MAIDUGURI, Nigeria — Two girl suicide bombers died when they exploded Sunday in a crowded area near a market in Nigeria 's northeastern city of Maiduguri, injuring 17 people, rescue officials said. Survivor Abubakar Musa said he also saw among the victims the bodies of soldiers, who were guarding a nearby electric power installation. Officials blamed the Boko Haram Islamic extremist group that has staged numerous attacks in Maiduguri, the birthplace of the insurgency. One bomber appeared no older than 7 and the second about 8 years old, said Abdulkadir Jabo, a civilian self-defense fighter who stopped them from going into the market. "I asked the older girl where she was going but she could not speak Hausa or Kanuri ... and appeared very unsettled, so I turned her back," he told The Associated Press. Seconds later, she detonated, followed by the younger girl, Jabo said. Police Commissioner Damian Chukwu identified the bombers as teen-aged girls. Earlier, officials said they were a man and a woman. There was no way to resolve the discrepancies. Boko Haram has used scores of women and girls in suicide bombings, prompting suspicions that some are among the many thousands that they have kidnapped over the years. In a particularly horrific instance, a woman suicide bomber carrying a baby on her back was shot by soldiers at a checkpoint on Nov. 28. The shot detonated her explosives, killing the woman and the baby. Sunday's blasts occurred near Maiduguri's Monday Market, just weeks after the state government reopened the roads leading to the market. They had been closed for nearly two years over security concerns following previous bombings at the market that killed dozens of people. On Friday, two women suicide bombers exploded in a market at Madagali, 150 kilometers (95 miles) southeast of Maiduguri, killing 57 people and wounding 177 including 120 children. Since Nigeria's military has dislodged insurgents from towns and villages this year, Boko Haram has been attacking soft targets. Suicide bombings and attacks on military camps continue, though Nigeria's government claims it has the insurgents on the run. President Muhammadu Buhari declared the Islamic uprising "technically defeated" a year ago. On Friday, he vowed Nigeria's military is working "at slamming the final nail in the coffin of Boko Haram." The seven-year insurgency has killed more than 20,000 people, forced 2.6 million from their homes and created a massive humanitarian crisis. Boko Haram, which has one branch allied to the Islamic State group, wants to install an Islamic state in Nigeria, West Africa's oil giant of 170 million people divided almost equally between a mainly Christian south and predominantly Muslim north. http://mobile.nytimes.com/aponline/2016/12/11/world/africa/ap-af-nigeria-boko-haram.html?_r=0&referer=http://mobile.newsnow.co.uk/h/World+News/Africa/Nigeria |
The Peoples Democratic Party under the leadership of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff on Sunday canvassed for the need to reposition the party through a major political surgery. The party said in a statement signed by the factional PDP Acting National Publicity Secretary Mr. Bernard Mikko, in Abuja. He recalled that there was a general consensus that PDP was undergoing stress and political hemorrhage arising from structural impunity, indiscipline and lack of respect for rule of law. Mikko said that such action had compromised the party’s unity, strength and loss of focus on the key values that engendered public trust and electoral victory for PDP over a decade. “To reverse these trends, a major political surgery has to be undertaken to get the party out of the grip of some selfish, lawless, and undisciplined individuals. “ The individuals who have used our platform to public reckoning, but now want to make the party an exclusive property of theirs. “The PDP as you know is the only formidable political institution that has remained so without change of name, slogan or nomenclature. “The weakness and schisms within the hierarchy of our party today is as a result of violent disregard of our constitution, ethics and rules of engagements of divergent opinions within and outside the party,’’ he said. Mikko said that politics is about building consensus and legitimacy to promote unity through equity, fairness and justice. “The case before the court of Appeal, Port Harcourt division is essentially to determine the legality or otherwise of the Sen. Ahmed Makarfi led national caretaker committee which has no place in the PDP’s constitution,’’ he said. Mikko said that the faction of the party was confident that the Appeal Court would cure the misgivings and error of judgment for which “Makarfi-led caretaker contraption is claiming legality.’’ http://punchng.com/pdp-needs-surgery-says-sheriff-led-faction/

Alexander Okere, Benin Fire on Sunday razed a popular shopping mall, Phill-Hallmark Supermarket, in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, destroying several goods worth billions of naira. It was gathered that the fire started at about 2am, when only a few of the staff were present. It was learnt that the inferno completely destroyed the four floors of the main building, while an extension of the mall was partly burnt. Several goods worth billions of naira were said to have been affected by the fire. The supermarket houses several sections, including a boutique, bakery, food and beverages as well as home appliances. It was also said to have over 50 employees and had recently undergone a major renovation. When our correspondent got to the scene of the incident at about 9am, officials of the state fire service were seen battling to put off the fire. Although it was learnt that firemen from the Nigerian Airforce and the University of Benin visited the scene, the inferno was later extinguished at about 11:30am. Efforts to speak with the management of the mall were not successful as the manager declined comment, as sympathisers thronged the premises of the mall. Governor Godwin Obaseki, who was among the early callers, was at the scene to inspect the level of damage. Others who were sighted at the premises of the building were the lawmaker representing Egor constituency in the House of Assembly, Crossby Eribo; the Executive Director (Enforcement) of the state internal revenue service, Emmanuel Usoh, and a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Paschal Ugbome. Eribo said, “It is very sad. Even if we had a very good and controllable fire service, it still would have been very difficult because it is large shopping mall. “It is a massive loss at this festive period when people are trying to shop with the recession. In fact, I was in tears when I came.” http://punchng.com/goods-worth-billions-destroyed-fire-razes-shopping-mall-edo/
