“I thought you said robbing two times in a single day was bad omen,” said Basket, “You’re so full of faeces, Blackie.”

Black looked at his friend weirdly, “Why would you say something like that? I didn’t eat faeces this morning. I would never eat faeces. Did you listen to what I said? I said I would be the one carrying out the operation. You’ve done yours, it’s now my turn.”

“What difference does that make?”

“It makes a lot of difference, my friend. There’s nothing wrong in two different people carrying out two different jobs. You robbed our landlord, I’ll rob Chidi, safe transactions.”

“You’re such a hypocrite, Blackie.”

Black smiled, “Thank you, my friend. Anyway, I didn’t say anything about robbing Chidi today. He will be robbed on Wednesday.”

“Why not today?”

Peter stared at his friend, the smile still fixed on his lips, “I thought you were against carrying out any more operation today.”

“Quit playing around and tell me the plans.”

“Why aren’t you using your head? What would happen if we carried the colour television home – the same place where we stole one television before?”

“That’s true,” reflected Basket, “our landlord would be suspicious of us.”

“Exactly. Now let’s go find a nice restaurant. I’m famished.”

By the time the boys returned home, it was already about 5pm. The compound was in an uproar when they stepped in. their landlord was running helter-skelter and screaming at the top of his voice.

“My house has been burgled! I’ve been robbed! My telly! My telly! Oh, my telly!”

Black immediately launched into action. He ran to meet one of the tenants watching the landlord’s drama, “What happened? What happened?”

“Someone broke into our landlord’s room and stole his television.”

“What!” screamed Peter, “The same television all of us in this street watch?” He jumped up and landed on his bottom. He began to wail loudly, “Someone has robbed our landlord! Someone has robbed us! Our landlord’s telly! Our telly! Somebody help us! Our telly is gone!” He rose up and began to run around the compound helter-skelter like the landlord. If the landlord ran left, he would run right; if the landlord went north, he would go south.

Basket watched everything in awe. This was Peter’s side he had never seen before; it was as if he was staring at a total stranger. Indeed, Peter Black should be an actor; he really knew how to act.

Peter paused to catch his breath and saw Basket watching them. “Why are you standing there like a statue? Didn’t you hear that our landlord’s telly has been stolen? Come on, move over here and weep with us.”

Basket could do nothing but join in the dance of clowns. He, too, sat on the floor and began to wail loudly. Peter joined him and sat on the floor with him. They began to compete on who would wail louder. It got so ridiculous that even the landlord had to stop and watch the two idiots curiously. Even sympathizers had to leave the landlord to console the thieves.

“Our telly! Our telly!” Black and Basket continued to wail in turns like parrots that knew only one phrase.

Amidst this pathetic excitement, Basket knew in the depth of his mind that this was a smart move by Black. There was no doubt that they had gotten away with the theft of their landlord’s television, just like they would get away with the colour television they were going to purloin too.
