Posted By: Breaking Timeson: December 02, 2016In: Breaking News, Nation, News, NigeriaNo Comments Print Email Despite the Federal Government’s war against corruption, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says that all the three tiers of government still misappropriate 50% of their allocations from the Federation Account. The anti-graft agency’s Acting Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, who linked the current recession to corruption, lamented that the Federal, State and local governments mismanaged their allocations. Magu stated this on Thursday when he visited the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja. He said that the recession prevalent in Nigeria was a fallout of the corruptive tendencies of the country’s leaders. On the management of public funds, Magu said: “If 50% of the allocations at the three tiers of governments are judiciously put to use, we would not be where we are interns of underdevelopment and infrastructural decay.” Magu warned that except Nigerians resolved collectively to fight corruption in all its ramifications, the youths would have a bleak future. The EFCC boss said: “It is disturbing that Federal, State and Local Government allocations are persistently being misappropriated.” He said that his visit to the Navy was in furtherance of the inter-agency collaboration between the EFCC and other government agencies. According to him, the EFCC alone cannot fight corruption. He stressed that: “We need all hands to be on deck. We have come to appreciate you for the robust relationship that exists between the EFCC and the Nigerian Navy, and we want to leverage on that to stem corruption in Nigeria.” He appealed to Ibas to help mobilize women in uniform, especially in the Nigerian Navy, for the December 7, 2016 flag-off of the “Women Against Corruption” programme of the wife of the President, Mrs. Aisha Buhari. In his response, Ibas said that “corruption fuels insecurity and underdevelopment. We just cannot afford to continue like this.” He advised the EFCC to pay attention also to corruption in the private sector. |
Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River state yesterday, December 1 paid the December salary of all civil servants in the state, The Nation reports. Governor Ben Ayade has made civil servants in Cross River state happy The governor had promised to carry out the action during a retreat for political appointees at the Obudu Ranch Resort recently. Ayade had always paid the workers early since he assumed office in May 2015. In May, salaries were paid on the first day to mark Workers’ Day. While last month, salaries were paid on November 15. Cross River state officially goes on break from December 1 as the state prepares for a month-long carnival and other activities which makes the capital, Calabar, a choice destination for holiday seekers every year. Some workers expressed delight at the early payment of salary ahead of the yuletide, especially as the state got zero allocation from the Federation Account this month. The governor however urged the workers to be prudent on how they spend their salary, promising that he would be there for them in case they run into any financial difficulty before the end of January. Last month, Governor Ayade said he was called by God to govern the state to provide the needed dividends of democracy to the people. He made the statement while addressing thousands of his supporters who besieged the Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar to welcome him on his arrival from Abuja. Meanwhile, in order to boost the tourism potentials of the state, the Cross River state government has concluded plans to float its own airline. According to the state governor, the airline to be called Cally Air would be managed by Dana Group under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement.
