The Edo Central Senatorial seat in the National Assembly has been formally declared vacant by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

This development follows the inauguration of Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the Governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024.

The declaration aligns with Section 68(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which mandates that a lawmaker’s seat becomes vacant upon assumption of another public office.

The red chamber urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacancy.

The announcement on Wednesday followed a letter submitted by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Benue South.

“This vacancy has become necessary following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as governor. In compliance with the Constitution, his seat is now deemed vacant. I respectfully request that the Senate President make the declaration and notify INEC accordingly,” Moro wrote.

Responding swiftly, Senate President Akpabio affirmed the constitutional basis for the decision, officially declared the seat vacant, and directed INEC to organise a by-election to ensure Edo Central Senatorial District continues to have representation in the upper chamber.

Soyombo said that some of more senior men of the Nigerian Customs Service were directly or indirectly involved in the smuggling operation.

Nigeria’s investigative journalist, Fisayo Soyombo, has again exposed how the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) officers allegedly colluded with notorious smugglers in another round of rice smuggling and brought in over 3000 cars.

Soyombo, who said this on his social media account on Wednesday, said that the rice were smuggled from Idi-Iroko in the Ipokia local government area of Ogun State into Sango area of the state on Tuesday night.

Soyombo said, “It has been brought to my notice that while the rest of us were asleep last night, your men in Ogun State colluded with smugglers to move over 3,000 cars from Idi-Iroko into Sango — that’s at least 9,750,000 kg of rice (3,000 multiplied by 65 bags multiplied by 50kg) through the backdoor.

“The process, facilitated by Najeem Akorede, your man popularly called ‘Najeem Custom’, was spearheaded by Adeyemi Habeeb Abdulganiy, the smuggler better known as ‘Abuga’.”

Soyombo said that some of more senior men of the Nigerian Customs Service were directly or indirectly involved in the smuggling operation.

He added, “This specific track of smuggling was originally scheduled for Saturday night, but it could not proceed as some of your officers had not yet been settled.

Soyombo has been making a series of revelations and exposure of rice smuggling into the country through Ogun state, aided by officers of the Nigerian Customs Service.

He had last week revealed that at exactly 10:01 pm on Tuesday, December 3, he tweeted that 1500 cars containing rice were being moved from Idi-Iroko into Sango and Owode by Adeyemi Habeeb Abdulganiy, the smuggler better known as ‘Abuga’, aided by men of the Nigerian Customs Service.



According to him, a minimum of 4,500,000kg of rice were being smuggled into the country through the backdoor.

He said, “Within an hour of that tweet, your men in Idi-Iroko received a phone call from Abuja to suspend the thievery.

“Hundreds of rice cars had already crossed the border by then, the rest were forced to make an abrupt about-face.

“I am aware that Najeem Akorede, your man popularly called ‘Najeem Custom’, finally passed the remaining thousand rice cars last night, working in cahoots with ‘Abuga’.”

Soyombo revealed in a post that following his X post on then ongoing smuggling of at least 1500 cars containing rice into Sango and Owode, the operation was now suspended.

He wrote, “I can confirm that following my last tweet about the ongoing smuggling of at least 1500 cars containing rice into Sango and Owode, the operation has now been suspended.

“And it took only one phone call from Abuja to Customs in the said area. Just one phone call.

“This is another proof that once political/leadership willpower is intact, many of our problems are solvable. And when problems seem intractable, it’s because the ruling class is invested!”

Soyombo said that in March, when he addressed how Customs officers were the biggest hoteliers in border areas, “I spotlighted Rao International Hotel and Suites, located along the Idi-Iroko smuggling route, specifically Km 15 Sango-Idi-Iroko Road, owned by ‘Najeem Custom’, equating it to policemen establishing hotels along notorious armed robbery routes.

“This is what has become of the Customs service, a government instrument for enriching a corrupt minority at the expense of public good.

“Sooner or later, all this will have to stop. The only way forward is for the borders to be opened for legitimate rice importation.”

Speaking to newsmen, George urged Tinubu to reduce fuel price from now till January to reduce what he called the “anger and hunger” in the country.

Achieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Deputy National Chairman, Bode George, has called on President Bola Tinubu to reduce the price of premium motor spirit (PMS) also known as petrol to N300 per litre between December and January.

Speaking with newsmen, Bode George said this reduction would enable Nigerians to have a joyous and merry Christmas.

Currently, a litre of fuel is presently sold at about N1,060 in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and up to N1,200 per litre in other parts of the country following the removal of fuel subsidy.

Tinubu had on assumption of office in 2023 declared an end to subsidy which triggered a hike in PMS price first from N198 to N560 and has continued to go up selling at the present rate.

The increase in PMS has triggered inflation currently at 33.88 with prices of goods and services increasing.

Speaking to newsmen, George urged Tinubu to reduce fuel price from now till January to reduce what he called the “anger and hunger” in the country, Daily Trust reports.

He stated that the President could come up with the cost implication of the reduction and seek donation from well-meaning and philanthropic Nigerians.

“Doing this, you would be sending a message of happiness to every home during this Christmas and New Year. This is a challenge I have thrown to him and I know he can do it,” the PDP leader said.

He said Tinubu's wife, Oluremi, could also contribute to the cost of reducing fuel price to N300, adding, “If the First Lady could donate N1billion to a university, she can donate as her contribution to fuel price reduction.”

He reiterated that the reduction in fuel price would reduce the cost of food items and Nigerians would celebrate Christmas in a joyous mood and would be full of prayers for the President during the Yuletide period.

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, Jarrett Tenebe, has defended Governor Monday Okpebholo after the governor faced public backlash for stumbling over budget figures during the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill to the State House of Assembly on Tuesday.

A video of the governor’s budget presentation which shows his repeated attempts to correctly state the budget’s total amount went viral on social media.

In the video, Okpebholo appeared flustered, saying, “The Edo State 2025 Appropriation Bill of 6 billion… 650… 605 billion… 76 thou… 76 million…

“Let me take it again. 506 billion… 605 billion… sorry… 776 billion… sorry, it’s confusing me.”

Reacting to the controversy, Tenebe dismissed the criticism as unfounded, arguing that the governor’s slip-up was a natural human error.

“Social media has been agog with our governor’s budget presentation about a mistake on 650 billion and the rest of it all. It’s a normal thing. Humans make such mistakes, and a lot of people make such mistakes,” he said in a video message shared by Edo Updates on X.com on Wednesday.


Tenebe further claimed that the incident reflected Okpebholo’s integrity, contrasting him with past leaders in the state.

He said, “That is how to know original and innocent people. Monday is not a thief, so he’s not familiar with figures.”

The APC chairman dismissed the backlash, insisting that critics focus on the governor’s performance rather than his error during the presentation.

“He’s the governor of the state, he’s performing, and he will continue to perform. And anybody who does not like his face should go to hell and burn to ashes, period, and thank you,” Tenebe concluded.

The governor on Tuesday presented the proposed budget estimated at N605 billion, which reflected a 25 per cent increase from the 2024 budget.

The Appropriation Bill is titled “Budget of Renewed Hope for a Rising Edo.”

Elder statesman and former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Retd.), has urged northern elites to champion causes that serve the collective interest of Nigeria rather than narrow regional concerns.
Gowon made this call on Wednesday while hosting a delegation from the Senator Ibrahim Shekarau-led League of Northern Democrats (LND) at the Yakubu Gowon Centre in Abuja.
In his address, Gowon emphasized the importance of fostering unity and collaboration across Nigeria’s diverse regions.
“The north must ensure that its actions are in the best interest of Nigeria. My support for the creation of states was driven by the need to address fears of domination and to promote unity among all regions of the country.”
He reflected on his time as Head of State, noting the challenges of maintaining national unity amid regional tensions and secession threats during his administration.
“At that time, the fear of disintegration was palpable across all regions. My decision to advocate for state creation was to mitigate these fears and ensure a balanced federation.”
The elder statesman also explained his deliberate choice to remain neutral in politics, focusing instead on national service.
“My allegiance has always been to Nigeria. I believe in putting the country first and avoiding the distractions of partisan politics. Differences in opinion should never hinder us from working together for the nation’s good.”
Gowon highlighted Nigeria’s diversity as a strength and called on citizens to prioritize unity and collective development.
Addressing the LND delegation, Gowon expressed concern over the current challenges facing northern Nigeria, including insecurity, disunity, and social issues like poverty and drug addiction.
“The activities of groups such as the Lukurawa from Mali have only compounded our problems. However, I am encouraged by your efforts to address these issues and promote unity in the north and across Nigeria.”
The Chairman of the League of Northern Democrats, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, described Gowon as a symbol of unity and resilience. He commended the retired general for his leadership during Nigeria’s most challenging periods and his continued commitment to the nation.
Shekarau explained that the LND was established to address critical challenges facing the north and to reposition it as a leader in political, economic, and cultural spheres within Nigeria.
“LND is not a political party but a platform for patriots to find collaborative solutions to the issues of disunity, poverty, insecurity, and societal value erosion.”
In his closing remarks, Gowon encouraged the LND and other groups to pursue initiatives that promote national unity and development.
“Whatever you do, prioritize the collective good of Nigeria. Collaboration among states is essential, but it should never undermine the nation’s unity. Your efforts give me hope for Nigeria’s future, and I remain at your service.”

A mother of five, Adenike Alabi, has told a Mapo Grade A Customary Court in Ibadan to end her 25-year union with Lukman Alabi on grounds of infidelity and frequent battery.
Alabi, a resident of Egbeda-Tuba area of Ibadan told the court that her partner started beating her immediately after he accused her of being responsible for a miscarriage in 1997.
“My Lord, Lukman turned for the worst when he went further to bring various shapes of ladies into our home to sleep with him.
“When it became difficult for me to bear, as birth attendant, I moved into my clinic to live.
“However, Lukman would come in and destroy my things.
“I reported the matter at the police station and a non-governmental organisation where he was warned. But he didn’t stop beating and destroying my things,” Adenike said.
The petitioner said that no dowry was paid on her, as both of them started cohabiting together after she became pregnant.
‘She stopped caring for me’
In his argument, Lukman said that his wife no longer took care of him because he had lost his means of livelihood.
“Whenever there is any form of disagreement between both of us, my wife will leave our matrimonial bedroom and move to her clinic.
“In fact, she had been advised by the police personnel to quit the marriage if she was no more comfortable, when she reported me at the police station.
“On March 9, she decided to abandon the house when I confronted her with the allegation of promiscuity,” Lukman told the court.
Delivering judgment, the court’s President, Mrs S. M. Akintayo dissolved the cohabitation.
Akintayo held that there was no marriage to be dissolved between her and Lukman because no bride price was paid.
Besides, she said the marriage also lacked other essential requirements considered by the customary law for a valid marriage.
According to Akintayo, the other requirements include the capacity to marry, consent of the parents and presentation of gifts.
She granted custody of the five children produced by the union to the petitioner and ordered Lukman to be responsible for the education and the other welfare of the children.
Akintayo also granted the order restraining Lukman from harassing, disturbing, threatening and interfering in the private life of his ex-partner.
