Boko Haram has released nearly 200 hostages, most of them women, who were kidnapped from a village in the northeast Nigerian state of Yobe, a community leader and a military source told AFP on Saturday.

A total of 192 people were released on Friday from two Islamist enclaves, where they had been kept since a January 6 raid on Katarko, 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the state capital Damaturu. In all, 218 women and children were abducted.

“Boko Haram have released 192 of our women they kidnapped early this month,” Goni Mari, a Katarko community leader told AFP from Damaturu. “They brought them in two batches in four trucks and dropped them at Girbuwa village, eight kilometres from Damaturu, from where we conveyed them to the city and they were taken into government custody.”

A military court in Abuja has freed an army Commander who had been standing trial over an offence committed during an operation against Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State.

The general court martial, sitting in Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja and presided over by Brigadier General M.S. Yusuf, on January 20, discharged and acquitted Lt Col Suleiman Saidu Tilawan, the former Commanding Officer of 103 Battalion on the charge of failure to follow channel of communication that was preferred against him. This came after the defence counsel made a no-case submission. After going through the prosecutor’s case, the court upheld the no case submission and consequently discharged and acquitted the officer.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says the unprecedented attention given to matters concerning the wellbeing of Nigerians by President Goodluck Jonathan has repositioned the health sector, resulting in better healthcare and a record increase in life expectancy in the country.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Sunday said the health sector under President Jonathan has been given a priority place resulting in the formulation and implementation of strategic policies to strengthen the national health system for effective and affordable delivery of health services to Nigerians as contained in the manifesto of the PDP.

The party said the last four years have witnessed an aggressive reorganization of the health ministry and its paratatals as well as rehabilitation and re-equipping of federal medical institutions including all teaching hospitals, transforming them from consulting clinics they were reduced, to comprehensive secondary and referral life saving institutions.

"We recall that President Goodluck Jonathan had in 2010 launched the National Strategic Health Development Plan (2010-2015) which clearly spelt out government's plans in that very important sector. Four years down the line, the project has been pursued with vigour and unquestionable commitment and the results are palpable.

"Using the Saving One Million Lives Initiatives and National Health Insurance Scheme, it is incontrovertible that in the last four years of Jonathan Presidency, Nigerians have more access to adequate and affordable health care, resulting in a record increase in life expectancy in the nation.

"Indeed, over a million lives have been saved directly under the Saving One Million Lives initiative by scaling up cost-effective interventions in maternal and child health care, nutrition, prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV, malaria control and eradication of polio.

"Today, maternal mortality has dropped by more than 50 percent following the provision of Midwives Service Scheme and the attendant facilities in our hospitals. The Nigerian child now receives free diabetes treatment in all public hospitals across the country also.

"Under the National Strategic Health Development Plan, new technologies in modern medical equipment are now available in most Federal medical institutions, positioning them to handle medical emergencies and disease control. Thus, cases such as kidney, heart and brain ailments as well as cancer are being effectively handled in Nigeria at present.

"After about ten years, open-heart surgery has resumed in Nigerian hospitals. So far, more than 55 of such surgeries have been conducted in our hospitals in 2013 with University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan among others as front runners.

"Microsurgery of the brain is also now being conducted at Federal medical Centre, Umuahia while laparoscopic surgery for fibroid cases has since commenced at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe. Also full laparoscopic services has commenced at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Ile Ife.

"This is in addition to the establishment of Geriatric Units for the elderly in Federal Tertiary Hospitals while renal transplant is now handled in most teaching hospitals across the country.

"Following the reviving of investment in medical research which was neglected in the past, Nigeria has been able to record breakthrough in the management of sickle cell anemia with the University of Benin Teaching Hospital performing an infusion cell into sickle anemia patience in 2012.

"The National Orthopedic Hospitals in Enugu, Kano and Lagos as well as Federal Medical Centre, Yenegoa among others are now performing Total knee and hip replacement thereby giving lifeline to accident victims in the country. Great successes have been recorded with record high number of VVF repairs at the National Obstetric Fistula Centres using state of the art equipment," the party said.


The PDP added that the repositioning of the sector under President Jonathan enabled the country to achieve the globally acknowledged feat on the control of Ebola Virus Disease, which has made our health system a model for other countries.

"In the same vein, the country recorded another health milestone with the eradication of polio. Following our aggressive drive, no new case of the disease has been recorded in the last six months and this qualifies Nigeria to be declared polio-free this month in line with global requirements.

The PDP also said that, as a way of strengthening the capacity of health workers towards job satisfaction and better service delivery, "the administration in April 2014 launched the National Diploma in Paramedics Technology in addition to the registration and training of Medical Physicists in Nigeria.

"Nigeria now has a Revised Curriculum for Undergraduate Medical and Dental Education as well as Curriculum on Herbal Medicine Development while a Committee on development of indigenous herbal products for promotion of exports has been established.

"To take the sector to the next level, the present administration has already inaugurated a Ministerial Committee to unlock the private sector potentials and pave the way for the establishment of world class specialist hospitals and high-end diagnostic centres in each of the six geo- political zones of the country.

"This is in line with the vision of the Jonathan administration to ensure that Nigerians have quicker access to specialized medical attention as contained in the manifesto of our great party," the statement concluded

Indications may have emerged that President Goodluck Jonathan is being hypocritical with his persistent claim of reviving the railway. This follows a recent accusation by the All Progressives Congress, APC that the President has bluntly refused to grant the necessary right-of-way approval to the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) for the construction of its redline light rail project from Iddo to Ifo in Ogun State with a capacity to carry one million passengers per day. This is in spite of the fact that investors were ready to invest over one billion dollars in the project.

In a statement issued in Lagos on Saturday by its national publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said in failing to grant the approval, which has been pending since May 2013, President Jonathan premised his action on the fact that Lagos is an ‘enemy state’.

“President Jonathan is simply being hypocritical when he listed the revival of the railway as part of his administration’s so-called achievements during the kick-off of his electioneering campaign in Lagos, and during which he also tried to project himself and his party as friends of the South-west in general and Lagos in particular.

His words and actions since assuming office six years ago do not support that he claims to have revived the railway but did not tell Lagosians how he has stopped, in its tracks, the LAMATA Red Line Light Rail Project that would have alleviated the suffering of Lagosians as they commute daily across the densely-populated city, not to talk of the loss of over 30,000 jobs that would have been created by the project”, it said.

APC said there is no stronger indication that President Jonathan holds the South-west in general and Lagos State in particular in contempt than his failure to grant the right-of-way approval for this project, considering its massive benefits that include ease of transportation, the decongestion of the city, the creation of, at least, 30, 000 jobs and the attraction of huge investments that the project, if approved, would have brought to the state.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) members of killing two of its (PDP) members in two separate incidents in the state.

The PDP, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Saturday alleged that APC members last Friday shot and killed two members of the PDP, Hon. Hope George and Friday Mbadee Onura.

However, the APC has described accusations that its members shot and killed two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members as wild, unfounded, spurious and mere hogwash.

According to the statement issued on behalf of the PDP State Chairman, Felix Obuah, by his Special Adviser, Jerry Needam, “Members of the APC opened fire on a vehicle which had the member representing Ogu/Bolo in the House of Representatives, Hon. Bright Tamuno Gogo; Rivers State House of Assembly Candidate, Datorudimabo Adams and the immediate past councillor of Okrika Local Government council, Hon Hope George as occupants.

“Hon. Hope George died, while others, including Hon. Bright Gogo, sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds and are receiving treatment in the hospital.” Obuah said the victims were on their way to attend the governorship rally of the PDP in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State when they were attacked.

According to him, “About same time on Friday January 9 members of Eleme local government Area chapter of the APC, led by Isaac Obee, shot and killed PDP stalwart dead, Friday Mbadee Onura while others are in critical condition in various hospitals following gunshot wounds they sustained during the attack.”

He accused the state Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, and key officers of the APC of inciting criminals against members of the PDP.

The Presidency on Sunday said contrary to what many might believe, Nigeria is winning the war on corruption under President Goodluck Jonathan’s watch.

It said although it might not be immediately clear to many, the fight against corruption has been taken several notches higher since Jonathan came on board.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, made this known in a statement made available to journalists in Abuja.

“There is no doubt that Nigeria is winning the war on corruption. It may not be immediately apparent to those who do not understand the dynamics of applying creative techniques in upturning an age-old habit that has cost this country a lot in terms of financial resources; but to those like the officials in Transparency International knowledgeable in the nuances of fighting corruption, a lot of grounds have been covered,” Okupe said.

He said the nation’s movement from its 144th position on Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index last year to 136th position this year was an indication that a lot had been achieved by this administration in the anti-corruption fight.

He recalled that when the oganisation gave its verdict last year and Nigerians held the view that the Federal Government was not doing enough to fight corruption, the administration had assured that the Jonathan administration remained focus in its determination to completely eradicate corruption in public service.

He said the latest TI rating was a proof that Jonathan’s effort in the fight against corruption is yielding positive results.

He said, “There is no doubt that since President Jonathan came on board as president of this country, the fight against corruption has been taken several notches higher.

“Unlike any previous administration in the country‘s history, the present administration has instituted institutional reforms aimed at giving fillip to the anti-corruption war.

“One major area this fight has been visible is the agricultural sector where the administration’s carefully articulated and executed Agricultural Transformation Agenda ended forty years of corruption in the distribution of fertilizers to farmers.

“The same thing applies to the reforms in Ports where we have successfully plugged many loopholes which some corrupt officials had exploited to delay genuine business transactions and harm the Nigerian economy.

“The Old corrupt system of Government Direct Procurement and Distribution of Fertiliser as well as the operations in the various Ports and government agencies contributed in no small measure to the negative rating of Nigeria by the Transparency International and other global watchdogs.

“Also, the determination of President Jonathan to tackle corruption head on has seen the government take some other far reaching steps like the cleaning up of the import waiver system, which before his coming was fraught with corruption, nepotism, arbitrariness and other irregularities.

“As a result of this, billions of Naira were lost to the economy as the real business people failed to benefit.

“While it was important for suspects involved in corruption cases to be tried and if found guilty sent to jail, what is more important is for the development of mechanisms, the institution of structures and the enactment of policies that would plug loopholes and foster transparency such that the propensity for corruption is made more difficult and eliminated completely.”

This, he said, was what the Jonathan administration had been doing and that was the template adopted by countries like Denmark and New Zealand, which are at the top of the TI index.

Like New Zealand, Okupe said the Jonathan administration was deploying Information and Communications Technology to tackle corruption head on.

In reaction to a criticism-laden comment credited to elder statesman and former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Dr. Christopher Kolade, on the leadership of the nation, specifically as it relates to the fight against the insurgency facing the country, The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the former diplomat's statement as mind-boggling and embarrassing.



In a statement by the National Publicity ‎Secretary of PDP, Olisa Metuh, PDP said, "We regret that Dr. Kolade, an eminent Nigerian with very senior diplomatic credentials, who also served as the Chairman of SURE-P, a special development and empowerment programme of the Jonathan administration, apparently got his facts mixed up about the character and person of the President and the nature of the overall security challenges in our country.

"We in the PDP, in our usual high moral ground of decency, decided to exercise restraint expecting Dr. Kolade to retract his statement, but such never came, hence this reaction.", PDP said.

The party added that ‎while it recognizes the inalienable right of citizens to hold opinions and fully express themselves, especially given the institutionalized freedom Nigerians now enjoy under the present administration, "it is only fair that comments, particularly those from prominent persons in the mold of Dr. Kolade, must be based only on the truth.”

PDP said it is mind-boggling and embarrassing that the eminent technocrat could attempt to stand history on its head by stating that President Goodluck Jonathan went to a rally in Kano state “the next day” after 59 students were killed in Yobe state.

In a move not akin to Nigerian politicians, four members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) of Ondo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have tendered their resignation from the committee to allow for full harmony to return to the party in the state and to mobilise for the victory of Jonathan in the forthcoming election


The affected officers are Adeduro Charles, Vice Chairman (Ondo Central), Wemimo Olaniran (Financial Secretary) Yomi Akinfenwa (Legal Adviser) and Akndulureni Sampson (Auditor)
With the resignation of the party officials, the state Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has been handed almost absolute control of the state chapter of the party.

The PDP National Working Committee (NWC) had recently announced the dissolution of the state executive of the party but the decision was upturned by the court.

However, few days after the court victory, some of the party officials tendered their resignation, saying it was done for the sake of peace.

In a letter of resignation dated December 2 and addressed to the national chairman of the party and copied to President Goodluck Jonathan and Senate President, David Mark, they said their action became necessary because of the recent developments in the state chapter of the party.

The letter read in part: “given recent developments in the state chapter of our dear party, there is the compelling need for proper harmonisation of the various interests that have cropped up especially as agreed by leaders of the party at both the state and national levels during meetings chaired by the President of the Senate, David Mark”.

In addition, they said their resignation also became imperative in order to mobilise for the victory of Jonathan in the forthcoming election and to maintain unity within the party.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) and frontline aspirant for the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial ticket for the 2015 elections in Rivers State, Senator Magnus Abe is demanding a public apology from his party due to a statement credited to the party's publicity secretary in which he was indirectly described as lacking in character and integrity to govern the state.


In a speech at a senatorial stakeholders’ meeting held at Eleme last Sunday and made available to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tiesday, Abe said he was appalled by comments credited to the publicity secretary of the party on why the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources
(Downstream), Hon. Dakuku Peterside, was chosen as the consensus gubernatorial candidate of the party.

Those present at the meeting included, a member of the Board of Trustees of APC, Dr. Sam Sam-Jaja; Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Victor Giadom, and the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Bebe Ukpabi.

Others were the Deputy National Secretary of APC, Hon. Oji Ngofa; member of the House of Representatives Chief Barinadaa Mpigi; Chief S.B Nuate; Chief Felix Nweke and the state Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Fred Igwe.

Members of the state House of Assembly representing Tai, Eleme, Oyigbo, Khana, Opobo/Nkoro and Gokana constituencies; the Administrator, Greater Port Harcourt City Development Authority, Aleruchi Cookey-Gam; the host Chief Marcus Nle-Eji, and the Chairmen of Gokana, Eleme and Khana local government areas, as well as the state Women Leader of the APC, Madam Caroline Nagbo, were also in attendance.

Addressing the meeting, Abe lamented: “Today is very special and solemn for a lot of us. Like Opu Senibo Sam Sam-Jaja rightly pointed out, ‘The party took a decision’. That decision was painful to a lot of us, not necessarily for me but for my people. Regrettably, a lot of people did not understand or respect the sensibilities of the issue.

“In a situation where there was no contest, the natural status should be no victor and no vanquished.

“My people, the Ogoni people have a dream; they too, like other people in the country would like to one day produce a governor for Rivers State. That dream is real, that dream is alive and that dream will not die. It is not a dream about Magnus Abe; it is not a dream about any individual. It was the hope, aspiration and expectation of a people. And I felt that if it was not meant for political exigency, it was not just a feeling of the Ogoni people, there were people all across Rivers State who felt sympathetic with that aspiration. And in a political setting where there are always much pains, some of those feelings would have been better respected and that is one of the things I did not like.”

“The Publicity Secretary of the party issued a statement to outline the qualities by which someone was chosen; nobody was chosen for any quality. The governor spoke and we agreed that we will consent to a consensus candidate. We did not need to give reason by which that consensus was arrived at and nobody gave any reason.

“So to begin to say that qualities like character and integrity were looked at is indirectly saying that one person was lacking in those qualities. And I think that in a situation like this, those were some comments that were totally unnecessary. And I will ask the publicity secretary to publicly apologize not just to me but also to Rivers people.”

Abe also expressed fears of his supporters being victimised in the party, adding that he had no structure and that nobody should be made a target in the emerging political scenario.

He warned that there would be reactions if anybody was victimised on account of relationship to him, adding that all that were agreed before the issue of consensus was reached should be respected or there would not be unity in the APC.

“If there is anything like that (victimisation), there will be a reaction, because we are politicians and should always come together; if we must succeed everything we have agreed before the consensus issue should be respected for unity to thrive; if those things are not respected, there will be no unity,” he warned.

On his next political move, Abe said, “From the onset, I said, I will consult my people and associates and I have been consulting and I will continue to consult. This meeting and what the people of my senatorial district have said (that I should pick the senatorial form) is also an important part of that consultation.

“I have digested it and will add it to others I have heard. But the most important thing I want to say here is that, I, Magnus Ngei Abe, Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing the Rivers South-east senatorial district, is a member of the APC, and I remain a member of the party and call on everybody in this state, in this country who is my friend, associate, admirer, or who had sympathy for the APC to please remain a member of the party.

“What we are doing is politics, politics is a game, and it has its values; sometimes, the rules and the way it happened will not be clear to you. But anybody who knows me, know that at the foundation of everything I do is the fear of God. I said from the beginning that whoever God has said will be the governor of Rivers State will be the governor of Rivers State and there is nothing any of us can do about it.

“I do not want anybody to on account of anything that has happened within the party, leave the party or encourage people who had sympathy for our party to look elsewhere.”

He expressed confidence that the APC would win Rivers State in the 2015 elections, adding that he had always had a good relationship with Peterside.

“One thing I would want to assure everybody is that APC will win Rivers State. Hon. Dakuku Peterside is my friend. He has been my friend and he has always been my supporter. When I ran for the Senate in 2003 and this same thing happened, I called some people together; Dakuku was one of those I called and he stood by me,” he said.

He, however, warned that the feelings of Ogoni people should be respected, warning that the people should not be made the object of campaigns.

“I will also want to point out that, there is need for the party to respect the feelings of the people in this area so that we can produce result… I can decide to prove that the Ogoni people are not happy and, I can prove it; people’s sensibility should be respected. We are from this senatorial district and we will deliver it; but we should be given time to work on certain things,” he said

Former Vice-President and the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, on Tuesday revealed he had the political clout in 2003 to defeat his former boss, Chief Olusegun, Obasanjo if he had contested the 2003 presidential elections while also stating that any of the four APC candidates that emerged could easily topple President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 polls.

Atiku, who was in Jos, Plateau State, to woo delegates for the forthcoming presidential primaries of the party, also said he was the only strong politician who fought Obasanjo in 2007 against of third term, a development that eventually brought stability in the polity of the country.
He said Nigeria needs a change, and that if he fails to get the APC presidential ticket, he was prepared to support whoever gets the ticket so that the APC could topple President Goodluck Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to achieve the necessary change.

Atiku also said he has better qualities to be elected the president of Nigeria in 2015 than any other aspirant contesting for the position.

He said: “I have been the vice-president of Nigeria for good eight years and nobody has broken my record till date. Nobody fought the military in this country for democracy like me, my mentor, the late General Shehu Yar’Adua lost his life in the course of this struggle, and I repeat, nobody fought for democracy like me, and for that reason, I am the most experienced politician among those contesting for presidency.”

He promised to tackle the security challenges Nigeria is facing by empowering the military with the required gadgets and create room for more recruitments of security personnel to curtail the insurgency in the country.

He also promised to re-organise the armed forces through adequate training and funding.

“Once I am elected the president of this great country, I shall increase the numerical strength of the military, and will also equip them with modern and sophisticated weapons.

“I shall as well increase their pay and ensure they are given adequate training that will make them contain any form of attack from insurgents’,’ he promised.

While urging the delegates and all party members to work for the overall success of the party and ensure that the desired change of government at all levels is achieved for the overall good of Nigeria, Atiku said all the APC presidential aspirants have resolved within themselves to support whoever emerges as the winner during the Benin primaries to take over from the bad leadership of the PDP come 2015.

Atiku further said he wanted to become Nigerian president not for his selfish interest, but that he was determined at enthroning rule of law, internal democracy and progress in the country.

Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the APC in Plateau State, Hon. Latep Dabang, said that all the state delegates will massively vote for Atiku because of his financial support for the party, assuring that no Plateau State delegate would vote for anyone else.

Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and a leading presidential aspirant on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has promised to end insurgency if elected president of the country in 2015.

Abubakar said this on Tuesday in Jos while addressing newsmen on the political situation in the country.
The presidential aspirant was in Jos to woo delegates for the forthcoming presidential primaries of the party.

He promised to re-organise the armed forces through adequate training and funding.

‘’Once I am elected the president of this great country, I shall increase the numerical strength of the military, and will also equip them with modern and sophisticated weapons.

‘’I shall as well increase their pay and ensure they are given adequate training that will make them contain any form of attack from insurgents’’ he promised.
