Amid the ongoing nationwide #EndBadGovernance protest, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday, August 1, met with the Minister of the
Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Wike, dressed in a white suit, drove into the State House, Abuja, in a Prado SUV for the meeting with President Tinubu at about 4pm.
While the exact purpose of Wike’s visit was not disclosed, it comes amidst ongoing protests in the nation’s capital.

The FCT witnessed protests in some parts including around the Central Area, particularly the vicinities of the Eagle Square where protesters defied warnings from security agencies to vacate the area.

Meanwhile, the #EndBadGovernance protest grounded social and economic activities in parts of Wuse 2 area of the FCT as most businesses are shut and vehicular movements reduced.

The Nation observed on Monday that virtually all the businesses along the popular Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent, including banks and other commercial entities in the area did not open for business.

CrimeNigerian Police Arrest Over 50 Protesters Including Women In Bauchi by JAOS(op): 9:30pm On Aug 01, 2024
August 1, 2024
NEWS
The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Muhammad, said the arrests were made due to breaches of public order and unlawful assembly.
No fewer than 50 protesters, including women, have been arrested by the Bauchi State Police Command following the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests in the state capital.
The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Muhammad, said the arrests were made due to breaches of public order and unlawful assembly.
“Fifty-two of them among the protesters were arrested, they were arrested for being violent and very unruly. They tried to disturb the public peace not based on our arrangement with them,” he told Channels TV.
Muhammad stated that one of his police officers was injured and he claimed that the protesters became unruly, engaging in phone theft and property destruction throughout the metropolis.
According to him, the protesters who were over 3000 regrouped after they were dispersed and tried to force their way to the Government House.
“They were stoning our policemen. They have injured some of our policemen so we had to act fast. The governor would have addressed them if they were not unruly.
“We acted professionally and we did not kill anybody. The protesters used women and children as shields but we were able to overcome and subdue them,” the CP said.

BusinessFG To Save $7.9bn Annually From Sale Of Crude Oil To Dangote, Others by JAOS(op): 8:02pm On Jul 29, 2024
The Federal Government is hoping to save about $7.92 billion annually from the sale of crude oil to the nation’s local refineries in naira and thus reduce the pressure on foreign exchange.
This followed the approval on Monday by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for trade among local refineries to be denominated in naira with immediate effect
The Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Zach Adedeji, disclosed this to correspondents after the meeting of the council presided over by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, saying that about $660 million is spent weekly on fuel importation, amounting to about $7.92 billion every year.
He said that the denomination of transactions will stabilise the pump price and make economic predictability reliable.
According to him, it is an innovation geared to solve the country’s problem.
He also disclosed that AFRIBANK has been approved as a settlement bank between Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery for this purpose.

PoliticsAugust 1 Protests: NASS Cuts Short Recess, Holds Emergency Session Wednesday by JAOS(op): 7:51pm On Jul 29, 2024
The National Assembly has recalled its members from annual recess and will hold an emergency plenary session on Wednesday to discuss issues of national importance.
LEADERSHIP gathered from credible sources privy to the development that the decision was not unconnected to the planned August 1 nationwide protests against hardship in the country.
Recall that both Senate and the House of Representatives had last week Tuesday adjourned plenary till September 17, 2024 for lawmakers to observe their annual vacation.
The emergency plenary was disclosed in a notice by the Clerk of the Senate, Francis Akubueze, sent to Senators, saying the plenary will hold by noon on Wednesday.
The memo reads: “The President of the Senate, His Excellency, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, has directed that an emergency plenary sitting of the Senate be convened.
“Distinguished Senators are requested to make all necessary arrangements to attend as issues of national importance will be discussed.

“We regret all the inconveniences that this interruption of the recess will cause. Thanks for your usual understanding.”
Similarly, Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Rep Rotimi Akin Jr. in a statement on Monday, said the plenary will focus on critical matters requiring immediate legislative attention.
Akin noted that it was customary for the House to reconvene from recess to address pressing national issues.
The statement read, “The House of Representatives wishes to announce that, pursuant to the directive of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, PhD., a plenary session has been scheduled for Wednesday, July 31, 2024.
“Honourable Members have been duly summoned from their respective constituencies to attend this crucial session. This directive was communicated through an internal memorandum issued by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, Esq., on Sunday.”
It added, “The House had commenced its annual recess on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The Annual Recess provides Honourable Members with the opportunity to engage extensively with their constituencies, ensuring that the legislative process remains attuned to public input.
“This period also allows for in-depth engagements at the grassroots, facilitating a deeper understanding of the constituents’ needs and priorities.”

PoliticsThere’s No More Need For Planned Hunger Protests – FG by JAOS(op): 7:43pm On Jul 29, 2024
The Federal Government has said there is no longer a need for the planned nationwide hunger protests scheduled for August 1 to 10, 2024.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this while addressing State House correspondents after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Monday presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
Idris stated that the government is already addressing some of the demands made by aggrieved Nigerians, and making efforts to make sure that food is made available.
He said, “Many of the issues that those planning the protest are putting forward are being addressed. The government is making efforts to make sure that food is made available.
“Rice has been taken to various centres across the country, and it is being sold for N40,000. This is just the beginning and necessary first step. Other efforts are underway.
“There is so much investment that is going into the agricultural sector and we believe that as we move forward, the price of food will come down.”
The minister said the president believes that the government is answering the questions being asked by the youths
He added, “The student loan is making sure that no youth that wants to go to school will be left out. By the time the CNG takes full course, the transportation issues will be resolved.”

PoliticsHunger Protest: NSCDC To Deploy 30,000 Personnel Across Nigeria by JAOS(op): 6:24pm On Jul 29, 2024
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps will deploy 30,000 personnel across the country to safeguard critical national assets and infrastructure in response to the planned nationwide hunger protest.
This announcement was made by the NSCDC Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, during a meeting with Commandants and Zonal Commandants at the Corps’ national headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
Audi highlighted the necessity of the deployment due to intelligence reports indicating that criminals may attempt to hijack the protest to cause chaos and harm innocent Nigerians and national infrastructure.
The protest, set to begin on August 1, has been organised by young Nigerians and various civil society groups under the #EndBadGovernance banner.
Nigerians are demonstrating against the soaring cost of living and the perceived failure of President Bola Tinubu’s administration to address economic hardships.
Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, ended the fuel subsidy with the promise of redirecting the funds towards infrastructural development.
However, the policy, along with ongoing security issues in farming regions, has led to increased transportation costs and subsequent food inflation.
While affirming Nigerians’ right to protest, Audi emphasised that the demonstrations must remain peaceful and warned against any destruction of government property.
He assured that the NSCDC would protect peaceful protesters and be prepared to arrest any troublemakers.
The CG said, “Your duty is to ensure the protest is peaceful as we do not want violence, destruction of assets, killings and burning of properties; therefore it behoves you to work within the whims and caprices of the NSCDC Standard Operating Procedures and Code of Ethical Standard.
”Your role is to maintain peace and ensure that government infrastructure, utilities and property are adequately protected from hoodlums who might want to hijack the whole process to carry out their nefarious acts”
“Do not molest or harass any citizen as they protest peacefully knowing fully well that they have the right to protest but they do not have the right to destroy government properties.
“Based on the foregoing I have ordered the deployment of no fewer than 30,000 personnel nationwide which includes Intelligence and other Tactical Units across all formations; the Zonal Commanders and all State Commandants in the 36 States and FCT are to supervise their personnel and monitor the protest with a view of ensuring the protection of lives and property as well as securing the nation’s critical assets and infrastructure.”
The NSCDC boss expressed the corps’ readiness for the protest and stated that the meeting aimed to finalise strategies for the deployment.
He also urged Nigerians to be patient with Tinubu’s administration, which he claimed is working hard to improve living conditions and appealed to parents to discourage their wards from participating in the protest.
