SportsMourinho Agrees With Wenger Over FIFA Ballon D'or by japsyvic(op): 6:42am On Apr 10, 2015
There have been no love lost between Mourinho and
Wenger, with their feud starting during Mourinho first stint at
Stamford Bridge when he described Wenger as a “Viewer” over
comments he made about Chelsea.
Mourinho also termed Wenger “specialist in failure” last
season, while the Frenchman shoved his opposite number
following a touchline disagreement during October’s Premier
League contest at west London.
Buh it seems both of them would for once agree to
Wenger’s assessment – made public in January – that he
would not cast a vote for the prestigious Ballon d’Or award
because he believes individual achievements are taking away
from the team collective.
He said to the Telegraph “I think Wenger said something
that is interesting, he is against the Ballon d’Or and I think
he’s right, because in this moment football is losing a little bit
the concept of the team to focus more on the individual,”
"We are always looking at the individual performance, the
individual stat, the player that runs more. Because you run 11
kilometres in a game and I run nine you did a better job than I
did? Maybe not! Maybe my nine kilometres were more
important than your 11."
"For me, football is collective. The individual is welcome if
you want to make our group better. But you have to work for
us, not we have to work for you.
"When the top player arrives, the team is already there. It’s
not him who comes to discover the team, like (Christopher)

PhonesReducing Mobile Data Usage by japsyvic(op): 8:23pm On Apr 05, 2015
Data guzzlers like me certainly can’t depend on the regular mobile data, otherwise, I will have to break the bank. But then, what happens if your Internet service provider is not available in a particular location like I have experienced in Lagos, Nigeria’s tech capital a number of times? In this case, you will have no choice but to resort to using your phone’s mobile data because the telecommunications companies have far more reach than regular Internet/broadband service providers. Mobile data, of course, is not cheap. In my case, I rather move around with a mobile wifi which I find a lot more cost effective. That brings me to the point of the cost of Internet service, which in my opinion is still expensive but I must admit that it is a lot better than what it was a few years ago.

For you to reduce your cost of data usage, you need to adopt some strategies whenever possible. Your smartphone is capable of consuming all your Internet data without you realising it especially if you use Android. This may be from the data-hungry apps that are always running in the background or simply because of default configurations of your phone that you are unaware of.

There are, however, several techniques that you can adopt to ensure your data usage is reduced. Below are some of the tips you may want to try out:

Switch off mobile data on your smartphone when you are not using the Internet

The first natural way to prevent data usage is to switch off the mobile data on your phone. There are instances when you do not use your smartphone for a particular period of time; for instance when you are sleeping, driving or attending a meeting. All you need to do is to move to the notification panel on your smartphone and switch the mobile data option off if it is an Android smartphone. If you are an iPhone user, then go to Setting > General > Mobile data and turn off the mobile data. You can switch the mobile data off to prevent too much data usage during the period. You need to be sure, however, that you are not anticipating an important e-mail that you will not be able to check if you are not connected to Internet.

Limit background data

There are a number of apps on your smartphones that are working in the background, consuming your Internet data without you even realising it. Of course, a few apps will possibly not consume that much—but multiple apps or services can rapidly accumulate to a data burn. Several apps and services, for example, Facebook and Email are continuously syncing and checking for updates.

Major mobile operating systems such as Android and iOS permit you to limit background data. To restrict data in an Android device, just go to the Setting and select Data usage and then scroll down to observe the amount of data each app has used. Just click on it to get more details. If you will like it to halt refreshing in the background, just check the Restrict Background Data box. In case, you are an iOS user, then go to Settings > General and press Background App Refresh button. Here, you can easily turn Background Refresh off for all apps and services, or you can just scroll down and select the apps that you do not want to refresh in the background.

Frugally use ‘free chat applications’

You may think that chat applications are free and do not use data but the fact is, these free chat applications have the potential of consuming a large amount of your Internet data. Whether you use Google’s Hangouts or Apple’s iMessage or third-party apps such as WhatsApp or TextFree, these apps can eat up a large chunk of your data. If you send basic texts, you don’t need to worry so much. However, a large amount of data will be consumed, if you send pictures or videos via these applications.

Use Wi-Fi to download large files

Unless absolutely required, you ought to avoid downloading massive files such as songs or videos while using mobile data. Instead, you should download such large files at a future time when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Website data compression

Some web pages may not be optimised for mobile devices and may consume a great deal of your mobile data as well as several other websites that may eat up your Internet data via a lot of advertisements. You can simply prevent this by making use of mobile browsers that enable data to be compressed. Mobile Web browsers such as Google Chrome and Opera Mini have the options to shrink the data from a web page just before it is sent to your smartphone or tablet. It may not work for protected connection websites like online banking. However, for most of the websites, it will make smart use of each megabyte. Note that you may need to change the browser’s settings to enable this option.

Visit the mobile version of websites

Whenever you visit a website from your smartphone, each element, from the text to the videos, needs to be downloaded just before it is shown. It is not a big issue when visiting the website from your home PC using the broadband connection, but on your mobile device, it is a big problem.

Most of the sites now offer both a desktop and a mobile version. The mobile version always includes very fewer photos and videos and is much lighter and quicker to load. Several websites are setup to identify if you are visiting from a mobile device and will redirect to the mobile version instantly. If you think you are visiting a desktop version of a website on your smartphone, then check to see if there is any link to a mobile version. Generally, you can get the link at the bottom of the webpage.

You are sure to enjoy considerable savings on your mobile data by applying the above strategies. Do let me know via email or SMS, if you find these tips useful. Remember to join me on Tech Trends on Channels TV (www.CFA.ng/tv) by 4.30pm on Monday..

PoliticsPolice Shut Ekiti Assembly As APC Lawmakers Resume by japsyvic(op): 8:48am On Apr 03, 2015
There was tension in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, on
Wednesday as the embattled 19 All Progressives Congress
lawmakers stormed the House of Assembly to resume
legislative duties.
Their return caught workers and the seven Peoples
Democratic Party lawmakers loyal to Governor Ayodele Fayose
unawares and created tension as officials of the Assembly
hurriedly vacated their offices.
The return of the lawmakers followed Tuesday’s directive by
the state’s secretariat of the APC asking them to resume
legislative duties.
But over 100 soldiers and police operatives promptly took over
the Assembly to maintain peace while the Commissioner of
Police, Taiwo Lakanu, ordered an immediate closure of the

SportsMoses, Anichebe Up For Sale by japsyvic(op): 8:30am On Apr 03, 2015
Nigeria internationals, Victor Moses and Victor Achebe, may
not be sure where they will be when the 2015/16 kicks off but
what may be certain for the Victors is that they will not be in
their current clubsides.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has signified that he will sell
Moses in the summer to allow him buy Raphael Varane. The
Nigeria international is currently at Stoke City on a season-
long loan deal and this may be the opportunity for the team
to land him on a permanent deal as Mark Hughes wants to
keep the attacker at the Britannia Stadium on a permanent
basis.
A Daily Mail report suggested that Mourinho was set to let go
Moses in order to help Chelsea overcome Financial Fair Play
restrictions administered by the European football governing
body, UEFA, in the transfer market.
The Nigerian signed for the Stamford Bridge team from Wigan
in 2012, but spent last season on loan at Liverpool before his
move to Stoke earlier in the current campaign.
Hughes admitted in February that he hoped to keep Moses
beyond the end of the season, saying, “Victor is still a Chelsea
player, we’re very pleased with what he’s producing.
“We have given him the opportunity and he’s in a good place.
We’d ideally love to be able to take him if we can but that
won’t be our decision. Things have to fall in place but if there
was an opportunity to bring Victor next season we’d love to
do it.
“It will be discussed at the end of the season; we will see how
far it can go. But his profile is being raised so it is a two-
edged sword.
“A loan could be a compromise. The key would be to try and
find a way to keep him here next season.
“Would he get the opportunity his talents deserve back at
Chelsea? We like to think we would be a consideration for him
almost certainly.”
At West Brom, Tony Pulis is planning a major overhaul of his
squad this summer – with Anichebe and Youssouf Mulumbu
the chief casualties , Sun day People reports.
Baggies chief Pulis is looking to move on around six fringe
players as he aims to re-shape his squad at the end of the
season.
And £5m signing Anichebe, along with combative midfielder
Mulumbu, top the list as Pulis further stamps his mark on the
Black Country club he took over in January following the
sacking of Alan Irvine.
Anichebe has been more miss than hit following his switch
from Everton in 2013.
Pulis also believes that Mulumbu is surplus now that he has
Darren Fletcher fit and firing in the heart of his engine room.
Several others are earmarked for an exit. Andre Wisdom, on a
season’s loan from Liverpool, will be sent back to Anfield and
decisions have yet to be taken on the futures of Brown Ideye
and Jonas Olsson.

PoliticsVictory For The Nigerian Electorate by japsyvic(op): 4:40pm On Apr 01, 2015

Democracy is all about the people; their dreams and desires, their aims and aspirations as well as their collective mandate. That, they do by freely exercising their franchise at the polls during elections; to vote in candidates of their choice. But in doing so, they believe in the key element of trust; that the elected politicians would identify their most crucial needs. And muster the wisdom, vision, courage and compassion to meet those crying needs through selfless service. That makes it a socio-political contract.

More often than not however, not a few politicians here in Nigeria view their exalted positions as platforms for self-aggrandisement, greed for money and material acquisition thereby neglecting the people whose valid votes saw them to their plum positions. The people so cruelly and criminally relegated to the shadows wait patiently till the next set of elections to express their power. Of course, the constitutional responsibility of seeing that their votes count rests squarely on the shoulders of the electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission.

While the general opinion is that the Attahiru Jega-led Commission has substantially improved on the conduct of elections since 2011, the obvious hiccups that characterised the 2015 presidential poll were most unfortunate, as they were all clearly avoidable lapses.Talk about logistic challenges resulting in the late arrival of voting materials, the failure of the controversial card readers across the land and the shoddy behaviour of some ad hoc staff. Yet, the Nigerian voters in their millions trooped out of their homes, enduring the rigours and drudgery of queuing up for hours to perform their civic duties. Men and women including pregnant ones, the aged and young all stood under the scorching sun and sometimes suffered from the whipping rain. This piece is therefore, in honour of the Nigerian electorate, for keeping faith with the dictates of democracy.

For instance, in Ebonyi State people queued up till night to vote in their candidates. So it was in Nasarawa, Plateau and Taraba, where voting ended in some parts at 2.00 a.m. on Sunday. Elections had to be postponed in some states, including Lagos where in parts of Oworonsoki people had to wait up till the evening of Sunday.

Beyond the blame game, INEC should have performed much better given the fact that it had four good years to prepare for these crucial elections. Had it gone ahead with the elections on February 14, they would have been a complete disaster. This calls for a lot of proactive measures to be put in place while planning for the April 11, elections. It should be able to project how many vehicles would be required to transport the sensitive and non-sensitive materials; the nature of the terrains to be covered across the hills and also the waterways. The training of the logistics and supply staff has become imperative. This, in addition to tidying up contract arrangements with members of the road transport union, would stem the recurring decimal of the undue delay in the delivery of electoral materials. That the menace reared its ugly head at places such as Utako, Jabi and Karu on the outskirts of Abuja is simply inexcusable. That such a delay led to the beating up of an INEC official at Jalingo and the victim had to be rushed to hospital for treatment necessitates more preventive mechanisms.

Furthermore, INEC has to partner both the political parties and the media in voter education. This should start months before elections with the content of some jingles and handbills presented in the local languages. It should also desist from experimenting with new technology during a nationwide election of this magnitude. Though Jega claims that only an inconsequential 0.25 per cent of the card readers proved faulty, the sheer waste of precious time its use caused in some states could well have been prevented.

And still on the hazards of new technology, the gross misuse of the social media calls for urgent concern. Yours truly, out of a patriotic concern had on Friday, March 27, 2015, urged fellow citizens through my Facebook page to desist from posting fake, fictitious and frivolous election results on social media. One had reiterated that only INEC has the constitutional mandate to do so. But the mischievous ones would not heed the caution. As of Sunday, there were several of such going viral and throwing some people into frenzied dance of victory while INEC had yet to announce any candidate as the eventual winner!

This sordid and sad development calls for a bill to be sent by INEC to the National Assembly barring any Nigerian from posting part or full election results online, with appropriate sanctions to offenders as it happens in China. The misuse of the social media has gone beyond the boundary of decency. One has cautioned several times that while Facebook and the like provide veritable avenues to express one’s opinion, it is the height of insanity and dishonour for people to call national leaders unprintable names for whatever reason. Too bad, that some sitting governors, who ordinarily should act as role models – both in words and action – have used the political podium to cast aspersions on opponents instead of selling their party’s manifestoes to the electorate. The senseless use of uncouth language is not only unAfrican but desecrates their exalted positions. Such politicians were simply undeserving of their vantage positions, at least on moral grounds.

There must be legal frameworks in place to rein in the demons of democracy from rising to occupy public offices. And that includes any Nigerian facing allegations of financial impropriety. One lesson learnt is that the cost of accessing political office is too high and injurious to the economy. Above all, Nigerian voters and the security forces have amply demonstrated their faith in democracy. The victory therefore, belongs to them all.

HealthPesticides In Fruits Linked To Semen Quality by japsyvic(op): 10:05am On Apr 01, 2015
The first study to investigate the relationship between eating fruit and vegetables containing pesticide residues and the quality of men’s semen has shown a link with lower sperm counts and percentages of normally-formed sperm.

The study, which is published online Tuesday in Human Reproduction shows that men who ate the highest amount of fruit and vegetables with high levels of pesticide residue had a 49 per cent lower sperm count and a 32 per cent lower percentage of normally-formed sperm than men who consumed the least amount. An accompanying editorial says the findings have important implications for human health.

However, the study of 155 men showed that, overall, the total amount of fruit and vegetables consumed was unrelated to changes in any measurements of semen quality in the group as a whole.

Assistant Professor of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Jorge Chavarro, said: “These findings should not discourage the consumption of fruit and vegetables in general. In fact, we found that total intake of fruit and vegetables was completely unrelated to semen quality. This suggests that implementing strategies specifically targeted at avoiding pesticide residues, such as consuming organically-grown produce or avoiding produce known to have large amounts of residues, may be the way to go.”

Previous studies have shown that occupational exposure to pesticides might have an effect on semen quality, but so far there has been little investigation of the effects of pesticides in diet.

Prof Chavarro, his student Dr. Yu-Han Chiu and colleagues analysed 338 semen samples from 155 men attending a fertility centre between 2007-2012 as part of the ongoing, prospective “Environment and Reproductive Health” Study. The men were eligible for the study if they were aged 18-55, had not had a vasectomy, and were part of a couple planning to use their own eggs and sperm for fertility treatment.

The men’s diet was assessed by means of a food frequency questionnaire, and they were asked how often, on average, they had consumed how many portions of fruit and vegetables, using standard portion sizes such as one apple, or half an avocado.

The fruit and vegetables were categorised as being high, moderate or low in pesticide residues based on data from the annual United States Department of Agriculture Pesticide Data Programme. Fruit or vegetables that were low in pesticide residues included peas, beans, grapefruit and onions. Those that had high residues included peppers, spinach, strawberries, apples and pears. These data took account of usual practice in food preparation, such as whether the fruit and vegetables had been peeled and washed.

The researchers divided the men into four groups, ranging from those who ate the greatest amount of fruit and vegetables high in pesticides residues (1.5 servings or more a day) to those who ate the least amount (less than half a serving a day). They also looked at men who ate fruit and vegetables with low-to-moderate pesticide residues.

The group of men with the highest intake of pesticide-heavy fruit and vegetables had an average total sperm count of 86 million sperm per ejaculate compared to men eating the least who had an average of 171 million sperm per ejaculate – a 49 per cent reduction. The percentage of normally formed sperm was an average of 7.5 per cent in men in the group with the lowest intake and 5.1 per cent in the men with the highest intake – a relative decrease of 32 per cent.

There were no differences seen between men in the four groups who consumed fruit and vegetables with low-to-moderate pesticide residues. In fact, there was a significant trend towards having a higher percentage of normally shaped sperm among men who consumed the most fruit and vegetables with low pesticide residues – a relative increase of 37 per cent from 5.7 per cent to 7.8 per cent.

PoliticsBuhari Thanks Nigerians, Calls For Sober Reflection by japsyvic(op): 9:10am On Apr 01, 2015
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the just-
concluded elections, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.),
has expressed gratitude to Nigerians for voting him and his
party to steer the ship of state for the next four years.
Buhari said this in an interim message of gratitude to
Nigerians in Abuja, on Tuesday.
This was contained in a statement signed by the Director of
Media and Publicity of the APC campaign, Mallam Garba
Shehu.
In the message, Buhari thanked Nigerians “for choosing him
and his party over and above the PDP and their candidate, the
incumbent President, Dr Jonathan Goodluck.”
The APC statement said it “declared victory after Dr.
Jonathan called General Buhari at 5:15pm to make a
concession and congratulate the winner.”
Shehu quoted Buhari as saying the mood of the country as
well as its current state did not warrant the type of wild
celebrations reportedly going on in some cities across the
country.
“Buhari said anybody happy with the victory of the APC in the
presidential election will not be involved in the molestation of
opponents or the destruction of their property.
“He or she is not with me, whoever does that,” Buhari curtly
said.
He is expected to make a major acceptance speech at 11 am
today after the Chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, might have
officially declared him as the winner of the March 28
presidential election.

The friendly match between the U23 teams of Brazil and
Paraguay ended 4-1 for the Selecao. Apart from the five
goals, the game produced one bizarre bittersweet highlight
involving Anderson Talisca scoring Brazil’s last goal of the
game.
The Brazilian youngster, also playing for Portuguese Benfica
scored his goal with a fine header but fraction of a second
later was down on the floor as he collided heads with the
onrushing Paraguay defender.
Talisca was taken to the local hospital as a precaution but was released soon afterwards. The rising star has rejoined
his teammates in the preparations for their friendly game against Mexico.
