Religion / Fr. George Ehusani Exposes The Catholic Church by Jahlivesforever: 12:33pm On Sep 25, 2022 |
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH: A Critique of Fundraising Modalities in the Nigerian Church Today Paper presented at the 2022 General Assembly of the Archdiocese of Abuja, Sept 23, 2022 By Rev. Fr. George Ehusani, Executive Director, Lux Terra Leadership Foundation After the major scandal and embarrassment that attended the unfortunate massacre of 13 worshipers inside the St. Philip's Church, Ozubulu, Anambra State, on Sunday August 6, 2017, I addressed a memorandum to the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria, pleading that they consider it a matter of priority to come up urgently with clear guidelines on what manner of fundraising can be considered suitable in our Churches, and especially within liturgical and paraliturgical settings. It was the case of a young man with no known pedigree, no known qualifications, no antecedents in business, etc; but who came back home from South Africa, throwing money around, single-handedly building a Church and dedicating it with fanfare, and no one asking any questions. It was alleged that many among the clergy and laity in that part of the country knew that the young man could not have made such stupendous wealth in any legitimate manner, and that many even knew for sure that he was a drug baron. Yet, the Ozubulu case of an alleged drug baron who single-handedly built a Catholic Church and had it dedicated with fanfare, is not an isolated one. These days, rogue public office holders, known treasury looters, corrupt civil servants, and kidnappers, are now celebrated in our Churches, considered Pillars of the Church, decorated with Knighthood, made Patrons of pious societies, and are regularly encouraged to come up to the sanctuary, told to mount the pulpit and given the microphone to address the congregation at Sunday masses, at funeral masses, at wedding ceremonies, and at the anniversaries of priests and religious, etc., in anticipation of some donation towards our Church building or mission house projects. These days some (so-called powerful) priests have made themselves expert fundraisers, going from diocese to diocese, getting invited across the country to preside over harvest thanksgiving and bazaar, or some other fundraising events, and it is even alleged that some of these fundraiser priests do request for a percentage of the funds they help to raise - using the most unorthodox, irreverent, distasteful, if not nauseating and perhaps sacrilegious methods. Not long ago, after reading the Gospel passage of the Widow’s Mite, I shared my honest impressions with those gathered in Church about the conduct of harvest thanksgivings and bazaars, as well as the conduct of fundraising in general in our Churches these days. I told them how embarrassed and distressed I have become with all the cumbersome announcements and elaborate arrangements that precede harvest each year, whereby for many weeks or even months, precious worship and religious instruction time is expended on preparing Church members for the harvest thanksgiving and bazaar day, and the largest billboards and banners displayed in the parish are often those of the annual harvest, as if annual harvests have become the most central or the most critical liturgical celebrations of the year. In the process however, the sanctity, integrity and solemnity of the traditional Catholic liturgy are often violated, and the vanity and vainglory of the people are not only accommodated but celebrated as if they have become Christian virtues - and all these, just so that more money could be raised for God’s work. Sometimes secular comedians as well as fans of such football clubs as Man United and Chelsea or AC Milan, are brought in to ginger the Church members, so they may contribute more. I hear that at harvest time especially, the ingenuity and creativity of some parish priests and harvest committee chairpersons have reached the extent that sundry articles and food items like apples, oranges, and cakes, are transformed into sacramentals, with specific rituals designed for blessing such items, so parishioners could buy them and consume them or take them home, so they may receive some special blessings or have their problems solved. And it is becoming commonplace that at funeral masses and weddings, the families involved are ambushed, forced, or coerced into announcing a donation for the Church - even while some of them are deeply mourning their departed family member or some of them are in a state of economic distress and indebtedness after expending enormous resources on medical bills for the departed loved one. It is all so sickening, so nauseating, so distressing! My question is: Why do adult Christians have to be pursued, cajoled, harassed, blackmailed, and manipulated, before they donate generously towards the work of God, if indeed we have succeeded in raising adult Christians? Why does an individual have to be called out five or six times during one Mass before he hands over what he has decided to give God for his annual thanksgiving? Perhaps some of us believe that our members do have the money, but that they are not generous enough to willingly donate such money for the Church’s work, so we resort to some of the most base, shameful, ridiculous, and sacrilegious tactics, to extort money from an apparently unwilling people. But does it make sense for us to violate the integrity of the sacred liturgy and to dishonour God, only so that we could raise enough money to do God’s work? Does it make sense to bring into the Church secular entertainers (such as comedians and cultural groups), that have no regard whatsoever for the sanctity and integrity of Catholic Liturgical celebrations, just so that we could motivate the parishioners enough to contribute money to promote our work of evangelisation? True, I consider the carnival-like environment and the vile entertainment tone that harvest thanksgiving and bazaar has taken in many of our Churches these days as simply ridiculous, and therefore should be considered unacceptable, and sanctioned accordingly. I believe that things could be done differently, with better results by way of funds generation, than what we are presently able to generate, with all the dishonourable and indecorous gimmicks that many of us have recently devised to raise funds for our Churches. I believe that we could be more faithful to Christ and to Christian values in our fundraising enterprise and generate more income than we are able to do today with all the unorthodox methods we employ today. And let me say here that Lux Terra Leadership Foundation will be ready sometime in the future to organise a workshop on Effective Christian Fundraising Mechanisms for parish priests and lay leaders from our various parishes. Recall that Jesus says in Matthew 6:1-4, “Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them; for then you have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be praised by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” Recall also the story of the Widow’s mite in Luke 21:1-4, and the powerful lessons on Christian giving contained therein. Since we need money to do God’s work, fundraising in the Christian Church should be considered a missionary task and therefore a holy enterprise. Henry Nouwen the celebrated Retreat Preacher and Mystic reminds us that fundraising in the Church is “proclaiming what we believe in such a way as to offer other people an opportunity to participate with us in our vision and mission.” He says, “Church fundraising “is the opposite of begging.” When we speak to people about raising funds for the Church, we are not saying, “Please, could you help us out because it’s been hard.” Rather, he says we are declaring, “We have a vision that is amazing and exiting. We are inviting you to invest yourself through the resources that God has given you – your energy, your prayers, and your money – in this work to which God has called us.” Nouwen then reminds us that, “to be converted means to experience a deep shift in how we see and think and act.” Finally, St. Paul says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2). St. Paul also admonishes the Ephesians and ourselves to “Be careful then how you live, not as unwise people but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So do not be foolish but understand what the will of the Lord is. (Ephesians 5:16-17). Each time I hear of the abuses that go on today in our Churches in the name of fundraising, I ask myself: What has suddenly gone wrong with us? At what point did we lose the sacred character of our missionary work, that our fundraising enterprise has become such an object of public ridicule? See the shame and embarrassment that the encounter between Chimamanda Adiche and her home parish priest (on the occasion of the burial of her father) brought upon our entire Catholic Church of Nigeria, with the interview granted by L'Osservertore Romano. And Chimamanda’s kind of experience is not an isolated case, but sadly a regular occurrence… See what young people are writing daily on the social media about our increasingly crude fundraising methods that are making some of the most devout, truly generous and promising young people, turn away from active engagement with the Church. I humbly request the Archbishop, the Auxiliary Bishop, the Parish Priests and all the delegates at this General Assembly, to work towards declaring a state of emergency regarding the fundraising protocols in our churches, for I am convinced that no lasting good can come out of the now widespread abuse of the liturgy and the house of God, in the name of fundraising, for enough is enough! Let me end by pointing out that part of the reason for what has become a crazy drive to raise funds in our Church is the excessively speedy (and unchecked) growth and expansion in physical structures, and our inordinate taste for very huge and expensive structures as Church buildings all over the place today. We are attempting to build everywhere in this country, the kind of structures that took over 500 years to come up in Europe. The Archdiocese of Abuja for example is only 41 years old, but within these 41 years, we have engaged in building large Churches in over 150 parishes and pastoral areas. So almost every parish is building either a Church, a Church Hall, or a mission house, and the Archdiocese is building a new Cathedral at the same time. The same is true of many dioceses across the country. This unprecedented expansion of physical structures places enormous burden on the worshippers, and a lot of pressure on the priests and parish councils, at a time of worsening economic fortunes of the Nigerian people. And while this is happening, if we pay sufficient attention, we will realise that this unprecedented physical and structural growth is not matched by a genuine and discernible deepening of the Catholic faith and Catholic pastoral ministry, especially among the young population. You will be worried if you check out the average age of those who regularly attend weekday masses, Sunday evening benedictions, those who go for the sacrament of reconciliation, or those who attend annual parish retreats or such diocesan celebrations as the Chrism Mass and the Cathedraticum. Most of the time the young people – those between ages 15 and 35 cannot be found in any good number at such events. What is more, many of the children of our devout and faithful Catholics, whom we often depend upon to make major contributions towards these projects, have in many cases left the Catholic Church or have abandoned religious practice altogether. While we pursue these faithful Catholic adults for money, we often do not ask after, or show sufficient interest, in the faith commitment of their children. From all indications, many of them are abandoning the faith. So, the question is: For whom are we building all these expansive and expensive structures? Churches are usually built for future generations, not really for the present generation. That is why they are built to last for hundreds of years. But from what we see of our global youth culture, reflected in the social media in our country today, the dire indications are that many of these Church structures could be empty in just 20 or 30 years, if we do not take urgent steps with the grace of God, to turn the tide around. Such is not going to happen, if we keep chasing away the brightest, the most educated, and the most enlightened of our young people away from the Churches, with our embarrassingly crude and shoddy methods of fundraising. We must begin today to do things differently, and we will achieve better results to the glory of God. |

Another way to stay back is through the National interest waiver. Apply, if approved, get a green card. That's what most people here are doing. So if you are interested, as soon as you land... Start doing things to build your CV. The NIW is for those doing something related to 5 sector. Climate change, economics and 3 others. You don't need anyone to sponsor you. You can get it even before the end of your phd. The application is around 7k dollars. Both lawyer fees and others. So be strategic as you land. Start planning yourself. Well, it's better to hire a lawyer. But if you don't want, you can apply yourself. But it's advisable at all. Find a lawyer with good success rate. Some lawyers won't even accept to apply for you if you don't have a strong profile. Cos their reputation is at stake. But its up to you. Hire or not. |
Education / On Schooling And Working In America by Jahlivesforever: 8:46am On Sep 19, 2022 |
F-1 US VISA HOPEFULS: ON SCHOOLING AND WORKING IN AMERICA About schooling or living or working in America, I think a lot of people either live in bubbles or do not have quality information. So, I am going to do this once, and give as much information as I can, based off of my own limited experience and knowledge. Anyone with better information is free to complement or challenge what I say. “I know somebody who know somebody” is not information. That somebody you know might not be telling you the whole story. 1. To enter the US you need a visa, and there are different kinds – student visas (e.g. J-1 and F-1), fiancé visa (to come see your fiancé), spousal visa (for people who are married or coming to get married), H1-B visa (if a US employer employs you), etc. 2. As a student, whether on J-1 or F-1 you are only allowed to work 20 hours max a week, and usually on campus. Of course, there are students who exceed this work limit, usually working off-the-book, under-the-table jobs, which is illegal but not uncommon. 3. When you finish school as a student, if you are on an F-1 visa (usually for students who self-sponsor or are sponsored by the school through research assistantships, teaching assistantships, etc.) you are allowed to do a one-year OPT (optional practical training) – like an internship to practice what you learned in school. NOW LISTEN CAREFULLY. This OPT is usually ONE YEAR for F-1 students, but if you did a STEM course, your OPT can be up to THREE YEARS. 4. So, when you hear someone say they finished school and stayed back in the US, they are either doing their ONE YEAR or THREE YEARS OPT. 5. For students on J-1 (usually those sponsored by a government or some scholarship bodies like the World Bank, Fulbright, etc., which is my visa category), there is also the option of a ONE YEAR Academic Training (AT), which is the equivalent of the OPT that F-1 or self-sponsored students get. In many cases, J-1 visas have a condition for such students to go back to their countries immediately after their program, and for some countries, like Nigeria, stay back for two years, before they can come back to the US to work or live permanently. However, this does not mean you cannot visit or even study in the US during this period. In fact, you can get a new visa, say an F-1 for another program, however, that 2-year condition will still be waiting for you (legally speaking that is, though I hear people may be able to find a way around this, even though dem no dey talk the way clearly). I hope you are still following me: 6. So, what happens after your ONE YEAR or THREE YEAR OPT? Some employer has to sponsor your visa (if I am not wrong, basically, get you a H1-B visa, which is a work visa) for you to stay back legally. And if this does not happen, what is your fate? See you, see your country. Again, legally. Please, I am not interested in what people do illegally to stay back in the US. So it is normal for people on OPT, who have not got sponsors yet, to be worried and in some cases desperate. Some people might decide to enroll in another program to remain in the US and delay doomsday. Note, you cannot get OPT twice for the same level of education. So if you get one for masters, you can only get another one after your PhD. 7. So, what are the options of staying back after school? Well, the straightforward one is getting an employer to sponsor your work visa (and this is not the easiest thing in the world). Outside this, a common one is marriage. People get married – real or fake, to stay back. “I know somebody, she just finished and she no come back”. Sister, your friend fit don marry tay tay, no tell you. I know people for my set wey as dem show from Africa within two semesters dem don marry before dem even focus on school. Fake marriage na money. I won’t go into the issues that are involved in that now. E no concern me. Real marriage, if una like una sef, then God bless una union. 8. Outside the easy-hanging fruit – marriage, loads of people stay back illegally. Their visas expire and they just stay back. What this means is that you are an illegal or undocumented (as Oyibo like to sugarcoat things) resident. This also means because you don’t have a work permit na only under-the-table, minimum wage kinda jobs you can be doing. Those jobs pay cash because the employer is also avoiding paying taxes to the government. Those jobs na sufferhead job of course, but if you convert your dollars to Naira, na big man you be. These are the kind of jobs that you apply in the morning and get before 12 o’clock o. Ehen. 9. Also, some undocumented people might be using a fake social security card or other people’s own to work. The thing with staying undocumented is that you cannot leave the US, because your visa is expired. As you leave like this, there is no way to come back in. Some of the people who stay abroad for donkey years and have not returned home may be illegal residents. “I know one man, since 20 years e never come back, even when im mama die, he no come.” That man fit dey undocumented and as he comot like this, gate don close. I believe now you have a clearer picture. So, if you are coming to school in the US and your goal is to remain back, here is a summary of things you need to know: 1. You most likely need to get an F-1 visa. If you come with J-1 like me, even if you decide to marry, you go still go do that your two years for Nigeria before you can come and live permanently with your wife here. If you don’t want to do that, you can switch to a visitor visa, but you cannot work with that kind of visa, unless you want to continue doing under-the-table for the rest of your life. 2. If you get an F-1, just know you have ONLY ONE YEAR after school, or THREE YEARS if your program is STEM. And in that time, if you don’t get an employer to sponsor you, (which is not impossible, but definitely not a MY CASE IS DIFFERENT matter), you will either go back or find one of the roundabout ways people use to stay back in America endlessly. There are pros and cons to roundabout ways as you should know by now. 3. Marriage is probably your surest bet – if you fall in love, whether willingly or by force, good for you, and if you want do arrangee marriage, still good for you. IF I AM TO ADVISE PEOPLE LOOKING TO RELOCATE ABROAD THROUGH SCHOOLING… Canada is definitely your best bet. Trust me, I honestly don’t get the hype about being in America. Immigration in Canada is a way better package than it is in America – in fact, they cannot be compared. If you get a student permit for Canada, after school, you get the same number of years as the length of your course to stay back and find a job. So, if you do a one-year course, you get one year. In this time, you can file for permanent residency, and even if you don’t get it immediately, you can always extend your after-school stay until you get a permanent residency. So, for Canada, the hardest thing is getting a student permit, because immigration officials know that people just use school these days to come to Canada so they can stay back. A Canadian Study Permit is definitely more difficult to get than a US Student Visa, again, for obvious reasons. If you manage to get into school in Canada, if you want to stay back, this is almost a sure way to. In a few years you can get your permanent residency, and a few more years you can get your citizenship. As a permanent resident in Canada, your chances of getting jobs in the US are way higher, if na US dey hungry you last last. And lastly, to find job after schooling in the US is not undoable, but in fact, like in many countries (as I suspect), it is not a walk in the park. Be prepared to do loads of applications (because there are thousands of people across all 50 states applying for those sweet jobs too). But if you want to finish school and work at McDonald’s feel free to relax. Nothing do you, your job sure. So, because the job space is fiercely competitive, you need to put your best foot forward. I saw the CV of one Nigerian doctor in my school with years of experience and the thing make me laugh. Even though he was qualified, that CV no fit even give am small invite for job for US – na suya wrapper material. These people use programs these days to filter through CVs and screen for certain keywords to narrow the candidates. A bad resume will never be picked. This is why any serious person should get a professional to make-over their CVs for them. My friend Grace Efezokhae, who is in Canada, provides this service, so you can ask her for details too. PS: I hear the UK's two-year post-study visa ish isn't much different from America's OPT set up. So, look before you leap. No just take your money jump enter where you no go get wetin you want. Or at least, jump enter with the right orientation so you can plan appropriately. I don talk finish. Information empowers. Make of this what you will. 6 Likes 4 Shares |

Travel / Traveling By Air For The First Time? by Jahlivesforever: 4:24pm On May 23, 2022 |
*QUICK ONE* Air travel can be quite a painstaking and daunting procedure, right from booking your flight and making sure your luggage isn’t overweight to making the flight time before it’s too late. All this can seem a little too frustrating and stressful without the proper information before your first flight, that’s why we’ve carefully put together “Ten things every new first-timer should be aware of before boarding a plane in Nigeria,” starting with; 1. Book your flight prior to the intended travel date If there's one thing every first-time flyer should be aware of, it’s the fact that you won’t always get an available seat ticket on the said day of booking, and this isn't subject to Nigeria only. A simple way to go around this is to book your flights some days prior to your intended travel date. This depends on the airline you wish to patronize. For instance, you intend to travel on a Thursday, it is advisable to start your flight booking process from Monday. Early flight booking gives you an edge in getting a ticket and also, you may be subjected to a discount or a ticket with a special offer. Note, you can also book your flights online using the Airlines’ flight app. 2. Carefully put together the required document. Your documents are essential for you to check-in. Have your documents, i.e., ID card, Passport, visa, and flight ticket carefully put together and make sure nothing is missing from this. Not having any of your required documents present during check-in could lead to flight postponement or, in worse cases, cancellation of the flight. A simple trick is to arrive at the airport an hour or two before your flight time. This makes sure you carefully go through the documentation process without feeling the first-timers' pressure and gives you a better opportunity to enjoy the Peace and Serenity of the airport. 3. Know your luggage type Before boarding a flight, it is essential to know your luggage and what part of the aircrafts’ compartment they’re meant to be stored during the course of your flight. The three types of luggage: • Hold luggage The hold luggage or checked luggage is kept away from its owner during the flight; this luggage is kept in the airplanes' hold. Usually, after it has undergone security checks you’d have to drop it at the airports’ check-in desk. • Carry-on luggage You’ve probably watched a few plane documentaries or movies where airplane passengers keep their luggage just a few inches above their seats. That luggage is called carry-on luggage. As a passenger, you can carry one to be stored in the airplanes' cabin located above the seat. There are restrictions to this type of luggage, do find out the airline luggage policies for this. • Personal items Items like laptops, phones, purses, handbags, medicine, etc., Are categorized as personal items and are kept with the passenger throughout the flight. Note, every luggage category is subject to a security check before heading on to your seat. 4. Know the Airlines’ acceptable weight for each flight class Airlines have luggage weight policies. Before flying, check with your airline and have this information handy before your scheduled flight time and date. Air peace allows luggage weight of up to 20kg for economy class and 40kg for business class while charging N500 per kilogram of extra weight outside its weight policy which is paid at the airport. Note, these price rates apply only to Air peace domestic flights. Do check for other airline luggage policies. 5. Know the terminals and wings While In the airport there are two distinct terminals, the arrival terminal and the departure terminals. And also, you will find that there are two travel wings when In the airport; the domestic wing is for flights within the country, and the international wing is for flights outside the country. 6. Check-in procedure After you must have booked your flight date and time and issued a flight ticket, it's flight date! Arrive at the airport before time and proceed to your airline counter for documentation and baggage check. 7. Boarding pass Next, have your boarding pass printed at the airport (Note, you can do this online before arriving at the airport). The boarding pass contains the passengers' names, flight date, and time of departure. To print your boarding pass, you'd have to provide a means of identification to enable you to print a boarding pass. 8. Security check Security checks before a flight is necessary to make sure you don't carry any restricted item into the plane. Note, you will be asked to take off your shoes, jacket, or any metallic jewelry you have on. It's okay to feel a little bit tensed while this procedure takes place, but be rest assured that this is totally okay, and most passengers feel that way. While on the plane, note the following; 9. High altitudes and low humidity in the cabin may lead to headaches and dizziness. Before traveling by air if you're a first-timer, a basic rule of thumb is to hydrate (drink ample water) as high altitudes and low cabin humidity can lead to dizziness and headaches resulting from dehydration. 10. Airplane food doesn't really taste good; carry your food. While bad food taste on an airplane during flight isn’t exactly new, there’s a reason for this effect. The atmosphere coupled with low humidity in an aircraft is why sweetness is reduced and saltiness heightened by a margin. It is advisable to always to carry your own food when boarding a plane if you feel you can't stay through to the end of the flight without food. Flight time can be a fun time if carefully planned out. While on it, make sure to enjoy every bit of time spent on the plane. 1 Like |

You don't criticize what you don't understand. In the holy Mass which is the same sacrifice that Jesus offered on the Calvary, we ask God to please forgive our dead brother and Grant him heaven. God cannot refuse the prayer of the church. That's is why Catholic faithful that they said mass for at death WILL NEVER EVER GO TO HELL.
