* ‘Suspense’ at EFCC * Nigerians in the dark – CSOs * Why govt needs to speak – Lawyers Four days after he was picked by security operatives, the presidency is yet to officially communicate to Nigerians on the probe of the suspended acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu. Also, no official statement has been issued on the suspension of the EFCC boss, just as Nigerians await a presidential announcement on Magu’s successor. There is confusion as to who is in charge of the anti-corruption agency at the moment following the detention of Magu as some names have been flying in the media while relevant authorities keep mum. Lawyers, anti-corruption crusaders and civil society groups yesterday knocked President Muhammadu Buhari and other federal government officials over the alleged “shoddy manner” the Magu debacle was being handled. Since on Monday, July 6, 2020, when the Magu issue became public, the presidency did not issue any official statement on the matter, leaving Nigerians guessing and the media speculating. Magu, who is seen as the face of President Buhari’s corruption war, is being grilled by a presidential panel chaired by a former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, over corruption allegations. The Buhari Osinbajo Support Front (BOSF) has tackled Jackson Ude, a former media aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan over claims linking the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo to the suspended Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, Ibrahim Magu. In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Liberty Olawale Badmus, the group condemned the claim made by Ude that ‘Magu gave money to the Vice President’. The statement titled “Magu: Reports linking Osinbajo to stolen EFCC billions another PDP Dubai strategy by fake news merchant Jackson Ude – BOSF” described the allegations as ‘not only an irresponsible lie, but a concocted move to smear campaign against Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.’ Badmus said the allegations were made to tarnish the reputation of the Vice President ahead of 2023 election adding that “He (Ude) will use any and all opportunities his devious mind sees to achieve that. “While he claims knowledge of ongoing Magu investigation, the truth is that Ude has no information whatsoever neither is he connected to any credible source that might hint him about goings-on”. Badmus added that the allegations were staged to divert attention from the ‘link between PDP leaders and Ramon Olorunwa Abbas aka Hushpuppi.’ On the allegation leveled against Magu, the group said “it is on record that the EFCC chairman never mentioned the Vice President’s name and that all the news by Ude was concocted. Not only is he not close to the proceedings, but he also lacks the credibility of any kind.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/magu-group-condemns-reports-linking-osinbajo-to-stolen-efcc-funds.html |
…Forecasts $236.7bn GDP loss for Africa’s economies The African Development Bank (AfDB) has estimated that additional 49.2 million Africans could be pushed into extreme poverty trap by the COVID-19 pandemic, out of whom 3.4 million would be Nigerians. This is even as the development finance institution, in its African Economic Outlook 2020- Supplement released Tuesday, projected that cumulatively, GDP losses of Africa could range between $173.1bn and $236.7bn in 2020-2021. The report stated: “Although the number of extreme poor in Africa was projected to reach 425.2 million in 2020 under the no-outbreak scenario, COVID 19 could increase it further, from 453.4 million in the baseline scenario to 462.7 million under the worst-case scenario, increases of 28 and 37.5 million. In 2021, the number would increase by 34-49.2 million under alternative scenarios’ as GDP growth continues to trail population growth rates” the report said. According to report, “Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo, two of Africa’s most populous countries, would record the largest increases – 8.5 and 2.7 million respectively in the baseline scenario in 2020, and 11.5 and 3.4 million in the worst-case scenario.” The report indicated that the “West and Central Africa would have higher concentrations of people falling into poverty from the pandemic. Households living in the West and Central African regions would face a higher risk of falling into extreme poverty due to the pandemic than households in other regions. On Gross Domestic Product, the report indicated that “Africa could suffer GDP losses in 2020 between $145.5 billion (baseline) and $189.7 billion (worst case)” as against the pre-COVID-19 estimates of African GDP’s growth of $2.59 trillion for 2020. According to the AfDB, “some losses are carried over to 2021, as the projected recovery would be partial.” “For 2021, the projected GDP losses the AfDB said could be from $27.6 billion (baseline) up to $47 billion (worst case) from the potential GDP of $2.76 trillion without the pandemic” it indicated. According to the report, “the most affected economies are those with poor healthcare systems, those that rely heavily on tourism, international trade, and commodity exports, and those with high debt burdens and high dependence on volatile international financial flows.” “The overall impact of the pandemic on socioeconomic outcomes remains uncertain, however. It will depend crucially on the unfolding epidemiology of the virus, the extent of its impacts on demand and supply, the effectiveness of public policy responses, and the persistence of behavioral changes” the report said. Twitter Inc on Thursday took down an image tweeted by the U.S. President, Donald Trump, from its platform, after receiving a copyright complaint from the New York Times. The background picture was taken by a New York Times photographer, to accompany a feature article on then presidential candidate Trump in September 2015. Twitter now displays the message: “This image has been removed in response to a report from the copyright holder,” in place of the tweet. The move by the social media site is the latest instance of content posted by Trump being flagged or removed, due to what Twitter says are copyright complaints, violation of its policy on threatening violence, among others. Twitter removed the image after it received a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) complaint from the New York Times, which owns the rights to the photo, according to a notice posted on the Lumen Database. Report says the database collects and analyses legal complaints and requests for removal of online materials. Twitter began challenging Trump’s tweets in May and has repeatedly clashed with him since then. The president has threatened to change laws on social media after Twitter labelled one of his tweets about postal voting inaccurate and hid a tweet about looting, which Twitter said fomented violence. A campaign tribute video to George Floyd, a Black man, who died in Minneapolis police custody, was also disabled by Twitter, Facebook and Instagram on their platforms in June, due to copyright complaints. However, Twitter and NYT did not respond when reached by Reuters for further comment. (Reuters/NAN) Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/twitter-removes-image-tweet-by-trump.html |

A litre of fuel will now sell between N140.8 and 143.8 at filling stations across the country as the Petroleum Product Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) has recommended an upward review of the retail pump price of petrol from the previous N121.50 and N123.50 band. “Please recall the provision for the establishment of a monthly price band within which petroleum marketers are expected to sell PMS at the retail stations, based on the existing price regime,” a statement from the agency said Wednesday. The PPPRA executive secretary Abdulkadir Saidu said: “After a review of the prevailing market fundamentals in the month of June and considering marketers’ realistic operating costs, as much as practicable, we wish to advise a new PMS pump price band of N140.80 – N143.80/litre for the month of July 2020.” Saidu said the new ex-depot price includes the statutory charges of bridging fund, marine transport average, national transport allowance (NTA) and the administrative charge. He also advised all petroleum marketers to operate with the price band advised by the agency. The federal government, in March, announced that the retail price of petrol would be adjusted monthly to reflect realities in the global crude oil market. As the leadership crisis rocking the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) gets messier, the party may be unable to field a candidate for the governorship election in Ondo state scheduled for October 10, 2020.
