The Federal Government has approved N2.3 trillion stimulus contained in the Nigeria Economic Sustainability Plan (NESP) as recommended by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo- led Economic Sustainability Committee (ESC). The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Hajiya Zainab Ahmed, announced this on Wednesday after a virtual Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari. Hajiya Ahmed, while briefing State House Correspondents after the federal cabinet meeting, said the FEC approved the NESP report. The N2.3 trillion stimulus plan is approved to support the Nigerian economy in the face of the disruptions and challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NESP is a 12-month ‘Transit’ Plan between the The Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and the ERGP-successor-plan currently being worked upon. She said: “The total package that we presented today is in the sum of N2.3 trillion, N500 billion of this is a stimulus package that is already provided for in the amended in the 2020 Appropriations Act. These are funds that we have sourced from special accounts. We also have N1.2 trillion of this funds to be sourced as structured low cost loans which are interventionary from the Central Bank of Nigeria as well as other development partners and institutions. “We have N344 billion that will be sourced from bilateral and external sources and also additional funds that we can sourced locally. “There is a strategy that has been adopted and this whole plan is to enable us respond to the triple problem of low exchange rate, youth unemployment as well as negative growth which is facing us now. “The plan has to also support small businesses that have suffered severe impact of COVID-19 as a result of lockdowns. Specially, the hotel industry, private schools, restaurants as well as the transport sector have been very well impacted by this. “We have also seen a significant impact on the poor and the vulnerable and even people that were okay as small traders, have been hard hit by stand still that we witnessed as a result of lockdowns. “Council was able to take our reports and the interventions in the plan is that we prevent businesses from collapsing and also to infuse liquidity around the Nigerian economy, to create jobs using labour intensive methods such as agriculture, facility management, housing, construction, direct labour interventions that will create a lot of jobs very quickly. “We had also proposed in the plan to undertake growth enhancing jobs, creating infrastructure investments in roads, bridges, solar power, communications technology and several others. “We have promoted in the plan manufacturing and local production at all levels, we are advocating for the use of made in Nigeria in all of these public works that we will be doing as a way of cresting jobs opportunities to enhance jobs sufficiency. “So, we expect for road construction for instance, we expect the minister of works not buy bitumen but to consider the use of gemstones and cement or other materials that can be used here, that way we converse our resources and will also be able to ignite other sectors within the economy. “The same thing for housing as well. The design is to have 300,000 houses built using standard designs that will be done by the ministry of works and housing but using strictly low cost materials. On the building sites, the plan is to have carpenters and others that will have multiplier effect on the economy. “The third pillar for us is to ensure rigorous implementation and this is important because this is a 12 Month plan that is meant to pull our economy from sliding into a deep recession. It will also be a plan that will anchor to the successor period that we have already started working on. “It is a 12-month plan, a transit plan meant to be implemented quickly. To that effect, the federal executive council has agreed that the procurement processes become relaxed in a manner that we are adopting a faster mood as opposed to using the longer procurement process. With the National Assembly passing the budget, we have funding ready to go but we need procurement to be done quickly so that this money can be put to immediate use.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fec-approves-n2-3trn-stimulus-plan.html |

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday expressed some concern over the feasibility of the Eco regional currency, saying the countries are now “at a crossroads” over the project. Buhari, was quoted in a statement issued by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, as expressing Nigeria’s position on the proposed regional currency at a virtual extraordinary meeting of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the West African Monetary Zone (WAMZ). The meeting discussed the implementation of the ECOWAS Monetary Cooperation Programme (EMCP) and the ECOWAS Single Currency Agenda. He said: “My dear colleagues, Heads of State and Government, It is obvious that we are at a crossroads. “We must proceed with caution and comply with the agreed process of reaching our collective goal, while treating each other with utmost respect. Without these, our ambitions for a strategic Monetary Union as an ECOWAS bloc could very well be in serious jeopardy”, Buhari cautioned. The President warned that the ambition for Eco regional currency could be in ‘serious jeopardy,’ unless member states complied with agreed processes of reaching the collective goal. He particularly expressed concern over the decision of Francophone countries that form the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) to replace the CFA Franc with Eco ahead of the rest of member-states. He recalled: “Your Excellences, you all are familiar with the history of the Eco thus far, so I will not bore you with that. We reverted to a single track approach, giving up Eco, which is the original idea of the WAMZ so the ECOWAS-wide programme could thrive. “In this regard, we have made remarkable progress including the adoption of the Exchange Rate regime, the name and model of the common Central Bank and the symbol. “We have urged our ministers towards an expeditious path to success. It, therefore, gives me an uneasy feeling that the UEMOA Zone now wishes to take up the Eco in replacement for its CFA Franc ahead of the rest of the member-states. “This is in addition to deviating from the Community Act on a consistent attainment of convergence in the three years running up to the introduction of the currency, and our subsequent reinforcing directives”, Buhari added. He, however, assured the ECOWAS leaders of Nigeria’s commitment to the single currency and urged them to critically consider the recommendations made by the Convergence Council and take a common position to safeguard the West African Monetary Zone from the pitfalls of a questionable union. The ECOWAS leaders resolved to convene an enlarged meeting of the regional bloc on the single currency issue, following the caution raised by Nigeria and some other member-countries at the meeting. Muslims expressed disappointment Tuesday at Saudi Arabia’s decision to scale back this year’s hajj pilgrimage, but many accepted it was necessary as the kingdom battles a major coronavirus outbreak. Around 1,000 people residing in Saudi Arabia will be allowed to perform Islam’s main pilgrimage this year, authorities said — compared to some 2.5 million from around the world last year. The move had looked inevitable for some time and several countries had already pulled out, but the announcement added to disappointment of Muslims, many of whom invest huge sums and wait years to perform the rite. “My hopes of going to (the holy Saudi city of Mecca) were so high,” said Kamariah Yahya, 68, from Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, which had already barred its citizens from the hajj earlier this month. “I’ve been preparing for years. But what can I do? This is Allah’s will — it’s destiny.” Shahid Rafique, chairman of a Pakistani hajj tour operators’ group, said it was “a moment of sorrow for all the Muslims, especially for those who were making plans for years and years”. “Professionally, it is a big loss for us, for all the private hajj organisers, and we may not be able to recover from this loss for many years,” he said. But in Iran, where authorities are battling the Middle East’s deadliest COVID-19 outbreak, many backed the decision. Retired public transport worker Abdollah Pouyan pointed to an upswing in cases and deaths from the disease in the Islamic Republic in recent weeks, saying “this is all because of large gatherings”. “When it gets really busy, when there are so many people there, can they really control the situation or maintain social distancing?” he asked. “Overall, this is for the benefit of everyone.” Worshippers at a mosque in Tunis also approved of a move by Tunisian authorities to postpone the hajj in line with the Saudi decision. “God willing, it’ll be for next year… These are exceptional conditions and it’s also for their protection,” worshipper Mohamed-Amine said. – ‘Shattered’ – In Bangladesh, the head of a hajj travel agencies’ group said many people would be “shattered” by the decision, but accepted it was for the best. “Unlike other countries, the majority of Bangladeshi pilgrims are elderly people, and they are vulnerable to COVID-19,” Shahadat Hossain Taslim said. India’s minister for minority affairs said more than 200,000 people from the country had applied to go on the five-day event, scheduled for the end of July, and they would receive a full refund of any money deposited for the pilgrimage. A requirement for able-bodied Muslims at least once in their lifetime, the hajj pilgrimage sees millions of people pack into congested religious sites. Many feared it could have become a major source of virus transmission. Saudi citizen Yazeed Daajani told AFP more “precautions and organisation” were in place for this year’s hajj than in previous years. Officials in the kingdom, where virus cases have surpassed 161,000, say the pilgrimage will be limited to those below 65 years of age and with no chronic illnesses. Pilgrims will be tested for the virus before arriving in Mecca, and will be required to quarantine at home afterwards, they said. But some Muslims had opposed moves to shut down the event altogether. “The hajj is one of the rituals of Islam, so there’s no reason for cancelling or postponing it,” said Ahmed al-Khoury, 29, a Jordanian living in Riyadh. “There are precautions that can be followed to stem the spread of the virus, whether it’s during the hajj or during any other rituals of Islam.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/muslims-disappointed-but-accepting-as-saudi-scales-back-hajj.html |
A delegation of the Senate, led by majority leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi, on Monday, visited Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to commiserate with Governor Babagana Zulum over recent killings by Boko Haram terrorists in Gubio local government area and other places. The delegation comprised of Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu; Deputy minority whip, Senator Yahaya Alhaji Yawu; Senator Kashim Shettima, Senator Mohamed Ali Ndume and Senator Abubakar Kyari. The Senate’s delegation was received by Governor Zulum at the government house, after the Deputy Governor, Umar Usman Kadafur, led a welcoming team at the Maiduguri international airport. Speaking on behalf of the senate at the council chamber of the government house in Maiduguri, Senator Yahaya assured that no stone will be left unturned in an effort to get lasting peace in the nation. He added that the Nigerian Senate, in a resolution, had directed the Senate President to meet President Muhammadu Buhari to lay on his table the security situation in the country. In view of that, the Senate President on Monday met President Buhari in the state house, where security issues were squarely brought to the President. “I want to assure you that very soon efforts will be seen to have been done for Nigeria to get itself off this insurgency and banditry,” Senator Yahaya assured. The Senate leader also said the Nigerian Senate had pledged to support the executive in approving security budgets to provide the administration with the necessary resources for the security agencies to secure the people. Senator Yahaya commended governor Babagana Zulum for his efforts in restoring peace in Borno. Senator Yahaya said: “Your Excellency, we all know and acknowledge the whole nation is quite aware and very grateful of the kind of effort that you have made and the brave journeys of work that you have undertaken, all in an effort to secure the people of your state and the entire northeast zone. “Your Excellency, you have demonstrated a lot of courage, sense of purpose to uphold dignity and honour of the people of your state. “We want to use this opportunity to thank you very much and encourage you to brave all odds so that all of us will be rid of this threat.” Yahaya also led the delegation in company of governor Zulum to pay homage to the Shehu of Borno, His Royal Highness, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Umar Garbai Elkanemi, at the Shehu’s palace. On his part, Zulum while welcoming the delegation, acknowledged the support of the National Assembly towards the development of the northeast zone. The governor equally extended his appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for maintaining stability in the northeast. “Notwithstanding the recent happening in Borno, the situation cannot be compared to what is obtained, particularly between the year 2011 to 2014. “However, the recent spontaneous attacks in Borno is a matter of great concern to all of us. “The nexus between security and peace need not to be overemphasized, if there is no peace, there is no security and if there is no security, there is no development,” Zulum said. The governor, however, lamented the continuous inaccessibility of citizens to their farmlands which he said has became a serious challenge facing the state. “In fact, the people of Borno State are facing a very serious challenge, worthy to note is that of a limited access to farmlands by our people. “We have to address the root causes of the insurgency which are not limited to endemic poverty, pervasive illiteracy, unemployment, environmental degradation among others. “Continuous dependence on food supply from the INGOs and the UN agencies is not sustainable. “The only option we have is to create an enabling environment to our people to regain their means of livelihood,” Zulum said. Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State says the All Progressives Congress (APC) will win the September 19, 2020 governorship election of Edo State despite his feeling for “painful” exit of Governor Godwin Obaseki to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Governor Bello said this on Monday while fielding questions from journalists after a meeting of Governors of the North-central states with the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari. The meeting was attended by Governors of Kogi, Bello, Niger, Sani Bello; Kwara, Abdulhahman Abdulrazak; Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule; and Plateau, Simon Lalong. The governor, who spoke on the APC crisis, said: “Our party is one solid party. “In a particular big family like that, you won’t rule out any misunderstanding in one way or the other. “But I can assure you that our party is strong under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari and as a father, he is already looking into it and I can assure you that we are going to come out very strong. “We are going to go to Edo State and we shall win Edo state election overwhelmingly for APC, we are going to go to Ondo state and win it overwhelmingly for APC. “We will take Anambra State and record it as a second APC state from the South East and integrate our Igbo brothers into the fold and we are going to take Ekiti and Osun once again. “So, we are going to continue to expand our coast. “So, APC is strong we are not divided, we are only seeing one same point from different angle and we are trying to make ourselves understand the points, that is just it, there is no misunderstanding.” Asked whether he was afraid of the power of incumbency in Edo State, Governor Bello said: “We have seen those in power before that are dethroned, we have seen practically that President Muhammadu Buhari of APC dethrone PDP, the former President that was on seat. So, that is not any trouble at all. “APC is going to win Edo State. But unfortunately, I really felt the leaving of my colleague, His Excellency governor Godwin Obaseki in whatever circumstance to another political party, it is painful anyway, but as a political party we are going to take it back.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/its-painful-obaseki-left-us-but-apc-will-win-edo-yahaya-bello.html |

The Federal Government says it has released the sum of N4.5 billion to 31 teaching and special hospitals across the country. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, disclosed this on Friday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, after briefing President Muhammadu Buhari on the ongoing industrial action embarked upon by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD). Ngige, who addressed State House reporters in the company of the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, and the Minister of State, Labour, Festus Keyamo, said the payment was for the arrears of April and May hazard and inducement allowances. He said the allowances for June would also be paid. He said: “Just this morning, before we went to see Mr President, the Ministry of Finance reported that as at this morning, 3am, they have paid the allowances for hazard and inducement to 31 teaching and Federal Medical Centres and special hospitals of the federal government service and they have expended close to N4.5 billion in the payment because we are paying them the arrears of April and May. “The payment for June will also be done immediately these ones are sorted out. “Again, it’s important to report to you that in consonance with what he’s saying, we have arranged a meeting for them to speak to the Nigerian Governors’ Forum because you don’t mix apples and oranges. “The issue of health is on the concurrent list, so the federal government will do its own and the state government will be expected to do their own. “Some of their grievances border on what they feel the state governments have not done.” Daily Trust reports that doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Monday commenced a nationwide indefinite strike. This was communicated in a communiqué issued after the association’s virtual National Executive Council meeting, where it said it resolved to proceed on the strike from 12:01am Monday with the exemption of its members attending to COVID-19 patients at designated COVID -19 treatment and isolation centres. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo did not call for the suspension of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Osinbajo’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande, made this known on Tuesday via his Twitter account, @akandeoj. “It’s the paramilitary orientation camping that is being considered to be suspended for at least 24 months, NOT deployment to primary assignment ie the longer part of NYSC programme would NOT be affected in case this idea is okayed,” he wrote in reaction to a story published by an online medium that Economic Sustainability Committee, ESC recommended the suspension of NYSC for two years. The committee in its report submitted by Osinbajo to President Muhammadu Buhari last week, recommended the direct mobilisation of prospective corps members to their places of primary assignment. It stated that prospective corps members should be made to skip the camping exercise as part of measures to stop the spread of coronavirus. The plan recommended the interim suspension of the three-week paramilitary camping that precedes deployment to places of primary assignments. “The immediate focus in the Education sector is to address the disruptions caused by the pandemic and ensuring social distancing measures at all levels of education. “Practical steps will be taken to minimise disruption to learning, utilising technology as appropriate. “Specifically, virtual learning will be implemented (either online or through broadcast), virtual convocation ceremonies or issuance of certificates (with postponed ceremonies) should be implemented to continue educational progression. “In similar context, consideration will be given to suspending the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp Exercises for at least 24 months while allowing deployments to places of primary assignment. “This will ensure that there is no backlog in the National Service placement pipeline,” the committee recommended in its report. The disqualification of incumbent governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, by the screening panel of the All Progressives Congress, APC led by Prof. Jonathan Ayuba, from participating at the party’s June 22 governorship primary in the state, certainly did not come as a surprise to many political watchers. Compounding Obaseki’s woes, the National Working Committee of the party, led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, whom he had been having a running battle with, adopted the reports of both the screening panel and the appeal committee. The adoption completely foreclosed any possibility for him to contest a second term during the September poll on the ruling party’s platform. Before any squabble between Oshiomhole and his political godson in 2016, the former labour leader campaigned vigorously for his successor. At that stage, he threw tantrums at his then opponent, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu of People’s Democratic Party, who is now believed to be the consensus candidate of the ruling APC for September 2020 gubernatorial election. Daily Trust compiles twelve remarks Oshiomhole made in support of Obaseki in 2016: 1. God knows that Godwin comes from a large family in Benin Kingdom, he went to school, he finished his secondary school, he went to University of Ibadan, he finished, there were no issues, he finished in flying colours. 2. He went to the U. S., he did his Masters, he came back home, started helping people to set up businesses, he helped to manage businesses, he helped to set up many banks including several second-generation banks. 3. I don’t care if Obaseki betrays me at the end of the day, Obaseki’s allegiance should be to the people and not me. 4. The oath of office he is going to subscribe to says that he will defend the constitution of Nigeria, he will do everything to uplift the quality of life of Edo people. Nothing in his oath of office will include ‘I shall not betray my predecessor’ because I have no interest to be betrayed. 5. Obaseki had been part of the tradition, he knows the vision, he knows the mission, he knows the target, he knows where we are, he knows the challenges, and he knows how to overcome them. 6. He sits in the office of the economic team which he built using his network of friends inside the heart of government house without demanding one naira. 7. I know my limit. He knows his limit. Godwin Obaseki has worked for seven and half years for the people of Edo state, using his brain, creativity, quietly, not making noise. 8. A man like Obaseki, who will not ask me to give him contracts, but will promise me, comrade, you just do the thinking, we will create the means to actualise your thoughts. 9. And to his credit today, check the books of Edo state, we did not build new structures in government house with government money. That economic team office was built through Godwin’s network. Today, it remains a permanent asset of the state government. 10. I want us to be calling that building Godwin Obaseki building. I don’t see your opponent Ize-Iyamu being able to say that. 11. In 2007, check the records, Ize-Iyamu was hiding from EFCC. He did not vote. How can somebody who didn’t vote claim that he made me. 12. If you have to look at Godwin and his credentials and you look at a man (Ize-Iyamu) whose only work, by his CV, was a student and rusticated for two years, he read law but he is not a barrister. Gov Darius Ishaku of Taraba on Sunday lifted for one week, the lockdown imposed on the state as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Alhaji Hassan Mijinyawa, his Chief Press Secretary, said in a statement that the measure was to enable free movement as political parties conduct their primary elections ahead of the June 30 local council polls. He however said that the state would return to the imposed lockdown after the one week grace, with the exception of Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. ”Gov Ishaku has approved with immediate effect, the addition of Monday to the number of days allowed for free human and vehicular movements within the state under the state governments current COVID-19 lockdown policy. “However, because of the period given by the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), for political parties in the State to conduct their party primaries for the forth-coming Local Government Council elections, movements will be allowed throughout this week. “This is to enable people travelling long distances before and after the elections, to get to their destinations without hindrance. “It is also important to reiterate once again that the ban on inter-state travels is still in force and security agencies are under strict instructions to arrest and prosecute violators. “The only exemptions are workers on essential duties,” said Mijinyawa. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Taraba, which currently has no active case of COVID-19, has been under lockdown, with the exception of Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. * Officers still in captivity PDP * Demands NASS Intervention There is disquiet in the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following the withdrawal of security aides attached to the president’s wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari. The withdrawal of police officers attached to the office of the First Lady, including her Aide-De-Camp (ADC), Usman Shugaba, and Escort Commander, came after the Special Assistant to the President, Sabiu Tunde Yusuf, a nephew to President Muhammadu Buhari, was asked by Mrs. Buhari to respect the COVID-19 guidelines, following his alleged refusal to go on self-isolation after returning from Lagos. The first lady’s encounter with the president’s nephew reportedly in the company of her children was said to have gone out of hand after the involvement of security personnel who shot into the air thrice. Daily Trust on Sunday learned that the gunshots at the State House happened at the point when Sabiu, who is popularly known as Tunde, a name he was given after Tunde Idiagbon, the second in command to then Major General Muhammadu Buhari during the military regime, was making efforts to leave after the altercation with the first family. A source said, “On Thursday, when the first lady heard that he was still coming to work, she asked him to self-isolate but he told her that the president said he didn’t have to. “Her insistence led to a heated verbal exchange between them and which the president was informed about. The president, however, took sides with Tunde and didn’t see any reason why he should self-isolate. “He said Zahra and Halima (his daughters) left the villa to visit their in-laws when Halima’s husband’s uncle died recently and they didn’t self-isolate on their return. He also pointed to the fact that when his new Chief of Staff, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, went to Lagos, he didn’t self-isolate on his return, so he didn’t see any reason why Tunde should. So, he overruled her.” The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, who visited the Presidential Villa Friday morning, was said to have ordered the arrest and detention of the police officers attached to the office of the first lady. Hajiya Buhari, unhappy with the move by the police authorities, called on the Inspector General of Police via her Twitter handle, to free her ADC and other police aides taken into custody. The first lady in her verified Twitter handle @aishambuhari, wrote: “That COVID-19 is real and still very much around in our nation is not in doubt. Consequently, I call on all relevant government agencies to enforce the Quarantine Act signed by Mr President and ensure no one is found violating this law and the NCDC guidelines especially on interstate travel without the necessary exemptions for movement of essentials. “Anyone who does that should at the very least be made to undergo a 14-day mandatory isolation no matter who the person is, no one should be above the law and the police command will do well to remember that. “Finally, I call on the IGP to release my assigned staff who are still in the custody of the police in order to avoid putting their lives in danger or exposure to COVID-19 while in their custody.” Daily Trust on Sunday gathered from sources that the security aides are yet to be released. It said also that it had played a key role in the multi-sectoral response, within the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 (PTF-COVID-19) established by President Muhammadu Buhari. “One hundred days after the first case, we remember all Nigerians who have passed away from the disease. ”We commiserate with their families and friends who have had to deal with the difficulty of losing loved ones at this time,” it said. The agency said that to ensure a well-coordinated emergency response, it activated a level three Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Feb, 27. It said that prior to this, the National EOC was in alert mode; monitoring the spread in other countries, carrying out risk assessments and strengthening Nigeria’s preparedness. During this time, the NCDC said that it developed technical guidelines, response plans and trained health workers across the country. Recall that the National EOC included representatives from the FMOH, other sister agencies and partners. Prior to the confirmation of the first case, NCDC supported four laboratories within its molecular laboratory network to activate testing for COVID-19. The US economy regained 2.5 million jobs in May as coronavirus pandemic shutdowns began to ease, sending the unemployment rate falling to 13.3 percent, the Labor Department reported Friday. The result defied even the most optimistic expectations among economists, who had been expecting job losses of more than eight million and a jobless rate of 20 percent or higher. President Donald Trump immediately cheered the data, tweeting, “Really Big Jobs Report. Great going President Trump (kidding but true)!” The report attributed the improvements to “a limited resumption of economic activity that had been curtailed in March and April due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and efforts to contain it.” However, as it has for the past two months, the Labor Department said the jobless rate was likely three points higher due to errors in how workers described their job status. Still, with states allowing businesses to reopen, employment last month rose sharply in leisure and hospitality, construction, retail trade and education and health services, according to the data. The number of workers on temporary layoff declined by 2.7 million to 15.3 million in a sign people have been able to return to their jobs. The gains came despite downward revisions to March and April that subtracted another 690,000 jobs. And government employment continued to decline sharply, dropping by 585,000 positions.
