“You should not be deterred by the obstacles. You must strive to do more to surmount hurdles. You have demonstrated enough tenacity of purpose. “Your perseverance, resilience and indomitable spirit as good managers of human and material resources have been unparalleled”. These were the inspiring words of Senator Chimaroke Nnamani, Chairman, Senate Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa & New Partnership for Africa Development (NEPAD), to Nigerian women to commemorate the International Women Day (IWD) in Abuja; a disposition, which underscores his determination to stand for the voiceless, downtrodden, deprived, stigmatized and mistreated female folks. In the 9th Senate, Senator Nnamani who is the progenitor of Ebeano political dynasty in Enugu State has been unwavering in championing the rights of women. This is a devotion he ventured into perhaps influenced by his calling as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist with sub-specialization in foetal and maternal medicine. This irrepressible champion of the downtrodden has turned 60 (May 30, 2020). He is arguably overwhelmed by the outpouring of goodwill messages, prayers and accolades for his contributions towards the good of our nation and humanity at large. To his credit, the political landscape and leadership in the coal city State has been midwifed successfully by Nnamani’s Ebeano political family at least since 1999. Some of the issues Senator Nnamani have continued to champion unrepentantly includes but not limited to fundamental rights of women; right to freedom of expression, right to political and economic emancipation as well as right for self-determination and discovery. According to Nnamani, “ I have a social burden for Nigeria and there is the urgent need for this giant of Africa to wake up and champion the process of real development in the continent. “I want to be part of a process that will debate on the project Better Nigeria and to ensure that my constituents get what they deserve as an integral part this country . “I am interested in the fight against poverty, hunger and disease. I will strive to ensure that the health and wellbeing of women and children are given priority. I crave for an egalitarian society where peace, equity and Justice reigns.” French philosopher, Fancois-Marie Arouet, otherwise known as Voltaire once posited in his advocacy for freedom of speech and upholding of the sanctity of human rights that “I may not like what you say or do but I will defend with the last drop of my blood your right to say it”. In other words, “I (may) disapprove of what you say but will defend to the death your right to say it”. This represents Nnamani’s position in the propagation and Defence of women rights. Freedom of speech is unarguably at the core of all fundamental rights, being pivotal to all tenets of democratic participation, social equality, fairness and curtailing excesses of power. Recall that Nigeria in 1994 participated and indeed signed the Beijing, China Declaration and subsequent platform for action adopted by the 4th World Conference on women with representatives from 200 countries to among other things empower, restore the dignity of womanhood and enforce their rights. High points of that declaration was the promotion of women and girls’ rights, involvement in governance in their countries as well as the implementation of the 35 percent affirmative action for women in appointments among others. The Cross River State Commissioner for Health and chairman of COVID-19 response team, Dr Betta Edu, has alleged that the federal government is glorifying COVID-19 through media hype in such a way that every day, people are only told the number of new cases of infection. Dr Edu, who addressed journalists in Calabar, urged the federal government to reduce the media hype on the pandemic. According to her, the attention being given to COVID-19 is at the expense of the high number of deaths from other health challenges like malaria, high blood pressure and diabetes among others. “We have so magnified this issue such that even health workers are abandoning patients with other health challenge to die. People are afraid to even go to hospitals to avoid being tagged COVID-19 positive, everyone is scared. “How many people would we allow to die before Nigeria stops magnifying COVID-19? Maternal mortality claims at least 3000 lives daily, malaria kills at least 1000 daily. High blood pressure, diabetes and other health issues are killing Nigerians, yet we call press conferences on coronavirus as if COVID-19 is a death sentence. “As a state, Cross River has done its best to prevent COVID-19, and all what we get is pressure and knocks. Maybe, we should withdraw our team from our borders, maybe we should step back and begin to reel out figures in thousands to please some people and be politically correct. “Let me use this opportunity to appeal to the federal government, the NCDC, the PTF to support prevention. Prevention should be your pride and not your shame. We hereby leave our fate in your hands,” she said. Edu said the state had not recorded cases of COVID-19, but had sensitized early and put structures in place before the first recorded case of the disease in the country. She expressed sadness that the federal government was refusing to support a state which is doing everything to prevent COVID-19, and instead insinuating that it was covering things up. Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan is the National Publicity Secretary of the leading opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In this interview, he speaks on PDP’s 16 years in governance, how it is faring as opposition party, President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, the 2023 general elections, among others. What are the things the PDP failed to do in its 16 years of reign that the APC has done or is doing? The absolute truth is that in the last five years, President Muhammadu Buhari has failed woefully to fulfil the promises he made; the covenant he made with Nigerians. He has not been able to achieve any of them. Fight against corruption, insecurity and revival of the economy are top on the agenda of this administration. What is your assessment in these areas? The economy is in shambles. He promised to fight from the front against kidnapping, insurgency and banditry. But as we speak today, we have the worst form of this malice. Corruption under President Buhari is worse. If you look at the promises, the commitment, the covenant that he had with Nigerians upon which Nigerians elected him in 2015, he has not been able to fulfil any of them. And you are asking which of those things that the PDP was unable to do that he is doing. In which aspect? In which area? Let us take for instance, even the poor, the almajirai and others, who the APC beguiled and lied to that they were taking them out of suffering and driving them to Eldorado, have been abandoned in the middle of nowhere. Today, you hear about the deportation of almajirai within their own country from one state to another; from their state of residence to their proclaimed state of indigene. The PDP administration built almajirai schools, built universities, polytechnics and many others. In this exclusive interview, an anti-corruption expert, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, expressed mixed feelings over Buhari’s anti-corruption agenda in the last five years. The interview was held with Dr. Suleiman A. Suleiman, Assistant Professor in Politics and researcher in Governance and Public Policy at the American University of Nigeria (AUN), Yola. Excerpts: Has corruption reduced in Nigeria under the Buhari administration in the past five years? I believe there has been a reduction in corruption in the country since Buhari came into power. This is within the context of the government he took over from, the Jonathan administration. We had a government which believed very strongly that it was there to eat, and therefore, they were quite unabashed in terms of their engagement in corrupt practices. Of course, when a government is identified as openly engaging in corruption, then public officers are on their own. They feel they have a license to do what they want to do. So, I think in comparison with the previous government, there is an improvement. But that improvement is not as much as Nigerians had expected. Buhari was elected on the platform of anti-corruption and people have memory of the actions he took when he was in power previously (1983 to 1985), and therefore thought there would be a massive onslaught against corruption and that there would be a significant increase in terms of prosecution of corrupt public officials. The first thing I will draw your attention to is the work of the anti-corruption agencies; the EFCC in particular. When you look at the number, there has been an increase in terms of the number of successful prosecutions they have carried out. At the policy level, I think both the use of Single Treasury Account (STA), as well as the increased use of BVN to crosscheck people’s bank accounts, are significant indicators of a certain will to still fight corruption. I just want to add that there is something which the president feels incapacitated about, as he says repeatedly, that he has to follow the rule of law and that he can’t act the way he acted in 1985. This in a way cripples his capacity to do more than he could have done. But I will point out that there are some things we expected him to do, for example, bringing together all the anti-corruption agencies in one coherent organisation with enhanced powers, as well as setting up an anti-corruption court. When I spoke to his people, what they told me was that the previous National Assembly was hostile to him that was why he couldn’t engage in the legislative agenda. But I think at least he should have tried. If he tried and failed, we will know that he tried. Although there is an improvement, but I think Nigerians are disappointed that the improvement is not as significant as they had expected, and precisely because of that, there has been a lot of concerns. I think there are specific issues that emerged which disappointed Nigerians. One example was when a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, was accused of corruption; even the National Assembly brought out significant facts about that. It took almost a year of pressure before any action was taken. I even felt that was a completely wrong signal from the administration which should have been much more proactive in terms of fighting corruption. The Nigeria Football Federation says it has extended the contract of the Coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, to lead the national team through the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) and the World Cup qualifiers. The President of the football governing body, Amaju Pinnick announced this on Wednesday in a series of tweet through his official twitter handle @PinnickAmaju without revealing the terms and conditions of the contract extension. In the tweet, the president said that; “the @thenff and Coach Gernot Rohr have concluded all contractual discussions and he will stay on as Coach of the Super Eagles”. READ: Rohr given more stringent conditions to remain Super Eagles coach Pinnick believed that the move is a step toward securing ticket for the forthcoming World Cup tournament as well as winning the Nations Cup. “We can now focus on qualifying for the World Cup and winning the Nations Cup. “In truth, these are sacrosanct and Coach Rohr is aware of these conditions,” he added. The tweet added that: “With the distraction of the contract talks out of the way now, we can now face our football on the pitch, totally. “Again, I never lost confidence in Gernot Rohr’s ability to take our football forward and I’m convinced our football will only get better from here on,” Pinnick said. Pinnick also expressed confidence that contract extension would encourage Rohr to give more concentration on the development of football in the country. “We have always had confidence in his abilities and we are confident that the national team can only go higher from here” he said. Ondo State Government has lifted the ban placed on religious activities. The state governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who announced this at a press briefing on Wednesday, said worship centers are to commence their main activities with effect from Friday. This, he said, followed a meeting with religious leaders where they agreed on certain terms. “Worship centers are to commence their main activities with effect from this Friday. “However, such approvals are not blanket and without restrictions”, he said. The governor said: “Only weekly Friday Jumat services and Sunday Church services will commence in the first instance. “Other daily programmes within the week are not yet approved for take off. “Religious leaders and administrators must ensure strict compliance with the social and physical distancing in the places of worship. “In the case of churches, not more than three people are expected to sit on a pew while the equivalent applies to the sitting positions in the mosques and other worship centres as well. “Water and soap must be provided at all entries into the centres or halls of worship. “All worshipers must be made to wash their hands in the standard pattern approved and practised since the beginning of the pandemic. “Hand sanitizers must be provided and used by each worshipper at every entry point to the centres and at other convenient points within the premises. “All worshippers and workers inside the centres and within the premises must wear face masks properly for the duration of the service. “Churches, Mosques and other religious centres must regularly decontaminate and sanitise the premises, facilities and equipment before and after the services.” He stressed that government had placed appropriate machinery in motion to monitor and ensure that the guidelines are implemented to the latter. Cases of infringement, disregard or willful neglect of these extant regulations will be considered as serious threat to the society and will be sanctioned, he added. The governor threatened that any Church, Mosque or worship centre which fails to obey the rules will be shut down immediately. Governor Akeredolu, however, said the state had a total of 24 cases of coronavirus after four were added to the 20 of last week. “13 had been discharged, one dead and six in bed. “Today, four more cases have been added, making a total of 24 cases. “Among the additional four, only one was a case of interstate importation,” he said.
