azikiwe Road, the protesting youths set bonfire of tyres and other incendiary materials; chanting war and anti-Amaechi and Peterside songs.

They said Amaechi deceived the Ogonis into thinking that he would give the governorship ticket to them.

The youths insisted that the governor’s action in anointing Peterside was the height
of marginalisation of the Ogoni people.

One of the protesters said: “Governor Amaechi made us to defect from the PDP to the APC. He made us to fight the federal government. Governor Amaechi deceived us into following him and now he wants to marginalise us.

“Amaechi used us and dumped us. Why will he want to make somebody from Opobo a governor? Opobo is single community. They are a minority. Why will he want us, the Ogonis, who have four local government areas to concede to a minority? So, we are saying that an Ogoni man must become the governor of Rivers State in 2015.”

As the crowd in front of the Government House gate were becoming uncontrollable, the police used tear gas and fired into the air to disperse them at about 10a.m.

While, the protest was on, Abe went on air to dissociate himself from the protest.
Speaking through his media aide, Honour Sirawoo, Abe said he had never preached violence and would not resort to that as a means of settling any grievance.

He also expressed doubts if the protesters were really Ogoni youths.
Speaking with journalists later in the day, the Public Relations Officer of the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP), Legborsi Esaen, said Amaechi had betrayed the Ogonis.

Esaen said: “We have resolved to support any party that presents an Ogoni as its governorship candidate. We are no longer prepared to play second fiddle in the politics of Rivers State. It’s either governorship or nothing.

“We were informed that some Ogoni youths were staging a peaceful protest in front of government house and one of them was shot. We are still trying to locate where he is and how serious his condition is.”

Meanwhile, Peterside trekked and danced with his supporters from his house in Old GRA, Port Harcourt, to the APC secretariat, about 500 metres, to pick his nomination form.

Addressing journalists after the collection of the forms, Peterside assured the people that he would consolidate on the achievements of Amaechi if elected governor of the state in 2015.

He also promised to reduce poverty and improve on the standard of education in the state.

While reacting to Peterside’s endorsement, the former Minister of State for Education and governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nyesom Wike, said Amaechi has cleared the road for victory.

Addressing journalists in Port Harcourt, Wike said the choice of Peterside as APC has foreclosed the chances of the Ogonis or Kalabari from becoming deputy governor in the APC.

The development, he said, would work in favour of the PDP as the Kalabaris could still benefit in PDP if he emerges as the party’s flag bearer.

His words: “Andoni is the local government area where the Deputy National Chairman of PDP comes from, Prince Uche Secondus. In the Riverine area such as Andoni where Secondus comes from, PDP has overwhelming support.”

Obio Akpor where I come from has about 400,000 votes.
“Assuming my people hate me, won’t I have their votes? And mind you, Opobo man cannot give a Kalabari man deputy governor; you can’t give an Ogoni man deputy governor. The APC have excluded Ogoni and Kalabari, but we in PDP the chances are there that a Kalabari man may become deputy governor. So it is the best opportunity the PDP has.

“I am happy that it is my friend Dakuku Peterside that the APC gave its ticket. So the coast is clearer. So let’s see who will win. Remember also that Amaechi is not running for the third term as a governor. He is not running.

“I know he wants to bring somebody that will protect him, somebody that will block all the looting that has taken place in his administration. So I am not threatened by the choice of APC governorship aspirant. The coast is very clear between APC and PDP governorship candidates. The coast is very very clear for me.”

PoliticsJonathan's 'evil' Actions Destroying Democracy - Obasanjo by izu777(op): 10:33pm On Nov 26, 2014
Barely one week after he criticized President Goodluck Jonathan's administration as having performed below average, former President Olusegun Obasanjo struck again at the President, stating that President Jonathan's recent actions are capable of destroying Nigeria's nascent democracy.

He stated this at a book Launch in honour of the pioneer chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC, Mustapha Akanbi‎, in Abuja. Mr. Obasanjo, who was the Chairman of the occasion added that the president should stop encouraging 'verbal violence which may not physically hurt but has ways of degenerating into physical violence'.

Mr. Obasanjo said the greatest indictment against any administration is to be seen trying to destroy opposition of all sort‎s which invariably mean destroying democracy.

"Management of democracy without resorting to brute force and dictatorial tendencies must be cultivated," the former President said.

"As a leader, you must not deliberately do evil or condone evil. You should know that you will one day give account to God, you may cover up here, but before God, there is no cover up."

The former president also spoke at lenght on the President's handling of the Boko Haram insurgency, ‎corruption, the economy and youth unemployment.

On insecurity, Mr. Obasanjo said Boko Haram is not out to "frustrate anyone's political efforts" and lamented that it took Mr. Jonathan the years to ‎fully understand the menace.

On corruption, Mr. Obasanjo said, "when the head is rotten, the whole body is useless"

On the economy, he said Nigeria would continue to sink deeper and that what Nigerians are told about the state of the economy "is not truly what the economy is".

"The economy is in doldrums, if not in reverse," he said.

Mr. Obasanjo's latest attack on the President is coming seven days after he rated Mr. Jonathan's performance as below average.

The former president had spoken last weekend in Abeokuta while addressing book writers as part of activities marking the Ake Arts and Book Festival.

"I rate this current administration below average," Mr. Obasanjo said in response to a question about Mr. Jonathan's performance.

The former president also said he deserved credit for helping an individual from a minority tribe become Nigeria's President. "Rather than take blame for bringing Jonathan to power, I should be taking credit," he added.

The Nigerian presidency responded Sunday, slamming Mr. Obasanjo and describing his rating as untrue and misleading. In a statement in Abuja, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe, said Mr. Obasanjo's rating was at variance "with the facts on the ground".

Mr. Okupe said President Jonathan had performed so well that "in terms of performance and achievements, no administration since 1960 when Nigeria gained independence from Britain, has done as much as that of President Jonathan".

PoliticsAFCON: Why We Can’t Sack Keshi — NFF Finally Opens Up by izu777(op): 10:24pm On Nov 26, 2014
Nigerians calling for the immediate sack of Super Eagles Coach are in for a shocking disappointment as the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation have admitted that their hands are tied where Stephen Keshi’s tenure as coach of the Eagles is concerned.

Nigerians are calling for the resignation of Keshi following his failure to qualify Nigeria for next year’s AFCON defence of the title he won in 2013.
But the Edo born coach still wants to remain as coach.

He is yet to be offered a new deal and the NFF have been silent on his future, a situation which a board member of the NFF said was out of their control.

“The last time we did what we thought was best, we were forced to revert the changes by people in high places. This time around we are helpless”, the source lamented.

“We are scared of announcing we won’t renew his deal due to what happened last time and unless he resigns or walks away we can’t help out”, he further added.

Keshi himself has insisted he is still the best man for the job.

PoliticsAbia Guber Poll: Alex Otti, 'a Desperate And Selfish Politician' - Abia Commissi by izu777(op): 5:01pm On Nov 25, 2014
Source: .com.ng

Abia State commissioner for Information & Strategy, Dr A. Agbazuere, has described an APGA governorship aspirant in the state, Dr Alex Otti, as a desperate and selfish politician who is trying to distort facts by claiming that Abia State is running a non-indigene policy.

According to Dr Agbazuere, Abia is not and has never ran a non-indigene policy. He explained that what happened in the past was that some states sacked Abia workers from their states and Abia State retaliated.
He added that even when Abia workers sacked from other states were yet to be recalled, governor of the state, Theodore Orji, in his usual fatherly disposition, later directed the recall of the affected workers from other states.

Politics2015 Election: Atiku Splashes Out Another N8.5m On Sokoto APC by izu777(op): 4:49pm On Nov 25, 2014
Source: .com.ng

Just few days after he splashed over N16 million on Katsina chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, The Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has made another magnanimous donation to the tune of N8.5 million to the Sokoto State APC.

The former VP who is one of the four major aspirants jostling for the party’s presidential ticket for the 2015 elections, made the donation during his visit to the state, as part of his countrywide campaign to woo the delegates to the party’s December 10 presidential primaries.
“My aspiration is never a do-or-die affair, but to stabilise the affairs and alleviate the suffering of the people in the country,” said Atiku, who has promised to support anyone who emerges as the flag bearer of the party in the coming presidential election, as agreed by all the aspirants.

He said the APC was committed to the development of the nation, as well as sustained peace and unity.

He therefore called on Nigerians to believe in the party’s commitment to helping Nigerians out of the present state of the nation. He also promised to protect the interest of the people if elected.

Here is the breakdown of Atiku’s donation: he gave N5 million to the Sokoto State chapter of the APC to facilitate its activities; N1 million for the party’s elders and N2.5 million was for the 50 delegates from the state.
FamilyMIRACLE! Woman Delivers Quadruplets After 18 Years Of Childlessness by izu777(op):
It was nothing short of a miracle when 44-year old woman, Clara Dominique, who has been looking for a child for the past 18 years, was last Saturday successfully delivered of quadruplets.

The quadruplets are three girls and a male.

They were delivered at the Graceland Medical Centre in Benin City, Edo State.
Mrs. Clara, who got married in 1996, said it was God’s grace that kept her and her husband through the trials of childlessness.

She said they refused to keep friends because of the problem.

“I am happy that my husband and I were able to stay together to this day to witness the blessings of the Lord. My husband has been encouraging me that God will do it for us. My husband never contemplated driving me away.

“I was happy when the scan showed it was four. Sometimes I think of how I will carry the four of them. I have not seen somebody delivered four babies. It was not easy for me to carry the pregnancy. At a time the weight of the pregnancy was too much for me.”

“I was the one dedicating children at our church every last Sunday of the month. I was the first to visit anybody that I knew that gave birth so that I can give them what I have. I am not the jealous type.

“It was my husband’s cousins that tried to take the matter up but my husband stopped them. My parents were also there to encourage us. That was what kept us together because the family pressure was not there. They knew we were Christians and nobody could penetrate my husband and I.”

One of the doctors at the hospital, Dr. Oni Samson, said the babies were delivered through cesarean section.

She said, “You don’t expect a woman that is having multiple births to do that through the vaginal. This is the first time we had quadruplets in this hospital. The children are okay. The ante-natal was uneventful. They are still under care for them to be stabilized.”

Politics100 Lawmakers Ready To Be Arrested With Tambuwal – Rep by izu777(op): 7:52am On Nov 24, 2014
Despite repeated denial by the police authorities of having any intention of arresting the Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal, the opposition party House members have continued stoking the fire of controversy trailing the alleged arrest plan.

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Justice, Dr. Ali Ahmad, on Sunday warned the police against any attempt to arrest the Speaker of the House, Aminu Tambuwal.

Ahmad said 100 members of the House would be ready to be arrested alongside Tambuwal.

He said, “If anybody is planning to arrest Mr. Speaker, they should be ready to arrest over 100 legislators. We would follow him to the prison. If they won’t open the prison door, we would break it and go inside.

“If they are arresting the Speaker, they should be prepared; we would all go in there. If they have shackles, they should go and buy more.

The lawmaker representing Ilorin East and South Federal Constituency said the invasion of the National Assembly complex by the police last Thursday was illegal and urged the police to follow the Constitution in the discharge of their functions and avoid being manipulated by the executive.

He spoke in an interview with journalists in Ilorin, Kwara State, while inaugurating the vocational centre of the University of Ilorin Students’ Union, equipped by him.

He also said the police should be careful and avoid being used to perpetrate unconstitutional acts in the crisis in the Ekiti State House of Assembly.

He said the rating of President Goodluck Jonathan had dipped as a result of the victimisation of Tambuwal, the police onslaught on the National Assembly and the crisis in the Ekiti legislature.

He stressed, “We would do anything for Nigeria’s democracy not to be sacrificed on the altar of somebody’s personal ego. Nigeria is a constitutional country and is a government that is being governed by constitution.

“It’s not a kingdom; you cannot just wake up and say you want somebody to disappear. No, you are there because of the constitution; you will continue to be there because of the constitution and when you leave, you leave because of the constitution.

PoliticsNSA Denies Ordering Arrest Of Tambuwal, As PDP Waves Off Impeachment Threat... by izu777(op): 11:25am On Nov 23, 2014
The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has debunked the report that the NSA, Col. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd.) after consultation with the Vice President, Arch. Namadi Sambo, ordered for the arrest of Speaker House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal in the attack on Policemen and the disturbance of public peace.

Also, it has come to light that the threat of impeachment of President Jonathan by some members of the House of Representatives following last week Thursday’s debacle in which the police barred and tear-gassed the Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, in the precinct of the House, may be a hoax after all.

THISDAY checks reveal that the aggrieved members contemplated the move against the president out of annoyance about what happened to the Speaker, some opposition principal officers, and themselves.

“It was a spur of the moment kind of thing. It was an angry reaction to what they considered as humiliation and abuse of our rights by the police,” a member who was involved in the confusion but preferred anonymity told THISDAY.

“We were really angry when what happened that day happened. So, we all went into the chambers in a state of mind that was beclouded with anger and we sought revenge by wanting to take on the president. But before we dispersed the tension has subsided.
“I don’t think we will re-visit the issue again when we resume,” another lawmaker explained.

It was learnt that after the House went into an executive session last Thursday, some of the members, bristling with anger from their encounter with the police, saw the whole episode as being orchestrated by the presidency. They, therefore, wanted to raise a motion for the impeachment of the president.
However, Tambuwal, after soothing frayed nerves of his colleagues, appealed to them set aside the matter.

“The Speaker told us that if the House toes the line of those urging it to commence with the process of removing the president, then it would only overheat the polity; considering the fact that the 2015 election is just around the corner,” an aide to a principal officer who was among those who scaled the barred gate told THISDAY.

Whether true or false, the reality on ground is that some members favourably disposed to this issue had collected signatures of about 170 of their colleagues in their bid. It was also learnt that although they have heeded the Speaker’s counsel in the interim, they may not do so again if he or any of them; or the House collectively, is put in the line of fire again.
“Expect to see more fireworks from us when we resume if the presidency or the police maltreat or arrest the Speaker,” a ranking member said.

Indication that the Speaker is yet to hear the last from the executive arm emerged during the weekend when he issued a statement that he is aware “that the Inspector General of Police has ordered that he be invited to the Force Headquarters and that he be arrested if he resisted.”

Tambuwal, who said his attention was drawn to the matter by publication in some media, said “he is a law abiding citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria who has no immunity against arrest and prosecution except privileges as may be provided by the Legislative Powers and Privileges Act.”

He said he is “available, ready and willing to answer any lawful invitation from any of the Security agencies on any matter for which they may require his attention,” but expressed “dismay at the unprofessional conduct of the Nigerian Police in the attempt to stop him from accessing the House of Representatives chambers on November 20 to preside over the Special Session of the House on the State of Emergency Extension requested by Mr. President, for which he had recalled members from their working recess.

Taking exception to the police rationale for their action, the Speaker’s statement by his spokesperson, Mallam Imam Imam, reminded the police “that as a public institution that provides common services for all the arms of government, they must not allow themselves to be used by one of the arms to undermine the others.”

It appears the situation may become messy as the House insisted on the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, appearing before it in person on Tuesday to explain what happened last week.
