PoliticsPromote Nigeria’s Culture Economy Abroad, Runsewe Tells Envoys by jarawa(op): 2:34pm On Feb 23, 2021
Director-General, National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Segun Runsewe, has urged all the new envoys to engage foreign countries and their people on the robust and rich Nigerian cultural economy waiting for collaborations.

He said the 36 states of the federation had very rich, unique and diverse cultural attributes and contents.

Runsewe said the NCAC would partner with the new envoys to promote and market Nigerian cultural festivals and destinations abroad as soon as they settled down.

“We’ve shown over the years that Nigerian culture has the capacity to enthrone peace and promote harmony to a world troubled by many irritations and uncertainty.

“Our culinary skills and fashion are another strategic attraction to which most nations and peoples you’re posted would want to know more and appreciate.

“The over 450 Nigerian indigenous languages, spoken across the length and breadth of the country, stands as veritable evidence of Nigerian uniqueness in the map of black Africa and the world in general.

“These are basic diplomatic ingredients and cultural values that can be used effectively to tell a refreshing story about Nigeria and help change the negative narratives of Nigerians and Nigeria abroad,” Runsewe said.

PoliticsSmart Adeyemi Describes Okezie Ikpeazu As A Drunkard by jarawa(op): 2:17pm On Feb 23, 2021
There was a mild drama in the Senate when Senator Smart Adeyemi (APC, Kogi) described Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State as a “champagne drinking man”.

Adeyemi, while contributing to a motion on Safe School Initiative in Nigeria, said Abia is governed by “drunkards”.

The lawmaker was apparently responding to a social media post allegedly linked to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who is from Abia.

In the post, Abaribe was said to have cast aspersion on Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello.

However, Abaribe said he was surprised that the Kogi Senator was making reference to a statement he did not make.

Adeyemi said while some governors were committed to the welfare and protection of their people, Abians “are governed by drunkards”.

He said: “Despite that some governors are doing their best, we are lucky to have a governor who has taken the issue of security as a serious priority.

“We are bordered by nine states, but we had an experience of the unfortunate incidents that are happening in neighbouring states.

“Some governors are committed to the protection of their people. In my state, the governor awarded contracts for the renovations of schools and provides security services to them.

“In some states where we have highly intelligent people, highly educated people, very enterprising people, like Abia, they are governed by drunkards. The governor of Abia is a champagne drinking man.

“Abia people are impoverished more than ever before. Abia people are unfortunate.”

At this point, Senate President Ahmad Lawan cautioned him against insulting the governor.

Apologise to Abia governor

Responding, Abaribe expressed shock over Adeyemi’s comment and urged his colleague to tender an apology to the governor of Abia.

Abaribe said: “Mr President, I will like to make a clarification. Unfortunately, what has happened here today is one of the problems that you see on social media. I never made any comment on the governor of Kogi State. Never!

“What has happened is what we see going on today. People write something and tag your name to it. And if you don’t ask question, you will not know whether you actually said it or not.

“And I see so many things tagged to me but I don’t talk. The last time I saw Nuhu Ribadu, I also spoke to him. Something was ascribed to him that was very deleterious.

“I’m very surprised that my good friend and colleague decided to take on the governor of Abia for something I never said.”

PoliticsNiger Gov: Kagara Victims Still With Their Captors by jarawa(op): 3:51am On Feb 22, 2021
At a press conference in Minna, the state capital, on Sunday night, the governor said efforts were being made to rescue them unhurt....

Governor Sani Bello of Niger State says the victims abducted at Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State, have not been released.

At a press conference in Minna, the state capital, on Sunday night, the governor said efforts were being made to rescue them unhurt.

“We still have the students of Kagara in the hands of the bandits and everything is being done to secure their release soonest,” the governor said.

A total of 27 students, 12 staff members and nine of their relatives were whisked away after gunmen in military uniform raided hostels and the school’s staff quarters.

President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered security agencies to secure their release immediately but the victims have been in captivity four days after.

On Saturday, Alhaji Ibrahim Matane, Secretary to the Niger State Government, had told Daily Trust that the discussion with the bandits was ongoing.

“We can’t rush them (bandits) even if we have time, we can’t dictate to them. I believe they are taking their time but at the appropriate time, when we have other information, the public will know,” he had said.

Meanwhile, the passengers who were abducted last week Sunday have been received at Government House, Minna.

The victims who walked into the government house hours after the governor announced their release were not allowed to interact with journalists.

Government officials had said they were tired and needed to rest.

The victims looked exhausted and malnourished.

While thanking God for guiding and protecting them, the governor thanked all those involved in the rescue mission,

The governor applauded the families and loved ones of the victims for the understanding shown in the trying period, adding that the state has made necessary arrangement to ensure that they go through thorough medical services and rehabilitation..

TravelHow Conflicting COVID-19 Protocols Forced UAE To Suspend Flights From Nigeria by jarawa(op): 8:09am On Feb 19, 2021
Controversy over COVID-19 testing protocols between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates has resulted in both countries slamming suspensions on each other. But while Nigeria has withdrawn its suspension, the Emiratis won’t do same at least until March 10, Daily Trust reports.

Differing COVID-19 travel protocols between Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have forced the UAE government to suspend flights from Nigeria until March 10, Daily Trust can report.

This followed the rejection of the rapid antigen test (RDT) by the Federal Government of Nigeria upon which Emirates Airlines was suspended.

Daily Trust reports that while the Federal Government, through the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, specified negative PCR test as a requirement for all inbound and outbound travellers, Emirates Airlines introduced the RDT test, which passengers were subjected to before they can board Emirates flights from Lagos and Abuja to Dubai.

However, the Federal Government frowned at this and warned the airline, through the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), to immediately withdraw the antigen test.

Emirates would not budge and were slammed with a suspension by the NCAA in compliance with the directive of the PTF.

The ban, the NCAA said, was necessitated by the continued airlift of passengers from Nigeria using the Rapid Antigen Tests (RDT) conducted by laboratories that are “neither approved nor authorized by the appropriate regulators.”

This, according to the aviation regulatory authority, is in flagrant violation of the directive by the Presidential Task Force on Covid-19.

“This is a violation of paragraph 5 of the NCAA letter with REF: NCAA/DG/AIR11/16/281 of 02 February 2021 addressed to your good self,” the Director-General of NCAA, Captain Musa Nuhu said in a letter to the airline.

“The paragraph clearly states: ‘Based on the forgoing and to enable the Nigerian government to put in place the needed infrastructure and logistics for COVID-19 RDT testing for departing passengers, the PTF has directed that Emirates Airlines should either accept passengers without RDT pending when the infrastructure and logistics are put in place or suspend its flights to and from Nigeria until such a time when the required infrastructure and logistics are fully established and implemented,” he said.

Though the ban was lifted the following day after Emirates announced the withdrawal of the antigen test, the airline afterwards suspended all Nigerian flights and only allows flights from Dubai to Nigeria.

The suspension also affected the Sharjah-Dubai flights operated by Nigerian carrier, Air Peace, as well as any other flight conveying Nigerians to Dubai.

Air Peace in a statement confirmed the development, indicating that the UAE Government has stopped the airlifting of Nigerians from Nigeria to the UAE as part of its COVID-19 measures.

“However, flights bringing Nigerians back from UAE are not affected. To this end, Air Peace flights from UAE (Sharjah-Dubai) to Lagos are not affected. Normal flights shall resume when the restriction is lifted from February 28, 2021,” Air Peace announced.

Also, Egypt Air made a similar announcement to inform its trade partners and passengers of the development.

However, the UAE government has extended the suspension of Nigerian flights from the initial February 28 to March 10.

“In line with government directives, passenger services from Nigeria (Lagos and Abuja) to Dubai are temporarily suspended until 10 March 2021,” Emirates Airlines said in an updated travel protocol on Nigerian flights.

A source privy to the development in a chat with our correspondent said, “The UAE believes the introduction of the rapid antigen test is the only measure to guide against having a COVID-19 carrier on board since there have been several cases of fakery of the test result.

“But this was however being done using unapproved laboratories, which was why the PTF had to warn the airline through the NCAA to stop the antigen test as a requirement. The PTF had to wield the big stick after the airline ignored the warning,” he said.

It was however learnt that the UAE would review the ban only on March 10 and it could be further extended if the government is not satisfied with the COVID-19 situation in Nigeria.

Speaking with Daily Trust, aviation analyst, Group Capt. John Ojikutu (rtd) said he would not blame the UAE government for refusing to compromise on its national public health measure.

“If I understand what the UAE has said to mean don’t bring passengers from your country but you can come and take your nationals from here. I find that situation to be similar to what happened at the height of the pandemic about this time last year when states go to countries where their nationals were stranded to evacuate them. “The reason, I suppose is that it could be costing the UAE a lot more on testing, tracing or tracking and treating nationals of other countries visiting or transiting the country than their own citizens; that does not make any economic sense to a responsible nation.

“Check the population of the UAE and the passenger traffic and compare with ours; compare also our efforts in the fight against the pandemic to that of the UAE, you’ll understand where the fear of the UAE is coming from.”

Also speaking, a member of the Aviation Roundtable and Safety Initiative, Mr. Olumide Ohunayo said Emirates was caught between making profit and implementing the national health protocols against COVID-19.

He noted that apart from Emirates, other airlines have also been coming up with different protocols as approved by their respective counties.

Ohunayo, who is a Director of Research at Zenith Travel, asked the Federal Government to be more firm in dealing with laboratories where fake COVID-19 tests are detected and also prosecute the perpetrators.

He said, “What they (Emirates) have now is between making profit and meeting the national health protocol of Dubai. That is the case before us. The Emirati are insisting that after the PCR test, passengers should do the antigen test at the airport.

“Some other airlines are also doing it but at the point of arrival in their country but Emirates is saying you should do it at the point of departure but the government is saying as at today, we don’t have such infrastructure in place. What we agreed for our passengers is the PCR test. Any other test outside the one approved by the government will not stand and that is the point.”

President of the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA), Mrs Susan Akporiaye, however, queried the rationale behind UAE’s action, tasking the Federal Government to do everything necessary to resolve the issue.

She also noted that the Federal Government has been too silent on the development.

On the allegation of faking COVID-19 tests, she said, “The UAE should not tell us that because if that was the issue, the UK should have also banned us. We are going to all other places, we are going to Turkey, we are going to Italy, we are going to Canada, all other places apart from there.

“We all kick against the faking of COVID-19 test results as travel agents and we won’t get involved in things that would affect the industry. Other countries are doing it (producing fake test results). It is because of this that the UK government put 33 countries on a watch list and gave them conditions. But Nigeria was not there. So the UAE should not tell us it is because of fake COVID-19 tests that they are banning us.”

PoliticsAmnesty International To FG: Bring Abductors Of Niger Students To Justice by jarawa(op): 7:18am On Feb 18, 2021
Amnesty International has condemned the Wednesday’s abduction of 42 persons by gunmen at the Government Science College, Kagara, Niger State, saying attacks on schools undermine right to education.

Its director, Osai Ojigho, urged the Federal Government to bring to justice, those responsible for the abduction and other human rights abuses, adding that the latest development has clearly shown that authorities are not doing enough to protect lives.

“We condemn this appalling attack, which is the latest in a string of attacks on schools in northern Nigeria. Attacks on schools and abductions of children are war crimes. Those found to be responsible for the abduction must be brought to justice for these and other human rights abuses.

“That this is coming only about three months after a similar incident at a school in Kankara, Katsina state, shows that authorities are not doing enough to protect lives. The children abducted are in serious risk of being harmed.

“Nigerian authorities must take all measures to return them to safety, along with all children currently under the custody of armed groups. Education is under attack in northern Nigeria.

“Schools should be places of safety, and no child should have to choose between their education and their life. Other children have had to abandon their education after being displaced by frequent violent attacks on their communities, and many teachers have been forced to flee to other states.

“The Nigerian authorities must act immediately to prevent attacks on schools, to protect children’s lives and their right to education.

“The protection of children’s lives is paramount, and the Nigerian government has a duty to ensure that the country’s educational sector is not further threatened by armed groups on rampage across northern Nigeria.

“The attack on Government Science College Kagara is a serious violation of international humanitarian law and it undermines the right to education for thousands of children in northern Nigeria.

“The abduction of students by armed groups can severely reduce the availability of and access to education for many children in northern Nigeria where violent attacks are escalating.”

PoliticsOgun Crisis: 23 Herdsmen Were Killed — Sarkin Fulani by jarawa(op): 6:46am On Feb 17, 2021
The Sarkin Fulani of Abeokuta, Muhammad Kabir Labar, yesterday said 23 herdsmen were killed and about 20 houses burnt in the recent crisis in Ogun State.

He spoke at the stakeholders’ meeting on farmers and herdsmen’s clashes in the state. Those present at the event were Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawale, Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu and Niger State Governor Abubakar Sanni Bello.

He said elements were bent “on setting our people against one another by whipping up ethnic sentiments.”

Recent clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers in the troubled areas of Yewaland claimed lives in Eggua, Ketu, Igbooro, Iselu, Agbon-Ojodu, Asa, Ibeku, Imeko and Oja-Odan.

Labar blamed the crisis on “strangers” who, he said, had disrupted peaceful coexistence enjoyed in the state over the years.

National President, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Muhammad Kirowa, said herders are not trouble makers, but victims of the attacks.

He said over 8,000 cows were consumed in the Southwest on a daily basis.

“Our people suffered more in the hands of criminals in Nigeria. But we have been portrayed as criminals. Herders deserve sympathy. They’re not criminals,” he said.

The Olu of Ilaro and paramount ruler of Yewaland, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, warned herders and their association against inflammatory remarks.

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said only ban on itinerary herders and open grazing would end crisis and guarantee peace between farmers and herders in the Southwest.

He blamed the clashes on the influx of foreign herders into Nigeria from West African countries.

He described the ethnic clashes as ECOWAS problem, saying the regional body must put in measures to either register or ban movement of cattle herders into the country.

“We need to understand these issues. As of now, they’re ECOWAS problems. So, through ECOWAS, there must be a means of either registering the cattle that are coming into Nigeria or preventing the movement of cattle into Nigeria. That is a fact because they come with weapons. Initially, they were coming with weapons to protect themselves from clashes with farmers, but now, they’ve taken advantage, coming with weapons into the country to commit crimes.

“The movement by trekking from northern part of this country to the southern part of this country must be stopped. If we need peace with the farmers, but if we’re led by sentiments, herdsmanship must change from traditional to commercial herdsmanship.

“It must translate to commercial, not traditional, those days are gone and know some of the members of the Miyetti Allah may not be happy with my statement but I have to make it, I’m a Fulani man like them,” Ganduje said.

Governor Abiodun hinted that the farmers and herders in the state would sign a treaty as part of the part of peace meeting.

He said those fomenting trouble and ethnic clashes in the state are non-residents.

PoliticsRising Tension: Abdulsalami Asks Govs To Resolve Differences, Take Responsibilit by jarawa(op): 6:27am On Feb 17, 2021
* Rich, influential people behind current crisis – Buhari
* Shasa clashes not tribal war – Governors
* Arms proliferation behind Nigeria’s security challenges – Senate
* Reps to liaise with NGF to address insecurity

Former Head of State and Chairman, National Peace Committee (NOC), General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has called on the 36 state governors to resolve their differences, speak with one voice and confront the security challenges bedevilling the country.

He also appealed to Nigerians to give peace a chance in the face of rising tension in different parts of the country.

Addressing journalists at his Hilltop residence in Minna on Tuesday, the Niger State capital, the former head of state noted that if care was not taken, the growing tension in the country might lead Nigeria to a point of no return.

Daily Trust reports that at the height of the eviction order for herders in some states in the South West and South East, and the attendant banditry and kidnapping in North West and North Central, some governors engaged in verbal war and calling themselves out.

For instance, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State had condemned the statement credited to his counterpart from Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, that herdsmen had no option but to carry AK-47 for self-defence.

But the Bauchi governor said his reference to AK47 was simply to put in perspective, the predicament and desperation of those law-abiding Fulani herdsmen who, while carrying out their legitimate cow-rearing business, had become serial victims of cattle rustling, banditry, kidnapping and assassination

He also condemned South West and South East governors, and also Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State in North Central, over the manner in which they were handling farmer/herder clashes.

Elsewhere, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State had said his colleagues in North West were working at cross purposes, and therefore unable to address the security challenges in the region. Responding, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State said it appeared El-Rufai doesn’t understand issues around insecurity. Observers believed that going by the enormous influence they wield, the federal government will not succeed in taming security challenges if governors kept shifting blames among themselves.

‘Governors must work together to end insecurity’

While expressing his displeasure over the security challenges, Abdulsalami said some people were fanning the embers of disunity, anarchy, and disintegration.

He said recent happenings in some parts of the country occasioned by ethnic attacks were unfortunate because they were adding to the problems of insurgency, kidnapping and robbery.

“We appeal to the citizens of our dear country who have borne so much pains and suffering to remain resilient and patient. Thousands of our people are homeless and refugees across the length and breadth of their own country. We know what farmers have faced in the last few years and the harvests will be a serious challenge this year. Therefore, let us all rally together in these hard times, make the required sacrifices and remain vigilant, standing by one another,” he said.

While appealing to the state governors who are the chief security officers of their states to sheath their swords, Abdulsalami said they should tone down their rhetoric and take full responsibility for managing the divergent voices and frustrations within their states.

He said, “It is true that we are all in a state of fear and collective anxiety. However, the last thing we need is for the enemy to sense a lack of unity on our part or a break in our ranks.

“We appeal to the new service chiefs and IGP to rise to the urgent demands of the moment by rallying their troops and designing the best strategy for ending the tragic war that has continued to consumed and destroy the foundations of our dear country.

“We hope that based on their field experiences in the war, they can draw up a well-coordinated programme to ensure that all our resources are deployed to achieve the much-needed victory in this avoidable war.”

We’ll fish our people behind the crisis – Buhari

Hours after Abdulsalami called on those that matter to work together and solve Nigeria’s security challenges, President Muhammadu Buhari attributed the upheavals in some parts of the country to a few people with resources and influence.

President Buhari, who spoke on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of Borno/Yobe Elders Forum on a courtesy call, assured that these people would be identified and dealt with in due course.

“I am confident that we will eventually convince the small number of people with resources and influence that are a nuisance to this great country. God willing, we will identify them, and deal with them. I am extremely concerned about your constituency like the rest of the country.”

The President said the stability of the country was of paramount interest to him and the federal government would continue to work towards it despite the actions of a few people.

President Buhari said: “We need this country. We will continue to work for its stability. I feel that whatever happens, we will continue to make it, and will keep on praying to God so that for those who feel that they don’t need Nigeria, we will succeed over their intentions and actions.”

He expressed appreciation to the leaders for coming to terms with the positive improvement that has occurred in the states since the inception of the administration.

In his remarks, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State said the leaders were in Abuja to thank the president for the tremendous improvement in their states and to intimate him with some of the prevailing socio-economic conditions.

Also on the delegation were Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, former Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno, as well as senators, traditional rulers and elders from the two states, including Architect Bunu Sheriff, Gambo Gubio, the Ministers of State for Agriculture, Mustapha Shehuri and Works and Housing, Abubakar D. Aliyu.

We’ll liaise with NGF to address insecurity

The House of Representatives has advised political and public office holders against inflammatory and inciting statements that may cause further divisions and unrest in the country.

This followed a resolution passed by the House on a motion of urgent public importance moved by Rep. Dachung Bagos (PDP, Plateau).

The motion was on the heels of the alleged statement by Governor Mohammed of Bauchi and the attendant responses.

“If all public officials regardless of their position or status are not cautioned against inciting or provoking the general public, the already tense situation in the country will lead to open hostilities,” the legislator said.

After the presentation of the motion, the House resolved to interface with the Nigeria Governors Forum through its relevant committees in order to find a lasting solution to insecurity in the country.

Shasa crisis not a tribal war- NGF

The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) on Tuesday said that the crisis in Shasa, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, has nothing to do with tribal war but regrettable conflict in two different communities.

The governor of Kebbi State, Alhaji Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, who led three other governors from the northern states on behalf of the NGF to Shasa, explained that the four northern governors were sent to Ibadan to resolve the crisis.

PoliticsInsecurity: Address Nigerians Now, Akeredolu Tells Buhari by jarawa(op): 6:48am On Feb 16, 2021
Chairman, South-West Governors Forum and Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to address Nigerians on the worsening insecurity in the country.

Akeredolu, made the call last night while featuring on Channels Television’s Politics Today, monitored by our reporters.

According to him, though it is a known fact that the president would not support criminals, it is important for him “to come out and say that those with illegal arms should be arrested and before it gets out of hand, the security agencies should be awake, without rest, to ensure that open grazing s banned.

“From there, laws should follow banning the practice.”

Akeredolu cautioned against profiling ethnic groups as criminals saying that “the important thing is that we should appreciate that we are fighting criminals and not have to call them by any ethnic names.”

He also said the rising insecurity in the land called for a firm decision on state police.

He said the security architectures needed to be rejig for policing to be effective across the nation.

He said: “We need to discuss how effective our security apparatus is now, how can we continue in this security architecture in this country in which you have a command in Abuja for the policing? It will not work and is not working.

“A lot of governors have spoken on this and the time is now for a decision to be taken. I thought there is a bill in the National Assembly about having state police, the time is now because the level of insecurity has given rise to state security. This is when we can hit the name when it is hot.”

Akeredolu also asked the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore to stop defending foreign herders and join hands with government and police authorities to treat as criminals, kidnappers, bandits and other perpetrators of crimes.

He said it was expedient for the police and other security agencies to identify criminal foreign herders, go into investigation fully and prosecute culpable ones.

He said: “Whether we like it or not, let us agree with ourselves that this is a common language they’ve been speaking across length and breadth, particularly in West Africa and part of North Africa.

“So, if they come, how did they come here? But one of our major problems is that, when we have an evil of this nature, and we have a group like the Miyetti Allah, they do not have to hold themselves out to defend these people.

“If they are not your members, and you do not agree with what they are doing, there is no need for you to defend them. Let us treat them strictly as what they are – criminals and get them out, and leave yourself to support us in getting them out.”

The governor also lampooned Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed over his recent comment on herdsmen’s AK-47 riffle.

He said Mohammed should have called for calm and sue for peace instead of escalating already heightened tension with his comment.

Akeredolu also disclosed that the governors in the Southwest would meet with the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno and the newly appointed service chiefs on Wednesday over the security challenges in the zone.

PoliticsShasa Crisis: Northerners Leaving Ibadan In Droves by jarawa(op): 6:16am On Feb 16, 2021
From Jeremiah Oke, Kabiru Y. Ali (Ibadan), Dalhatu Liman & Idowu Isamotu (Abuja)

Hundreds of Hausa people living in Oyo State are relocating to the North in the aftermath of last week’s crisis in the Shasa area and environs in Ibadan, Daily Trust reports.

Some of the northerners who left the crisis-prone areas between Friday and Saturday said they paid security operatives between N5,000 and N10, 000 to escort them to safer locations, including the residence of Sarkin Sasa, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin.

One of the victims said they had to pay the money so that they would not be lynched.

Recall that a fight that ensued between the Hausa community and the native Yoruba community in Shasa Market, which started on Thursday, February 11, and snowballed on Friday, February 12, had led to the death of nearly 30 people.

The Sasha Market with shops belonging to the Hausa and Yoruba, vehicles and many residential houses were burnt during the crisis.

Even though peace has reportedly been restored in Shasa and environs following the deployment of security agents, leaders of the Hausa community and some displaced residents said many of them including women and children have started coming back to the North.

Some of the victims said they had to leave Ibadan for the North because they lost all their belongings, including shops and houses, and there was no support from the government at the state and federal levels.

Daily Trust learnt that besides many of the northerners that left for Kano, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kaduna, Jigawa and other states, about 500 are currently taking refuge at Akinyele’s Main Garage. The head of the garage, Alhaji Yaro Abubakar, told our reporter that the youths have been there since Friday and most of them trekked from Shasa Market and adjoining quarters.

“Some of us received monetary donations from our fellow Hausa community leaders to go back to our respective states in the North,” one of the displaced persons said.

He said they lost their belongings during Friday’s crisis. “And that is why we are going back to the North. We are lucky to be alive,” he said.

A wealthy individual, one Alhaji Nasiru Muhammad Naharande (Youth Leader of the Hausa community in Ibadan), is providing three square meals to the victims at the garage. Other well to do individuals were also assisting the displaced.

Most of the IDPs interviewed vowed not to return to the Shasa Market until the government took decisive measures in protecting their lives and property.

The Magajin Gari Hausawa of Ibadan Land, Alhaji Usman Garba, confirmed on Monday that some members of the Hausa Community were going back to the North in droves.

According to him, “We have not seen any government intervention agency or NGO to attend to our humanitarian needs. Our people are joining trailers and buses back to the North. They are returning to the North not because they asked them to go but because many of them have lost their belongings to the crisis.”

Asked about the security situation in Shasa, he said, “Our people are impressed because the police, DSS, Army, civil defence and men of Amotekun are here. They check people moving in and out of Shasa.”

On how they were managing the displaced in terms of feeding and other basic needs, Alhaji Garba said, “We have moved some of them to main Sabo in Mokola to reduce burden in the house of Sarkin Sasa. We are also contributing money to feed and care for the victims.

“I wept when I went to Shasa. Many people were killed unreported. Our children have no place to sleep while others are hungry. Since that day, we have been contributing money for them to eat.

“I just called my younger brothers to bring the only remaining bag of rice in our house for those who are still in the Sarkin Hausawa’s house. Government has not done anything in terms of humanitarian support,” he said.

Daily Trust had on Monday reported that about 5,000 Hausa residents in Shasa were seeking refuge at the palace of Maiyasin.

“I am at the Baale Shasa’s house as we speak. We have spent more than two hours here. The governor on Sunday directed the Sarkin Hausawa and the Baale of Yoruba to find a lasting solution to the crisis,” he said.

Non-Nigerian caused crisis

The Magajin Gari, who is a member of the committee set up to resolve the crisis, said there were immediate and remote causes of the crisis.

He said that they discovered the mastermind of the crisis in the area was from the Niger Republic. According to him, the immediate cause was the fight between a Nigerien and a lady in the market while the remote cause was the leadership tussle at the Shasa Market.

He said a comprehensive report on the findings of the committee, which was set up by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, will be released after they completed their deliberations.

“The meeting will continue today,” the leader said.

On the remote cause of the problem, he said, “Traders in the market have been having issues for long. The Yoruba people are arguing that since the establishment of the market, it was only Hausa people that have been leading the market. They are insisting that they won’t accept any truce until a Yoruba man emerges as the chairman.

“Although our people said the market should be led by a Hausa man because they are the real people working in the market, we will continue the meeting tomorrow (today),” he said.

We’ll set up a judicial panel

Meanwhile, Governor Makinde has said that a judicial panel will be inaugurated to investigate the crisis, adding that peace and security committees will equally be put in place in all the zones of the state to address the grievances of contending parties.

Makinde, in a state-wide broadcast, aired on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (because), on Monday, appealed to angry residents of Shasa to sheath their swords.

He said contrary to news circulating on social media, the state government was able to bring the situation in Shasa under control since around 2 pm on Saturday.

“A curfew was put in place and there has been no further unrest since then. I mourn the loss of lives that has occurred. Even when justice is served, nothing can bring back the dead. That is why I must also state that individuals who have taken to stoking up ethnic flames in Oyo State either through their utterances or actions or posts on social media are enemies of our state.

“The people who have decided to leverage these sad events to further their political goals are not our friends. These people handing us petrol and matches will not stand with us when the fire turns into an inferno. When we see the potential dangers of words and actions, we must take precautions. It is time to think about our self-preservation. It is time to put Oyo State first,” he said.

PoliticsService Chiefs’ Appointment: Consider Igbo Too, Yoruba Elders Tell Buhari by jarawa(op): 6:36am On Feb 10, 2021
Some elders from the South West yesterday commended President Muhammadu Buhari for appointing one of their sons as Chief of Air Staff.

The elders, under the aegis of Conference of Concerned Yoruba Elders, said the president’s gesture was a demonstration of his unwavering confidence in the South West to help his administration give Nigerians the much-needed security as he pledged during his campaign.

CCYE National Coordinator, Prof. Olusegun Ajibola and National Secretary, Dr Catherine Adisa, urged their kinsmen to reciprocate the president’s gesture by supporting his administration to succeed in bestowing an enduring legacy of good leadership for the country.

They, however, expressed reservation over what they called the continuous side-lining of their Igbo neighbours from the security management team.

They said this gave them concern as it had happened to the South East for the second time since 2015.

They urged Buhari to review the appointments and accommodate the South East for justice and equity.

They said no ethnic group or tribe had more stake in the Nigerian project than the others, asking Buhari to right “this wrong” so that every part of the country could have a sense of belonging in Nigeria.

jarawa:
A mother in Germany got a nasty surprise after letting her seven-year-old son play a game on her mobile phone.

The boy splurged 2,753.91 euros – the equivalent of N1,238,309.86 – on in-app purchases, according to a statement from the consumer advice centre in the state of Lower Saxony, released to mark ‘Safer Internet Day’.

The child had been given permission to play the colourful online game and his mother had given him access to a voucher with a small amount of credit to spend.

What she forgot was that her credit card was attached to the account.

The statement said her son had continued to play the game in secret.

Kathrin Koerber, a legal expert with the state consumer body, said German law only allows for children to make purchases without parental permission within the limits of their pocket money – so in such cases, it is worth challenging the bill.

Following a letter sent to the company on her behalf, the bulk of the mother’s bill – 2,654.31 euros – was dropped, Koerber added.

She noted that it was common, particularly during the coronavirus lockdown, for parents to hand their smartphones over to children to keep them occupied.

But she warned people to check their settings before they do so.

PoliticsPoverty, Ignorance Worsening COVID-19 In Nigeria — Kaigama by jarawa(op): 6:25am On Feb 08, 2021
Abuja Diocese, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, says poverty and ignorance attitudes are some of the factors contributing to the rising cases of COVID-19 in the country.

He said this on Sunday in his Homily, delivered at St. Jude’s Parish, Zuba.

According to him, “as basic as the facemask which is seriously recommended to be worn by everyone is to prevent spread of the virus, he has seen individuals wearing dirty face masks for days because they cannot afford new ones, thus leading to more infections.

“The other fear is that if it takes so much time and money now to do a test for COVID-19, will it be that easy for the poor to have access to the vaccine? As basic as the face mask which is seriously recommended to be worn by everyone is, I have seen individuals wearing dirty face masks for days because they cannot afford new ones, another reason for more infections.”

He said that he had been recently asked all kinds of questions about the coronavirus pandemic on whether it is real or an artificial disease created and spread so that some people can make money through the manufacture of vaccines among others

He said despite these questionings, the fact remained that in the last weeks, Monsignors, priests and prominent individuals had succumbed to the hands of death on account of coronavirus disease apart from the economic difficulties on account of the coronavirus pandemic that are palpable.

He said: “The fear in Africa today is that the menace of Coronavirus will continue to be with us for a long time, and so we need to be watchful and vigilant. Many in Nigeria however ask if the vaccines are medically safe and whether the poor can also benefit from them, considering that even the palliatives meant for the needy ended up in the homes of a few favoured ones or were needlessly hoarded in warehouses.”

He called for collective efforts to stem the spread of the virus, adding that before vaccinating Nigerians, the nation’s medical experts must ensure that the vaccines had been subjected to appropriate tests for genuineness and properly stored to allay the fear of contamination.

PoliticsMURIC Tells FG: We Have Evidence Against Herdsmen by jarawa(op): 1:06pm On Feb 06, 2021
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has disclosed that it has proofs of crops’ destruction in farms all over the country by herdsmen’s cattle.

It, therefore, urged the Federal Government to compensate farmers whose crops have been destroyed.

The MURIC Director, Prof Ishaq Akintola, disclosed this in a statement.

He suggested that the compensation, which may be in instalment, should be paid to farmers whose farms were destroyed in all states of the federation.

The Proof

According to him, MURIC now has concrete evidence of the culpability of herdsmen, including video clips, in which cows destroyed farms belonging to members of the organisation.

“MURIC is now in possession of indubitable evidence of the destruction of crops on farmlands by cows brought by herdsmen.

“We sent out feelers to all states where we have branches of MURIC and the reports are overwhelmingly convincing.

“We asked our members to supply information on the activities of herdsmen in their states, including Abuja. In fact, we were stupefied by the outcome.

“The most recent report from a young member of MURIC in Ogun State, who ventured into agriculture, reads: ‘Herders invaded my five hectares of rice farm Sunday, 31st January 2021 and it was totally destroyed.

‘The incident happened at the farm of Sanpro Foods, a rice production company whose premises is located at the Oyan farm settlement, Ibaro Rice Village, Ibaro in Abeokuta North Local Government, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

‘The farm is along Igboora Road after the roundabout’,” Akintola said.

Akintola said that the mudiir (principal) of a local Arabic school in Lagos also reported another sad incident in which herders brought cows to invade his father’s cashew farm in Ijomu-Oro, Kwara State.

He quoted the principal as saying that everything was destroyed, lamenting that his father would have realised millions of naira had he been able to harvest his cashew nuts.

Akintola said: “He [principal] added that the fear of herders has forced farmers in Ido-Oro [also in Kwara State] to abandon their farms.

“This is frightening. Farmers in Kwara State are afraid of going to their farms due to the activities of herders.

“Farmers in Zamfara and Katsina have run away from their farms for fear of being killed or kidnapped by bandits.

“Farmers in Ilesa, Osun State, those in Igangan, Oyo State and those in Ebonyi live in palpable fear of herders.

“From where shall food come to our tables? Famine is coming! Cows and bandits have taken over Nigerian farms.”

Daily Trust has not been able to get a response from the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN).

‘Take responsibility now’

He, therefore, urged the federal and state governments to take responsibility.

He said that it was clear that the Federal Government is yet to appreciate what farmers are going through in the hands of marauding herdsmen.

He said: “How would you feel if someone just walks in and smashes all that you have been putting together for months or years?
“We, therefore, declare that farmers have been patient enough. FG should do something urgently.

“We recall our advice to FG two days ago in which we advocated for payment of bailout for herders to enable them to buy land from private owners for use as ranches.

“The compensation we are now asking for farmers, who lost their crops, will be spread to all parts of the country: farmers in Benue, Ondo, Sokoto, Ekiti, Enugu, Ogun, Katsina, among others will be eligible.

“This is the way the government can take responsibility.

“Such compensation will assuage farmers, douse tension across the country and inject a new dose of confidence in Project Nigeria.”

Clashes

There have been increased clashes between host communities across the country and herdsmen recently.

The Ondo State Government recently ordered herdsmen out of its forests reserves while in Ogun and Oyo states, youths are attacking Fulani settlements and ordering them to vacate their communities.

Also, in Edo, there were protests against herdsmen’s activities within the week.

In the South-east, South-south and North-central states, host communities are in a constant battle with herdsmen.

PoliticsAnother Tragedy In Anambra As Hunter Kills Wife, Son, Set His House On Fire by jarawa(op): 12:42pm On Feb 06, 2021
Uchechukwu Nweke, a 65-year-old hunter in Umuiyom, a community in Amanuke in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State, has killed his 55-year-old wife, Patricia and son, Obinna, 29, and set his house ablaze.

Although the incident happened on January 28, 2021, the report came out hours after a man, his wife and daughter were shot dead in another part of the state.

Narrating the incident of the hunter, who also killed himself, Chief Charles Nnawude, chairman of the vigilante group in the community, said the hunter always had problems with his wife and children.

“I had intervened severally when the late Nweke brought cases of how his wife and children had been maltreating him.

“Sometime last week, he complained about how they beat him and chased him away from the house.

“I tried to reconcile them but it was not possible. The man left and went into the bush to stay.

He later showed me the wounds inflicted on him by his wife and children, using a knife. There were wounds all over him,’’ he said.

According to Nnawude, when the man concluded the plan to carry out this act, he told his second wife to take her children and travel, but he did not give reasons.

It was when the woman left the community with her children that he executed his plan, he said.

Sampson Okoye, a neighbour, told Daily Trust Saturday that the man had been complaining about his wife and children.

According to Okoye, because of the severity of the last beating from them, Nweke sought medical attention as he sustained several injuries. He said the man had told him that he would do something disastrous.

“I heard gunshots about 3 am on Thursday, and a few minutes later, he came to me, complaining that his wife and children refused to release money for him to collect the lab test on the last beating they gave him.

“I appealed to him to go back to his house so that in the morning the issue would be resolved.

“I didn’t know that he had killed his wife and son. The man also accused his son of saying bad things about him,’’ Okoye said.

He added that he had also tried to reconcile them, but since it was a family affair, he could not do much.

“It was a family matter, so there is a certain level you cannot push. Sometimes you advise people and they will accept, but sometimes they won’t.

“They always beat the man. My advice fell on deaf ears,’’ he said.

He advised families to always settle problems amicably and urged children not to take side with any of their parents when there’s a misunderstanding.

Confirming the incident, the police public relations officer, Anambra State command, CSP Haruna Mohammed, said they received a report that a hunter in Amanuke allegedly shot his wife, son, burnt his house and killed himself in a circumstance yet to be ascertained.

He said police detectives attached to Achalla division immediately visited the scene and took victims to Uche Hospital, Isuanocha, where they were confirmed dead by a medical doctor.

Their corpses were subsequently deposited in the hospital’s morgue while an investigation is ongoing.

Also speaking on the matter, Dr Onukwube Alex Anedo of the Department of African and Asian Studies, Nnamidi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, told Daily Trust that in Igbo culture and tradition, killing oneself and others is highly abominable.

Anedo, who specialises in Sino/Afrio culture and anthropology said, “It is a sin for one to burn his house, another person’s house or somebody’s farm. It is also a sin to kill oneself or another person.’’

He said anyone who killed members of his household, burnt his house and killed himself was normally thrown into the evil forest because if he was allowed to live, he would still pay by hanging himself.

He said such action was normally induced, either through spiritual or physical means.

He further said there was the need to find out what was responsible for such action and do some cleansing, adding that if nothing is done about it, calamity will befall the family and the entire community.

“It is advisable for the family members to go into inquiry through divination to find out why the man took such a decision.

“If they don’t find out the cause and do the cleansing before his burial, it might bring further calamities to the family and community,’’ he said.

He also said that what happened could be as a result of what happened in the past in the family that was not properly appeased, insisting that the incident was not ordinary.

“Nobody is happy to die, even at extreme pains and sickness. Something is wrong somewhere,’’ he said.

Asked why adherents of Christianity would be expected to make inquires through divination, he said the system was commonly practised among the people, but many pretend about it.

“People don’t openly practise divination, but most of the people who profess to be men of God visit various centres at night in disguise. People are seriously indulging in divination secretly,’’ he said.

A psychologist and lecturer in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Mrs Amaka Okafor, said it was not normal for any person to behave in such a manner.

According to her, the man could have some mental issues that were not detected, and as such, he could choose to act like that.

She also said another possible reason for such action may be that somebody had charmed him.

“No normal person can take the lives of his wife and son, his own life, and at the same time, burn his house. It is not ordinary.

“The man may have equally acted under the influence of diabolic manipulation from evil forces,’’ she said.

CelebritiesCOVID-19: Nigerian Entertainers Need Palliatives From FG – Tee Mac by jarawa(op): 2:18pm On Feb 05, 2021
The President, Entertainment Database and a Nigerian Flutist, Omatshola Iseli, popularly known as Tee Mac, has called on the Federal Government to provide COVID-19 palliatives to Nigerian entertainers.

Tee Mac, who made this call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said Nigerian entertainers were worst hit by the restrictions occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic.

Iseli, also the Chairman, Entertainment Foundation, said the fact that night clubs and multipurpose halls had been shut down and ban on live shows, entertainers like musicians, actors and comedians have been hugely affected.

According to him, with this development, Nigerian Entertainers have no streams of income.

Tee Mac said that palliatives must be extended to these group of individuals just as practised in other climes like Europe and the United States of America (USA).

He said unfortunately, no Nigerian entertainers had received any palliative from the governments since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tee Mac said the Federal Government should revisit the issue of COVID-19 palliatives meant for Nigerian Entertainers and ensured that they truly benefited from it.

“Nigerian Entertainers are suffering, if government bans live shows, night clubs and multipurpose halls from operating, they should also cushion the effect on entertainers who were not working by providing palliatives.

“In 2020, we were told that some money was earmarked as COVID-19 palliative for Nigerian Entertainers but up till now, no musician, comedian or actor has received any dime as palliative.

“This is disheartening and I plead with the government to wade into this issue promptly because Nigerian entertainers are really suffering.

“In Switzerland, every musician gets US$3,000 per month, in the United States of America, they get US$1,500 per month while musicians in the United Kingdom get 1,500 pounds, this is because their wellbeing is prioritised.

“Nigeria should not be an exemption, the wellbeing of musicians, comedians, visual artists and actors must be placed on the front burner,” he said.

Tee Mac noted that there were over 400,000 professional musicians in Nigeria and about 1.2 million amateur musicians who were currently suffering due to the negative effect of COVID-19 pandemic.

“The group of people who have suffered the most during this COVID-19 era are the entertainers, the said COVID-19 palliative should be extended to us,” he said. (NAN)

PoliticsAtiku: Nigeria Needs Urgent Rescue by jarawa(op): 9:12am On Feb 01, 2021
A former Vice President and 2019 Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said the country has been badly damaged and broken, adding that there is need for urgent rescue.

Atiku specifically lamented over what he described as hunger in the Northern Nigeria and indeed the entire country which he said is getting to an unbearable and alarming rate, saying farmers, fathers and mothers can no longer go to the farm.

Speaking at the weekend in Gombe State during the inauguration of states and zonal leadership for a major youth group in the North-east zone known as Nigeria Youth Congress for Atiku, the former Vice President, who was represented by Hon. Oladimeji Fabiyi, also lamented the state of insecurity in the country.

He said: “The hunger in Northern Nigeria and indeed the entire country is getting to an unbearable and alarming rate as our farmers, fathers and mothers can no longer go to the farm.

“Agriculture is one of the comparative advantages Northern Nigeria has over other regions in the country but as at today, it is almost non-existent, unfortunately, occasioned by abysmal insecurity in the region.

“You hardly can drive 10 kilometres in any part of the North without being kidnapped or attacked by armed bandits.

“This is not acceptable, this is not the time to massage the ego of the national leadership, this is the time to cry out for help.”

While thanking the leadership and members of the group who came from the six states of the North-east for the inauguration and their support, Atiku urged the Northern youths to protect their future.

“Northern youth have great potentials, you have a huge role to play in what becomes of your region and Nigeria moving forward, you must protect your future and you can achieve this only by supporting one of your own, who has shown a commitment to your welfare, progress and development.

“Atiku Abubakar, the Golden son of the North East and a Pan Nigeria per excellence surely stand in the gap.”

Fabiyi added that; “personally, I wished Atiku is from Southern Nigeria, we would give him all the necessary support to lead Nigeria, but it’s not too late for the North-east and indeed entire Northern Nigeria to rise up in support of their own.”

The National Chairman of the group, Yahuza Shehu, in his welcome address, highlighted the numerous achievements of the group since formation, stressing that Atiku remains the best unifier for a terribly divided country like Nigeria.

He said: “The North-east has no reason not to support Atiku should he decided to run come 2023.”

He called on all stakeholders, not only in the North-east but across Northern Nigeria to support Atiku when the time comes.

PoliticsAbdulaziz Yari: I Haven’t Forfeited $669,248, ₦24.3 Million To FG by jarawa(op): 9:04am On Feb 01, 2021
A former Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, has dismissed media reports that he has finally forfeited $669,248 and N24.3 million to the Federal Government.

statement by his spokesperson, Mayowa Oluwabiyi, on Sunday said although Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had ruled that Yari should forfeit $669,248 and N24.3 million to the government, the court gave him 14 days to show cause why he should not forfeit the money.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had instituted a suit, praying the court for the former governor to show cause why the money under investigation should not be finally forfeited to the Federal Government.

“Proceeds of unlawful activity”

The ICPC had alleged that the funds were proceeds of unlawful activity.

The statement said the ex-governor’s legal team has already begun the process of appealing the judgement at the court of appeal.

According to the statement, the former governor had no reason to fear because he declared all the companies and businesses he had to the Code of Conduct Bureau on assumption of office.

It further said that the CCB had cleared all the businesses.

It enjoined members of the public to await the final determination of the case and expressed optimism that it will vindicate the former governor.

In August 2019, a federal high court in Abuja granted permission to ICPC to freeze various sums of money in bank accounts traced to the former governor of Zamfara State, Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari.

Justice Taiwo Taiwo gave the permission when he ruled on an ex parte motion filed by ICPC ordering that all the accounts containing $669, 248.89 and N24.3 million, domiciled with Polaris and Zenith banks respectively, be frozen.

PoliticsNDLEA Seizes N30bn Cocaine, Heroin At Lagos Airport by jarawa(op): 7:39pm On Jan 30, 2021
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has said that it seized a consignment of cocaine and heroin worth N30 billion at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in Lagos State.

The spokesman of the agency, Mr. Jonah Achema, said on Saturday in Abuja that the drugs were seized from Onyejegbu Ifesinachi Jennifer, a 33-year-old lady, who arrived Nigeria on Wednesday from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

According to him, the seizure weighing 26.840 kilograms is the biggest single seizure from an individual in the past 15 years.

Achema said that the drugs were seized after she was searched in line with NDLEA protocol profiling passengers “from high risk countries”.

“Field test was conducted on the recovered substances and proved positive to Cocaine and weighed 26.850 kilograms. The suspect who is a hair stylist and based in Brazil was interviewed and she confessed to have agreed to smuggle the hard drug for the sum of N2m only,” he said.

The NDLEA spokesman said that though she refused to disclose the names of her associates, the suspect said that she was asked to hand over the drugs to another person.

“The street value of this singular seizure is put at over N21 million.

Similar incident

“This development came on the heels of a similar one recorded two days earlier at the same airport, on January 25, 2021 when a red left-over luggage was declared to the NDLEA operatives as a left over at the E-arrival hall after the inward clearance of passengers on Ethiopian airline.

“Based on information on the luggage tag, the luggage arrived Nigeria from Sao Paulo, Brazil, a destination classified as high-risk country going by records and trends of arrest and seizures.

“Subsequently, the bag was transferred to the NDLEA Legal Seat being the administrative office at the passenger terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, for detention.

“While this was going on, the NDLEA Commander at the MMIA, Ahmadu Garba received an intelligence report of a purported plan to clear a consignment containing hard drugs through the Lagos airport.

“The details sent matched the bag earlier detained by the operatives at the Lagos airport. In a coordinated operation, on January 27, 2021, an NDLEA undercover agent was contacted by one Abubakar Aliyu.

“Guided by the operation and investigation unit, the undercover agent successfully lured the said Abubakar Aliyu into the cargo terminal of the airport where he was arrested. The suspect revealed to NDLEA operatives that another person was on his way to receive the bag based on the instruction of his sender who he gave his name as Ikechukwu Eze,” Achema said.

Arrest

He said that one Emmanuel Iyke Aniebonam was subsequently arrested based on the information given by Aliyu.

According to him, Emmanuel confessed that he was instructed by one Ikechukwu to receive the consignment.

He said, “Emmanuel was again set up to lure in Ikechukwu Eze but rather than showing up to get the consignment from Emmanuel, he sent another who said he was mandated to receive the consignment from him, and they agreed to meet at Ibis Royal Hotel, a few miles away from the airport.

“A follow-up operation was quickly organised to the hotel, where one Onwurah Kelvin was arrested and brought to the office.”

He added that the detained bag was opened in the presence all the three suspects, and whitish powdery substances were discovered neatly concealed and sewn inside five children duvets.

He said that field test was carried out on the exhibits which proved they are cocaine weighing 8.400 Kilograms, with a street value of over N7bn.

PoliticsCsos Ask National Assembly Give Nigerians New Electoral Act In 3 Months by jarawa(op): 7:30pm On Jan 30, 2021
A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) have urged the National Assembly to uphold citizens’ recommendations in developing a new electoral law for the country in the first quarter of this year.

This is contained in a jointly signed statement by YIAGA Africa, Centre for Liberty, NESSACTION, Raising New Voices, Millennials Active Citizenship Advocacy Africa, and ReadyToLeadAfrica.

The eighth National Assembly had passed the bill and transmitted it to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent.

But Buhari withheld his assent to the bill on the grounds that the proposed law would usurp the constitutional powers of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to decide on election matters and would create “some uncertainty about the legislation to govern the process”.

The CSOs said the ninth assembly under the leadership of Ahmad Lawan, senate president, and Femi Gbajabiamila, speaker of the house of representatives, promised Nigerians a new electoral law by the first quarter of 2021.

“We rely on the leadership of the National Assembly to ensure that this goal is achieved. We hold the National Assembly to its commitment to release the proposed bill this first quarter of 2021,” they said.

According to them, the national assembly joint committee on INEC and electoral matters had invited citizens to a public hearing in December, where several recommendations were provided.

The CSOs said the lawmakers should include the recommendations made during the public hearing as they meet to deliberate on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
