To be honest with you, I don't really see any of those post and comments as argument; I see them as earnest conversation, expressed from diverse perspective. I even appreciate bracelum opinion, because they were never a waste or useless on this thread. He too knows that.
If we are to look at our levels in life, some of us will not be here to contribute. But once in a while, we do need to share our views on these subjects as there are young people who needs to learn from them. We have young men and women in their late 20s, mid 30s, late 30s and so on among us that I strongly believe have deeper real life experience. That is why this thread is very, very rich and thriving. It is not a mud fight at all. We are all learning while at the same time, educate those who need it. More so, those who give out their time to answer questions and give guidelines are still here. No queries have gone unchecked.

I hope you understand me?
I perfectly understand your perspective. Let’s keep the discussions going!

The raging argument is just another form of “first class is not the only way to make it in life”.

In my opinion, the reaction on bracelum’s advice on taking up debt for a lowly ranked program wasn’t necessary. It should never have descended to this level. The advice bracelum gave was very apt in the context.

Yes, his talks on elite status can veer off tangent sometimes but this wasn’t one of such times.

Please let’s focus on helping each other get to America and leave this “mud fight”

I came across this post on LinkedIn and I thought to share. This is targeted at prospective MBA candidates or MS candidates in business school courses like finance or analytics.

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6516042331622379520/
This guy went to Stanford for his MBA (#1 MBA program in the world)... He’s still looking for a job. Read the comments and you’ll see many others (even with STEM MS) still job searching.

Lots of people make it seem like the hustle ends once you’re able to get into a top program. No. That’s when it actually begins because getting into a top program doesn't guarantee you a job upon graduation. According to the Stanford guy “there’s a significant a gap between leads -> interest -> offer”. You’ll still have to work your ass off to secure a job. The best your degree does for you to give you access to networks, job postings, interviews, and whatnot, but It’s your responsibility to convert these accesses to a job.

If you’re going to be using loans to finance your degree, it's even more tricky because you really need a job to pay off the loans... but then, getting the job isn't even certain... What then can you do?

Make sure you have a strategy.

1. Don’t only focus on building a profile that’ll get you into a top school. Focus on building a profile that’ll land you your dream job after getting into you into a top school. You’d do yourself a lot of good if you can get relevant and recognizable working experience before going for your program (even if it’s a pre-experience program). Multinational experiences count well too.

2. Have a plan for your loans. Don’t over-leverage yourself because anything can happen. The only certain thing in life is uncertainty. I know of someone that planned on using loans to finance her MS in finance degree but upon arriving campus, she got a TA-ship role and was able to cancel her loan agreement (You actually have a window to reject any loan agreement – depends on the terms of the loan provider).

3. You may decide to take a non-conventional route to get your MBA. You could go for a Canadian PA (which is relatively easy to get), work for 3 years, earn good $ and then go for your US MBA (you may not even need the loans at this point). Then after your MBA, you're not stranded because you have Canadian papers...

"We see better when we stand on the shoulders of those that have gone ahead of us"

Some context to this guy, he is the whistleblower who alleged Stanford was been biased in handling of financial aid

Maybe that explains why recruiters are avoiding him

Nice scores man! You did a good job! And your caution on registration wasn’t unnoticed. The thing is some people are GENUINE.
Thanks bro.

No hard feelings bro. Caution was based on personal experience, that was when I learnt sharing your login details with someone was a breach of privacy.

Congratulations Jamanuka. I would like to enquire if the manhattan 6 test you purchased is still active. My test is in few days time and I would need full length test to practice. I don't mind paying for it.

Please what special technique did you use for your verbal section, you had a great score in that section. @jamanuka

I was actually surprised at that score to be honest. However, I didn’t do anything special apart from what I already shared.

Maybe constant practice and understanding why exactly I got a question wrong and work to avoid such made the difference.

Hi People,

I took my GRE yesterday and it was quite satisfactory. I will share more on my experience and possible tips when I get my official result.

Your posts were key to my success. Let’s jeep sharing for the benefit of others.

Regards,

Hi People,

So I was waiting to get my official scores to ensure any info I was putting out won’t be incorrect.

I took my GRE on Aug 10th at JKK house and scored a 326 ( V167, Q159), AWA 4/6.

The following materials helped with my study;
Verbal
- Magoosh GRE flashcards ( I used this while in the bus, boring meeting, toilet, intact any free time I had)
- Manhattan 5lb. The RC is really damn good and exposes you to all the tricks you will need on tests day. The RC and TC are good too.
- Official materials. The other books focus on heavily on vocabulary but the official materials helps you learn usage of words. Keep an eye on the tips in the sentences so as to know the right word to use in that context.

Quant
- Manhattan 5lbs. Go through all the questions here. It pays to review thoroughly any question you got wrong.
- Official materials. The questions here are good too.

It will also be good to point out that I was already studying for GMAT before switching to GRE. That helped with the quant and RC in verbal.

Practice tests are quite important. I took the two powerprep tests and also bought Manhattan practice tests (has about 6 tests).

Finally I will love to say something about registration. I know it saves money to register with the guys that do it at a low price but again consider this what if you run into problems with that and your account gets blocked. Between the trouble of having your account blocked which means you might no longer realize your American dream and the extra naira you might pay for registration, which is worth it.

Let’s keep sharing our experiences so others can learn. The things I read on this thread greatly aided with my preparations.

Wow I have submitted applications for the people I knew personally but they were not contacted. I had to ask one of the trainees and she said the firm contacted her based on the profile she had on jobberman. I think you should maintain a good profile on jobberman and linkedin. They search these sites and do their thing; So they will contact you if your profile is good for them. I believe so...
Just curious, was this the practice when you got recruited? ...and what's the name of your firm( will help me tailor my profile to what they might be looking for)

Hope am not asking too much

The Assessed Internship is another means to enter into shell.
Just the way we apply for Shell Graduate program is the same way you apply for internship program.
They advertise the program when they want but you go through the program for 1 year before they decide if they wanna keep you or not.
You can check the career site on a regular basis to know when to apply. www.shell.com/careers
Not exactly how it works here in Nigeria.

For Shell assessed Internship in Nigeria, they go directly to selected universities to request for the top performing students in select engineering and geoscience disciplines. These are students usually in their 4th year of study and eligible for Industrial training.
The selected students then apply, write the online exams then successful ones do a phone interview ( similar to first two stages in SRD)

Successful peeps are then recruited to intern with shell. During the period of internship, they will work on a project and are assigned to a mentor and supervisor. At the end of the project duration ( usually 3-6 months) they defend this project in the presence of their Supervisor, mentor, an external assessor and a HR personell.
The result of their project defence coupled with the the rating of their performance as observed by their supervisor and mentor during the period of the project execution is what is now used in grading them.
This mirrors the Assessment Center day only that it is spread through a period.

That's the process that made Andytoc a shell staff smiley

We just need to clear the arguments. Truth is that there was a process in getting class of degrees, we need some to accept that they passed through that process and didn't live up to expectation.

That said, we agree it doesn't determine who makes it in life or not

better in every area brother... academically to morally. Imagine a first class student in computer science came to me a 2:1 statistics student that he can't change windows 8 to window 10. I was like wow!!! so grade doesn't mean anything to me unless I know that person... especially in this country where grades are bullshitly easy to cook up...
Was the bolded part of the exams he/she took leading to he/she making a 1st class degree?
If No then how did you come to the conclusion the degree was cooked up?

We are all different, grade doesn't attest to how good we are... I had a 2:1 and av lots of first class that am better than and some better than I am. So grade doesn't show how good we are or better than people. Nigerian Universities sucks. So we don't need to compare people cus of their grades. Some 2:2 better pass 2:1 or 1:1 die... no be say them say... that's just it. Moreover, courses dey different... A course where the highest grade has always been 2:2 nko? Can you now compare them to 2:1 or 1:1 in another department? NOPE. So, to me, grades are just shits for certificate.
How do you define better?
