Automatic braking is a great safety feature which will soon be standard on virtually all new cars in the United States. But don't trust it to keep you out of an accident, AAA says. Automatic braking systems use cameras and sensors to slow or stop a car if there is a stopped vehicle another obstacle ahead. But not all of these systems are created equal, according to a AAA study which found some far more effective than others. Some automatic braking systems are designed to to slow a car down, which won't necessarily prevent an accident. And even the systems designed to bring a car to a full stop stop a don't always prevent a collision. Most automakers have agreed to make automatic braking standard by the 2022 model year. About 10% of new vehicles currently have automatic braking as standard equipment, and more than half offer it as an option. And many car buyers want the feature on their next new car, according to a AAA survey. The problem: Two-thirds of them believe that an automatic braking system will stop the car without any help from the driver, said AAA, but that simply isn't true. "It's an excellent technology and if I was shopping for a vehicle today, it's one I would look for," said Greg Brannon, director of automotive engineering AAA. "That said, there's a big gap between consumer understanding of the systems and the system's performance." Automatic braking is one of the stepping stones to the true self driving cars that are now being developed. But the safety of self-driving cars has been under fire since a driver using the Tesla "Autopilot" feature was killed in May when a truck pulled in front of him. Bannon said it's important that drivers understand that even the bestautomatic braking systems will only avoid a crash 40% of the time if a car is traveling at 45 mph. But even if there is a crash, slowing a car down is still important. If a car traveling 30 mph can be slowed to just 20 mph before impact that eliminates about 50% of the energy from an accident. "You need to keep your hands on the wheel and foot on the brake," he said. "Drive like you don't have it, and it'll be a nice safety net for you." AAA does not release the results of its tests of specific automatic braking systems. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/dont-trust-automatic-braking-to-prevent.html?m=0

A 43-year-old teacher, Gbemisola Edward, and her 11-year-old daughter, Dolapo, have been confirmed dead at an Ogun State hospital after suffering from severe burns. The woman’s husband, Joshua, was said to have poured petrol on her, their daughter, and his seven-year-old son, Samson, and set fire on them. Man sets wife, son, daughter ablaze over property PUNCH Metro learnt the incident happened on Thursday on Augustine Street, Ire Akari Estate, in the Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State, after a disagreement between the couple. Gbemisola’s son, Joshua Babatunde, 16, who escaped by a whisker, said his stepfather had wanted his mother to sell their three-bedroomed apartment, but she refused. He said, “It was the scream of my mother that woke me up. Dolapo and Samson were also set ablaze. I wanted to put out the fire when my stepfather poured petrol on me as well. Before he returned with matches, I managed to escape and reported at the Ifo Police Station. “He was working with a factory but was sacked some months ago. He then told my mother to sell the house so that he could use the money to start a business. But my mother said she would never sell the house she struggled to build. “We moved into the house in January. The following month, he and Samson started living with us. It was a woman at our former residence in Iyana Ipaja (Lagos State) that bore Samson for him. He used to beat mum while we were in Iyana Ipaja.” PUNCH Metro gathered that Joshua fled immediately the incident happened, while the victims were admitted to Aron Hospital, a private facility in the area. Dolapo was said to have died a few minutes after she got to the hospital while the mother died on Friday. Samson, who has burns in the head, hands and legs, is still responding to treatment. Gbemisola’s brother, Wale, said she had always been abused by the husband, adding that constant beatings forced her to relocate from Iyana Ipaja to Ifo. He said, “Their relationship had been fraught with quarrels since when he was living with my sister in our house at Iyana Ipaja. There was a time he threatened to kill her with a machete. He stole her money and fled. “When he knew my sister had built a house, he went there to reconcile with her. She insisted that they needed to go to the registry which they did in February. I visited my sister two weeks ago. She said her husband had been threatening her again and that she had told him to leave by the end of August. “It was on Thursday afternoon that I got a call that he set her and the children ablaze.” The Managing Director, Aron Hospital, Dr. Kayode Ayoola, said, “The burns were serious. The girl died about 10 minutes after she was admitted, while her mother died the following day. The boy’s condition is relatively okay but nobody is ready to take care of him.” The Ogun State Police Command’s acting spokesperson, ASP Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the command had launched a manhunt for the killer husband. He said, “We learnt the man and his wife had a quarrel over the ownership of the house they lived in. While the family was asleep, the man poured patrol on the living room and set it ablaze. As a result, the woman and the two children suffered first degree burns. The Commissioner of Police has ordered that the suspect be fished out. He can only run, he cannot hide.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/man-sets-wife-son-daughter-ablaze-over.html?m=0

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man, Surakat Idowu, for allegedly brutalising his five-year-old daughter with a hot iron in the Ikotun area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that 45-year-old Idowu, who separated from his wife in 2013, allegedly tortured the girl with an iron in the face and in the private parts on Monday. Our correspondent gathered that the girl, who stayed with her father on Kayode Toyeso Street, Liasu Road, in the Ikotun area, had been asked by her father to dispose faeces in a potty into the latrine, but she poured it on the floor. It was learnt that Idowu, who worked as an auto mechanic, got a hot iron and allegedly battered the girl’s body. Our correspondent was told that a neighbour, who witnessed the incident, reported at the Ikotun Police Division and the suspect was arrested. The victim, who is said to be in a nursery school, was reportedly blinded by the burns she suffered on the face, while her private parts were swollen. A neighbour, identified only as Basirat, said the girl slipped while going to pour the faeces into the latrine. She said, “The mechanic had a quarrel with his wife and divorced her in 2013 when the girl was just two years old. On that Monday, he asked her to go and dispose of her faeces in a potty in a latrine at the backyard of the house. But the area was slippery and the girl fell, splashing the faeces on the floor. “The father became angry and got a hot iron. He began to beat her with the hot surface of the iron until the girl’s face became swollen. We tried to caution him, but he would not listen. That was how the matter got to the police.” It was learnt that the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had directed that the case be transferred from the Ikotun Police Division to the Gender Unit at the command headquarters, Ikeja. A police source told PUNCH Metro that efforts were on to locate the mother of the victim after two years of separation from Idowu. The Lagos State Police Command on Wednesday paraded a self-confessed leader of the Eiye Confraternity, Ibrahim Balogun, akaSmall Jpron, for allegedly killing five persons during different cult wars. PUNCH Metro learnt that 29-year-old Small Jpron was arrested on Saturday by detectives attached to the Alade Police Division on Apata Street in the Somolu area of the state. It was gathered that Small Jpron was arrested after some suspected cultists attacked the area on Saturday and the suspect came out with his boys for a reprisal. Our correspondent gathered that Small Jpronallegedly organised a gang which set a house ablaze in January 2016 on Oshinfolarin Street, Bariga, during which a 65-year-old woman, Adejoke Adefuye, was burnt to death. A police source told our correspondent thatSmall Jpron had been declared wanted for five murder cases in the Somolu and Bariga areas in 2016. Speaking while being paraded at the command headquarters, Ikeja, on Wednesday, the suspect said he joined the cult to avenge the murder of his friend in 2009 by suspected Aye Confraternity members. He said, “I am an Eiye cult leader. I joined the cult in 2009. The reason for my joining was to avenge the death of a close friend, Sunday Folorunsho, aka Small Biscuits. “It was the Aye cult members who killed him. So, the Eiye faction approached me and said I should join them and they would help me fish out the people who killed my friend. I had a lot of boys working for me. I have killed three persons among whom were Femi Wiper and Lekan Akon. “I cut them with knives. I shot some other victims. They were killed in the Somolu and Bariga areas. It was in the evening that Femi Wiper was killed. We were going out for a carnival during the Easter period on Alade Street in the Somolu area when a fight broke out. He was the one who first pointed a gun at me and my boys hacked him to death.” The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, said Small Jpron had been declared wanted by the police for multiple cases of murder. He added that the suspect was an ex-convict. He said, “Earlier this year, there were major cult clashes, where criminal elements in the Somolu and Bariga areas engaged one another in a war of supremacy culminating in the deaths of some persons. “The gang, led by Small Jpron, also set ablaze a house in the Pedro area in which an elderly woman was burnt to death. The suspect was the one who led the cult gang war. He is a known criminal in the Somolu area. “He has multiple cases of murder and armed robbery which he has confessed to. Through him, we will look for other members of the gang who turned Pedro and Somolu areas into theatres of war.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/lagos-cult-leader-small-jpron-arrested.html?m=0

PUNCH Metro learnt that Ekue used a rope to hang himself by the rod of a ceiling fan in his apartment on Oki Lane around 8pm on Monday. 66-year-old company driver commits suicide over unpaid salaries It was learnt that the victim, who worked as a driver for a paint company in Lagos State, killed himself over the failure of the company to pay his five-month salaries. Our correspondent gathered that the victim had been facing tough times since April 2016, when he stopped going to the company, whose name was not disclosed by his family members. The deceased, who earned N30,000 per month, reportedly became frustrated when feeding became difficult for him. Our correspondent learnt that his only son, identified simply as IK, a salesman, had been supporting him with his meagre wages. A resident, Simon Davies, told PUNCH Metroon Tuesday during a visit to the area that IK had gone to buy food for the father when the incident happened. He said, “His son had gone to buy food for him that evening. But when he returned, he saw his father’s body dangling from a rope and he raised the alarm. People went into the room to help rush him to a hospital, but he died. “The main cause of the incident is the non-payment of his salaries by a paint company he worked for as a driver. I learnt he earned N30,000 monthly and the company owed him five months’ salaries. He stopped going there in April when the arrears were not paid. Since then, his son had been feeding him with the little he earns at a boutique where he works.” Another resident, who identified herself simply as Ruth, said the death of Ekue’s wife two years ago compounded his frustration. “He had been lonely since he stopped going to work. His only son, who should have been with him, had to run around to provide food for him. Aside that, his wife died about two years ago which really shook him. I was shocked when I heard he committed suicide yesterday (Monday),” she added. A resident, Gafar Kolawole, said the police from the Anthony division came to remove the corpse and had deposited it in a mortuary. Relatives of the deceased declined comments when our correspondent approached them to verify the cause of the death. However, one of them, who did not give his name, said, “The police came and took an account of what happened. They should be in a position to tell you. This is sad news and you should not disturb us with questions, especially his son. You can rely on the information you got from people who are aware of the incident.” The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the suicide, adding that Ekue’s corpse had been deposited in a morgue for autopsy. She said, “One John Ekue allegedly hanged himself with a rope tied to the ceiling fan in his room. Detectives visited, examined and photographed the scene. The corpse was removed and deposited in a morgue for autopsy.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/66-year-old-company-driver-commits.html?m=0 |
A former Chairman, Senate Committee on Water Resources, Senator Joseph Waku, on Tuesday in Kaduna asked President Muhammadu Buhari to either probe former President Olusegun Obasanjo or forget about his current war against corruption in the country. He also predicted that without Buhari, the governing party was bound to lose the 2019 general election. He said Nigerians would not take President Buhari’s fight against corruption seriously if Obasanjo was left untouched by anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. The 4th Republic Senator said he had already told the President that Nigerians would only take his ant-corruption seriously if the likes of Obasanjo, whom he claimed introduced corruption to Nigeria, were probed. Waku, in an interview with journalists on the sideline at the ongoing Annual General Assembly of the Arewa Consultative Forum on Tuesday in Kaduna, said, “Look, I am 70 years old now and have been in this game for more than 50 years. “Therefore, there is no way I can just look at some totality of what people are saying about corruptionand believe it as it has been reported to me. If I have an investigating mechanism, I know that this accusation is real obviously. “I have access to authority. I have access to Mr. President. I told Mr. President that this corruption probe of past regimes, if you don’t probe Obasanjo, then you haven’t done anything yet. Corruption in Nigeria was introduced by Obasanjo.” The APC chieftain insisted that without Buhari, the ruling party would lose the 2019 general election. He said the party won the last election because most of the politicians on the platform of the APC rode on Buhari’s honesty to win the 2015 election, noting that the party wouldn’t have won that election in the first place. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/probe-obasanjo-or-forget-anti.html?m=0

THE Minister of Power, Workers and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, said on Monday that it was wrong for the legislature to unilaterally seek to increase the national budget. Fashola, who made this remark as one of the panelists at the annual conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, stated that the major responsibility of the legislature was representation. He maintained that since the federal lawmakers had no powers to collect tax, they did not possess the right to unilaterally increase the budget. The minister, who spoke on the topic, ‘The Role of the Legislature and Executive in the Budget Process,” expressed the need for collaboration between the two arms of government in the budget process and added that this would help to avoid friction. Fashola said, “I like to say that it is not appropriate for parliament to unilaterally seek to increase the budget because they do not collect taxes. “I think there should be collaboration between the executive and the legislature in the budgeting process. In this process, clear lines should be drawn because compromise is better achieved where all parties know their rights.” The minister, however, added that all parties must respect the rights of the other in embracing such collaboration, even as he urged lawmakers to nominate constituency projects that would be to the benefits of their constituencies as against their personal interests. “If we say constituency projects, we must make sure they are not senators’ projects. Even if they were nominated by senator or state lawmakers, they must be the projects that the constituency own. “In cases where the lawmaker who started the project is not returned, the person who takes over should continue the project. This is not the case we have. “What we see are new legislators coming and starting their own projects. In my ministry, we have over 200 constituency projects with no parentage. I have said we must finish these projects, but people are nominating new ones. I said we must finish the old ones,” Fashola said. The minister advised the lawmakers to resolve their disagreements based on party affiliations and work for the common good of the country. In his remark, the former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Chibudom Nwuche, called for a joint project office between the executive and the legislature in the development of budgets. Explaining that such measures would save the system from friction, Nwuche maintained that constituency projects should be in the interest of Nigerians. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/lawmakers-dont-have-right-to-increase.html?m=0

Renowned Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie has blasted critics who threw shades at her for not spacing the birth of her children. The mother of three who was reported to be pregnant for her fourth child, said those criticizing her have nothing to do with their lives. In a chat with Vanguard, the busty thespian said her fans should expect baby number four soon, since most of them had nothing better to do than to watch her stomach. She said, “I feel that when you haven’t gone through life and you don’t have a bearing in life, that’s when you see certain decisions as unreasonable. Most of these people who make these statements have not even realized what they want to do with their lives yet. They should expect baby number four from me. “I had planned my life right from when I was growing up. I arranged my life the way I wanted it to go. And that is why even when I was at the peak of my career and marriage came, I grabbed it because I know age keeps going and time waits for no one. “It means that I can have all of my four kids and then still get back to shape and come back to what I love to do. So I am not going to say things like, ‘I don’t want to have kids yet’ or ‘I am not going to get married and I want to keep acting because the young shall always grow’, you are not going to be number one forever. That is why when it is time for you to do something, you do it. “Yoruba will always say in their prayers that when the time for a child to talk has come, by the grace of God, she will talk. When it’s time to go to school, he will go to school. That’s what I’m trying to do. I want to define my life in a way my daughter will want to define her own life,” the comic actress said, noting that criticisms don’t get to her. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/get-busy-with-your-life-i-will-have.html?m=0

A bizarre scenario played out yesterday at the Okigwe Road roundabout, Owerri, as a man slumped and died while having a heated argument with his friend. The deceased, whose name could not be ascertained before press time, was said to be a block moulder and hailed from one of the communities in Ngor Okpala local council area of Imo State. According to a man who claimed to have witnessed the entire incident said, the duo were arguing over a possible business transaction. “From the way the argument flowed, they obviously had a transaction that probably went sour. There were no exchange of blows and I can’t remember hearing any of them threatening the other, but one of them slumped and died”, the man recounted with shock. Vanguard gathered that shortly after the deceased slumped, some sympathisers rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, where he was confirmed dead on arrival. However, it was also gathered that the dead man’s friend, who was identified as Dozie Eze, from Orodo, Mbaitoli local government area of the state, is said to be answering a few questions at the State Police Headquarters, Owerri. Speaking to no one in particular, a relation of the suspect, Mr. Iyke Eze, fumed that “Dozie is being persecuted for no just cause, especially as those at the scene of the incident have testified that there was no exchange of blows before the man slumped and died”. When contacted on his mobile line, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Andrew Enwerem, confirmed the incident. “Yes, such a thing happened. However the report available to me is that somebody slumped and later died”, Enwerem said. Continuing, the PPRO said that it has not been established that there was a fight or verbal threat before the deceased slumped and died. When asked to confirm if anybody was detained in connection with the incident, the PPRO said he was not aware of such a development. “I am not aware that anybody was detained in connection with the incident. There are necessary indices that must be established before the police detains any suspect. The instant case can’t be one of them”, Enwerem explained. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/man-slumps-and-dies-while-arguing-with.html?m=0 |
The Lagos State Police Command has begun investigation into the death of two newborn babies, whose corpses were recovered from a canal beside a filling station in the Ajangbadi area of the state. PUNCH Metro learnt that the two boys, suspected to be twins, were left in the canal on Friday. A crowd of residents, who were drawn to the scene, was reported to have started taking snapshots of the babies before the arrival of policemen from the Ilemba Hausa division. After seeing the corpses, the policemen were said to have called the attention of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, which removed and deposited them in a mortuary. A police source wondered why the residents did not act immediately they saw the babies, adding that the twins were dead by the time the police arrived. He said, “A resident alerted us to the scene. By the time we got there, the babies were already dead. There was a crowd of onlookers, some of them were taking snapshots. It is probable that the babies were dropped by their mother for reasons best known to her. “We searched all the communities to see if we could find her or anyone who could volunteer any useful information, but we couldn’t. It is sad that while many women are looking for children, someone could take two baby boys and dump them in a canal.” When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, confirmed the incident, adding that investigation was ongoing. She said, “We got the information around 1pm on Friday and our operatives attached to the Ilemba Hausa division went there and saw the corpses of the infants in the canal. We discovered that they were two corpses of newborn male babies, packed in a polythene bag and abandoned by the canal by unknown person(s). “The corpses were removed and deposited at the Badagry General Hospital morgue for autopsy. But effort is on to track down the perpetrator(s) of the act.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/newborn-twin-boys-dumped-in-lagos-canal.html?m=0 |
A woman, Fatima Williams, and her neighbour, Waliu Yusuf, have been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly brutalising a 16-year-old girl, identified only as Kemi, with a hot iron and electric cables. Our correspondent learnt that the Kemi was brought from Cotonou, Benin Republic. She had been reportedly living with Williams, popularly called Alhaja, since January 2016 as a housemaid. Williams’ apartment is on Soji Adepegba Close, Allen Avenue, Ikeja. It was gathered that the victim was allegedly tortured for not sweeping Williams’ compound last Thursday. PUNCH Metro learnt that a resident informed the police and the suspects were arrested by the Ikeja Police Division on Friday, August 12. A police source told our correspondent that the teenager had been admitted to the Police Cottage Hospital, Ikeja. Kemi, who spoke with our correspondent in Yoruba, said, “On that day, Alhaja instructed me to sweep the compound. She also asked me to clean the windows and wash some clothes. “I started with the washing and she went out. When she returned, she was angry that I had not swept the compound. She called the man to beat me up.” Alhaja, a mother of four children who hails from Kwara State, said she got Yusuf to beat the girl for her obstinacy, adding that Kemi’s stubbornness had increased her (Alhaja’s) blood pressure. She said, “The girl’s brother brought her to me on January 10, 2016. She usually stole things from the house. I kept reporting her to her brother and even asked him to come to pick her, but he refused; I got tired of the girl. “She continued her rudeness and messed up the whole house. She also urinated on the bed. During all this trouble, my blood pressure got high. I had to use a BP machine in the house. I called and spoke to her like a child, but she would not listen. I usually gave her the food I ate. I gave her brother N40,000 in January. “When she got me angry on that day, I was tired of beating her and I called Waliu (Yusuf). He was using an iron. As he beat her, she held his clothes and the iron injured her.” Twenty-five-year-old Yusuf said he had wanted to scare the victim with the iron when it injured her. He said, “The girl went into the kitchen and brought an insecticide, threatening to kill herself. I then tried to take the substance away from her. She began to struggle with me. I started flogging her and she held on to my clothes. “Meanwhile, I was ironing some clothes that time. I used the iron to scare her to leave my clothes. That was how the iron fell on her. I only wanted to scare her away.” The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters, Ikeja, said they would be charged to court at the end of investigation. He said, “This is a case of child trafficking, child labour and child abuse as well as assault occasioning harm. The suspects will be arraigned in a court of law.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/woman-neighbour-torture-16-year-old.html?m=0

It encourages greater intimacy Apart from making sleeping next to a loved one exciting, our naked body releases oxytocin, often referred to as the “love hormone.” A 2009 study published by the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Uppsala, Sweden, says “Oxytocin reduces blood pressure, cortisol levels and helps to reduce stress. This hormone does not only help relationship, but also your health! It can keep you cool One way to be cool during sleep is to abandon cloths. It may help relieve insomnia According to Dr. Cameron Van den Heuvel of University of South Australia’s Centre for Sleep Research, regulating sleep temperature may bring some relief to sufferers of insomnia. “Studies of sleep onset insomniacs show that they consistently have a warmer core body temperature immediately before initiating sleep, when compared with normal healthy adults. This results in a state of heightened arousal that prevents them from falling asleep when they go to bed, probably because they have to wait for their bodies to lose the heat that’s keeping them awake. We’re only talking about a half to one degree but that small temperature change can result in significant differences in arousal between insomniacs and people without sleeping problems.” The implication is that sleeping naked relieves insomia. It can help relieve stress Sleeping naked can relieve stress because it lowers cortisol levels. Cortisol is a hormone commonly referred to as the “stress hormone,” and when levels are chronically spiked, health problems can arise, such as a propensity towards high blood pressure, weight gain, and a compromised immune system. It can make you look and feel young During sleep a variety of growth hormones, as well as anti-aging hormones such as melatonin, are released. These hormones serve to keep us looking and feeling young. To encourage the optimal release of these growth hormones, we need to get those seven to eight hours of sleep. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/five-reasons-you-should-sleep-naked.html?m=0 |
French superstar Paul Pogba on Tuesday completed a sensational return to Manchester United from Juventus for a reported world record fee. United said Pogba had signed a five-year contract but did not give the cost which British media have put at 89 million pounds ($116.4 million, 105 million euros), not including agent’s fee. That would see the 23-year-old eclipse the 85 million pounds Real Madrid paid Tottenham Hotspur for Gareth Bale in 2013. “This is the right club for me to achieve everything I hope to in the game,” said Pogba. Pogba moved to Italy when United let him go for a nominal fee after his contract expired in 2012. “I am delighted to rejoin United. It has always been a club with a special place in my heart and I am really looking forward to working with Jose Mourinho,” added Pogba. United manager Mourinho has been tasked with bringing back the glory days to the 20-time English champions after three lean years since Alex Ferguson’s retirement. – Pogba the key -And the former Chelsea boss believes Pogba can inspire United’s revival. “He has the chance to be at the heart of this club for the next decade and beyond,” said Mourinho. “Paul is one of the best players in the world and will be a key part of the United team I want to build here for the future. He is quick, strong, scores goals and reads the game better than many players much older than he is.” Pogba made just seven appearances during his previous spell at the club as a teenager, but returns as one of the world’s most famous players after winning four consecutive Serie A titles and leading France to the Euro 2016 final. “Thanks @juventusfc and all Juventini. Goodbye means nothing, it is the time we spent together that matters,” Pogba posted on his official Twitter account. It is the first time since now Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane joined the Spanish giants as a player in 2000 from Juventus that Madrid haven’t got their hands on the world’s most expensive player having also bagged Cristiano Ronaldo from United in 2009 for a record fee. United brought the long-running transfer saga to an end in the early hours of the morning UK time. The reported fee does not include agent’s fees. The transfer had stalled for weeks over how the two clubs would share the sizeable payout to Pogba’s representative Mino Raiola. And the huge cash outlay will lead to questions over how Ferguson allowed Pogba to slip out of United’s hands four years ago over differences with Raiola. In his 2015 book ‘Leading’, Ferguson described his first meeting with Raiola as “a fiasco”. “He and I were like oil and water,” Ferguson wrote. “From then on, our goose was cooked because Raiola had been able to ingratiate himself with Paul and his family and the player signed with Juventus.” Raiola, who also represents two of United’s other new signings, Armenian playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan and star Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is set to make millions from the deal. Mourinho insisted United’s financial muscle should be a source of pride not embarrassment. “When other people break records, I don’t think it’s a reason to be sad. I think it’s a reason to be proud with the dimension of a club that can do that and can attract players of this dimension.” However, the Portuguese boss has hinted Pogba’s arrival will signal the end of United’s spending spree. “Our fundamental market is 75 percent done,” he said during United’s pre-season tour of China. “When we sign one midfield player that crucial work will be done.” Mourinho’s reign got off to a successful start on Sunday as Ibrahimovic scored the winner in a 2-1 victory over Premier League champions Leicester City in the Community Shield. Controversial Nigerian entertainer, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly called Charlyboy has waded into the much debated counsel by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor E.A Adeboye to young men and women concerning marriage. The Areafada who took to his twitter handle @Areafada1 to counter the claims made by Pastor Adeboye, said it was wrong for Adeboye to begin to judge others as many look up to him. It would be recalled that Pastor Adeboye in a message to young men and women said: “Marry a prayer warrior! Don’t marry any girl who cannot pray for one hour non-stop. Don’t marry a girl who is lazy! If she is lazy when she is single, what will happen if she is married?” His advice to women was: “Don’t marry a man who has no job. Before God gave Adam Eve, he gave him a job. He said, ‘This is the garden, keep it.’ So when anybody comes to you and say, ‘Sister, thus saith the Lord, you are going to be the star in my firmament,’ ask him — ‘What is your job?’” Reacting to this, Charlyboy said, “I suspect that the good pastors yarns tells me that he is a man suspended in time, between old and new school. “Don’t get it twisted, I flow with his definition of a good woman. “From his statement I see that the obvious way to his heart is through his stomach and of cause through prayers. Good, No wahala. “However our amiable pastor rubs it in when he starts to yarn Akpata, “Marry a warrior, if a girl cannot pray for one hour, don’t marry her. Don’t marry a girl who is lazy, who cannot cook. She needs to know how to do chores and cook because you cannot afford to eat out at all times. “Are you Serious? “So if my wife to be can’t rant, chant, shout and generally carry on as a prayer warrior, praying for a whole hour, the woman doesn’t deserve a wife status. Abi? “Oga pastor, that one na missyarn. Over praying does not make one a better husband or wife, because the world especially Naija is filled with Fake people and “Fakest” pastors. “Does a man having a job guarantee that he will make a good husband? Does a woman knowing how to cook guarantee she will make a good wife? “Ok I get it, The Nigerian god has an ear infection, so we must shout and pray for hours because that’s the only way he may listen to our prayers, right? I know that a man is supposed to marry a helper and not a cook or a house girl. By the way, is anything wrong with encouraging your young male congregation to learn how to cook and do chores too. “Do not marry a worldly lady” Is it about being materialistic or just being fashionable, looking nice. I guess in your book we can’t be a good Christian if we got swag and we are trendy. Judge not pastor. We must all not look like Deeper Life people to have a personal relationship with God. By the way, if you want to start writing your own commandment you may as well write your own version of the bible for your congregation. “Being married should never define a man or a woman. Marriage in a few years anyways, will be out of fashion. Being married is only nice if we are lucky to pick a partner who will be our friend, if not, that maybe hell on earth. All of us must not get married if our threshold for nonsense and garbage is low. The world is obviously changing and we are no longer in the 60s. Who wants to be suffering and smiling. “So Pastor Adeboye, watch your yarns because a lot of people look up to you.” http://jahelastic..be/2016/08/do-not-judge-charlyboy-reacts-to-pastor.html?m=0

A Malaysian man who raped a 14-year-old girl avoided being thrown in jail after he married the young victim, sparking calls from angry activists for legal reforms on Thursday. A court in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on Borneo island ruled last week there was “no necessity to proceed further with this case” following evidence that the two were married, the Borneo Post news website reported. The victim, now 15, was allegedly raped twice by Ahmad Syukri Yusuf, in his twenties, last year. Rape in Malaysia carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison and whipping. Activists say such cases are not uncommon in the conservative Muslim-majority country, where sometimes victims’ families would rather a girl marry her rapist instead of her name being tarnished in court. But this loophole in the system can give the wrong signal to others that there are no serious consequences for rape, they say. “Over the years we have handled many such cases where the man marries the victim and then divorces her and pays some money to her family,” Aegile Fernandez of Tenaganita, an NGO in Malaysia, told AFP. “A rape is a rape. There needs to be better education on this,” she added, calling the case an “injustice”. In 2013, a man who raped a 12-year-old girl avoided prison after he married her, provoking an outcry among rights groups. However, the following year a high court sentenced the father-of-four to 12 years in jail. Opposition politician Teo Nie Ching also criticised the latest court ruling. “This is not the first time that a rapist [has been] allowed to marry his underage victim, and this is surely not going to be the last,” she was quoted as saying by the Malaysiakini news website. Child marriages are not uncommon in the Southeast Asian country. Girls below the age of 16 must obtain the permission of Islamic courts — who regulate civil matters for Muslims — but activists say such permission is too readily granted. Over the years there have been renewed calls for the government to outlaw child marriages. AFP http://jahelastic..be/2016/08/rapist-marries-14-year-old-victim-to.html?m=0

Former President, Goodluck Jonathan, has disclosed that he was in touch with the Niger Delta militants to ensure that there is peace in the oil rich region. He made this disclosure on Wednesday when he visited President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential villa, Abuja. Recall that the militant group had few days ago stated that it backed out of its plan to declare Niger Delta Republic following the intervention of Jonathan and other leaders from the community. Addressing State House Correspondents shortly after the meeting which lasted for 20 minutes, Jonathan said it was appropriate for him and traditional rulers in the area to mediate in the matter. According to him, “It’s not just about me but about all the traditional rulers, elders and opinion leaders that are of the Ijaw ethnic nationality. We have been in touch to see that peace reigns in the country. Those of you that have followed my talks when I was here, my emphasis is that we need a United Nigeria and I always emphasize that Nigeria is great not just about the oil. “So many countries produce more oil than Nigeria nobody notices them. We are great because of our size, the human resources we have, the diversity we have, if we fragmentize the country into small components, we will be forgotten by the World. “That has been my focal position and without peace there cannot be development anywhere in the world. We are all working collectively to see that issues are resolved.” Speaking on his mission to the Villa, he said he was there to brief President Buhari on his emergence as the leader of African Union, AU elections monitoring team to Zambia. “You asked why I came to see the President today, one key thing is that having been a head of a government, a former president you become a state property. That’s the privilege you have but every privilege has its corresponding responsibility, and once you become a state property, most of your international engagement, that has to do with public addresses and some international assignment becomes a national assignment, you brief the President. “Even when I was here the former presidents used to do that and see me. I have been coming. Most times, I come in the night that’s why you don’t see me. I came to brief the President about some of my engagements. As you are aware, I will be leading the AU elections monitoring team to Zambia. I came to brief the President about some of these external engagements. It is the tradition”, he said. “I don’t want to talk about that one because there are too many cases that are in court. It will not be fair to make comments. I will talk at the appropriate time when most of these things are resolved”, he said. http://jahelastic..be/2016/08/i-am-in-touch-with-niger-delta.html?m=0

Is money spiritual and worthy enough to pray for? Learn what the Bible says about it and how you can pray for financial stability, employment and prosperity. 1. Pray for your daily needs. Jesus in His famous prayer said: “Give us this day our daily bread.” (Matthew 6:11) At the end of the same chapter He continues: “For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:32-33) And He actually promises to provide us with what we need for life. So, you can use these Scriptures to build up your faith and come to the Lord in prayer for the money to meet your daily needs. 2. Pray for prosperity. Prosperity is when you have more than enough. Having enough is good. Your needs are met and you can live. But prosperity is better. God is the God of abundance. It’s His nature. He gives abundantly: “And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers…”(Deuteronomy 30:9) Take Him as your source, follow His Word and prosper! 3. Pray to break the debt. Debt is the curse. You cannot be happy and free, when you know you owe something. That’s not the will of God for His children. You can use this Scripture to pray: “For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee." (Deuteronomy 15:6) However, along with it pray for wisdom, because most of the times we are the ones to blame for foolish behavior. We get ourselves into debt through our lusts. 4. Pray for growth. You can go from glory to glory even in your finances. So, pray to the Lord to give you knowledge and wisdom: “For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.” (Proverbs 8:11) The best investment is made inside. You grow and your abilities to earn and prosper increase, too. 5. Pray for supernatural provisions. They say: “Where God guides, He provides!” And that is true. At times we need much more than we can do or have on our own to fulfill the will of God. He opens the doors and provides for us supernaturally to do the impossible. Jesus multiplied the loaves of bread and fish to feed 5000 people. He has more than enough for those who seek, ask and get ready to do His will. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/prayers-for-money-and-financial-freedom.html?m=0

Premier League champions Leicester City signed teenage winger Bartosz Kapustka from Polish club Cracovia for a reported £7.5 million on Wednesday. Kapustka agreed a five-year contract with Leicester after catching the eye of Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri with his international performances for Poland over the last year. The 19-year-old has linked up with his new teammates in Stockholm ahead of Leicester’s International Champions Cup friendly against Barcelona on Wednesday. “Leicester City Football Club is delighted to confirm the signing of Poland winger Bartosz Kapustka, subject to FA, Premier League and international clearance,” read a statement on Leicester’s website. Kapustka made more than 60 appearances for Cracovia, with his impressive form leading to a debut for Poland in September 2015. He was part of Poland’s Euro 2016 campaign and gave an outstanding display in their victory over Northern Ireland. As Leicester gear up for their title defence, Kapustka is Ranieri’s fifth signing of the transfer window following the arrivals of Luis Hernandez, Ron-Robert Zieler, Nampalys Mendy and Ahmed Musa. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/leicester-sign-poland-winger-bartosz.html?m=0

The ongoing annual convention of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, on Tuesday, received enormous publicity. The publicity, however, came in a controversial manner. The General Overseer of the church, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, in a message on marriage, stirred a widespread debate on social media, with thousands taking to the Internet to protest or support his positions on the categories of people Christians should not marry. Adeboye, who is fondly called Daddy G.O. by members of his church, advised a congregation of bachelors and spinsters at the convention to avoid marrying certain individuals in order to enjoy their marriages. Videos of the teachings, which were uploaded on different social media sites, received huge ‘share’. The pastor urged bachelors to shun ladies who could not pray “non-stop” for at least an hour. He also advised them against marrying “lazy” women as well as those who could not cook. The cooking aspect particularly caught the attention of feminists. They took protested the pastor’s remark, saying they were not supposed to be consigned to kitchens just because they were women. Adeboye also warned ladies against accepting marriage proposals by “jobless” bachelors. He said those who could not earn incomes should not marry. A social media activist, Asuquo Ulo, said the teachings were part of unacceptable thinking that characterised the age. The tweeter disagreed with the cleric’s position, saying “marriage is really beyond jobs, cooking and prayers”. As far as Chinye Onwordi, a Twitter user, is concerned, Adeboye’s advice had solved a persisting puzzle on the social media. “Whether Nigerian ladies agree to cook when they marry or not, Adeboye has spoken the truth nobody should shy away from,” he tweeted. One Ahmed Isah also wrote, “Adeboye, we thank you for ending this long debate. You spoke from a spiritual realm, not as a mere mortal.” As of Tuesday evening, many sites had unveiled online polls with a view to assessing the acceptability of Adeboye’s marriage ‘prescriptions’. In one of the videos, Adeboye advised, “Marry a prayer warrior! Don’t marry any girl who cannot pray for one hour non-stop. Don’t marry a girl who is lazy! If she is lazy when she is single, what will happen if she is married?” In another one, he warned, “Don’t marry a man who has no job. Before God gave Adam Eve, he gave him a job. He said, ‘This is the garden, keep it.’ So when anybody comes to you and say, ‘Sister, thus saith the Lord, you are going to be the star in my firmament,’ ask him — ‘What is your job?’ “If he tells you he is a contractor, ask him to show you evidence of all the contracts he has done because the contract he is talking about is you. He wants to live off you. “Don’t be a fool. If he hasn’t got a steady income, don’t marry him. A man is to provide for the house and not the other way round. If he has no income, he should not marry. Those who do not work should not eat. And if they can’t eat, they can’t even marry.” Adeboye trended widely on social media platforms as the issues he raised were scrutinised by his fans and foes. The videos became the toast of members of the online community. Adeboye’s popularity rating, by online metrics, soared. He also enjoyed a huge Google search, as bloggers dissected thousands of comments for catchy headlines for their posts. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/how-adeboyes-marriage-teachings-caused.html?m=0

The Nigerian Football Federation has unveiled a new kit for the national football team. According to the NFF, the team will take to the pitch this week in the new kit, designed by Nike featuring Dri-FIT technology. “The home kit is a solid green, with white ribbing around the back of the modern crewneck collar,” it said. “In keeping true to the national colours of Nigeria, the new away kit is white with a green stripe that runs the length of the sides of shirt and shorts, and a green stripe along the back of the collar.” Explaining the technology used for the kit, the NFF said the Nike Dri-FIT technology “draws sweat away from the body to the exterior of the shirts and shorts, where it quickly evaporates”. It added, “This allows players to perform at their best by remaining cooler, drier and more comfortable. “The laser-cut ventilation holes and mesh panels in the key areas of the kit are designed to improve performance by increasing air circulation and helping regulate players’ temperatures.” http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/08/nff-unveils-nigerias-new-kit.html?m=0

Four years ago, Nigeria featured in the weightlifting event of the London 2012 Olympic Games with two weightlifters and returned no laurel. The same was the case after the weightlifters outing at Being 2008 Olympics where Nigeria won only four medals overall but none in weightlifting. With two days to the start of the 2016 edition of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Nigeria’s only representative in weightlifting, Maryam Usman, 26, is upbeat that this time, she will win a medal. Nigeria will be represented by only Usman in Rio because she is the only weightlifter that amassed the necessary points to qualify for the Games. The development has easily shown the country’s shoddy preparations for international events. It exposed the situation where the nation failed to participate in the many qualifiers where the athletes could have secured the vital points to berth at the Olympics. But apparently undaunted, Usman says that the poor preparation for the Rio Olympics is now “a challenge that will spur me to clinch a medal for the nation’’. She told NAN on Tuesday that she has been training on her own and didn’t rely on programmes conducted at the national camp. The lifter, who will be making her third Olympic appearance, said she had the ability and confidence to register her name on the Games’ medals log. “The preparation is nothing to talk about; but I am not discouraged, rather I’m taking it up as a challenge to increase the tempo of my training outside the national camp. “We have been in camp for the past two months training seriously, this will enable me to win a medal this time around and I know that almighty God will support my effort. “I was in Beijing and London Olympics in 2008 and 2012 respectively, but couldn’t win any medal. “However, this is another opportunity for me and I must make the difference this time. “Thank God for exposure at previous Olympics, continental championships and series of trials that has helped me to garner the basic points that earned me this Olympic ticket,’’ she said. George Aluo, the Public Relations Officer, Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF), said Usman, qualified for the Games after her brilliant performances at the trials in Yaoundé, Cameroun in May. “Usman is the only one for weightlifting event in Rio; she did excellently well at the qualifiers which saw her through and she was able to secure the Olympic ticket,’’ he said. Last Monday, popular actress, Toyin Aimakhu posted a video on her Instagram asking people to help raise fund for cancer patient, Mayowa Ahmed. She contacted some of her colleagues and they spoke with one voice. They were all over social media begging people to donate whatever they could. In a rare display of compassion and solidarity by Nigerians, over N32m was raised. However, the joy that followed was cut short when news filtered into town that the fundraising was not transparent leading to the involvement of the police. Some of the celebs involved spoke to Sunday Scoop and said the controversy would not stop them from raising money for others in similar situation. Actress Kate Henshaw, said the development would not stop her from helping those in need. “I will continue raise money for those who need it. I am dealing with a case already and I will not stop. Can one apple spoil the whole bunch? For instance, a case I am dealing with, Michael (another Nigerian Kate helped raised money for), we are transparent and holding a press conference to keep people updated,” she said. Another actress, Mercy Aigbe, said she would not desist from assisting those in need adding that such a process must be transparent. “It won’t stop me from helping others. As known faces, we need to be careful before we get involved in anything. We need to do a background check and other necessary things. People should not be in a hurry to castigate Toyin because she had no sinister motive when she decided to champion the cause. I got involved because of her; I don’t know what the true state is now. It is just unfortunate, but it won’t stop me from helping people when I can,” she said. http://jahelastic..com.ng/2016/07/savemayowa-we-wont-stop-raising-money.html?m=0
