Christianity EtcThe True Story Behind The Death Of Apostle Ayo Babalola by jamesodu(op): 2:35pm On Oct 20, 2025
It came to pass in the month of July, 1959 that Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola, the first General Evangelist of Christ Apostolic Church traveled with his associates to Ede for an important assignment. He was there to witness the dedication of the maternity and faith home built by the Good women of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC).

The month of July, 1959 marked the thirtieth year that Babalola commenced his glorious apostolic ministry. That is if we base our calculations on his calling in October, 1928 and the 6-8 months he spent preparing himself in prayers and fasting.

During these thirty years he had never taken so much as a week of leave or vacation or retirement. It had been a whole life of service, productive service and engagement.

Thus the man who came to Ede was a tired man, a man who needed rest. By his nature, unless God took him he would never be able to rest in this world.

He would never refuse anyone who called on him for help or prayer. He would not drive people away from him even when he had not been allowed to rest. Even when he was eating, people would be asking him questions and he would be answering them. Even when he was in the bathroom taking his bath, people would kneel outside and be asking him for prayers and counsels and he would oblige them. He never turned anybody away.

Most times when he returns home from a long missionary journey; his home would have been besieged by people in need of prayers, counseling and healing; and he would attend to all of them.

He himself confessed that he had never slept fully for once for 12 days until he came to Ede.

Early in the morning of Sunday 26th July, the apostle got up as early as 5:00am and requested for hot water. A coffee was prepared for him but he insisted it must not have sugar or milk. That was how he drank it raw.

After his preparation for the service he called for his deputy, the Assistant General Evangelist, Prophet David Babajide and his host, Prophet S.O Akande. He asked the two of them to kneel and began to talk to them rehearsing his experiences in ministry from the beginning when he received the call to the present day and all the hassles he had met in ministry. He reminded the duo that within the limit of human possibility he had done his best.

He then asked each of them to pray for him that if there had been any sin he(Babalola) had committed in the course of his ministry from the beginning to that very day that God should forgive him. Thereafter he himself prayed the last prayer and made the benediction.

After the benediction, Babalola told the duo "Now I thank God the way is clear." But they didn't understand. He encouraged them to be faithful and thereafter he dismissed them.

They went for the morning service and he made the opening prayer. Pastor J.A. Medaiyese gave the sermon at the service. Throughout the service, Babalola never stood up for once not even when the congregation rose to sing hymns. He remained on his seat, until at the end when he gave the benediction.

After the service, the congregation moved straight to the maternity home for the dedication but Babalola went straight to his chambers to rest.

After the dedication, delegates began to depart for their various destinations. Some of the delegates also came to Babalola to ask for his blessings and prayers as they were about departing and he willingly obliged them.

Babalola called Pastor JSB Odusona who was also departing and reminded him of a young man he(Babalola) had met at Ibadan few days before who he promised to help with his wedding. This man had reached the age of marriage but had no father or any helper to see him through. Babalola then took it upon himself to give him the support he needed and reminded the General superintendent of the church to expedite action on the matter. This was his last act of mercy before he left for eternity.

He was left to rest. At 3:00pm his associates came for prayers with him. Medaiyese was the first to pray followed by Odutola. Then just before Babajide could pick up the prayer, Babalola himself took it and began to pray what I would call the very last prayer he made on the earth. And what did he pray about? According to Babajide, he prayed for all the people of the earth that their salvation may be sure and not once did he make mention of his immediate family. He was allowed to rest while Medaiyese went for the evening service. One Michael Isajimi, one of the assistants with Babalola stood at the entrance of the door of the room.

Around 4:00pm, the walls of the room where Babalola was began to vibrate as if there was a tremor, but the cause of the movement could not be located or traced. At 4:30pm on the dot, Babalola breathed heavily three times : Hiii, Hiii, Hiii as if to say God the Father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit, and like lightning the man was gone. He was no more. It was exactly forty days to the time he told his mother, Martha Talabi Rotimi that he would be going to call Jesus.

The entire room shook and yet the window panes did not break. Michael who was guarding the door cried with a loud voice to summon the elderly men to come. As they opened the door to the room, a wave of power hit them and they all fell to the ground. By the time they rose up and moved near, they found he was lifeless.

They began to pray while Babajide sent for Medaiyese who was preaching at the evening service to stop his sermon, close the service immediately and come down to the house.

They all surrounded Babalola, each one holding a part of his body and they prayed earnestly from 5pm till 7pm for Babalola to come back to life but there was no answer.

Medaiyese began to tearfully plead in prayer "Lord, what is our sin? What have we done wrong? Where have we missed it?"

It was then that a vision was shown to one of them where he saw Babalola before the mighty gates of heaven and entering through the gate, he laid his sword at the feet of the Lord Jesus. The Lord then told the seer that Babalola could not return to them again as they desired because the heavens have already received him.

At 7pm, Medaiyese declared plaintively, " The Great Apostle is gone."

Babalola was 55, still fit and agile and without a single grey hair on his head.

Thus marks the end of an era in Nigeria's religious and evangelical history.

Arrangements were made and the body was taken to Efon that night. Even in death, his eyes were not closed and there was a smile on his face.

Eight days later, he was committed to mother earth amidst a flood of tears, wailings and lamentations.

All the schools in Ijesha and Ekiti axis were shut for a few days as a mark of respect to the great apostle. Thus marks the end of an era.

PoliticsOshiomhole Slams PENGASSAN For Escalating Dangote Refinery Dispute by jamesodu(op): 11:32am On Oct 03, 2025
Former Nigeria Labour Congress president and senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has criticised the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria for escalating its disagreement with the Dangote Refinery into a nationwide shutdown of oil facilities, describing the move as hasty and unfair to other workers.

Speaking in an interview with Arise Television on Friday, Oshiomhole said while unions have the right to defend workers, they must do so in ways that do not create wider economic hardship.

“I think that in seeking to protect a particular set of workers, you do not then risk the jobs of several other workers. When you are pursuing a dispute, the tools you deploy must be such that they do not undermine other people’s jobs,” he said.

Oshiomhole noted that the oil union’s decision to shut down facilities of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and other firms because of issues at Dangote was ill-considered.

“I suddenly witnessed long queues at filling stations and people came to me to ask, ‘why are we not at work today, what has happened to the oil industry?’ And the reason was that PENGASSAN had decided that NNPC be shut down, several other companies shut down, all because of a problem in one refinery,” he said.

Drawing from his experience as NLC president, Oshiomhole argued that disputes should be directed at the specific employer involved.

“We had a big battle with Union Bank of Nigeria over their policy on married couples working together. But even when we had the capacity to shut down all the banks, we didn’t. We recognised that the alleged offence of Union Bank could not be said to apply to others,” he recalled.

He also cautioned against rushing into strikes without considering their broader impact.

“In pursuing war, you have to recognise that the tools you deploy must not hurt innocent people, like the tomato sellers who cannot get fuel to move their goods because there is a quarrel between one refinery and one union,” Oshiomhole said.

While affirming that the right to unionise is fundamental, he urged balance.

“Freedom of association is not just a constitutional right, it is a God-given right. But with that freedom comes responsibility, both the employer and employee must exercise their rights in a way that is fair,” he said.

Oshiomhole added that new private sector investors like Dangote should be given time to stabilise before facing intense labour action.

“An employer has to exist, mature and be strong enough to guarantee good-paying jobs. If you cripple a business before it even finds its feet, you are also destroying the jobs you claim to protect,” he warned.

Dangote Refinery, commissioned in May 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, is Africa’s largest single-train refinery with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day.

PENGASSAN, one of the country’s two major oil unions, had last month ordered members to shut down operations in protest against perceived anti-labour activities at the refinery.

The action triggered fuel queues across several states, drawing criticism from government officials and industry players who warned it could worsen Nigeria’s energy supply chain.

PoliticsYahaya Bello Honours EFCC Invitation by jamesodu(op): 11:11am On Sep 18, 2024
Former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello on Wednesday honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The former Governor was declared wanted by the EFCC for alleged fraud and corrupt enrichment while in office.

A statement by his media team said the decision was after due consultations with family, legal team and political allies.

It reads: “The former Governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had, all the while, only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process.

“The case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello had been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. It is important for the former Governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear.

“The former Governor believes firmly in the efforts of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development; and supports the fight against corruption in the country.

“It is on record that he was the first Governor of Kogi State to put in place an anti-corruption mechanism to check graft and ensure that the resources of the State work for the people of the State.

“He was accompanied to the EFCC Headquarters by high profile Nigerians.

“It is our hope that the Commission will be as professional as necessary and respect his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Politics$500,000 Bribe: Supreme Court Affirms Farouk Lawan’s Five-year Sentence by jamesodu(op): 11:29am On Jan 26, 2024
The Supreme Court has affirmed the five-year jail term handed to a former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan by the Court of Appeal.

Lawan was convicted and sentenced to prison in 2021 for accepting $500,000 bribe from businessman, Femi Otedola, Chairman, Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.

In a unanimous judgment on Friday, a five-member panel affirmed the 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal which upheld Lawan’s sentencing to five years in respect of only count three on the three-count charge on which he was tried at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In the lead judgment prepared by Justice John Okoro but read on Friday by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the apex count found that Lawan’s appeal was without merit and proceeded to dismiss it.

PoliticsBREAKING: Tinubu Raises Alarm Over His Mandate by jamesodu(op): 1:17pm On Mar 25, 2023
President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has raised alarm over alleged plots by some aggrieved politicians to truncate the transition process, particularly his expected swearing-in on May 29.

Tinubu in a statement by the spokesman of APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) Festus Keyamo also warned the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar and that of the Labour Party LP, Mr Peter Obi against taking to the streets while also pursuing their cases in court.
In the statement issued Saturday in Abuja, the President-elect noted that those who have taken to the streets protesting against his mandate are fixated on having an Interim National Government ING.

The statement reads in part: “We have watched with great concern the “condemnable” activities of some persons and groups who are desirous of truncating our democracy.

“For reasons best known to them, these persons have remained embittered that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared winner of the 2023 General Elections. Repeatedly, but unfortunately, these misguided individuals have called for either the cancellation of the results or that the President-elect should not be inaugurated on the 29th of May, 2023.

“We wish to reiterate and emphasise that these positions are not in tandem with our constitutional provisions or our electoral laws. We would have taken these as mere wishful thinking, however, because of their implications for national security and public order, we have therefore considered it necessary, if not expedient, to call them to order.

“We are aware of the intentions of those engaged in these treasonable and subversive acts. We also know those involved in the many plots being contrived to undermine the transition in particular and democracy in general. They are fixated on an Interim Government. They have done it in this country before and it threw the country into avoidable crises for many years and they want to do it again. They are bent on delegitimizing the new government. Some have made treasonable insinuations and openly called for military take-over. It is for these reasons that they are desperate to incite the people against the incoming Government.

“It is perplexing to see that those contesting the results want to be in the courts and on the streets at the same time. However, if their intention is to truncate the inauguration of the President-elect and Vice-President-elect, they should immediately bury the thought. It is gratifying to note that the President has set in motion steps for the actualisation of the swearing-in ceremonies. In this regard, the Presidential Transition Council has remained focused and committed to its Terms of Reference in respect of organizing a hitch-free handover”.

PoliticsFG Not In Breach Of Supreme Court Order On Cash Swap – Malami by jamesodu(op): 3:05pm On Feb 23, 2023
The Federal Government has said it is not in breach of the Supreme Court’s order restraining it from enforcing the February 10 deadline for old N1000, N500 and N200 notes.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, gave the Federal Government’s position while appearing as a guest on the weekly Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communication Team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The President on Thursday, February 16, 2023, in a national broadcast, directed the CBN to re-circulate the old N200 note, declaring the old N500 and N1,000 notes were no more legal tender.

This was despite the Supreme Court’s order that the old N1,000, N500 and N200 notes remain legal tender until it delivers judgment in the case filed by some States against the Federal Government.

The President’s broadcast and expressed exclusion of the N1000 and N500 notes have subjected the Federal Government to harsh criticism by many who have mostly accused the administration of breaching the Supreme Court’s order.

However, reacting to questions on the allegations of breach of Supreme Court order by the President and his administration, Malami said: “Your question can best be answered within the context of what constitutes a rule of law in the Nigerian situation. Where an order is made by a court, you have multiple options but let me state before even addressing the issue of the options available at our disposal as a government.

“The fact, clearly, that we are not a breach of any order made by the court, inclusive of any order associated with the naira redesign. We are not in breach. I believe I’m not a banker but you have not gone to establish which bank is it that you have gone to present N1000 or N500 notes that have been rejected. So we are not in breach.

“But then, assuming we are in breach, the fact remains that this matter is sub-judice as you rightly know. It’s being contested before the Supreme Court and when an order is made, you have multiple options within the context of the rule of law.

“One, you are entitled as a matter of right, if the facts and evidence support your position, to apply for setting it aside. The position of the law, legal jurisprudence is clear. Once you are attacking and you seeking for setting aside of an existing order of the court, you cannot be said to be operating in breach when you presented your application for setting aside.

“If the court is not an apex court, you equally have a right of appeal and support the right of appeal with an application of stay of execution order. So the bottom line of what I’m trying to state. If the matter is sub-judice and within the context of the rule of law, we are doing the needful as a government, in terms of ensuring that the right of the government, within the context of the naira redesign, is being protected. So we are not in breach.”

PoliticsBuni Hails Protocols Committee, Says All Now Set For APC National Convention by jamesodu(op): 5:15pm On Mar 20, 2022
Chairman of Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor of Yobe state, Mai Mala Buni, on Sunday said all is now set for the ruling party to hold its national convention.

The APC National convention is scheduled to hold on March 26, in Abuja.

He disclosed that the activities of the Protocols Subcommittee have instilled confidence in members that all is set for the biggest party in Africa to now hold its National Convention.

Buni, who was briefed by the Protocols subcommittee chairman and Governor of Kano state, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, at his residence in Abuja on Saturday night, noted that the committee has gingered pessimistic party members that the convention is going to hold on the slated date (March 26).

Governor Ganduje, in a statement issued by his Commissioner for Information and co-opted member of the committee, Malam Muhammad Garba, quoted Buni as assuring that the APC is organising a convention with a global outlook that calls for concerted efforts by all members.

Buni commended the Protocols subcommittee chairman, his vice and other members for doing a good job at the venue and ensuring that the party is organised ahead of the convention.

He said “the subcommittee is second to the main Convention Planning Committee, in view of its importance, which informed the appointment of Governor Ganduje to chair it alongside other illustrious members who have track records of achievements in their respective endeavours.”

He charged the committee to work in synergy with other committees, particularly with the Protocol Office, State House Abuja, in view of the fact that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo would be attending the convention.

The protocols Subcommittee chairman, Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, told Buni that recruitment of young men and women who will serve as protocol officers and ushers during the national convention has been completed.

“The recruits are receiving training, which is part of the responsibilities of the Protocols committee.

“The committee has also been working to come up with a programme of event for a successful convention of the party,” Ganduje explained.

Ganduje thanked the chairman of the CECPC for finding him and other members of the committee worthy to serve.

He pledged to work with the central planning committee and other subcommittees to ensure that a successful convention is held.

Other members of the committee are Senator Godswill Akpabio, former governor of Akwa Ibom state and Minister of Niger Delta Affairs; Senator Adeleke Mamora, former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly and Minister of State for Health; Rep. Hafiz Kawu, Tarauni Federal Constituency; Head of Protocol unit of the APC; Abdullahi Shu’aibu, among others.

Foreign AffairsQueen Elizabeth Contracts COVID-19 by jamesodu(op): 3:19pm On Feb 20, 2022
British monarch Queen Elizabeth 11 has tested positive for COVID-19, Buckingham Palace has said.

The monarch is experiencing “mild cold-like symptoms” but expects to continue “light duties” at Windsor over the coming week, the palace said.

“She will continue to receive medical attention and will follow all the appropriate guidelines,” it added in a statement.

The Queen, 95, had been in contact with her eldest son and heir, the Prince of Wales, who tested positive last week.

It is understood a number of people have tested positive at Windsor Castle, where the Queen resides.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweted: “I’m sure I speak for everyone in wishing Her Majesty The Queen a swift recovery from Covid and a rapid return to vibrant good health.”

The announcement comes weeks after the UK’s longest reigning monarch reached her Platinum Jubilee of 70 years on 6 February.

She carried out her first major public engagement for more than three months on the eve of her Jubilee, meeting charity workers at Sandringham House.

The Queen, who will be 96 in April, had her first vaccine in January 2021 and is believed to have had all her follow-up jabs.

On Tuesday, the Queen attended her first official engagement since coming into contact with Prince Charles, holding a virtual meeting with two new ambassadors to the UK.

The following day, she smiled as she suggested she had mobility problems during a meeting with defence staff. Standing while using a walking stick, she pointed to her left leg and said: “Well, as you can see, I can’t move.”

Prince Charles’ wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, tested positive for the virus last weeks, days after her husband.

It was the first time the duchess had caught Covid, and the second time for Prince Charles.

The Royal Household has its own physicians, and the Queen’s is Sir Huw Thomas, a consultant at St Mary’s Hospital in London and professor of gastrointestinal genetics at Imperial College London.

He is “head of the medical household”, which is part of the Royal Household looking after the health of the family. BBC

PoliticsAPC Convention: Governors Split, May Revolt Against Buni Committee by jamesodu(op): 12:06pm On Feb 20, 2022
* Confusion over aspirants’ letter demanding postponement
* Party fails to set up convention sub-committees
* State chairmen go underground over moves to replace coordinator

The cloud over the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) scheduled for February 26 hung still last night with the party’s governors split into two camps.

The issues in contention are whether the convention should proceed as scheduled and which of the six geo-political zones should produce the party’s next national chairman.

Adding to the uncertainties was the emergence of a letter yesterday by some party members seeking offices at the convention to propose the postponement of the meeting.

Some party office holders dissociated themselves from the letter.

It was also gathered that many state chairmen of the party have gone underground to resist an attempt to coerce them to sign a document on convention shift.

This development, sources told The Nation, prompted the Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) to conclude plans to replace the Chairman of State APC Chairmen Forum, Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori (Borno) with his Taraba State counterpart to force others in line to endorse postponement.

The pro-shift governors are said to have proposed that the CECPC should keep running the affairs of the party until after the conduct of the primaries for the 2023 polls.

The same forces have been trying in the last 72 hours to force the state chairmen of APC chapters to sign a communiqué to demand the postponement of the convention.

Most of the chairmen have gone underground to resist the coercion to sign a document on convention shift.

The governors also remain divided over the zone that will produce the next national chairman of the party.

Although the governors had conceded the slot to the North-Central, some governors reneged and opted to prevail on a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, from the North-East.

Most of the governors have however rejected the Dogara option by insisting on conceding the office to North-Central.

Investigation by our correspondent revealed that most members of the Caretaker Committee led by Governor Mai Mala Buni subscribed to the postponement of the convention, but it has been difficult for the committee to table it before the Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF).

It was learnt that the committee was afraid of a ‘likely revolt’ against the Buni-led committee.

Attempts by some governors to prevail on state APC chairmen to call for the postponement of the convention have also failed.

Most of the party chairmen at the state level are said to have “gone underground.”

Some governors supporting the retention of the Caretaker Committee and the postponement of the convention have not been able to gain the control of the PGF to achieve their aim.

A governor, who spoke in confidence, said: “The battle at hand is for the soul of the party. The CECPC members including Buni are in support of the postponement of the convention. It is emerging to all of us that Buni appears interested in the presidency in 2023.

“Buni’s personal, vaulting ambition is what’s driving him, but he doesn’t know how to even discuss this with us – his supposed allies who put him on the job

“All the governors are opposed to convention shift except Yahaya Bello (Kogi), who is a presidential aspirant, Hope Uzodinma (Imo) and Ben Ayade (Cross River).

“These anti-convention governors cannot constitute themselves into Progressive Governors Forum (PGF). They are in the minority and they don’t even want the same thing.

“One wants to be President, the other (Uzodinma) wants to be vice president to a Northern candidate. What unites them is that they are not keen on the unity of APC but they will eventually lose out.

“We are 22 and they are either three or four. We know the President will go by the position of the majority because he is democratic.

“Up till now, they cannot officially announce a postponement because they know the President’s position. Instead, they are using sleight of hand. They are in charge. If they want a postponement, why hide behind one finger?”

Responding to a question, the governor said Buni and the CECPC were in a fix.

The governor added: “Mai Mala cannot do it (postponement) because he knows the views of the majority of governors including first term governors. They were trying to play a divide and rule card between first and second term governors but we insisted that the right thing must be done.”

A party source claimed that most state APC chairmen have gone underground to avoid being forced to sign any communiqué for the postponement of the convention.

It was also confirmed by another governor that all his colleagues have directed their party chairmen “not to endorse any document on postponement of the convention.”

“I think those who may have signed are those from Taraba, Yobe, Kogi and Imo states. Others have gone underground, having been directed by their governors to ignore convention postponement drive.

“In frustration, the CECPC has concluded plans to replace the Chairman of State APC Chairmen Forum, Hon. Ali Bukar Dalori (Borno) with his counterpart from Taraba State, Tukur El-Sudi Ibrahim, to pave the way for the postponement of the convention to March 12 or indefinitely.

“Yet all the state APC chairmen came together to elect their leaders through a democratic process. Why will the CECPC be making moves to remove Dalori if they have nothing to hide?”

Findings confirmed that governors were divided over zoning of the office of the national chairman of APC.

It was gathered that before President Muhammadu Buhari travelled to Brussels, he had built consensus among the governors to concede the office to the North-Central.

Some governors however reneged on the pact by shopping for a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, as the next APC national chairman.

An APC governor simply said: “Mark my words; our next Chairman is from the North-Central.

“Mai Mala should go back home and concentrate on his job as governor.”

Aspirants in letter to CECPC, seek shift of convention

A forum of aspirants for offices at the convention yesterday sparked a fresh confusion in the party when they wrote an open letter to the CECPC to shift the Congress.

The shift, according to them, is for the sake of peace, unity and success of the party in next year’s elections.

In the letter signed by Maxwell Yakubu Gowon, an aspirant for National Youth Leader and Chairman of All Aspirants Forum, and Hon. Mohammed Bala Mohammed, an aspirant for National Secretary who also doubles as Secretary for the Forum, the forum claimed that the Abdullahi Adamu led Reconciliatory Committee failed in its assignment, leaving the party divided down the line.

The forum said the committee “complicated the issues at stake by refusing to look at issues holistically and relied on rumours and hearsays in coming to a conclusion in its report.”

It added: “The implication of the above statement is that those that were meant to be reconciled ended up infuriated by the actions of the reconciliatory committee.

“The signs in this regard are evident for every well-meaning member of the APC to see. But they have elected in their wisdom to downplay these contentious issues in the report submitted.

“This, in our opinion, is a great disservice to your efforts at positioning the APC for electoral success. As you may be aware, the public space has been flooded with narratives that paint the APC as a party of strange bedfellows whose interests are propelled primarily for self-aggrandizement.

“Mr Chairman may wish to critically examine the various agitations in the different states in the country. The feelers are not pleasant, and with the benefit of hindsight, it would indeed spell doom if the party goes ahead with the national convention under such circumstances.

“As a party, we must be mindful of the burden of expectation placed on our shoulders in providing credible leadership to the country.

“Suppose we can’t put our house in order. In that case, we do not have any moral justification for promising the country credible leadership because charity must begin from home.”

Chairmanship aspirants distance themselves from letter

Some national chairmanship aspirants however distanced themselves from the letter.

Contacted on the phone, one of the chairmanship aspirants, Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, said: “I am not aware of any forum, neither am I aware of any letter advising the Caretaker Committee Chairman to postpone the convention.”

Also reacting to our correspondent’s enquiry, another chairmanship hopeful, Malam Saliu Mustapha, who spoke through the Media Coordinator of his Campaign Organisation, Dapo Okubanjo, said: “We are not aware of the existence of the so-called All Aspirants Forum headed by an aspirant for the position of National Youth leader. So they can’t claim to be speaking for all aspirants, especially as we have never been invited to any meeting where such a decision was said to have been reached.

“We respect and trust the capacity of the leadership of the party to deal with the issues at stake,” Mustapha maintained.

Chief Sunny Sylvester Moniedafe, another chairmanship aspirant, said: “While conceding to the fact that we are in a democracy and everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, I make bold to say that problems will always exist and healing them is a process.

“Leadership at all levels is a continuum, and if anyone claims that we must clear everything, reconcile every difference before proceeding, we will be making a big error.

“The idea of continuity is to state all pending issues in your handover note.

“I want to appeal to the Gov Mai Mala Buni led CECPC to have that in their minds and decide on the next line of action which I believe should be by tomorrow evening, Sunday the 20th of February.

“Having said that, we must remember that our word should be our bond; they (CECPC) chose the date of 26th February on their own and should not lose their sense of integrity by doing something that will bring their integrity to question.”

Convention sub-committees yet to be constituted

Members of the party waited in vain again yesterday for the constitution of the sub-committees for the convention.

The Caretaker Committee at its 19th regular meeting of 19th January 2022 had fixed Saturday 19th February for the release of the membership of the sub-committees and their inauguration.

The caretaker committee also fixed the same day as the last day for the submission of nomination forms by all aspirants.

Politics‘campaign Of Calumny Against Tinubu Will Fail’ by jamesodu(op): 4:29pm On Feb 19, 2022
A Yoruba socio-political group, the Yoruba Ronu Group (YRG), has said those engaged in carrying out a campaign of calumny against former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in respect of his presidential ambition would fail.

It said the unwarranted online media attacks was funded by certain selfish politicians with a view to exploiting the masses by pretending to be fighting their cause.

The group said those sponsoring the attacks on Tinubu were from Yoruba extraction.

Chairman of the group, Prince Diran Iyantan, in a statement in Akure, warned that those behind the act would live to regret their actions.

Iyantan noted that online mischievous posts against Tinubu have become routinous adding that those behind the publications were well known and traceable to certain misguided politicians and fake human right crusaders.

“We have repeatedly stated in our previous releases that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s ambition does not stop other Yoruba or any South West person from aspiring to the same position.

“We just feel that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has a better chance than anyone else at clinching the position which is the reason for our support for him”.

“It is, therefore, sad to see fellow Yoruba persons casting aspersions on the person of Jagaban for flying high the flag of the Yoruba race. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu’s interest after leaving office has been to help nurture and consolidate democracy in Nigeria. This, he has done, creditably, well. In addition, he has helped the progressives to attain the power to the country’s presidency”.

“We are aware that the stakes are high as the presidential election approaches, and desperate politicians will resort to different gimmicks, basically, to rock the boat.

“Those who have committed themselves to a sustained campaign of calumny in the media against the person of Asiwaju Tinubu, the former Governor of Lagos State, will labour in vain and they are well known to us.

“We know that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is committed to the victory of the APC in the next year’s presidential election in the country. He is the most popular among the masses. The opposition has respect for him. He is an enigma.”

PoliticsOsun APC Primary: Oyetola’s Men Satisfied, Adeoti’s Loyalists Complain by jamesodu(op): 3:51pm On Feb 19, 2022
Mixed reactions have trailed the ongoing governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State.

The fierce battle for the sole ticket of the party is between the Governor of Osun State, Gboyega Oyetola, and a former Secretary to the State Government, Moshood Adeoti.

Adeoti, a former state chairman of the party, is the anointed candidate of the Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola.

While Adeoti’s men expressed satisfaction with the ongoing process, supporters of Adeoti grumbled over alleged missing names from the party’s register.

The PUNCH gathered that voting has commenced in over 300 wards in the state with Oyetola leading from unconfirmed reports shared on social media so far.

It was also learnt that there’s a large turnout in Osogbo and Olorunda Local Government Areas.

“The process was free, fair, and credible,” Ganiyu Isola, who voted at Orolu Local Government Ward 03, said.

Senate spokesperson, Ajibola Basiru, expressed satisfaction at the turnout of party members.

Basiru, a strong supporter of Oyetola, said, “This is the third ward I have been aside doing accreditation in my own ward. I have been to Ward 10 and now in Ward 9 and we have seen people ready and willing to vote.

“The party members have taken over the control and determine who will be their candidate. I only appeal to those that would lose to accept in the spirit of democracy, unity, cohesion, and development of our party to accept that in good faith and ensure that we join hands together to ensure the success of our party in the July election.”

Osun Commissioner for Finance, Bola Oyebamiji, described the large turnout as an appreciation of good governance.

At Ejigbo, former Osun Speaker Najeem Salaam, complained that INEC officials refused to show up at Ward 4 collation centre, which is the constitutionally recognised venue for the primary election.

PoliticsKogi Organized Labour Applauds Gov Bello For Approving #30000 Minimum Wage by jamesodu(op): 10:30am On Feb 17, 2022
THE organised labour in Kogi state has applauded Governor Yahaya Bello for approving the immediate implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage in Kogi State

The state chairman of NLC, Comrade Onuh Edoka gave the commendations while speaking at the State Executive Committee meeting in Lokoja on Wednesday.

He said “thissingular action of the State government has put smiles on the faces of the leadership of the organised labour, the workforce and the entire citizens of the state who will benefit from the ripple effects of improved pay package of workers.”

He also announced the suspension the proposed strike action earlier called over the non-implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage by the state government.

Recall that the organized labour in the state, last Saturday, issued a fresh seven-day ultimatum to the Kogi State Government urging them to implement the N30,000 new minimum wage or it will embark on an indefinite strike.

He appreciated Governor Bello for following the part of honour, adding that, the government has lifted the state from the list of states that are yet to implement the new minimum wage.

Edoka explained that the implementation of the new minimum wage will add value to the lives of Kogi workers.

According to him, the implementation of the new national minimum wage of N30,000 will be implemented fully for grade levels 01 to 06, while the percentage of the consequential adjustment for grade levels 07 to 17 will be partial implementation pending the time the economy of the state improves.

“On the issues of cash backing for all promotion, payment of leave bonuses and annual increments, it was also agreed that the government will compute the financial implications in order to work out modalities for implementation.

“The agreed state salary structure for the implementation of the new national minimum wage of N30,000 and its consequential adjustment covers both State and Local Government workers. For the purpose of resolving the issues of payment of salary, it was further agreed that the ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Trade Unions at the Local level must initiate further discussions to ensure that the issues are amicably and genuinely resolved,” he said.

PoliticsNorth Central To Produce APC Chair by jamesodu(op): 10:23am On Feb 17, 2022
* Buhari demands security report
* Yari, Modu-Sheriff out of race

Ahead of the February 26 national convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), stakeholders have zoned the position of National Chairman to the Northcentral geo-political zone, it was learnt yesterday.

Also, the Southsouth is likely to produce the National Secretary while the Deputy National Chairman (South) is micro-zoned to Southeast.

A source said the decision to settle for Northcentral was reached on Tuesday at a meeting of some governors and chieftains in Asokoro, Abuja.

The meeting had the blessing of President Muhammadu Buhari before he travelled out of the country.

The chairmanship aspirants from the Northcentral include Senator Mohammed Sani Musa (Niger State), Senator Umar Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa State), Mallam Saliu Mustapha (Kwara State), ex-Governor George Akume (Benue State) and Mohammed Etsu (Niger State).

Others are ex-Governor Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa State) and former Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abu Bawa Bwari (Niger State).

According to the source, the party leadership has made appreciable progress on zoning, adding that the convention date is also sacrosanct.

The source added: “The President before he left for Brussels, in Belgium, the fact was that he (President) left instructions for the Caretaker Committee, the governors and some critical leaders of the party to fine-tune and come up with two names from the earlier list submitted to him.

“I can tell you that the party leadership have made appreciable progress and nothing will stop the convention. The President gave specific instructions and the party leadership in concert with the governors and they are working round the clock to ensure a rancour-free convention.

“Another important assignment given was to resolve the zoning of the national secretary between Southsouth and Southeast and present a position to him on Saturday when Mr President returns from the African Union (AU) and European Union (EU) Summit.

“The meeting resolved to zone the office of the National Secretary to Southsouth while the post of Deputy National Chairman (South) goes to Southeast.”

Other offices are being zoned to give all sense of belonging and ensure a stronger party ahead of the general elections. The CECPC will in the week release the full zoning list

The Nation also gathered that the zoning of the National Chairman slot to the north-central was vehemently opposed by a governor from the zone due to his presidential ambition, but had to bow to superior arguments by his colleagues.

The adoption of zoning that edged out five of 12 contestants. In the race now are: Adamu; Al-Makura; Akume; Mustapha (Turaki Ilorin); Sen. Sani Musa; Bwari; and Mohammed Etsu.

Those who have technically lost out include Yari; Sheriff; Yuguda; Dr. Shinkafi and Monidafe.

It is unclear if the affected five aspirants will defy consensus and contest at the convention.

A top source confirmed that President Buhari has demanded security report on all the aspirants.

Sources said the President, governors and party leaders opted for North-Central because the zone has “not benefitted much from the power equation within the government and the party.”

It was also learnt that the choice of North-Central was designed to “take the battle to the opposition and match the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) permutations by permutations.”

The source said: “The President and our leaders at all levels, including governors are considering North-Central for some equity and fairness.

“Out of the six geopolitical zones, the presidency is in the North-East, the Vice President comes from the South-West, the President of the Senate (North-East); the Speaker of the House of Representatives (South-West); the Deputy President of the Senate (South-South); and the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (North-Central).

“The agitation for some balance from the North-Central is what we cannot ignore. The reality is that power will shift to the South and the North-Central cannot continue to be sidelined.

”More importantly, we want to take the battle to the zone with the PDP. Barring last minutes intrigues, the zone will produce the next chairman. It is a struggle for votes in 2023, we need to be strategic.”

The source added: “Technically, they are out of the race.

“Those who have lost out include another former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, Abdulaziz Yari; ex-Governor Ali Modu Sheriff; ex-Governor Isa Yuguda Dr. Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi and Sunny Sylvester Monidafe.”

It was unclear if the affected five aspirants will defy consensus option and contest at the February 26th national convention.

As at press time, it was gathered that the President has demanded for security report on all the aspirants.

Another source added: “APC is determined to have a new integrity-inclined, broad-minded and a matured national chairman. We will not take anything for granted.”

EducationUPDATED: At Last, ASUU Declares Nationwide Strike by jamesodu(op): 1:15pm On Feb 14, 2022
The Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared a “comprehensive and total” strike.

The strike was declared at a press conference addressed by the President of ASUU, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, on Monday.

He said the strike, which takes effect from Monday, February 14, 2022, would last for an initial period of four weeks.

According to him, the union tried to avoid the strike but the Federal Government is unresponsive to the union’s demands.

“We don’t like to see our students at home. We don’t want our academic calendars disrupted but our demands are not met,” he added.

The ASUU chairman also said ASUU NEC faulted the creation of new universities.

Osodeke asked the Federal Government to call the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, to order over the unpaid Earned Academic Allowances of its members in the university.

“We have an agreed template with FG but the VC refused to pay. Failure to pay using that template is a misappropriation. He should be cautioned,” the ASUU president said.

Members of the union’s National Executive Council had held marathon meetings since Saturday at the University of Lagos titled, ‘NEC for NEC.’

ASUU had sensitised and mobilised lecturers and students across all universities on the reason the union might likely go on strike.

Backgound
The union had expressed grievances over the failure of the Federal Government to fulfil some of the agreements it made as far back as 2009. ASUU had on November 15, 2021, given the federal government a three-week ultimatum over the failure to meet the demands.

The lecturers threatened to embark on another round of industrial action following the alleged “government’s unfaithfulness” in the implementation of the Memorandum of Action it signed with the union, leading to the suspension of the 2020 strike action.

After the union’s National Executive Council meeting at the University of Abuja on November 13 and 14, ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, lamented that despite meeting with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on October 14, 2021, on issues, including funding for revitalisation of public universities, earned academic allowances, University Transparency Accountability Solution; promotion arrears, renegotiation of 2009 ASUU-FGN Agreement, and the inconsistencies in Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System Payment, none of its demands had been met.

Following the threat, the Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, promised that the union would be paid.

A few weeks after, ASUU suspended the planned strike, as N22.1 billion earned allowances were paid to lecturers in federal universities.

On the heels of the union’s renewed agitations, the co-chairmen of the National Inter-religious Council, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar III, and the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Dr. Samson Ayokunle, visited the President, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), last month, over the lack of implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding the government signed with ASUU in 2009 and others.

PoliticsGunshots As Two NURTW Factions Clash In Agbado, Lagos by jamesodu(op): 1:26pm On Feb 11, 2022
There was pandemonium in the Agbado area of the Alimosho Local Government Area in Lagos State on Friday morning when two factions of the National Union of Road Transport Workers clashed in the area.

Eyewitnesses told The PUNCH that road users and passersby scampered for safety when the two warring factions violently engaged each other.

Gunshots were also heard during the conflict over ticket collection at the parks.

The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the development.

He, however, said policemen have been deployed in the affected areas.

Ajisebutu said, “It was a brewing conflict over ticketing that would have led to a violent confrontation/crisis between two factions of NURTW in Kola Bus Stop area and its environs.

“Police patrol teams from Alakuko, Agbado, Ijaiye- Ojokoro and reinforcements from the headquarters have been deployed to the area on the order of the Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi.

“The place is calm. No threat to lives and property currently as the police are still maintaining their presence in the area.”

NURTW members in Lagos led by Musiliu Akinsanya aka MC Oluomo, have been involved in deadly clashes of late.

The PUNCH had reported that the Lagos Government last month suspended NURTW operations in the Idumota area of Lagos Island following the violent clash recorded in the area.

PoliticsPressure On Buhari To Reject Reworked Electoral Bill by jamesodu(op): 11:18am On Feb 09, 2022
•Eyebrow on provision that ministers should resign to contest for office •INEC to get list of candidates Aug. 18

President Muhammadu Buhari is under pressure to reject the reworked Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022, it was learnt yesterday.

Sources said those pushing against presidential assent to the bill anchor their argument on “certain anti-democratic and discriminatory clauses”.

But, if signed and it becomes law, political parties will be expected to submit the names of their presidential candidates by August 18 — six months before the date of the presidential election.

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) timetable, the presidential election will hold on February 18, 2023.

Going by the provision of the reworked bill sighted by The Nation, on the date of submission of names of candidates, primaries for National Assembly, governorship and presidential candidates will hold between July and mid-August.

A source said: “The President may still reject the bill because of ‘vendetta and anti-democratic clauses’ in the reworked Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022.

“We may end up using the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended) for the 2023 general election because of strange clauses.

“For instance, it is illegal to exclude political office holders from primaries. By implication, ministers, commissioners and others cannot participate in the electoral process.

“Also, the nation does not have the wherewithal for the use of the electronic voting machine. Most politicians in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are uncomfortable with it.”

He added: “The consensus clause is cumbersome and an attempt to hit back at state governors who used to impose candidates. So, we should expect a likely rejection of the bill by the President.”

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami (SAN) said he received the reworked bill sent to him by the President for his advice, on Monday. He said he would propose to the President to sign the bill if the content is in the national interest.

According to other provisions in the bill, the electoral commission may use an electronic voting machine or any other voting device for the election.

Ministers, commissioners and other political appointees are barred from serving as poll agents during the election.

Besides, no political appointee at any level, be it a minister, commissioner or board chairman, can vote or be voted for during primaries.

They are mandated to resign before the primaries of their parties.

The election expenses for elective offices are pegged as follows: presidential, N5billion; governorship, N1billion; Senate and House of Representatives, N100million and N70million; House of Assembly, N30million; chairmanship election into an area council, N30million; and councillorship, N5million.

No individual or other entity shall donate to a candidate more than N50million.

Section 29 (1-3) of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022 is explicit on the deadline for the submission of the list of candidates.

The section says: “Every political party shall, not later than 180 days before the date appointed for a general election under this Act, submit to the Commission, in the prescribed forms, the list of the candidates the party proposes to sponsor at the elections, who must have emerged from valid primaries conducted by the political party.

“The list or information submitted by each candidate shall be accompanied by an affidavit sworn to by the candidate at the Federal High Court, High Court of a state, or Federal Capital Territory, indicating that he or she has fulfilled all the constitutional requirements for election into that office.

“The Commission shall, within seven days of the receipt of the personal particulars of the candidate, publish same in the constituency where the candidate intends to contest the election.”

Regarding mode of primaries, Section 84 (1) recommends: “A political party seeking to nominate candidates for elections under this Act shall hold primaries for aspirants to all elective positions, which shall be monitored by the Commission.

“(2) The procedure for the nomination of candidates by political parties for the various elective positions shall be by direct, indirect primaries or consensus.”

The conditions for consensus are as follows:

A political party that adopts a consensus candidate shall secure the written consent of all cleared aspirants for the position, indicating their voluntary withdrawal from the race and their endorsement of the consensus candidate.
Where a political party is unable to secure the written consent of all cleared aspirants for the purpose of a consensus candidate, it shall revert to the choice of direct or indirect primaries for the nomination of candidates for the aforesaid elective positions.
A special convention or nomination congress shall be held to ratify the choice of consensus candidates at designated centres at the national, state, senatorial, federal and state constituencies, as the case may be.
Section 84(10-13) limits courts from either stopping party primaries or elections from holding.

The section prevents political office holders at any level from participating or contesting for nomination into any elective office during primaries at the national convention or state congress.

It claims: “No political appointee at any level shall be a voting delegate or be voted for at the convention or congress of any political party for the purpose of the nomination of candidates for any election.”

Politics2023 Presidency: Osinbajo Gets Pastor Adeboye’s Nod by jamesodu(op): 9:38am On Feb 08, 2022
There were strong indications, yesterday, that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will announce his presidential ambition immediately after the All Progressives Congress (APC) national convention, slated for Saturday, February 26.

This is even as he has reportedly got the nod of his spiritual father and General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, to vie for the position.

The vice president’s quest was contained in an Instagram post by Omolubu2023, a support group for Osinbajo 2023, which declared him the face of hope.

The group claimed that sources close to Osinbajo’s strategy team made the disclosure at the weekend.

The group quoted the sources as saying: “In spite of the ongoing campaigns against his currently rumoured bid for the presidency by some interests in the South West, where he hails from, Osinbajo had made up his mind to give the presidency a shot. Even more instructive, inside sources claimed, was the fact that Osinbajo had received the blessing and the charge to go ahead with his ambition from Pastor Adeboye.

“Take it to the bank, he will run and he is declaring soon after the APC convention. All is set, including premium consultations already done. The coast is clear and the journey is looking good. I believe Prof. is also motivated by the increasing level of support from across the country, especially, the youths of this country.

“From the North to the South, tell me where he has visited recently and the charge has not been that he should contest? He has capacity, competence and knows what the issues are. Importantly, he can also sell them – I mean the issues. So, why will he not run? Why should the bitterness and envy of some minions stifle him?”

The group stressed that Osinbajo is unfazed by the growing allegation of betrayal and the push for him to stand down his ambition for his former principal and supposed benefactor, Bola Tinubu, who had since declared his intention to run. He was said to have described the attacks against him as the real motivation to take his chances.

“In fact, none of such bothers him. But he has done one thing though, he has called his supporters and pleaded with them never to talk down on Tinubu or engage in a mud fight with his support groups, even in the face of obvious provocation.”

Meanwhile, APC has said despite speculations, the party has not yet sat down to discuss the issue of zoning its presidential ticket.

Speaking on a television programme monitored in Lagos, yesterday, Director of Organisation at the national headquarters of the party, Ussiju Medaner, said the fact that all aspirants for the national chairmanship are from the North does not automatically mean the presidential ticket would go to the South or North.

There have been speculations that the ruling party would zone its presidential ticket to the South, which is why, till date, no southern aspirant has indicated interest in contesting for the national chairmanship of the party, and most of those who have indicated interest in contesting for the presidency on the platform of the party are all from the South, except Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State.

Medaner, however, said it would be faulty to assume that based on where those showing interest in the chairmanship of the party come, the party has zoned the presidential ticket.

“If you look at our pre-convention activities, you will see that the sub-committees will be announced on February 19, by this, you can see that there is no zoning committee and they have not sat to discuss anything. People have aspirations and, maybe, people from the South are gearing up too because people need to make consultations.

“If people come out early to indicate interest in the chairmanship, it doesn’t mean it is for this side or for that side. We must have a party before anyone aspires for any position; and right now, we are more focused on building the party. Once we have a party which actually belongs to all Nigerians, they will exercise their franchise because everybody is allowed within the ambits of the law,” he said.

On the issue of factions in many state chapters of the party, he claimed that most of the states have resolved their issues and that the party is working hard to ensure the February 26 national convention takes place.

PoliticsBREAKING: Benin Republic Extends Sunday Igboho’s Detention By ‘six Months’ by jamesodu(op): 12:42pm On Feb 07, 2022
The detention of Yoruba Nation activist Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho has been extended by six months, The Nation has learnt.

The Counsel for the detained activist, Chief Yomi Aliyu SAN confirmed the extended incarceration of his client.

But this is contrary to claim by Abuja-based human rights lawyer Pelumi Olajengbesi on Saturday that the 49-year-old agitator would soon regain freedom.

Olajengbesi, in a Facebook post, stated that Igboho’s freedom would attract wild jubilation across Yorubaland.

Igboho has been in detention in Benin Republic since he was arrested at an airport in Cotonou by the neighbouring country’s security forces while trying to flee to Germany in July 2020.

He fled Nigeria for Benin Republic after the Federal Government declared him wanted.

Despite frantic efforts to get him released, checks by The Nation show he has spent over 202 days in Benin Republic prison.

Aliyu noted that there was no criminal charge or extradition request from Nigeria against Igboho.

He said: “Contrary to what was speculated in the news by a lawyer, the government of the Republic of Benin has renewed the incarceration of Chief Sunday Adeyemo a.k.a Igboho Oosa for another six months even though there is no criminal charge in their file in Cotonou and without extradition request from Nigeria.”

Aliyu further disclosed that he would approach the court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS Court) to challenge the extended incarceration of his client.

PoliticsNIMC Portal Breaks Down, Banks, Telcos, Passport Issuance Suffer by jamesodu(op): 9:31am On Feb 07, 2022
Telcos lose millions, customers’ verification affected, NIMC apologises as engineers battle crisis

Thousands of telecommunication subscribers nationwide seeking to retrieve their lost Subscriber Identity Module cards or acquire new lines temporarily have been left stranded, following a technical glitch in the National Identity Management Commission portal that has grounded SIM-related services.

The affected NIMC portal enables telecom firms, the Nigerian Immigration Service, banks and other organisations to verify the National Identity Number of their customers before attending to them, in line with the Federal Government’s directive.

Following the directive by the Nigerian Communications Commission for the inclusion of NIN in the requirements for all new and existing SIM cards, telecom firms are required to synchronise their SIM registration portals with the NIMC portal in order to verify the details of their subscribers.

Downtime enters sixth day, MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9mobile suspend SIM replacement/acquisition

However, the downtime experienced over the past five days by the NIMC portal has made it almost impossible for telecom firms to sell new SIM cards or retrieve lost lines.

According to a source at MTN who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorised to speak on the matter, the downtime in the NIMC network which occurred late on Tuesday has brought SIM-related services to a halt.

The source said, “NIMC made it compulsory that before we can register a customer, we have to verify their NIN. The agency gave us a back route to its server. We connect to the server to verify NIN. When we verify, it will bring the record of the customer (the information the customer gave to NIMC while registering for NIN). We have to confirm the information the customer gave NIMC against what we have. There’s a way we connect to the NIMC server. It is that server that has been down since Wednesday.

“Before now, we didn’t need NIN to do this. We just use the customer’s valid ID card and SIM pack. If the customer does not have that, a sworn affidavit is okay. However, the introduction of NIN has changed that.”

Speaking on how the development might affect the company’s revenue, the official said, “We have registration stores (centres) that attend to hundreds of customers on a daily basis. In my service centre, we attend to not less than 200 customers in a day. We can’t really estimate the amount we are losing. Sometimes, after retrieving their lines, some customers can buy as much as N30,000 airtime. Some can buy as much as N5,000 airtime. So, any day we don’t do business, one service centre can lose up to hundreds of thousands of naira.”

When our correspondents visited some service centres of the telcos, officials and customers narrated their ordeals.

When one of our correspondents paid a visit to a Glo retail outlet in Lagos, a myriad of frustrated subscribers could be seen inside and outside the premises of the service centre.

Some of the subscribers told our correspondent that they had visited the outlet for days on end but they were not attended to due to the NIMC portal glitch.

“Seriously I don’t understand, and I called them to ask if everything was okay before I came here. I came the other day and they told me the same thing,” a disgruntled subscriber said after being told SIM-related services was yet to be restored due to the NIMC server glitch.

In a chat with one of our correspondents, a top official at a Glo retail outlet, who also pleaded anonymity, confirmed that with the new directive by the NCC, all telcos are compulsorily required to verify the NIN details of all subscribers before registering their new SIM cards.

“The problem is with the NIMC server. Their server is down; we can’t connect with them. We don’t know when it will be back. All the telecoms (companies) have network but because of NIN verification, we can’t work. It is a Federal Government directive: without NIN, we can’t do anything. Even if you want to buy SIM and register, without NIN, you can’t do it.”

In the same vein, subscribers were seen at an Airtel office lamenting their inability to retrieve their GSM lines despite repeated attempts to do so during the week.

A subscriber, who identified himself as Tochukwu, said, “This is my second time here and they have been saying the same thing, that they don’t have network. They’re saying it’s because of this NIN something. It’s quite disappointing because after today which is Saturday, I won’t have chance to do this again.”

A member of staff at the Airtel office, who did not want to be named, said the NIMC portal downtime had grounded SIM-related services of telcos across the country.

“You cannot get a new SIM until next week because there is no network. It’s not all network. It is this NIN something. It’s because we have to use your NIN to register the SIM. It affects all the telecommunications (companies),” he said.

NIMC, telcos, other stakeholders meet

As the problem lingered, it was gathered that the NIMC officials held a meeting with telcos and other stakeholders over the development.

It was learnt that NIMC advised telcos to temporarily revert to the vNIN platform until it is able to sort out its technical difficulties.

A top official privy to the development said, “NIMC confirms its service is still down and it doesn’t have an estimated turnaround time from its service provider. Hence, it is looking for alternatives to restore services over the weekend. However, NIMC has proposed that we use vNIN in the interim which the industry kicked against based on technical readiness and process issues.”

However, the meeting held with NIMC resolved that telcos must uphold certain rules while the glitch lingers.

It said, “New registration and SIM swap without a prior verified NIN and linked to our Know Your Customer will not be allowed until full service is restored.

“SIM swap for a previously verified NIN that has been linked to our (telcoms) Know Your Customer will be allowed to proceed based on when approval letter is received from NCC today (Friday).

“New SIM registration (additional SIM for an existing subscriber with a previously verified NIN and linked to our (telcoms) Know Your Customer) will be allowed to proceed based on when approval letter is received from NCC today (Friday).”

As of the time of filing this report, it could not be verified if the approval has been received or not.

According to some telcos’ officials, there is a feeling of discontent among operators due to the technical readiness and bottlenecks that would be required to make the temporary switch to the vNIN.

It was gathered that the telcos had kicked against it when it was suggested initially.

It is understood that the vNIN, which involves generating tokens, is riddled with technical concerns which the telcos are not prepared to commit resources to, particularly given the fact that the switch to the vNIN platform will only be on a temporary basis until the NIMC server glitch is resolved.

“Nobody is prepared for that one (tokenisation). It was supposed to start in January, but they (telcos) were not ready. Now they’re trying to push tokens. It’s possible they deliberately collapsed this one so they can push people to tokens. I don’t know why they do that. There has been no proper training (in how to use the token system),” a top official of a telecom firm said.

Also, officials of the Nigerian Immigration Service told our correspondents on condition of anonymity that passport application process was delayed in some passport offices because the NIN verification process was stalled.

They said some passport capturing appointments might have to be rebooked over the development.

“The glitch at the NIMC portal affected passport application process during the week. There was a need to verify applicants NINs. This could not be done. It started since late on Tuesday,” an immigration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said.

Also, top officials of some banks said the development affected account opening during the past week as applicants who had NIN as their only means of identification could not be attended to.

“Banks have various portals for verifying IDs. Those with NINs could not be attended to because the portal was down,” an official of FCMB said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the development.

When contacted, the NIMC spokesperson, Kayode Adegoke, who preferred to revert via SMS, had not responded to text messages as at the time of filing this report.

However, a public statement issued by the NIMC late on Saturday linked the problem to a downtime as a result of a “maintenance service.”

However, checks with some of the telcos reveal that prior information about this maintenance was not communicated to them.

NIN verification service down due to maintenance, says NIMC

In a statement, the NIMC said its NIN verification service was down due to maintenance being executed by its service provider.

The statement was titled ‘NIMC NIN verification service temporarily unavailable.”

It read, “The National Identity Management Commission wishes to inform the general public that its NIN Verification Service is temporarily unavailable due to the maintenance service being carried out by one of the Commission’s network service providers.

“The NIMC wants to assure the public that verification and authentication services would be restored once the maintenance is concluded.

“The commission apologises for any inconveniences this might cause our esteemed customers, and all hands are on deck to ensure speedy restoration. Meanwhile, the public can make use of the alternative tokenisation verification platform.”

The President, National Association of Telecoms Subscribers, Adeolu Ogunbanjo, said the association was aware of the NIMC server downtime and had been duly informed that the situation was being handled.

He said, “I learnt it’s a network issue. It’s something they’re looking at. I called two operators, especially the regulatory officials and they said they were working on it and that it would soon be restored. It’s rather unfortunate, but what do you do? I’m sure NCC knows about it.

“What I’ve not done is to talk to the NCC, and that is because the operators have said it’s an issue they are addressing. I want to go to Alausa tomorrow to find out what is happening apart from what the operators have told me.”

PoliticsMinistry Gets N210b SUKUK Funding For Roads by jamesodu(op): 3:13pm On Feb 04, 2022
The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing on Thursday received a cheque of N210 billion of SUKUK funding for the execution of critical road projects across the country.

Two other Ministries benefited from a total of N250 billion 2021 SUKUK. While the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing received N210 billion, the Ministry of Federal Capital Territory received N29 billion and the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs received N10 billion.

The SUKUK, which is a form of Public Private Partnership (PPP), was among the funding options adopted by the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari to fund the construction of critical roads in Nigeria.According to a statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations of the Ministry, Mrs Boade Akinola, at the symbolic presentation ceremony of the N250 billion Federal Government 2021 SUKUK cheque to the three beneficiary Ministries, the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, gave an account on how his ministry spent the previous SUKUK funds given to the ministry.

The minister stated that from the first SUKUK funds of N100 billion, released in 2017, 25 roads, covering 482 kilometres length were delivered; the second SUKUK of 2018 had 28 roads covering 643 kilometres length delivered, while the third SUKUK funds of N162 billion covered 44 highway and bridge projects with the total length of 757 kilometres covered across the nation.

Fashola went further to explain that SUKUK financing has enhanced completion of some priority road and bridge projects across the country which includes: the completion of 296 KM Sokoto-Tambuwal-Jega-Yawuri in Sokoto and Kebbi States, completion of 142 KM Section II (Shuwarin – Azare) of Kano-Maiduguri road, completion of 106 KM Section III (Azare- Potiskum) of the Kano-Maiduguri road and the completion of 1.2 kilometer/360m length Ikom Bridge.

The Minister also explained that the impact of debt and borrowing on the economic lives of the people was significant; pointing out that proper usage of the debt on infrastructure in Nigeria had helped in galvanizing the economy.

He said: “Another thing to take home is that debt properly used can galvanize the economy. It is that debt instrument that serves so many people from diverse parts of Nigeria here today,” he explained.

“Wealth is distributed across when committed to infrastructure. Money moving around the economy creates consistent employment and engagement. Suppliers are at work.

Earlier, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. (Dr.) Zainab Ahmed, disclosed that so far from 2017 to date, the total SUKUK funds issued to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing was N362.577 billion which the Debt Management Office issued on behalf of the Federal Government for the funding of key road projects through SUKUK, stating that government has given priority to capital expenditure spending in order to sustain the momentum of the economy.

In her remarks, the Director-General of the Debt Management Office (DMO), Mrs. Patience Oniha, said that presentation of the N250 billion SUKUK cheque to the three ministries was in line with the President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s strategic objectives of development of infrastructure.

She said: “Improvement in infrastructure is widely accepted as one of the best means of creating jobs, supporting and attracting new businesses and promoting growth and development due to its multiplier effects.

“I am pleased to report that since the debut of N100 billion Sovereign SUKUK in September 2017, the DMO has issued three more, getting better each time and bringing the total amount raised through SUKUK so far to N612.577 billion.”

RomanceStop Looking For Ready-made Husbands, Charly Boy Tells Ladies by jamesodu(op): 12:12pm On Feb 04, 2022
Singer and activist Charles Oputa aka Charly Boy has urged ladies to resist offering only sex in relationships.

The former PMAN president said that ladies must be able to support their men in other areas of life.

Oputa noted that relationships are cut short nowadays because many ladies only have sex to offer in their relationships and nothing more

He said: “A lot of girls complain that guys walk away from them simply because they refused giving them Sex. Some have even turned into intimacy gadgets just to keep their man. Let me be very open here, sex might not be the reason these guys walk away.

“Remove sex from a relationship and see that most girls don’t have anything else to offer their man. Aside sex, what do you have to offer to a man. Can you support him spiritually? Can you support him physically/financially? How about mentally?

“All you do is demand money for bags, shoes, phones, clothes, and outings. Making him spend unnecessarily. What are you even bringing to the table. Have you ever sat him down and helped him plan about his future. Try to be a Woman that a man will always regret losing for the rest of his life.

“Be that woman that your man can never afford to lose to another man. Build your man to your taste and stop looking for a ready-made husband when you are not a ready-made wife”.

PoliticsBuhari Rebuffs Lobby To Shift APC Convention Date - The Nation by jamesodu(op): 9:10am On Feb 04, 2022
No venue in party’s notification letter to INEC
State chairmen inaugurated

Last-minute push by some party chiefs to shift the All Progressives Congress (APC) convention date has collapsed.

President Muhammadu Buhari staved off pressure from lobbyists, insisting that the February 26 date is sacrosanct.

Following this, the APC caretaker committee wrote a February 2 letter informing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of the convention date and to seek its monitoring of the process. But the letter curiously did not indicate the venue of the convention.

An INEC source, who confirmed the receipt of the letter yesterday, said non-indication of the venue did not breach any rule. He added that the party’s letter was within the 21-day timeline required by the Electoral Act for a party to notify the electoral agency of its convention date.

Also yesterday, the party inaugurated 34 of its 36 state chairmen, as well as that of the FCT. Sokoto and Kano chapters were left out.

Caretaker Chairman and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni was absent at the ceremony, which was supervised by Caretaker Secretary John James Akpanudohede.

Buni was at the Presidential Villa to present Senate Deputy Minority Leader Emmanuel Bwacha to the President, having defected from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

The President, who linked the crises rocking the ruling party to the delay in the conduct of the convention, said the exercise should not be shifted.

A source said: “President Buhari stood his ground by being adamant on February 26 for the convention. He felt the party ought to go beyond its caretaker structure. He is also conscious of the fact that the party must prepare for primaries for the 2023 poll.

“And the tension over the convention in APC has deepened the cracks in the party. He demonstrated a strong will in opposing moves to shift the convention date.

“What guided the President was the unanimous decision of the governors to hold the convention on February 26. The President saw no reason for any postponement again.

“With this, all is set for the national convention of APC.”

The President’s trip to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia for the African Union (AU) Summit further blocked the anti-convention forces from having access to the APC leader.

According to the source: “Buhari shut his doors against lobbyists seeking the postponement of the convention. His trip to Ethiopia for the AU meeting foreclosed any other option than for the CECPC to notify INEC.

“As the leader of the party, the President will be angry if the caretaker committee fails to meet up with the Friday deadline to notify INEC of the agreed date of February 26.

“It was an ambush which left proponents of convention shift stranded.”

However, an investigation by our correspondent revealed that the ruling party notified INEC of its convention in a letter with reference number APC/ NHDQ/ INEC/19/022/ 14.
The said letter was delivered to INEC and acknowledged by the electoral agency on February 3.

The source said: “It is, however, curious that APC did not indicate the venue of the convention in its letter. It is unclear why the party did so. This is not in line with official practice and precedent.

“Convention is a constitutional obligation of a political party as enshrined in Section 223 of the 1999 Constitution. So, APC is not doing INEC any favour, it has to comply with the rules regulating such an obligation.

“We are awaiting another letter on the venue of the APC national convention.

“Section 223 says: The constitution and rules of a political party shall (a) provide for the periodical election on a democratic basis of the principal officers and members of the executive committee or other governing body of the political party.”

Investigation showed that INEC was notified after the President declined entreaties from three governors and other anti-convention elements to shift the February 26th date.

Thirteen aspirants are jostling to lead APC with no one ready to step aside.

In the race to lead the APC are: former governors Abdul-Aziz Yari (Zamfara); Umar Tanko Al-Makura (Nasarawa); Ali Modu Sheriff (Borno); George Akume (Benue); Danjuma Goje (Gombe) and Isa Yuguda (Bauchi).

Others are: Mallam Saliu Mustapha; Senator Sani Mohammed Musa; Sunny Sylvester Monidafe; Mohammed Estu; Alhaji Sani Abdullahi Shinkafi and Bawa Bwari.

Although the Chairman of the APC National Reconciliation Committee (NEC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu was said to be interested, he has not confirmed or denied the speculation.

The CECPC was inaugurated on June 25, 2020, following the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee (NWC).

Although it was meant to be an interim administration with a six-month mandate, the Caretaker Committee’s tenure was extended in December 2020 for another six months.

But in June last year, the committee was only directed by President Buhari to draw a timetable for congresses at all levels in preparation for the convention.

While party members were expecting the exercise to hold in December 2021, the party was enmeshed in a crisis of an appropriate date for the convention.

The APC governors intervened on January 16 and fixed February 26 for the convention against the committee’s wish for more time.

It was gathered that those opposed to the national convention were banking on the Adamu Committee’s Interim Report for the extension of the tenure of CECPC.

A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “There is tension in APC following the uncovering of plans to postpone the party’s national convention.

“Some forces/ groups in the party want to shift the convention until when it is too tight for APC and the party will be left with no choice than to pick their anointed presidential and vice-presidential candidates. That is the bigger picture of the plot.

“As part of the game, the same forces/ groups will want the CECPC to conduct presidential, governorship and legislative primaries before the National Convention.”
