Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said the agitator may lose his life in detention. Ejimakor said Kanu’s heart is failing him, and he is having severe breathing problem. The counsel lamented that the IPOB leader has not received adequate medical attention in custody of the Department of State Services, DSS. Abia 2023: Ikpeazu's Deputy CoS, Don Ubani Visits Alex Otti, In Secret Meeting

The Deputy Chief of Staff to Abia State Government, Mr. Don Ubani, has secretly met a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Dr. Alex Otti, amid rumours of the latter's interest to contest the Abia 2023 Governorship election, we can authoritatively report.

Ubani, who has been pushing for power to be retained in Old Aba zone, arrived Otti's residence at exactly 9:47pm Friday night in a Prado jeep dressed in white attire and immediately proceeded into a private discussion with his host. The visit comes days after the deputy governor's aide accused Governor Ikpeazu of scheming to trade the Old Aba interest for the party's senatorial ticket in 2023.

Otti contested the 2015 Governorship election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) but lost to the incumbent Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu before decamping to the opposition APC only recently. Ubani's visit, it was gathered, is to convince the Abia North politician to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2023 Governorship election, having failed to get the governor to support his(Ubani) agenda on the 'Old Aba interest.'

The incumbent Governor Ikpeazu is from Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia South senatorial zone. He succeeded Theodore Orji from Abia Central. The state was first ruled by former Governor Orji Kalu who is from Abia North upon return to democracy in 1999. Going by the 'Abia Charter of Equity', it is believed that power should naturally shift to Abia North having rotated among the three senatorial districts in the state.

Like in Anambra state, where the next round of power rotation is starting from Anambra South, which produced the first elected governor in 1999, with the election of former Central Bank Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, Abia North is looking forward to producing next governor. The zone believes for fairness and equity, it should produce the next governor.

Otti, a former Managing Director of Diamond Bank, is from Abia North senatorial district. Although he lays claim to both Old Aba and Old Bende origin, this Newspaper understands that Ubani finds the 'double origin' as an 'added advantage' and may have informed the ex-Commissioner to convince the former banker to return to PDP and run for Governor, having failed to have Governor Ikpeazu to openly declare support for the Old Aba interest.

“In either ways, if Otti wins governorship, for Ubani, it is a win-win for both the Old Aba(Ubani is rooting for to retain power) and Old Bende and a bigger win for Abia North”, a source privy to the discussions at Otti's residence told this Newspaper, adding, “Ubani believes it is time for Old Aba to complete its 16 years in the spirit of equity and fairness.”

The source also revealed that Ubani requested for mobilisation from his host to carryout extensive lobbying within the PDP ahead of the planned defection. He subsequently informed Otti that he has been reaching out to Abia North political heavyweights within the party to convince stakeholders and power brokers that it is their(Old Aba) turn to produce the next governor.

“Our demand is based on equity and fairness. We will not allow an arrangement where an Ngwa man will handover power to Old Bende. Doing so is insensitive to the feelings and rights of the Old Aba people. We Igbo cannot be saying it is our turn to produce Nigeria’s president and some Igbo would want to marginalise their own brother back home. It is contradictory. We will resist it,” Ubani was quoted as saying.

The Deputy Chief of Staff reportedly boasted that, over his dead body would Governor Ikpeazu succeed in his alleged plot to jettison the 'Abia Charter of Equity' and handover power to a non Old Aba successor in exchange for the party's senatorial ticket in 2023.

The former Commissioner for Information and Strategy had accused Governor Ikpeazu of being deceitful and playing to the whims and caprices of a 'powerful cabal' bent on dictating the political future of the state over his failure to openly declare support for the Old Aba interest.

“If Governor Ikpeazu is interested in going to the Senate in 2023, we won't stop him. But he should support, in words and deed, and quietly handover the reins of power to a successor of the Old Aba bloc for the sake of equality and political justice, it is not about shouting fairness and political justice in Nigeria, charity should begin at home.”

Mr. Ubani declared that the Ukwa la Ngwa people will not forgive Governor Okezie Ikpeazu should he perfect his 'marginalisation plot' and betray the Old Aba political interest in the 2023 governorship race and support the Old Bende bloc against the former.

Meanwhile, a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state has called on members of the party to caution Mr Ubani and call the deputy governor's aide to order immediately over his moves which he said is capable of leading the party to implosion ahead of the 2023 Governorship race.

A Northern socio-political group, the Arewa Integrity Forum (AIF) has described as an afterthought, the withdrawal of a statement on insecurity in the Southeast credited to a former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice in Abia state, Umeh Kalu, SAN.

Kalu had fingered the Nigerian army of being behind the killings in the region, accusing the military of planting Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) across the Southeast and blaming members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the group’s armed militia, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), for it.
Specifically, the former Attorney-General had accused the Military of recently masterminding the planting of IEDs in Imo state and then framing IPOB members and ESN just to nail and paint IPOB Leader, Maazi Nnamdi Kanu black. He had subsequently denied the statement following the negative comments that greeted it in the media.

But reacting to the development in a statement on Tuesday, AIF Coordinator, Suleiman Musa Mohammed lambasted Umeh Kalu, describing him as a coward, while calling on the Department of State Services, DSS, and other security agencies to invite the former Commissioner for questioning over his comments on security.

He said: “We have seen a recent statement credited to a former Attorney-General in Abia state, Umeh Kalu, concerning insecurity in the Southeast. We at AIF believe that Kalu knows more than we all already know as Nigerians about the security situation in the country and call on security agencies to investigate the former Commissioner for Justice.

“We are greatly disturbed by the reckless utterances of Kalu, a man with such a ranking position of SAN, and consider his sudden u-turn as an afterthought. Our forum see Kalu as an enemy of the state who is out to truncate the peace already being enjoyed by people of the Southeast. The Military must never allow this to happen.
“We, therefore, call on the Department of State Services (DSS), Army, Police not to allow this slide but to immediately invite Umeh Kalu for questioning and to shed more light on his recent comments bothering on security in the Southeast. This is our position at AIF,” Mohammed added.

The group called on Nigerians to join hands with the Military in defending the nation, warning that any further aspersions on the Army by any person, no matter how highly placed including Umeh Kalu, would be resisted by the AIF.

“In spite of what is happening across the country, our belief and hope is that Nigeria will pull through and even become stronger and more prosperous. That is why we enjoin all to continue to pray for the country and join the military in its efforts to fight insecurity in the country.

“The country is passing through a phase that will soon be over and propel us into a future that we all will be proud of as Nigerians. This is our fervent hope and prayers and we must therefore shun divisive statements and actions as Nigerians,” the statement added.

Kalu was reacting to a statement issued on Monday by the Nigerian army claiming that troops on a special exercise have thwarted an attempt by members of the IPOB and ESN to unleash mayhem on residents of Mgbidi and Awo Mmamma communities in Orlu LGA of Imo State.

The military claimed a swift response by the troops compelled the attackers mounted on two sienna buses and a Toyota Hilux truck to abandon their mission and withdrew in disarray, adding that four Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by the group along Orlu-Owerri road have been uncovered.

But Umeh Kalu accused the Army of masterminding planting of IEDs across the Southeast region and framing innocent members of the IPOB and ESN for it just to nail Maazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB.

He spoke on Tuesday at his residence while playing host to visitors amongst who were members of his School’s Old Boys Association, friends and political associates from Abia state who were on a private visit to his home.

Kalu said: “Can the military go ahead and provide number of arrests made following the supposed busting of the ghost attackers? How come no single arrest was said to have been made by the all-powerful Nigerian army?

“This is simply a comic relief from the Army and nothing more. Where are the two Sienna buses and Toyota Hilux truck the military claimed the attackers came in? None was retrieved by the troops from the attackers? What a comedy!

“The Military simply planted IEDs themselves, went ahead to retrieve the IEDs that have no life in it claiming to have successfully diffused it just to appear to be working and appease their pay-masters.”

The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice warned the military to stop attacking the good people of Southeast and framing innocent members of IPOB and ESN for it, insisting that IPOB was made up of a peace-loving people.

“We have been raising alarms over the illegal activities of the Nigerian army in Southeast of recent and nothing has been done or said by the leaders and governors of Southeast. Innocent lives have been wasted all in the name of exercise Golden Dawn.”

He said if such continues, he will be forced to let the world know how the Military has been going about supervising coordinated attacks and killings in Southeast in collaboration with sister agencies and blaming IPOB for it.

“Enough is enough, the Nigerian military should stop this show of shame and stop stooping so low all in a bid to show force where there is none. They are more needed in the terrorists ravaged Northeast region and not Southeast where there are no cases of terrorists or bandits,” Kalu chided the Army.
