Lionel Messi was named in Argentina’s squad for their heavyweight World Cup clash against bitter rivals Brazil on Friday having missed the last three fixtures through injury. Messi had been sidelined from international duty with a thigh injury but buoyed by a midweek hat-trick for Barcelona in the Champions League against Manchester City, he returns to an Argentina team struggling in fifth spot in World Cup qualifying. On October 19, 1986, precisely 30 years ago, Dele Giwa, a frontline, intelligent and enterprising journalist, trained in the United States of America, was assassinated through a letter bomb, the first of its kind in the history of Nigeria. Giwa was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Newswatch magazine, a magazine which blazed the trail of journalistic revolution in Nigeria. The sad incident took place during the military regime of Ibrahim Babangida. Prior to this incident, Nigeria was largely an innocent nation at peace with herself. Apart from the brutal civil war that lasted for 30 months under Gen. Yakubu Gowon to keep Nigeria one, the nation had not witnessed such a brutal high-tech elimination of a Nigerian citizen, during peace time. It was an incident that shook the nation and its effect reverberated around the world. This death by letter bomb could actually be regarded as the precursor of the modern-day Boko Haram bombings from terrorists that have become almost a part of our daily life experience in the nation. This writer also lost a childhood friend, Rasaq Kazeem (a.k.a Gomero), to the second Nyanya bombing that occurred near Abuja a few years ago. President Muhammadu Buhari himself narrowly survived being bombed at Kaduna before ascending office. The circumstances surrounding Giwa’s assassination were so peculiar and striking. The Tell Magazine of August 31, 1992, pages 27 -28 gave the following account of the incident: “…many people see the assassination of Dele Giwa as an intimidation of the press. In September, 1986, Giwa wrote in his column that proponents of SAP stood the risk of being stoned in the public if the programme failed. The security agents questioned him for that write-up. He was later invited by the State Security Services for another round of questioning. This time, he was accused of gun-running, meeting with leftist groups to foment a socialist revolution and planning to do another story on the removal of Ebitu Ukiwe as Chief of General Staff. Three days after his encounter with the SSS, he was killed by a parcel bomb delivered at his residence. The press went to town on the circumstances surrounding the death of Giwa…” All the historic efforts made by the late Chief Gani Fawehinmi to seek redress on the assassination of Giwa, his client, and his attempts to bring the alleged culprits to answer to face the law met with monumental obstacles. The powers-that-be frustrated all the efforts made by the legal icon to ensure that justice was done in respect of the matter and blocked all his efforts to bring the murderers to book. In the Giwa saga, it appears that justice was not only delayed but apparently, has been denied. The pertinent question to pose at this juncture is: Could it be said that the Giwa case has finally been closed and cannot be reopened? The answer to that question should clearly be that the case is still open and until finally addressed to its logical conclusion by the Nigerian state, it is a debt which the state owes not only to the Giwa family but more importantly, to the victim of the crime and to the society. It should be noted that the assassination was a crime against the state, no matter the calibre of the perpetrators. Time does not run against the state in respect of criminal offences. In other words, there is no statute of limitation preventing the state from reopening the matter. The paramount factor that should be of concern to us is the need to uphold justice at all times. Therefore, put in another way, has “justice” been done in respect of this grievous crime? The answer is a capital NO. Justice has been judicially interpreted in the case of PAM & ANOR vs. MOHAMMED & ANOR (2008) 5-6 S. C. (PT 1) where the apex court defines “justice” as follows: “Justice, that elusive and generic expression, is the cynosure or fulcrum of the administration of justice because it is the aim of the administration of justice to obtain it. Justice, which means in its simplistic content, quality of being just, fair play and fairness, possessing an element of egalitarianism in its functional content, must be done in a case. As a matter of law, the main hire of a judge is to do justice to parties”. Furthermore, in the same vein, Fola Ojo, a columnist with The PUNCH, in an article entitled, “The jackleg judge”, observes appropriately as follows: “…Nigerians in public service, and indeed all of us everywhere, must never forget the Law of Retribution. He who cheats another man will pay for his misdeed. For every crime committed, there must be a punishment. For every wrongdoing, there will be a consequence. The deeds of every man, sooner or later will be appropriately rewarded. The Law of Retribution exempts no one…” (See, The PUNCH, Friday, October 14, 2016). Justice is a critical element of development. A nation that has no regard for justice cannot survive in the comity of civilised nations. In advanced countries of the world, unresolved crimes are painstakingly pursued as much as 30 or 40 years to get to the root in order to apportion justice to citizens to promote social equilibrium. And upon discovering the truth, appropriate sanctions are consequently imposed on the culprit of crime. For instance, if the murder of Mohammed Yusuf, the original leader of Boko Haram, under police custody, had been appropriately redressed, the society would have been saved from the monumental catastrophe that the sect subsequently unleashed on the society, for which innocent lives were lost and innocent schoolchildren in Chibok became victims of societal injustice and disequilibrium. I dare say that all the many problems and abnormalities of present day Nigeria are the consequence of un-redressed injustice of yesteryears, Giwa’s own, inclusive. I therefore seize the opportunity of the 30th anniversary of the gruesome murder of Giwa to appeal to the Buhari administration to reopen the case file, more so, that all the dramatis personae involved in the matter, both the accused persons and the investigators, are still very much alive. It is very important to send a clear message to the world that, in this part of the world, we also have respect for the sanctity of human life and that no human being, no matter how big, either in rank, wealth or influence is greater than the law of the land. This government is hereby enjoined to give justice to the Dele Giwa family, so that his spirit can finally rest in peace. Where there is the will, there must be a way. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/dele-giwa-30-years-after.html?m=0

Manchester City’s Claudio Bravo and Pep Guardiola endured a nightmare return to Barcelona as Lionel Messi’s hat-trick spearheaded a 4-0 Champions League rout for the Spanish champions on Wednesday. Guardiola led Barca to 14 trophies in a glorious four-year reign between 2008 and 2012, but his homecoming was undone by a series of shocking defensive errors and Messi’s clinical touch on his return from injury. Messi pounced on Fernandinho’s slip to give Barca a half-time lead before goalkeeper Bravo was sent off for handling Luis Suarez’s shot outside the area. Two more sumptuous Messi finishes soon followed and Neymar made amends for missing a penalty with a brilliant individual run and finish for Barca’s fourth after Jeremy Mathieu’s red card left both sides with 10 men. City now trail Barca by five points at the top of Group C. Guardiola’s decision to jettison England number one Joe Hart to bring in Bravo at the start of the season will once again come under the spotlight as the Chilean’s difficult start to life at City cost the visitors dearly. However, early on it looked as if Guardiola was to get one over on his former teammate, Barca coach Luis Enrique, as City hemmed the hosts inside their own half and enjoyed the vast majority of possession. The course of the game changed with one huge error on 17 minutes, though, as Fernandinho’s untimely slip left Messi free inside the area and he calmly rounded Bravo to slot home on his first start for a month after a groin injury. Barca’s injury problems continued as Jordi Alba and Gerard Pique limped off before the break due to hamstring and ankle problems respectively. Bravo rushed from his line to deny Neymar latching onto Samuel Umtiti’s brilliant ball over the City defence, whilst Ivan Rakitic headed wastefully wide from a Messi free-kick as Barca threatened a second. Bravo red card Yet, City could easily have been level as Marc-Andre ter Stegen turned Nolito’s angled drive behind before the German made a stunning stop from international teammate Ilkay Gundogan. John Stones then headed a golden chance wide, but City were grateful to Bravo again when his outstretched leg denied Suarez before he reacted in time to turn the rebound over his crossbar just before half-time. There was no reprieve for Bravo eight minutes into the second half when he gifted possession to Suarez and then saved the Uruguayan’s effort whilst outside his box to prompt an obvious red card. City were still reeling from that blow when Messi curled home at the near post — a finish reminiscent of his opening goal when Guardiola also suffered a 3-0 drubbing on his only previous return to the Camp Nou as a visiting coach with Bayern Munich two seasons ago. By contrast, Ter Stegen continued to shine at the other end as he produced another stunning save to turn Kevin de Bruyne’s low effort to safety. Messi completed his second hat-trick in as many Champions League games this season 21 minutes from time thanks to another City gift. Gundogan this time presented the ball to Suarez, who unselfishly squared for Messi to slot home. Mathieu picked up two yellow cards in three minutes to balance up the numbers on each side. But by then the damage had already been done as after winning his first 10 games in charge, Guardiola’s men have now gone four matches without a win. Willy Caballero looked to have saved City from further embarrassment as he stopped Neymar’s penalty three minutes from time. But the Brazilian responded in style by dancing past a series of tired City defenders before slotting into the far corner. If you think you can go to the gym to blow off steam, you might want to think twice because the exercise can treble your risk of getting a heart attack You’ve heard that working out can relieve stress and give you more energy, however, experts are now warning that working out when you are upset can increase the risk of having a heart attack. In fact, going hard at the gym when you are feeling angry can increase your risk of getting a heart attack by up to three times. Researchers at the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, found that: “Being angry or upset doubled the risk of suffering heart attack symptoms within an hour; heavy physical exertion did the same. Having both at the same time more than tripled the risk for a heart attack.” Speaking to Associated Press, Dr Andrew Smyth of McMaster University, who was involved in the research, said this finding was further proof that emotions have physical repercussions. The study, published in the American Heart Association’s journal, Circulation, found that “physical exertion and anger or emotional upset are common in the 1 hour before the onset of symptoms of AMI and that either exposure may act as an external trigger for [acute myocardial infarction] AMI. The greatest magnitude of association was seen in those with both physical exertion and anger or emotional upset in the 1 hour before the onset of symptoms of AMI”. South Africans are at risk of heart disease, according to the South African Heart and Stroke Foundation which says 210 people die from heart disease every day in the country. This is not to say that you should stop working out. There are still a number of benefits to getting your sweat on. The World Health Organisation has set out guidelines on how much exercise is needed for optimal health. It suggests that adults aged 18 to 64 should do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or do at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity throughout the week or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity. “Aerobic activity should be performed in bouts of at least 10 minutes duration. For additional health benefits, adults should increase their moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity to 300 minutes per week, or engage in 150 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity per week, or an equivalent combination of moderate- and vigorous-intensity activity,” the organisation suggests. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/if-you-work-out-when-you-are-angry.html?m=0

A skeleton suspected to be that of a woman was found propped up on a chair in the apartment of a pastor, Sunday Aremu, in Peaceland Estate, Akute area of Ogun State on Friday after his landlady made a surprise visit. Saturday PUNCH learnt that the landlady decided to burst into the apartment to evict the man, said to be a pastor, because he owed rents. The landlady reportedly took the drastic step after making several failed attempts to get arrears of rent that had accumulated for over a year from the man. An eyewitness said the man’s sister went missing without any trace six years ago, fuelling insinuations that the skeleton might be that of the woman. A photograph of the skeleton in a sitting position on a sofa showed a fully dried skeketon with clothes still on the bones. “The woman ran out of the house and screamed, calling on people in the neighbourhood for help. The man is not married and runs one small church here,” the eyewitness said. Reports in the neighbourhood suggested that the pastor used to live with his sisters in the apartment and that one of them named Funmi later went missing. Neighbours said every time they asked about the missing sister, he would say she was on a prayer mountain. The case has been reported to the Ogun State Police Command. Spokesperson for the command, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the story, and identified the pastor, said he was arrested along with his sister, Funmilayo Aremu. He said, “Our preliminary investigation has shown that the victim is their sister called Funmilayo Aremu. It seems the victim’s body decomposed right on the chair where it was found. “The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hammed Iliyasu, has directed that the suspects should be transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation at the police headquarters for thorough investigation.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/landlady-bursts-into-tenants-room-finds.html?m=0

The Federal Government has issued a seven-day ultimatum to retail store giants, Shoprite and Next Cash ‘N’ Carry to withdraw any product that contains Genetically Modified Organisms from their shelves or risk a total shutdown. Director-General, National Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, issued the warning in Abuja on Friday during a meeting with representatives of the two mega shops. Egbeda said the agency had received complaints from members of the public about the sale of GMO foods in the two stores. His words, “Recently, we carried out a survey of likely GMO products and we have been able to have some collections, some materials that we call GMO suspects. We call them GMO suspects because we have not been able to ascertain their status. “Why we have invited the superstores basically is for them to understand that some of their products need to be properly ascertained before they are brought in, especially the imported ones that may contain genetically modified materials, so that they will not run afoul of the law. “There is a law in place. We will not want any segment of the society out of ignorance to act in manners that will infringe on the law. The Biosafety Management Act empowers the NBMA to regulate the activities of modern biotechnology and the use of genetically modified organisms. “If they have any GMO food in their stores, they should withdraw them from their shelves within seven days. The NBMA will not hesitate to shut down those stores found selling GMO products. We will not want to see any GMO food in your stores. We urge you to comply with this Act. “We have taken samples, which we are analysing. This information is not peculiar to only the superstores. We are not threatening anybody, we are just telling you the consequences of dealing in GMO products if found in these stores. Within the next seven days, we believe you will withdraw from your shelves all foods that are derived from genetically modified organisms. “Please, it is an advice and this advice is not without a legal backing. So, we urge you to withdraw all GMO foods from your shelves and formalise your dealings by obtaining permits,” the NBMA boss warned. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/why-fg-may-shut-shoprite-next-cash-n.html?m=0

About 21 senior officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria were on Wednesday sacked in a major shake-up. Those affected, including directors, general managers and deputy general managers, were reportedly handed their termination of appointment letters. Sources at the head office of FAAN in Lagos told our correspondent that no fewer than 10 general managers were reportedly demoted. They were said to have earlier been improperly promoted. It was learnt from an official of the Ministry of Aviation that the sacking was the first batch of the shake-up planned by the government to reposition FAAN. Stakeholders said the Federal Government had been concerned about certain issues at FAAN such as the engagement of about 40 general managers, the creation of many directorates that brought about duplication of duties and raised the authority’s monthly overhead to an estimated N800m. Sources said the government planned to reduce the number of workers by way of restructuring in order to cushion the effects of the current economic crisis. Some of the general managers were said not to have the requisite qualifications for the sensitive positions they held, as many of them, including deputy general managers, had reportedly left the university about 10 years ago and could not have qualified for the office they held. Almost all the directors were said to have been affected, while an acting director of finance was said to have been demoted to Grade Level 10 and redeployed to the Department of Information Communications and Technology. Many of the affected officers were moved from Grade Levels 17 and 16 down to 10, 12 and 14. Some of the demoted workers were said to have received their letters, authorising them to report to their superiors, who were their subordinates before the exercise. Meanwhile, new directors of finance and accounts, as well as commercial and business development, have been appointed. The Federal Government is also reportedly planning to reduce the number of directorates in the aviation agencies as part of the restructuring exercise. This, it was learnt, would affect the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency. The restructuring at the airports is said to be the fallout of a panel’s report headed by the Head of Service, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita, which recommended the need for a proper placement in FAAN. The NAMA may get a new managing director before December as its acting Managing Director, Emmanuel Anasi, is expected to proceed on terminal leave by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation has said it will hold a public hearing with stakeholders to discuss the proposed concession of some airport terminals by the Federal Government. The Chairman of the committee, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, stated this in Lagos during the oversight visit by the committee members to the aviation agencies on Wednesday. He said the public hearing would give stakeholders the opportunity to make their input. Onyejeocha said, “I do not believe in the concession of the four major airports that we have because I know those four airports are funding the other 18 international airports. And of course, you have to look at the issue of workers and the Nigerian people as a whole. “We are going to conduct a public hearing where we will take all the issues together; where we will be able to ask Nigerians and of course the key players in the aviation industry, including the workers, and even journalists, to tell us what they think.” The 18-member delegation said it was in Lagos to see how the sector was faring amid the current economic recession. Onyejeocha expressed disappointment at the slow pace of work at the new international terminal being constructed by the Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Company. According to her, with the current pace of work, the project may not be delivered by December as projected. “We have three other terminals that we are hopeful will be delivered by December; so what it simply means is that Lagos is lagging behind and we will take it seriously,” she said. The committee also visited the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, where the regulatory body was asked to do everything necessary to keep domestic carriers in business. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/fg-fires-20-faan-directors-managers.html?m=0

Google and Facebook on Wednesday announced plans to work with a China Soft Power Holdings subsidiary to connect Los Angeles and Hong Kong with a high-capacity internet cable. The Pacific Light Cable Network will stretch 12,800 kilometers (8,000 miles), crossing beneath the Pacific Ocean in a first-of-its-kind direct connection between the two locations, according to companies involved with the project. PLCN is expected to handle some 120 terabytes of data per second, enough capacity to enable 80 million high-definition video conference calls simultaneously between Los Angeles and Hong Kong, said Google network infrastructure director Brian Quigley. Google and Facebook are working with Pacific Light Data Communication Company and with undersea communications technology firm TE SubCom on the cable, which was scheduled to be ready in mid 2018, according to a joint release. “PLCN will be among the lowest-latency fiber optic routes between Hong Kong and the US and the first to connect directly using ultra-high-capacity transmission,” PLDC chairman Wei Junkang said. “It is certainly gratifying that global technology companies like Google and Facebook have become co-investors in PLCN.” Most Pacific subsea cables stretch from the US to Japan, according to Facebook vice president of network engineering Najam Ahmad. “As the number of people using Facebook apps and services continues to grow in the region, PLCN will help further connect Asia and our data centers in the US,” Ahmad said. “This new direct route will give us more diversity and resiliency in the Pacific.” – Cables to Clouds – Lifestyles increasingly centered on access to cloud-based online services as well as to video, pictures and other content on the internet have increased the need for infrastructure capable of quickly and efficiently moving digital data. PLCN will be the sixth submarine cable in which Google has an ownership stake, according to Quigley. The US internet giant claimed to have the “largest network backbone of any public cloud provider.” Microsoft and Facebook early this year teamed together to lay a high-speed Internet cable across the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. The subsea “MAREA” cable was expected to be completed by late 2017, with the aim of meeting growing demand by the tech companies’ customers for fast, reliable data connections. MAREA was expected to have a capacity of some 160 terabytes per second of data, according to the companies. The 6,600 kilometer cable system will also be the first connecting the United States and southern Europe, running from Northern Virginia to Bilbao, Spain, Microsoft and Facebook said. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/google-facebook-team-on-undersea-cable.html?m=0

The police in Lagos have arrested a 25-year-old woman, Joy Okeke, after her boyfriend, Ofoagbu Ekene, reportedly diverted 40,000 litres of diesel worth N7.2m and fled. Okeke was apprehended along with a teacher, Lukman Kelani, who was said to have stood as a guarantor of the fleeing suspect at Northbridge Oil, which employed him as a driver. PUNCH Metro learnt that the company had sent Ekene to deliver the fuel at a filling station in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on October 1. It was gathered that the company became worried two days after when the filling station that was supposed to receive the fuel called that it was still being awaited. After a futile attempt to reach Ekene, the company was said to have reported the matter to the police, which eventually recovered the company’s empty tanker at Aba, Anambra State. The police subsequently traced Ekene to his residence in the Ibeju Lekki area of Lagos on October 5 and picked his girlfriend up. The woman was said to have led the operatives to the guarantor’s house. The girlfriend told the police that she was at home together with Ekene on October 1 when he received a call from the company to embark on a trip to Port Harcourt. She said, “We have been together for four months now. I only know he hails from Abia State. I don’t know any of his family. We were at home on that day when he was called from the office to take fuel to Port Harcourt. He called me two days after, requesting that I send him recharge cards which I did. He said the vehicle he travelled in was faulty. “I was surprised when I was told by the police that he diverted the fuel and fled.” Kelani, the guarantor, said Okeke, who is her church member and a colleague, persuaded him to vouch for Ekene when the company wanted to employ him. The 35-year-old teacher, who hails from Ogun State, added that the last time he heard from Ekene was September 24, when he (Ekene) congratulated him on the telephone on the birth of his new born baby. He said, “I stood as his guarantor because of the relationship between his lover and me. We attend the same church and teach in the same school. The last time we spoke was on the telephone. My wife just gave birth and Ekene called to congratulate us. I don’t know his whereabouts.” The police, however, said the duo had refused to give useful information to trail the prime suspect and consequently arraigned them on Tuesday in a Tinubu Magistrate’s Court on one count of perversion of justice. The charge read, “That you, Lukman Kelani, Joy Okeke, and others at large, on October 5, 2016, at about 10am, at the Elemoro Police Station, in the Lagos Magisterial District, conspired among yourselves to obstruct, prevent, pervert or defeat the cause of justice by refusing to give the police any useful information about one Ofoagbu Ekene, who you (Kelani) signed for as a guarantor to enable him to secure a driving job at Northbridge Oil and having secured the job, he stole 40,000 litres of diesel valued at N7,280,000 property of Northbridge Oil, abandoned the truck in Anambra State and ran away.” The police prosecutor, Inspector Philip Osijale, told the court that the offence contravened Section 97 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the count. The presiding magistrate, Mrs. M.B. Folami, granted them bail in the sum of N2m each with two sureties each in like sum. Folami added that the sureties must relate to the defendants by blood and deposit N500,000 each to the account of the chief registrar. The defendants were remanded in prison custody pending when their bail conditions would be perfected while the case was adjourned till November 21, 2016. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/driver-absconds-with-n72m-fuel.html?m=0 |
The House of Representatives on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on kidnapping in the country to curb escalating kidnapping cases. It said the police, the armed forces and telecommunications service providers should also convene a national security summit to find urgent solutions to rising kidnapping incidents. Aside identifying the harsh economic realities of today as a factor, members observed that criminals found kidnapping to be “more lucrative these days than armed robbery.” A member from Ondo State, Mr. Babatunde Kolawole, had raised the issue on the floor under matters of urgent public importance to set a debate in motion. Leading the debate on his motion, titled, “Need for the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency on kidnapping in the country”, the All Progressives Congress lawmaker stated, “In the last 10 years, the incidence of kidnapping for ransom in the country has escalated to a very disturbing level and has reached a point where no one is safe anymore.” He said available statistics indicated that in 2013 for example, “Nigeria had the most kidnap attempts in the world, accounting for 26 per cent of all such recorded incidents, followed by Mexico with 10 per cent and Pakistan with 7per cent.” Kolawole reeled out a list of major kidnapping incidents in the country. Members endorsed the motion in a unanimous voice vote at the session, which was presided over by the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/reps-ask-fg-to-declare-state-of.html?m=0

A total of 184 civil servants were disciplined for their different roles in the padding of the 2016 budget. This was contained in Buhari’s authorised biography, ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Challenges of Leadership in Nigeria’, written by Prof. John Paden and presented to the public on Monday. Of the 184, Paden said 22 top officials were dismissed from service. He said the President viewed the padding as an attempt to scuttle his administration’s innovations, hence his decision to wield the big stick against the culprits. The author wrote, “Buhari himself was frustrated by earlier padding of the budget by bureaucrats in some of the ministries. “This was interpreted by the Buhari team as an attempt to scuttle the innovations proposed by the President by inflating their costs. “When Buhari found out, he was reported to be angry and ordered a purge of the ministries involved from the Director-General down. “Twenty-two top officials were dismissed, including the budget director. In all, 184 civil servants were disciplined.” He added that even after the budget had been adjusted downward by the National Assembly, the country would still have to borrow $3.5bn, as a result of the drop in oil prices. In February, Buhari had while addressing the Nigerian community in Saudi Arabia, vowed that all those involved in the padding of the 2016 national budget, which led to the discrepancies in the document, would face severe punishment. He had said the alterations, which he described as embarrassing and disappointing, made the document, being debated in the National Assembly at that time, completely different from what was prepared by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning. Describing those responsible for the distortion of the budget proposals as entrenched interests, the President had said since he had been holding public offices, he had never heard about budget padding before the incident. Buhari had added, “The culprits will not go unpunished. I have been a military governor, petroleum minister, military Head of State and headed the Petroleum Trust Fund. “Never had I heard the words budget padding. Our Minister of Budget and National Planning did a great job with his team. “The minister became almost half his size during the time, working night and day to get the budget ready, only for some people to pad it. “What he gave us was not what was finally being debated. It is very embarrassing and disappointing. We will not allow those who did it to go unpunished.” Reaffirming his government’s zero tolerance for corruption, Buhari said the war against corruption was a monumental task that he was determined to tackle successfully. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/22-top-federal-officials-sacked-over.html?m=0

A United States flight was evacuated prior to takeoff when a passenger’s Galaxy Note 7 — reportedly a replacement in Samsung’s global recall — caught fire, landing the company in new controversy. Samsung has been struggling with a recall of 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 handsets due to complaints of exploding batteries, a problem the replacement phones are supposed to fix. But on Wednesday, a Southwest Airlines flight leaving Louisville, Kentucky was evacuated after a passenger’s new Samsung phone began emitting smoke. Brian Green, the owner, told tech news website The Verge that the phone was a replacement, which he picked up on September 21. He also provided a picture of its box, which has a black square symbol indicating that it was a replacement. Some 60 per cent of US consumers had swapped their devices for replacements by the end of last month. The Verge reported Green had powered down the phone for takeoff, an account The New York Times confirmed through other eyewitnesses. The heat damage from the apparent explosion was so severe that a fire official could not independently verify the model of the phone, according to ABC News. “Until we are able to retrieve the device, we cannot confirm that this incident involves the new Note7,” Samsung said in a statement. “We are working with the authorities and Southwest now to recover the device and confirm the cause,” the company added. “Once we have examined the device we will have more information to share.” The unprecedented recall, the first involving Samsung’s flagship smartphone, has struck a blow to the reputation of the South Korean electronics giant, the world’s largest smartphone maker. With ever-fiercer competition, Samsung is desperate to avoid a full-blown disaster that could hammer its reputation. Meanwhile the recall could cost the firm $3bn in the long run, some analysts say. “The continued news reports about the Note 7 aren’t good for Samsung, especially for its brand reputation,” Park Kang-ho, an analyst at Daishin Securities Co. told Bloomberg. “If the noise continues even as phones are replaced, consumers will start raising doubts over the next Galaxy S model, so the faster Samsung settles things the better for its business.” Southwest Airlines said in a statement that all customers and crew “deplaned calmly and safely via the main cabin door.” AFP http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/more-trouble-for-samsung-as-phone.html?m=0

Hoodlums on Wednesday attacked officials of the Lagos State Transport Management Authority at Costain Roundabout in Lagos and vandalised one of their patrol vehicles. The hoodlums went on rampage over suspicion that one LASTMA official hit a commercial bus driver with a charm while arresting him over traffic offence. The hoodlums and commercial drivers then blocked the Costain roundabout, causing a traffic snarl on the ever busy road. An eyewitness, Mr. Kehinde Salami, said the LASTMA official stopped the commercial bus, adding “The driver was dragging the steering wheel with the officials and one of them hit the driver with hand, the driver fell down and started foaming from the mouth”. He said, “The LASTMA officials took away the bus, leaving the man on the floor. “While this was happening, a LASTMA patrol car 003, with registration number RT 503 LA came into the scene with two officials in it. The hoodlums’ pounced on them but the officials escaped. “The vehicle was vandalized; they even attempted to set it ablaze if not for BRT buses parked within the vicinity.” The conductor of the erring commercial bus, who simply identified himself as Kevin, said that LASTMA officials arrested their vehicle while attempting to pick passengers at Costain Roundabout. According to the conductor, the officials physically assaulted both of them until the driver fell down and fainted. He said, “As soon as he fell down, the LASTMA officials took away our bus.” The hoodlums took the victim in a tricycle with registration number KJA 409 QD to LASTMA Iponri office where a scuffle ensued. The hoodlums later retreated following the arrival of police patrol teams which removed the vandalized LASTMA car to Iponri Police Station. A Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service with registration number KSF 632 DR later took the victim to General Hospital in Lagos Island. LASTMA Commander in Surulere, Gbolahan Rasheed, who was in the vandalised car, said that his vehicle ran into the hoodlums at about 9:20 am at Costain. He said, “We escaped by a whisker. I ran to Iponri Police Station to report, while the driver of the patrol car, Abalaya, was beaten seriously.” He said that the commercial bus driver, who allegedly fainted at the scene, suddenly started talking on getting to Lagos Island General Hospital. He said, “The doctor called from the hospital to inform us that the driver had been discharged. “That is why we arrested the conductor and one other, who claimed to be a brother to the commercial bus driver. We want them to provide the driver.” NAN http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/hoodlums-attack-lastma-officials-in.html?m=0 |
Mrs Folake Ajayi, Chairperson Oyo State Chapter of the Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA), has urged collaboration of all stakeholders in protecting the rights of the girl-child. Ajayi in an interview on Wednesday in Ibadan said that although some states had domesticated the Child Rights Act, 2003, many girls still faced early marriage, genital mutilation and rape, among other challenges. “It is depressing that Section 29(4) (b) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria technically approved child marriage. “This is by its provision that any woman who is married shall be deemed to be of full age. “Child betrothal and marriage occur when a girl-child is betrothed and married off,’’ she noted. Ajayi said that Sections 23 and 24 of the Oyo State Child Rights Law, 2006, prohibited child marriage and betrothal. “Under the Child Rights Law, a child is said to be a person under the age of 1 “Section 23 of the same law says a person under the age of 18 is incapable of contracting a valid marriage. “If such a marriage does take place, it should be declared null and void and of no effect. “There should be full enforcement of the law because a law that is not enforced, in my own opinion, is a toothless bulldog,’’ she said. According to the FIDA chairperson, child rights can be divided into survival, protection, development s and participation rights. She said that the rights of the girl-child in Nigeria were at a higher risk of being breached. Ajayi noted that female genital mutilation (female circumcision) was still rampant. “I define it as the gross violation of a female’s body and the wicked mutilation of her genital. “ It is a calculated attempt to suppress and oppress the woman in a girl. “Section 26 of Oyo State Child Rights Law prohibits mutilation of the female genital. “Any one guilty of this offence is liable on conviction to a fine of N20, 000 or imprisonment for a term of two years. Asthma is one of the leading chronic inflammatory disease that makes the bronchial tubes (airways) sensitive to irritation. The tightening of the smooth muscles in the bronchial tubes produce excess muscle that prevent air from passing out of the lungs. This often reduces the Oxygen in the blood thereby making the patients gaps for air, wheel and cough. SYMPTOMS OF ASTHMA Trouble breathing, wheezing, coughing, chest pain and cheat tightness. TREATMENT Inhale can be used to revive an asthmatic patient. But this far ever centuries has not yielded much result as regard the treatment. If you use inhaler more than twice a week, it may worsen the situation and so you will need alternative medication. (1) Collect the white fluid from snail, mix the fluid with honey to form syrup. Technology has made it possible for parents to track the movement of their children. This can prevent the children from getting lost or find them, if they are missing. Below are some useful features for this purpose: Lassy Project The goal of Lassy Project, according to www.parents.com, is to minimise the amount of time it takes to send out an alert that your child has gone missing. Unlike the Amber Alert, Lassy Project provides an image of the missing child and a real time map showing the coordinates of the child’s last known location. It works in seconds, not hours, and only alerts relevant people in the immediate area (the app is free on iPhone, iPad, Android). Find my kids – footprints Using the GPS in real time, this app helps you keep track of and automatically locate where your child goes with his phone. For instance, if he is travelling alone, you can confirm that he has arrived at a specific destination, or if he is meeting up with friends, they can confirm each other’s locations. Location information is never shared with anyone else beyond those who have permission to see it, and the data is saved for a later review. Even though the app is free, parents will need a subscription for the tracking feature. Download is free but the service requires a monthly fee on iPhone and iPad. Missing child alerts Missing child alerts mobile app can be found on Google Play Store. It helps notify and rapidly spread the word through social media when a child goes missing. *Simply download the app and choose your state – that is it! You will automatically receive updates when a new child goes missing in your state. *Click the “Settings” tab to change your state. Sygic family Sygic family keeps your family safe by allowing you to check the real-time location and the battery levels of your family members’ smartphones. You can also track your children’s whereabouts, or have them checked periodically to let you know where they are and if they have arrived at their destinations safely. The app also has an in-built messaging system, which lets you send messages for free over an Internet connection. You can also set ‘Safe or Unsafe zones’ – a notification will be sent to you when they enter or leave these zones. There is also an SOS button available in this app, which lets you send out your exact location at the touch of a button. Life360 Life360 has the GPS locations of your family members via their smartphones, a panic button, and alerts when someone enters a preset zone (for instance, gets home). It also lets you check where they have been (location history); where to get help in an emergency (hospitals, police stations), and allows you to have group chats. Google Latitude Google Latitude is less of an app but more of a tracking tool. It allows you to see where your family members are on a map. To use it, go to Google Latitude and start adding your family members via their Gmail contacts. When they accept, you can see their locations on Google Map on your phone. Their locations will be at the background even when the app is closed or when your smartphone is locked. The app is not restricted to family members; you can use it to check just about anyone’s whereabouts, provided they are on Google Latitude. MobileKids This is a monitoring device that sends parents alerts when kids have been using their mobile phones in the middle of the night; when they add a new unrecognised contact, or when they download a new app. Parents will also get statistics about their children’s mobile usage, which they can use to set usage limits (premium account). There is still the much sought-after location feature, with a slight twist. With the SOS button and Check-in feature, the child can request their parents to track their movement live via the GPS tracking, something like remotely ‘walking’ them to their destination. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/wike-frees-prisoners-on-death-row.html?m=0

Sam Allardyce could be banned from football following the revelations that brought his reign as England manager to an abrupt end, Football Association Chief executive Martin Glenn said Saturday. Allardyce’s dream job ended after just 67 days as the Daily Telegraph newspaper released secretly-filmed footage of him making controversial remarks about a variety of subjects, including side work and circumventing FA regulations. The FA is awaiting the newspaper’s full transcript before deciding what action, if any, to take against the 61-year-old. Glenn said charges could be brought against Allardyce and punishments “could range from a fine to a ban”. “It is realistic,” Glenn said when asked if charges could follow. “I am pleased that the Telegraph are releasing (the full transcripts) to the police first because that is what has to happen. “Once we get access to that, we have a separate integrity unit,” explained Glenn, who admitted he had felt “let down” by Allardyce. “I have asked myself a lot about this,” he said. “The easy decision was actually to keep him and tough it out. I do feel let down because I genuinely think for football reasons he was a really good choice and just what we needed after the Euros.” Meanwhile, Glenn admitted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is among the candidates who “perfectly” fit the criteria to take the England job. England Under-21 boss Gareth Southgate has been placed in interim charge for the remaining four matches of 2016, giving Glenn, FA chairman Greg Clarke and technical director Dan Ashworth the chance to take their time when recruiting a full-time successor. Frenchman Wenger, 66, is out of contract in the summer and would fit the bill, and he even said on Friday: “If I am free one day, why not?” And Glenn acknowledged: “Of course he’d fit the criteria perfectly. Of course he would, as would a few others.” AFP http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/10/sam-allardyce-may-be-banned-from.html?m=0

The potential of smartphones, supported by a strong classroom management system, can be summed up with what is called ‘The Five C’s’, which are Collaborate, Communicate, Create and Coordinate/Curate. Of the 44 ideas below regarding smartphones, 12 can be accomplished with a simple mobile phone. Look at the enormous potential. Use smartphones to collaborate Have students peer-assess their classmates’ essays through a Google Form embedded on teacher page, and allow them to view real-time constructive criticism. Afterwards, polish up the spreadsheet and share with students. Believe it, they will be interested.Allow texting in class to peer-edit and offer constructive criticism for writing projects. Most Nigerians who have seen popular comic actor, John Okafor, aka Mr. Ibu, in action will agree that he is a talented comedian and one of a few Nollywood practitioners that are naturally cut out for the roles that they play in the movies. Okafor has, so far, been able to prove to his fans that he does not only live by making other people to laugh away their sorrows; he is also humour personified. But the actor, in an interview with our correspondent, also reveals that despite his commitment to making people to laugh, he has had cause to be unhappy, even bitter, on some occasions. On one of such, Okafor had an axe to grind with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba. He was so bitter that he almost instituted a court action against the management of the hospital. Recounting what happened, he says, “The matter was actually between the Paediatric Department of the hospital and me. It was in 2011. My wife and our two-year-old son had been kidnapped. After I paid the ransom demanded and they were released by the kidnappers, I returned to Lagos from Enugu. “Then on January 18, 2011, my son fell ill. He was diagnosed with inflammation of the liver. The hospital suggested that he should be scanned. At the same time, I was informed that I could take my son out of the hospital to get the scan done elsewhere. But the same people later declined, saying that everything had to be done in the hospital because he was too weak to be taken outside. “After a while, I was told that there was no electricity in the hospital. When I asked if there was no standby generator, they said there was no fuel in it. I offered to pay for fuel only to be told that the man that operated the generator was not around. When I left the place and got back later, the man still had not returned. Then I was advised to write an application and to submit to the admin department.” After writing the application, Okafor found that there was nobody to receive and treat it. While he was waiting, he was told that his son’s condition required blood transfusion. The actor did everything possible to ensure that the ailing boy was given treatment at the hospital, but his efforts were in vain. Finally, the little boy gave up the ghost. “That was how my son died. Later, one of the doctors came to me and, without even sympathising with me, asked if I could release my boy’s corpse to him so that they could cut it open and use it to teach other medical students. In that moment, I felt like committing murder for the first time in my life. “When I told my lawyer what happened at the hospital, he was shocked. He said it was actionable. I told him that I was ready to take the hospital management to court and sue it for $100 million in damages because my son’s death was caused by the carelessness of the professionals whose duty was to save his life. But my lawyer advised me to let go”. Reflecting on his career, Okafor says he has been publicly embarrassed by fans at different times and in several places. “I quickly forgive them because I was the one that looked for trouble in the first place. On one occasion, somebody came to me and said, ‘Ibu, because of what your jokes have done to me and my family, I promised God that anywhere I meet you, I would slap your face.’ I told him them to go ahead. Then he slapped me so hard that I couldn’t see clearly for two hours,” he says. Mr. Ibu obviously relishes his status as a popular and relatively comfortable Nollywood actor. It is doubtful that, given a choice, he would have given up acting for any other career. Going down memory lane, the actor reveals that he used to be a boxer and a Karate practitioner. Admitting that only a few people are aware of this aspect of his personal history, he says, “I practised Shotokan Karate for 16 years and I was a member of the Karate Federation of Nigeria. I happen to be the first instructor that was teaching Karate in federal government colleges in Nigeria.” The actor, no doubt, cuts the picture of a man enjoying a blissful marriage. But, asked if he ever had a girlfriend before he got married, he replied, “I had problems with my relationships with women. Each time I had a new girlfriend, other men would always take her from me. Whenever I fell in love with a girl, somebody would snatch her from me. But I don’t fear any sense of loss because I married the best woman on earth. My wife is a former beauty queen. She was the winner of the 2004 Face of Imo beauty pageant.” But Okafor says that even now that he is happily married, women have not stopped coming to him for a date. “I don’t woo them, though. They are the ones chasing me. That is part of the price I have to pay for being popular.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/09/i-dont-woo-women-they-chase-me-mr-ibu.html?m=0
