‎General Koko Essien Gives Back to Community, Renovates 90-Year-Old Primary School

‎The Honourable Commissioner for Internal Security and Waterways, General Koko Essien (Rtd.), has given back to his community by renovating the historic AME Zion Primary School, Ndon Ebom in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
‎
‎General Essien on Friday, September 18, 2026, formally handed over the renovated two-block, 12-classroom facility to the school, which was established in 1936 by missionaries of the AME Zion Church.
‎
‎The intervention has transformed the school from its previously deteriorating condition into a more conducive learning environment for pupils and teachers.
‎
‎Commissioning the facility on behalf of Governor Umo Eno, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ubong Essien, commended General Koko Essien for identifying a critical need in his community and taking personal responsibility for addressing it.
‎
‎Governor Eno, through the Commissioner, called on other well-to-do individuals across the state to emulate the gesture by returning to their communities, identifying pressing needs and using their resources to complement government’s development efforts.
‎
‎He described the renovation as a worthy contribution to education and community development, noting that such interventions support the objectives of the administration’s ARISE Agenda.
‎
‎Speaking at the ceremony, General Koko Essien said the renovation was his personal contribution to the development of his community and an expression of his support for the Governor’s ARISE Agenda.
‎
‎An alumnus of the school, the Commissioner expressed gratitude to Governor Eno for giving him the opportunity to serve in his administration. He also urged the pupils to take their studies seriously while calling on the school authorities and community members to protect and properly maintain the renovated facility.
‎
‎General Essien further disclosed that he had previously provided a transformer to the community and expressed satisfaction that the facility was being put to good use.
‎
‎The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Lucy Edet, appreciated the Commissioner for the intervention and pledged that the facility would be properly utilised for the benefit of both pupils and teachers.
‎
‎The Village Head of Ndon Ebom, His Highness Chief Augustine Effiong, commended General Essien for remembering his roots and responding to the needs of his community. He also thanked Governor Eno for finding the Commissioner worthy of serving in his cabinet and assured that the community had taken ownership of the project and would protect the facility.

‎Also speaking, the Dean of Commissioners and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mkpisong Frank Archibong, described the gesture as a demonstration of commitment to the ideals of the Eno administration.

‎He announced that the College of Commissioners would provide a solar-powered borehole for the school to complement the renovation.
‎
‎The Chairman of Uruan Local Government Area, Surv. Iniobong Ekpenyong, and the member representing Uruan State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Dr. Itoro Etim, also commended General Essien for transforming the school and providing pupils with a more conducive environment for learning.

‎The event was attended by members of the State Executive Council, political leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.

The Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Akwa Ibom State, Hon. Blessing Umo, has dismissed as spurious, false and misleading a purported report claiming that Mr. Jeremiah Udoh Akpan has secured an “inter-party endorsement” for the 2027 governorship election.

Reacting to the newspaper publication, Hon. Umo described the claim as “fake propaganda taken too far,” stressing that there is no such endorsement by IPAC or any recognised inter-party platform in the state.

According to her, the purported endorsement exists only in the imagination of the candidate and those promoting his political ambition.

“My attention has been drawn to the front page story of THE EYES PORTAL newspaper, Vol.7 No.270 of Tuesday, Sept 1, 2026 - Monday, Sept 7, 2026, with the headline “2027 guber: DLA, Jeremiah Udoh Akpan gets Inter-Party endorsements."

“I wish to state categorically and unequivocally that the said publication is FALSE, SPURIOUS, MISLEADING AND A FAKE PROPAGANDA TAKEN TOO FAR. There is no such endorsement by IPAC, and nobody should be deceived by this piece of propaganda being circulated as news. It exists only in the mind of the candidate and his promoters.”

Hon. UMO urged members of the public, political parties and the media to disregard the publication, saying IPAC would not lend its name or institutional credibility to an endorsement that was neither discussed nor authorised by the council.

She warned politicians against deliberately manufacturing endorsements and presenting them as decisions of recognised political bodies, describing such tactics as desperate attempts to create a false impression of political acceptance ahead of the 2027 elections.

She maintained that any genuine decision or position involving IPAC would be properly communicated through the appropriate channels and not manufactured through newspaper propaganda.

‎Indigenes of Ini have endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Bassey Eno PhD, and the Member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Ukpong-udo (PhD) for another term in office.

‎The endorsement, announced at a stakeholders’ gathering in Ini Local Government Area, was presented as a collective decision of elders, women, and youths, in recognition of what they described as impactful leadership and consistent service delivery.

‎Setting the tone for the event, Barr. Edet Inyangidim stated that the endorsement of Ukpong-udo was driven not by personal interest, but by the desire to sustain ongoing development in the constituency. He described the gesture as a “thank you” to the lawmaker for his performance and urged him to continue what he termed his “good work.”

‎Udoh cited the distribution of business grants, over 150 motorcycles, employment opportunities, infrastructures and more than 35 vehicles to constituents as evidence of Ukpong-Udo’s performance. ‎Akwa Ibom City Boy Movement Begins Massive Mobilisation for Tinubu, Akpabio, Eno

‎The frontline political group, City Boy Movement, Akwa Ibom Chapter, has commenced a statewide mobilisation campaign in support of President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Governor Umo Eno ahead of their re-election bids.
‎
‎The move comes weeks after a statewide rally in Uyo, where supporters gathered to demonstrate solidarity with the three Leaders.
‎
‎Speaking on the development, the State Coordinator, Engr. Iboro Johnny, FNSE, said the mobilisation exercise is aimed at reaching rural communities across the state and will be carried out on a unit-by-unit basis across all 329 wards in Akwa Ibom.
‎
‎Iboro explained that the campaign will feature awareness programmes and engagement sessions designed to highlight the achievements of the three leaders in their respective offices.
‎
‎He added that the movement is focused on ensuring that eligible voters are adequately informed and actively engaged ahead of the 2027 elections.

‎NAGGMDP Donates Medical Consumables to Support Health Sector Reform in Akwa Ibom

‎The National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) has donated medical consumables to the Akwa Ibom State Government through the Ministry of Health as part of its contribution to the ongoing reform in the state’s health sector.
‎
‎The items were presented on Friday by the State Chairman of the association, Dr. Edikan Ackley, alongside members of the union, to the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, at his office.
‎
‎Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Ackley said the gesture was the association’s way of giving back to the government in appreciation of the improvements being witnessed in the health sector. He noted that there is increasing evidence of positive changes in the system, including improved morale among health workers and a growing health-seeking behaviour among residents.
‎
‎According to him, the association plans to embark on a quarterly hospital outreach to support healthcare facilities across the state. He disclosed that the body intends to visit about 12 hospitals before the end of the year, beginning with the first quarter target of supplying at least 200 hospital bed sheets and other essential consumables.
‎
‎Dr. Ackley added that the materials earmarked for distribution include bed sheets, about 1,000 litres of surgical spirit, surgical and disposable gloves, ward coats and other medical consumables, which will first be delivered to the state’s reference hospitals in Uyo, Oron and Ikot Ekpene.
‎
‎Responding, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, commended the association for the initiative, describing it as a thoughtful move to support government efforts in strengthening the health sector. He noted that the Ackley-led NAGGMDP leadership was the first professional body to formally support the state government through such a gesture.
‎
‎Dr. Ekem also highlighted several achievements recorded under the ongoing health sector reform championed by Governor Umo Eno and encouraged members of the association to remain committed to their professional responsibilities and continued service to humanity.

‎Ekpo Masquerade: How Barr. Ekom Nwoko Rescued Tradition in Court

‎The atmosphere inside the premises of Magistrate Court 1, Fulga Road, off Ikot Ekpene Road, Uyo, was unusually tense on Wednesday as people gathered in large numbers to witness an unprecedented case, the arraignment of an Ekpo masquerade, a figure traditionally revered but now standing trial for alleged misconduct.
‎
‎According to the motion for remand brought under Section 292 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Akwa Ibom State, 2022, the Ekpo was arrested and charged with terrorism and disturbance of public peace, a development that sparked shock and debate. Seated in the dock in full masquerade attire, the defendant became the center of attention as murmurs filled the courtroom.
‎
‎While many expected the matter to be straightforward, the proceedings took a dramatic turn when Barrister Ekom Nwoko, known for his firm grasp of the law, rose from the Bar. Nwoko, who had come to court for a different matter, announced his decision to represent the defendant pro bono.
‎
‎His intervention immediately changed the tone of the trial. In a calm but firm submission, Barr. Nwoko urged the court to consider the cultural context surrounding Ekpo masquerades, arguing that the allegations did not meet the legal threshold required to remand the defendant in a correctional facility. He stressed the need to distinguish cultural practices from criminal intent.

‎Barr. Nwoko referred the court to Section 293 (2) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Akwa Ibom State, 2022, urging the court to determine whether there was any probable cause to remand the defendant. He further requested that the court invoke Section 294 of the same law to grant bail, noting the lack of evidence supporting the allegations.

‎He also asked the court to thoroughly examine the affidavit filed by the prosecution, which, according to him, disclosed no reasonable or probable cause to justify remanding the defendant, especially since the alleged offence did not amount to terrorism.
‎
‎After considering his arguments, the Chief Magistrate granted bail to the Ekpo masquerade, a ruling that brought visible relief to those present.
‎
‎In a key directive, the Police Prosecutor was ordered to file a formal charge against the defendant, as the motion for remand was deemed inappropriate for the alleged offence.
‎
‎However, the matter is far from over. The case has been adjourned to December 19, 2025, for further hearing as the court prepares to review the charges.
‎
‎The arrest and ongoing trial have continued to spark discussions, with mixed reactions on where the line between cultural heritage and legal boundaries should be drawn.
‎
‎For now, all eyes remain on the next hearing and on Barrister Nwoko, whose unexpected intervention has become a defining moment in the case.

‎I Was Deputy Speaker at 37, Allow Young People to Lead, Uwem Udoma Tells Abak Elders

‎A former Deputy Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rt. Hon. Uwem Udoma, has urged elders of Abak Local Government Area to allow young people take up leadership roles in the Local Government Area.
‎
‎Udoma made the call on Saturday during the Abak APC Homegoing meeting held at the Council Secretariat. His remarks, delivered as part of a goodwill message, drew loud cheers from party members and stakeholders who gathered for the event.
‎
‎The former lawmaker reminded the audience that he attained a principal office in the State Assembly at a relatively young age because older politicians at the time believed in his competence.
‎
‎“I became Deputy Speaker at 37 because members of the House then saw my potential and trusted me with the responsibility,” Udoma said.
‎
‎He expressed concern over the growing trend of older politicians dominating leadership contests even when qualified young people are available.
‎
‎“It is not encouraging that, when opportunities for leadership arise, we see people in their 60s and 70s struggling for positions despite the presence of vibrant young men and women who can serve effectively.
‎
‎ “We need to give leadership opportunities to the younger generation while we support them with guidance.” he stated.

‎Saturday’s homecoming meeting attracted a large turnout of party faithful, Political Stakeholders, Appointees of Government, Youth Groups, women groups and community leaders.

‎The gathering also reaffirmed its commitment to mobilising strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno ahead of the forthcoming elections.

‎ENOUGH OF THE FALSEHOOD: IBIBIO VANGUARD’S BASELESS ATTACK ON GOVERNOR UMO ENO ON MBOHO PROPERTY IN LAGOS
‎
‎1. The attention of the Ibom Development Association, Lagos has been drawn to a highly inflammatory and misleading statement issued by a group styling itself as Ibibio Vanguard, a publication laden with falsehoods, distortions, and deliberate attempts to malign the person and office of the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno.
‎2. Ordinarily, such an emotional, poorly researched, and politically tainted document would not merit a response. However, because it seeks to misinform our people and weaponize ethnic sentiments, we as one of the conciences of the society consider it necessary to place the facts before the public.
‎
‎3. Following the various unsubstantiated allegations made against Governor Umo Eno, we undertook a thorough independent investigation into the matter concerning Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio's property in Lagos. Our findings clearly reveal that the land in question lacked valid Certificate of Occupancy, had outstanding documentation deficiencies, and fell short of statutory requirements under Lagos State development laws. These issues were known to the affected parties long before the enforcement exercise. It is therefore both dishonest and mischievous for anyone to attribute the regulatory actions of the Lagos State Government to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State.
‎
‎4. Furthermore, the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), in its official letter dated 1st July 2024, explicitly stated that the affected property, including its fence line, was situated within the designated Right of Way for the Lagos Strategic Transport Master Plan Project and it was taken for overriding public interest.
‎The agency also appointed a certified RAP Consultant, Dr. Babalola Osho, to interface with all project-affected persons. Not a single section of LAMATA’s communication indicates any involvement, influence, or approval from the Akwa Ibom State Government or its Governor.
‎
‎5. Contrary to the claims of “silence,” Governor Umo Eno took immediate steps upon receiving a report, seeking clarification and directing proper engagement with the relevant authorities. Leadership is not exercised through media theatrics but through responsible action grounded in verified information. It is, therefore, irresponsible for any group to twist the facts simply to satisfy premeditated political narratives.
‎
‎6. The attempt by Ibibio Vanguard to drag inter-ethnic relations into their divisive rhetoric is particularly dangerous. The Governor’s attendance at any cultural event, whether Ibibio, Igbo, or otherwise, demonstrates his commitment to unity and peaceful coexistence, values that Akwa Ibom people have upheld for generations. To interpret such goodwill gestures as hostility towards his own ethnic group is a clear display of bad faith.
‎
‎7. We strongly caution those behind this reckless publication to desist from heating up the polity with baseless accusations. Matters relating to land administration, documentation, and urban development must be treated with due process, not emotional blackmail or political mischief. The dignity and heritage of the Ibibio nation can not and will not be reduced to a tool for political agitation or personal vendetta.

‎8. The Ibom Development Association, Lagos urges the general public to disregard the misinformation circulated by Ibibio Vanguard. We reaffirm our commitment to truth, unity, and the collective progress of Akwa Ibom people everywhere. We will not stand by and watch our Governor or our ethnic heritage be dragged through the mud for reasons rooted in politics, bitterness, or ignorance.

AKWA IBOM PRIVATE-OWNED MECHANIZED FARM READY FOR HARVEST ON NOVEMBER 11

A privately-owned mechanized farm in Akwa Ibom State, Eti-Farms, has announced plans to begin harvesting and releasing fresh corn into markets across the state on November 11, 2025.

Located at Ndom Ebom, Uruan near the Victor Attah International Airport, Uyo, Eti-Farms covers over 40 hectares of cultivated land and stands as one of the largest privately-run mechanized farms in the state. The farm is owned by Mr. Idongesit Usen, popularly known as Twin Idy, who relocated to Akwa Ibom after 15 years of successful farming in Northern Nigeria.

According to the management, the upcoming corn harvest marks the start of a steady supply period that will run from November 2025 through January 2026, ensuring the availability of fresh corn even during the dry season.

Aside from corn, Eti-Farms also cultivates several other crops including different species of beans; white, brown, honey, and tela alongside vegetables, cassava, yam, cocoyam, cocoa, and palm trees. About two hectares of the farm are dedicated to vegetable production.

The farm operates both wet and dry season farming, a system designed to sustain continuous food production and steady market supply throughout the year.

To mark the start of the harvest, Eti-Farms will host a Mini Corn Party on November 11, 2025 at its Uyo office, No. 26, Wellington Bassey Way, opposite African Church, Uyo.

‎Akwa Ibom Traders Remind Gov Umo Eno of Appointment Promise

‎Traders under the umbrella of the Akwa Ibom Traders Cooperative Association have reminded Governor Umo Eno, PhD, of his promise to appoint three Senior Special Assistants (SSAs) per senatorial district and ten Special Assistants (SAs) per federal constituency across the state.
‎
‎The reminder was contained in a communiqué issued at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held recently at the Governor’s Annex, Uyo. ‎The communiqué, signed by leaders and stakeholders of the association, commended the governor for his continuous support to traders in the state, particularly through the Traders Support Grants and other empowerment initiatives that have benefited more than 4,000 members.

‎According to the traders, these interventions have put food on thousands of tables, created wealth, reduced poverty, and expanded the frontiers of commerce in Akwa Ibom State.

‎The communiqué further noted that, in recognition of Governor Eno’s developmental strides and inclusive leadership style, the traders unanimously passed a Vote of Confidence on him, adopted him as their sole candidate for the 2027 Governorship Election, resolved to purchase his nomination form with 100 million naira and pledged to mobilize at least one million votes across the 31 local government areas of the state to ensure his re-election for a second term.

‎According to the communiqué, this decision represents a collective commitment to sustain the progress already witnessed in the state under his administration.

‎At the national level, the association expressed full support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCFR, pledging to mobilize members, particularly in the Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District, to support their re-election bids in 2027.

Why I Resigned My Appointment as Aide to Governor Umo Eno – Ndiana-Abasi Udom

Chairman of the Governing Council, Sure Foundation College of Nursing Sciences, Ukanafun, Mr. Ndiana-Abasi Udom, popularly known as Nana Udom, has explained the reasons behind his resignation as an aide to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno.

Mr. Udom clarified that his decision to step down from the position was purely personal and had no political undertones, refuting reports linking him to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Speaking in Ukanafun, he said his name was wrongly included in a list allegedly featuring members of the newly formed PDP caretaker committee in Akwa Ibom State.

“My resignation from government appointment had nothing to do with the PDP caretaker committee. I believe my name was included because I’ve been quiet politically for a while,” he explained per Emma Akpabio.

Udom stated that his withdrawal from political activities was to focus fully on the development of the Sure Foundation College of Nursing Sciences, Ukanafun, a private institution dedicated to training nurses and midwives to meet the growing manpower needs in Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria at large.

He revealed that the college would begin full academic activities on October 27, 2025, after securing the final approval of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN).

Reaffirming his loyalty to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Udom said:

“I am a fully registered member of the APC in my ward with registration number 174210, listed as number 5 on the party register. I have never attended any PDP meeting, publicly or privately, since joining the APC and pledging my support for the present administration.”

He further distanced himself from any PDP activities, stressing:

“I publicly dissociate myself from the PDP and all matters related to its caretaker committee.”

Addressing rumours about his political allegiance, Nana Udom reaffirmed his unwavering support for Governor Umo Eno, describing himself as one of the governor’s most loyal supporters during the 2023 elections.

“A lot has been said, but I leave the rumour peddlers to God. In Ukanafun, you cannot mention ten loyal supporters of the Governor during the 2023 elections without naming Nana Udom. I was there then, I’m still here, and I will remain here until he completes his second term and beyond. I am not a man of double stance,” he stated.

Akwa Ibom State Govt Did Not Withdraw Security from Former Governor Udom - Commissioner for Information

The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Information, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Umanah, has dismissed as false and misleading, reports alleging the withdrawal of security personnel attached to former Governor Udom Emmanuel or any other former Governor of the State.

Fielding correspondents questions last night, Umanah described the allegation as false and baseless fabrication intended to mislead the public.

According to him, the deployment, reassignment, or withdrawal of police officers is the exclusive responsibility of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the Commissioner of Police in each State, and not the duty of any Governor.

“ I can tell you on good authority that the Governor did not issue any directive to withdraw security operatives from the immediate past Governor. ,” the Commissioner clarified.

He further noted that all former Governors of Akwa Ibom State are entitled to, and continue to enjoy, their security details as approved by law.

“To the best of our knowledge, there has been no complaint or report from any former Governor or their media aides about the withdrawal of security personnel. The rumour exists only in the imagination of those peddling it,” Umanah added.

The Commissioner urged members of the public to disregard the baseless propaganda, reaffirming that the peace loving Governor of Akwa Ibom State remains focused on promoting peace, unity, and good governance across the State.

He emphasized that Governor Eno will continue to ensure that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation enjoy the full protection and benefits of the law.

Akwa Ibom PDP Exco Debunks Dissolution Rumours

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Akwa Ibom State Chapter, has debunked reports circulating on social media alleging the dissolution of its State Executive Committee (Exco).

At a media briefing held today at the Party Secretariat, Atan Offot, Uyo, the State Chairman, Rt. Hon. (Elder) Aniekan Akpan, dismissed the claims as “false, unconstitutional and politically motivated,” insisting that the present Exco was duly elected at a properly convened state congress for a four-year tenure and remains firmly in office.

Akpan condemned the listing of some elected officials as members of a purported caretaker committee, noting that those officers have already issued disclaimers rejecting such falsehoods.

He further cited a press release by the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, which clarified that the National Working Committee (NWC) has not held any meeting to sanction the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom State Exco. Anyanwu therefore urged the Akpan-led Exco to continue its lawful work.

The PDP leadership in the state urged members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the rumours and remain confident in the duly elected leadership.

“Our Exco stands firm and unshaken. We remain focused on protecting the integrity of our party and advancing the collective interest of Akwa Ibom people,” Akpan assured.

‎The visiting team, led by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of NMCN, Mr. Al-hassan Ndagi, was received and conducted round the college by the Chairman of the Governing Council, Mr. Ndiana-Abasi Udom

‎Mr. Ndagi commended the management of the institution for providing modern infrastructure and facilities, describing them as impressive and functional. He noted facilities such as the Nursing and Midwifery Demonstration Rooms, E-Library/ICT Centre, Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre, College Clinic, laboratories, and well-structured student hostels as evidence of the institution’s commitment to quality.

‎“I must commend your effort in having your people in mind and bringing this institution home. Accreditation is not aimed at finding faults but at maintaining standards. This college is very strategic to the state and the country because of the opportunities it will bring. The Maurid College of Nursing Sciences, Mbiaso, Nsit Ibom Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, the first private College of Nursing Sciences in the state, has commenced admission into its programmes for the 2025/2026 academic session.

In a statement issued by the Registrar, Dr. Tom FredFish, the institution invited applications from suitably qualified candidates for admission into its four-year full-time National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes in General Nursing and Midwifery.

According to the release, applicants must possess a minimum of five (5) credits in not more than two sittings in core science subjects—Mathematics, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics—from WASSCE, SSCE, NECO, or GCE O-Level examinations.

The statement further disclosed that candidates who scored 150 and above in the 2025 JAMB UTME are eligible to apply and obtain admission forms at the institution’s campus in Akwa Ibom State.

Gov Eno's Vision to Power Up Akwa Ibom: Stirring Hope

About eight years ago, a business I had put in a little over three million naira to establish, with so much enthusiasm, packed up barely fifteen months after. The reason? Terrible electricity supply and the costs of fueling two generators every day. It was a business that needed steady power from the minute workers resumed for the day until when they were shutting down. That was between 9-10 hours every day. The location was at Nepaline, Uyo. Between these hours, I had to power a generator non-stop to keep activities running if I didn't want us to appear unprepared for business, thereby losing the confidence of our new customers and the public.

In a week, the Power Distributing Company could only ration about 60 minutes supply during business hours, and the days weren't more than two or three. It was so frustrating that most of us who tenanted the property and within, disconnected ourselves from the company's power source to mitigate expenditures.

As far as we were concerned, it was corporate exploitation to continue paying exorbitant estimated charges for near-zero service. That we even lasted that long in business, under very suffocating condition, before eventually closing shop was down to our tenacity; and more honestly — because we could plug the gaps from some other source while we hoped for change in fortunes.

Now, imagine Mr. Edet in the hinterland of Ibam Edet in Ini Local Government Area who operates a laundry shop as his sole source of income and has to depend on supply from a power company that is never reliable. Or a young Miss Alice in Urue Offong town who has to rely on her small generator often times at 900-1000 naira per litre cost of fuel to satisfy her hair dressing customers. This and other challenges are responsible for both the dearth and death of many small businesses. Also imagine an Akwa Ibom State where communities including the interiors are not only electrified but also enjoy between 20-22 hour power supply every day. Imagine the boom in economic endeavours, imagine the leap in commercial activities.

It is from these scenarios that the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Summit 2025 coming up next week should be seen beyond the prism of a talk show. With the unbundling and decentralization of the power sector by the Federal Government through the new Electricity Act 2023, and the failure of the state power plant to perform optimally, it should be regarded as a necessary first step in the right direction. Repositioning the State Power Plant for premium performance and investments in other key power infrastructure will be at the core.

About two years after a constitutional amendment that allows states to generate, transmit and distribute electricity within their jurisdiction, the impact of this reform is yet to be felt nationally. This is where the Akwa Ibom State Government under the leadership of Governor Umo Eno is taking the lead. Just as we are making a bold mark in the aviation industry as a state with Ibom Air, the possibility of replicating this success in the power sector winks seductively at us. For his bold vision here and for matching it with commitment, the Governor deserves applause.

Only days ago, the Governor while signing an MoU with REA, made it known that the State is now moving "from policy formulation to practical implementation and delivery of electricity solutions that will transform lives and power industries". There is no doubt about his words as the State last year delivered the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Policy (2024), and this year, enacted the Electricity Law (2025). These are critical steps towards securing the energy future of the state. It is safe to say that going forward, Akwa Ibom's energy sector now stands at the cusp of a transformative era.

The forthcoming Summit promises real hope in the search for solution to Akwa Ibom's power challenges. It will seek to unlock private investments, build meaningful partnerships, and welcome sustainable cooperation. It is a sector so critical to the success of the ARISE Agenda, as well as the state's economic growth, hence the governor's obvious passion in making a difference there. Governor Eno has declared a state of emergency in the health sector, he is big on tourism, and passionate about agriculture and rural development. It is the availability of stable and affordable electricity that will solidify the progresses in these and other sectors.

Reliable electricity supply will transform our landscape: factories will return and new ones will birth, jobs will be created, new opportunities will spring up for local talents and even the rural economies will be stimulated. According to studies, energy-related constraints cost Nigeria between 5% - 7% of its GDP. This equals about 25 - 29 billion US dollars annually.

After the Summit, Akwa Ibom people will become even more hopeful that under the focused leadership of Governor Eno, the promise of decentralization will begin to bear fruits in Akwa Ibom State to boost productivity and industrial growth.

A prominent businessman and CEO of Oliver Tweest, Mr. Aniekan Etuk, who hails from Ikot Okubo in Ibesikpo Ward 2, officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday, July 10. The registration took place during a brief yet symbolic ceremony witnessed by party leaders, community stakeholders, and supporters.

He further noted that his defection was intended to add value to the APC and help reposition the party for electoral success, particularly in ensuring the re-election of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno in 2027.

Atiku’s 2023 Campaign Team Moves Support Groups to Project 27 in Support of Tinubu, Akpabio, Umo Eno

In what political observers have described as a strategic realignment with far-reaching implications, a socio-political movement, Project 27, has officially launched its Akwa Ibom State chapter.

The inaugural meeting held in Uyo on Friday, June 27, drew a cross-section of grassroots mobilizers, seasoned political actors, and prominent former members of the Atiku Abubakar Management Support Team, many of whom have now shifted their allegiance to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Umo Eno.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the event, National President of Project 27, Hon. Amb. Ime Victor, described the formation of the group as a direct response to the recent political recalibration by Akwa Ibom Governor, His Excellency Pastor Umo Eno, who signaled alignment with the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move Victor termed "strategic, timely, and in tune with the national reality."

“Project 27 is the outcome of our collective decision to follow the visionary leadership of Governor Umo Eno, whose Arise Agenda resonates deeply with our core belief in progressive governance. The Governor’s alignment with the APC is not just political; it is pragmatic and necessary,” Victor said.

Victor, who led the Akwa Ibom State Atiku Management Support Team during the 2023 general elections, coordinating 210 support groups nationwide, revealed that the entire infrastructure of that campaign has now been fully absorbed into Project 27.

"We didn’t just pivot; we evolved. From 36 states to the FCT, down to the local governments, wards and polling units, our structure remains intact and it now wears a new identity: Project 27,” he explained.

The Akwa Ibom State chapter inauguration brought together all local government coordinators, most of whom played pivotal roles during the Atiku campaign. These political operatives will now spearhead the advancement of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Governor Umo Eno’s Arise Agenda, and the national leadership of Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

"We are firmly positioned on a tripod of transformational leadership, President Tinubu at the federal level, Governor Umo Eno at the state and our own son of the soil, Senator Akpabio, steering the legislative arm.

“This is the kind of unified structure Nigeria and Akwa Ibom need to deliver real development.” Victor noted.

Looking ahead, the group laid out an ambitious roadmap for the 2027 electoral cycle, pledging full support for the re-election of President Tinubu and Governor Umo Eno, as well as continuity for Senator Akpabio in the Senate Presidency.

“We are in this for the long haul. Come 2027, we are confident that Tinubu will secure a second term, Umo Eno will consolidate with a renewed mandate, and Senator Akpabio will continue his influential leadership at the national level,” he asserted.

The State Executive of Project 27 is led by Mr. Samuel Archibong as State Coordinator, Mrs. Alice Aniefiok as Deputy Coordinator, Hon. Praise Otuekong as Secretary and Atuekong Paul Bassey as Publicity Secretary, among other key members of the executive committee.

IK-PRO Slams AILM Over Criticism of SSDC Office Location.

...Describes Allegation as ‘Infantile Blackmail’

The Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Professionals (IK-PRO) has sharply rebuked a recent open letter from the Akwa Ibom Liberation Movement (AILM), branding it a politically motivated distraction designed to malign Senate President Godswill Akpabio and derail the flourish collaboration between the Akwa Ibom State Government and the federal administration.

In the controversial letter titled “Location of SSDC Head Office on Godswill Akpabio’s Property: A Sabotage of State Interest to Satisfy an Individual’s Greed,” AILM alleged that the South South Development Commission (SSDC) had chosen to situate its head office on a property purportedly owned by Senator Akpabio. IK-PRO dismissed the claim as speculative, unfounded and aimed at stirring public sentiment without offering a shred of credible evidence.

In a statement jointly signed by its President, Edidiong John and Secretary, Barr. Kemfon Nneke, IK-PRO described the letter as a “veiled political tantrum” and AILM as a group “absent in meaningful conversations about Akwa Ibom’s development, yet ever-ready to fan the flames of discord.”

“Where was AILM when the SSDC journey began,when the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs was restructured, when the SSDC bill was being debated, passed, and assented to by the President? Where were they when a distinguished daughter of the state, Miss Usoro Akpabio, was appointed as the pioneer Managing Director?” the statement queried. “It is curious that their first public statement on the matter is not one of support or celebration, but of attack, speculation, and distraction.”

IK-PRO emphasized that the SSDC board was only recently confirmed and remains in the early stages of setup with no budget yet allocated and no permanent site selected. The group explained that the use of a temporary office, even if renovated, does not equate to ownership or long-term tenancy.

On the ownership allegation, IK-PRO insisted that there is no documented proof that the building in question belongs to Senator Akpabio. “Refurbishing a building doesn’t amount to leasing it, let alone owning it,” they said. “Public agencies, like private enterprises, are free to select locations based on cost, accessibility, and strategic advantage without external coercion or political meddling.”

The group further warned against veiled attempts to impose office locations on the SSDC, calling such interference “constructive sabotage” that undermines the commission’s independence.

“Trying to blackmail the commission into selecting a politically convenient property is not only disruptive it’s dishonest. “Government-owned facilities like Dakkada Towers are available on the open market, and if AILM insists on a particular location, they should engage competitively, not emotionally.”
the statement declared.

IK-PRO also pointed to deeper political undercurrents fueling the controversy, alluding to recent speculations around Governor Umo Eno’s perceived political realignment. According to the group, the uproar is being driven by forces unsettled by Akwa Ibom’s evolving political landscape.

“Let’s call this what it is a tantrum dressed in activism, but Akwa Ibom people are discerning. We know those who are committed to real service and those clinging to relevance through needless drama.

“This is not the time for petty politics. It’s time to build." the statement concluded.

The group reaffirmed its full support for Senator Godswill Akpabio and the SSDC, urging all stakeholders to shun distractions and rally behind development-oriented governance.

Through Business Grants

In a bold push to energise grassroots enterprise and empower local entrepreneurs, the Chairman of Uyo Local Government Area and State Chairman of ALGON, Dr. Uwemedimo E. Udo, is set to disburse a N100 million grant to small business owners across Uyo on Monday, June 30, 2025.

This landmark intervention, targeted at entrepreneurs across four strategic business categories, is designed to improve microeconomic growth, support job creation, and fortify the informal sector.

For Dr. Udo, this is more than a financial handout; it's a deliberate investment in people, potential and progress. It reflects his commitment to economic inclusion, youth empowerment and sustainable livelihoods for the people of Uyo.

In addition to the disbursement of grants, the day will also mark the official commissioning of the newly remodeled Uyo City Motor Park at Mbiabong Etoi, a modern transport hub expected to boost trade, ease mobility and enhance commercial activities in the capital city.

Further strengthening community infrastructure, Dr. Udo will also unveil the renovated Uyo Traditional Rulers Council facility, reinforcing the role of traditional institutions in local governance. To cap it off, two 500KVA transformers will be handed over to Ikot Akpan Oku and Obio Offot communities, ushering in improved electricity access to power homes and businesses.
