Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Never Denied Being A Member Of Ipob-lawyer by Izumarock70(m): 11:24am On Jan 20, 2022 |
ONYENDU MAZI NNAMDI KANU NEVER DENIED BEING THE LEADER OF IPOB - LET THE RECORDS BE SET STRAIGHT: Greetings UmuChineke, Our attention has been drawn to the deliberate misrepresentation/falsehood and wrong narratives being perpetuated by some mischief makers, and which is unfortunately gradually gaining prominence on social media platforms and print media. Hence, it is pertinent that we provide clarification and clear the doubt. S.M. Labaran Esq., who stood in yesterday for the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation is a colleague I hold in high esteem, but I shall resist every mischievous ploy being adopted to misinform the unsuspecting members of the public who were not privy to the details of the proceedings in court yesterday, with a wrong and mischievous interpretation of the purport of the Plea taken by our indefatigable Client - Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. For the records, Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu never denied being the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) while taking his plea, but only STOUTLY DENIED THE FACT THAT IPOB IS A TERRORIST ORGANISATION AND THAT BEING ITS LEADER IS AN OFFENCE, which position is well informed. Members of the Public should be well guided that the status of the black market order proscribing IPOB is a subject of Appeal in Appeal Number: APPEAL NO. CA/A/214/2018, pending before the Court of Appeal, Abuja Division. That being said, it is only laughable that the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) in their desperate but futile attempt to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it, brought a charge bordering on the status of IPOB, a subject matter of a competent Appeal, where issues has been joined with the same FGN. Therefore, be properly guided UmuChineke, because we have sufficiently addressed the emptiness of that count and entire charge in our compelling Submissions before the Court, now adjourned to be heard on the 16th day of February, 2022. We do not wish to dwell further on this subject, but be rightly informed that Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu never denied being the Leader of IPOB while taking his Plea yesterday. Ndewonu UmuChineke Signed: Ifeanyi Ejiofor, Esq. IPOB Lead Counsel 20th January, 2022

Politics / The Nigerian Separatist Movement Being Powered From A Suburban London Home by Izumarock70(m): 7:18am On Sep 26, 2021 |
(CNN) - Tucked away down a quiet, leafy street in Peckham, southeast London, is the registered address of a movement seeking to break Nigeria apart. This suburban spot is the unlikely location for Radio Biafra, a network of internet-based amateur radio stations broadcasting a separatist agenda back to listeners in Nigeria. Radio Biafra is operated by Nnamdi Kanu, a British citizen leading the calls to revive the former Republic of Biafra through an organization he founded called the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The group was banned by the Nigerian government in 2017 and Kanu has been arrested several times on charges of treason and instigating violence. He was first arrested in October 2015 for treasonable felony, among other charges. He was released on bail in 2017 and fled to the UK. Before his most recent arrest in Kenya in June, Kanu's supporters used the Peckham house for Radio Biafra broadcasts, according to Darlington Imoh, who answered the door when CNN visited in August. He describes himself as the "officer of output for the Biafran campaign." The International Crisis Group, an organization working to prevent war, described Radio Biafra in 2015 as "an unlicensed station urging violent struggle to achieve independence for Biafra" with broadcasts that are "highly provocative messages laced with misinformation, hate speech, and anti-Nigeria derision." Imoh says all IPOB is calling for is the right to self-determination. He compares it to the devolution votes held in Scotland and Wales in 1997, and more recently, Brexit. "We want a referendum, which is a civilized thing to ask for, just like Britain had with Europe," he says. But analysts say that is very unlikely to happen. "The Nigerian government will be afraid to allow a referendum to happen. And the fact that it will be afraid to allow a referendum to happen shows just how deep the problem is," says Remi Adekoya, a political analyst and associate lecturer at the University of York in the UK. A bloody civil war A movement for Biafran independence from Nigeria in the 1960s led to a bloody civil war. In 1966, a coup by army officers mostly from the Igbo tribe toppled the Nigerian government. Six months later there was another coup, and riots in the mostly Hausa north left thousands of Igbo dead. About a million Igbo, mostly Christian, fled to the country's southeast district, which unilaterally seceded from Nigeria in 1967 and declared itself Biafra. The government declared war and more than one million people are estimated to have died in the fighting or of starvation as a result of the conflict. The war ended in 1970 after Biafran soldiers surrendered and were reintegrated back into Nigeria under its "no victor, no vanquished," policy. Now, the agitation for separation is back again and it's not only the IPOB calling for independence from Nigeria. Another group, led by Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, is calling for the southwest of the country -- largely populated with the Yoruba tribe -- to break away. Igboho fled the country in July after a raid by security forces on his home. He was detained in the neighboring country of Benin and is awaiting a hearing for extradition to Nigeria. A failed Nigerian project? What is driving these calls to break apart Africa's most populous nation? Political experts say Kanu, Igboho and others like them are filling a vacuum left by multiple failures of government. "The increasing popularity of these calls is a direct consequence of the failures of the Nigerian state, or, more broadly speaking, even of the Nigerian project," said Adekoya, the University of York associate professor. "Nigeria is not working for the vast majority of its inhabitants, and the separatists harp on this very strongly," Adekoya said. "That's the reason why this is chiming with a lot of people." Alongside the threats posed by terrorism and insecurity, Nigeria faces widescale poverty with one of the largest numbers of people living in extreme poverty. Nigeria also has a mass unemployment problem -- government figures cited by Bloomberg show that 33% of the population was out of work as of January of this year. With more than 10 million children out of school, Nigeria has one of the world's highest proportions of children not attending school -- a problem exacerbated by rising numbers of school abductions in Nigeria's northwest, according to UNICEF. And Adekoya says the country's endemic corruption only adds to the frustration felt by ordinary Nigerians: "There's huge corruption in the country ... in 60 years of independence, the Nigerian state has not been able to figure out how to provide basic services like steady electricity to its citizenry." President Muhammadu Buhari was one of the soldiers who fought on the Nigerian side during the Biafran war and is resolute about keeping the country united. The former military general has wasted no time in cracking down on the agitations for independence and a Department of State Services spokesperson told CNN in a statement that "Nigeria is indissoluble and indivisible," adding that they will continue with their methods of "detection and prevention of crimes against the internal security of Nigeria." Kanu has been able to tap into a long-standing resentment and marginalization felt by Nigeria's Igbo tribe, particularly in the aftermath of the Biafran war. There have been protests and marches in support of Kanu and his most recent arrest has sparked even more outrage from his supporters, who say he was kidnapped and renditioned from Kenya and returned to Nigeria, where he is in detention awaiting a court hearing. His lawyer Aloy Ejimakor told CNN that he has filed a suit against the Nigerian security forces and government, seeking damages against what he calls Kanu's unlawful detention. In response, an aide to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, told CNN: "The right to institute a judicial action is constitutionally guaranteed one and right to fair hearing of a respondent is equally tolerated constitutionally. The right to determination of the dispute as presented by the contending parties is the exclusive responsibility of the judiciary." The British government says it is monitoring the situation and that it has asked Nigeria to explain the circumstances leading to Kanu's detention. Twitter spats and crackdowns In addition to his radio network, which his lawyers say also operates in Dubai and New York, Kanu's sometimes divisive rhetoric and propaganda is often disseminated via social media platforms including Twitter. Buhari banned Twitter in Nigeria earlier this year, days after the platform deleted a tweet from the President in which he had warned separatists: "Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand." Buhari's move won praise from former US President Donald Trump but sparked widespread criticism from freedom of speech campaigners. Nigeria's government accused Twitter of double standards for deleting Buhari's tweet but failing to rein in Kanu's inflammatory messages on the platform, although one of his own tweets was also deleted. At the time, citizens were threatened with prosecution for tweeting, but most Nigerians largely ignored the ban and have been using the platform with abandon through virtual private networks that mask their location. The Nigerian government says the ban is likely to be lifted soon, following talks with Twitter. To keep its message alive, IPOB regularly issues stay-at-home orders, which it calls "days of civil disobedience throughout Biafraland," in a press release. The streets in places such as Imo State, Abia, and other parts of the southeast are frequently shown on local media to be deserted, with accusations that IPOB forcefully enforces these orders. An attorney for the group denies the action is enforced. But Adekoya acknowledges that Buhari faces an uphill battle on the issue of separatism. "You can sit back and let the separatists gain in popularity -- which of course threatens the existence of the Nigerian state -- or you can crack down on them," Adekoya said. Faced with this dilemma, Nigeria appears to be at an impasse, and Adekoya said the country's future looks grim ahead of pivotal presidential elections planned for 2023. "The worst-case scenario ... is the country essentially disintegrates, perhaps not into a full-blown civil war, but into a lot of violence," he said. Nigeria is betting on stifling the voices of leaders such as Kanu to quash any attempts to break away. However, Imoh, the Peckham-based IPOB supporter, told CNN the Biafran independence movement would not die -- even if Kanu is not around -- because "if you kill one general, another general takes his place." https://edition.cnn.com/2021/09/25/africa/nigeria-separatists-biafra-cmd-intl/index.html https://lm.?u=https%3A%2F%2Fcnn.it%2F2XP4l0p&h=AT1DI0o0Y3G45zHZ5GHrx7fT8Op9WJacW2FVhoojPmcrCMnf4timYDgUA8-hS_REh03aXMWd_QlMdP3HVT3agNHpH54T4UdswVNkmiTAyX3d9nK6uQ7rU8jfbTx2OJYMPPxL

Politics / BBC: A Shame To Professional Journalism by Izumarock70(m): 5:03pm On Sep 15, 2021 |
BBC: A Shame To Professional Journalism It is a big disgrace for an international mainstream media organization in the capacity of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), to be dishing out fake and fictitious information to the people. It was really disgusting that on Thursday 9th September 2021, when this media outlet published fake pictures to hoodwink the people that Biafrans welcomed President Muhammadu Buhari to Imo State on a working visit, as planned by the Supreme Court administrator of the State, Mr. Hope Uzodimma. It will interest you to know that the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), declared a Sit-At-Home, in the whole of Biafraland to tell the whole world that they do not want to welcome President Muhammadu Buhari. The Sit-At-Home Order was obeyed to the letter, throughout Biafraland. The streets and roads were completely deserted. And in order to fulfill their satanic agenda, BBC shamelessly downloaded old pictures of End Sars crowd protest and got them published as crowd that welcomed Buhari. This was done to confuse the people that the President was given a mammoth reception. A brilliant Biafran journalist however, spottedly exposed this which made them to hurriedly pull them down. What a shame! Ethical journalism strives to ensure free and sound exchange of information that is accurate, fair and thorough, but BBC is not after all these. The organization is only hell-bent on giving its audience, fake, concocted and distorted information. According to Bob Woodward, "there are several key ethical standards that appear across global news organizations that every journalist must know and work with. At the highest level, they call on journalists to seek the truth, act in the public interest and minimize harm". But BBC is not after giving people good and right information. Ethical journalism is the bed rock of every news organization but most unfortunately, a giant news media organization like the BBC, lacks all of these. Among the key ethics of journalism is Honesty. Journalists have an obligation to seek out the truth and report it as accurately as possible. This requires due diligence which means, making every effort to seek out all the facts relevant to a story. Journalists should also corroborate any information with multiple sources, but from what BBC did, we can see that it does not care about reporting the truth. The second is Independence* Journalists should avoid taking political sides and not act on behalf of special interest groups. Any political affiliations or financial investments that might constitute conflict of interests with the subject they are writing about, should be declared to editors and readers. Some organizations characterize this principle as “objectivity,” while others, especially non-profit civic journalism projects, reject this term, as they position themselves explicitly on the side of public interest. Third, is fairness* In addition to being independent, journalists must show impartiality and balance in their reportage. Most news stories have more than one side. Journalists should capture all sides to a story. Two different perspectives on equal footing where one is unsupported by evidence, should not be presented to the public. The exception to the impartiality rule is opinion writing, as well as “gonzo” journalism and creative non-fiction. Fourth is public accountability* News organizations should listen to their audience. To enable the public to hold them accountable, journalists should write under their own ethical bylaws and accept responsibility for their words. When news outlets publish factual errors, they need to issue a correction. BBC lack accountability and so, should not be a News Media House. The fifth ethic is harm minimization* Not every publishable fact should be made public. If the amount of harm that could come to individuals, particularly children, as a result of disclosures which exceed the public good that would come out of such, the news outlets might choose not to publish the story. This is less of a consideration when it comes to public figures. It is huge however, in matters of national security, where lives could be on the line. The sixth is avoidance of libel* This is legal as well as moral, for journalists. Journalists cannot print false statements that damage people's reputation. In most jurisdictions, true statements cannot be libellous, so journalists can protect themselves by rigorously checking out the facts. BBC is known for its libellous news and misinformation. Lastly, another factor that must be imbibed in ethical reportage is proper attribution. Journalists must never plagiarize. If they use information from another media outlet or journalist, they must attribute the information to the rightful source. The above mentioned qualities are what BBC lacks. Any media house that lacks any of these qualities should not have existed in the first place. The world should know that the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), is not worth the onions and should be avoided. Fake journalism is equal to terrorism. BBC is better known as a media-terrorist organization rather than a news organization. It has totally lost its integrity before the well informed.
