Before 1971, the US dollar was backed by gold. This meant the United States had promised to exchange $35 for one ounce of gold. But by the early 1970s, countries began to doubt whether the US actually had enough gold to match all the dollars circulating worldwide. As pressure increased, US President Richard Nixon announced in 1971 that the dollar would no longer be convertible into gold. This event is known as the Nixon Shock. At that point, the US realized that oil had become a universal commodity essential to the entire world. Most of the world’s oil reserves were concentrated in the Middle East, especially in Saudi Arabia. The US approached Saudi Arabia with a strategic proposal: any country that wanted to buy oil must pay only in US dollars—not in any other currency. In return, the US would provide security guarantees and protection. For Saudi Arabia’s royal family, this deal made sense. They faced internal threats like religious opposition and the risk of military coups. Agreeing to sell oil exclusively in dollars was not a major sacrifice, since the dollar was already widely used in global trade. Saudi Arabia accepted the deal and then persuaded other members of OPEC to follow the same system. As a result, oil worldwide began to be traded primarily in US dollars. This shift allowed oil prices to be influenced within this dollar-based system. More importantly, it created a permanent global demand for the US dollar. The dollars earned from selling oil came to be known as “petrodollars.”

PRESS RELEASE: West African Youth Congress (WAYC) Condemns Racist and Discriminatory Practices by Chinese Supermarket and Extortion by British School in Nigeria April 23, 2024 The West African Youth Congress (WAYC), a non-governmental youth advocacy organization representing the interests of young people across ECOWAS member states, strongly condemns the discriminatory actions of a Chinese supermarket situated at China General Chamber of Commerce, along Yar'adua Road in Abuja, that has reportedly barred Nigerians from shopping in its facility. Such racist and discriminatory practices are unacceptable, especially when carried out on Nigerian soil. The recent reports of Nigerians being denied access to this establishment based on their nationality is a clear violation of human rights and a demonstration of xenophobia. As an organization committed to equality and justice, WAYC calls on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Trade and Investment and Chinese Embassy, to take immediate action and demand accountability from the said Chinese Supermarket. Furthermore, we urge the Police, Department of State Services and National Intelligence Agency and other law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and order a probe into this criminal behavior. In addition to this, WAYC expresses deep concern over the reported exorbitant school fees charged by Charterhouse, a private British school, which demands 42 million naira per annum for each primary school student and a non-refundable registration fee of 2 million naira. This blatant exploitation of parents and guardians, especially at a time when many citizens struggle with poverty and the minimum wage remains at a mere N30,000 per month, is deplorable. Such practices not only perpetuate inequality but also breed corruption by encouraging those in privileged positions to exploit their advantage for personal gain. We call on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education, British High Commission, Department of State Services and National Intelligence Agency to fulfill their mandates by preventing foreign institutions from extorting Nigerian citizens and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all. WAYC reiterates its commitment to advocating for the welfare and rights of the people of ECOWAS member states, particularly the youth. We recognize that policies and events in Nigeria have socioeconomic and political implications across the region, and we stand in solidarity with all those affected by injustice and discrimination. Signed Amb Mohammed Ahmed Marafa, PSLC Secretary General and Head of the Mission West Africa Youth Congress (WAYC) https://www.facebook.com/share/p/bvwHxeeEiQuuo7vv/?mibextid=xfxF2i

GROUP CONDEMNS AKPABIO’S OUTBURST AGAINST EX-DEPUTY GOV MICHAEL UDOFIA, DEMANDS APOLOGY An Akwa Ibom-based frontline socio political group, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District Frontiers for Unity, has taken a swipe on the Nigeria’s Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, over his outburst on the former deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, revered Elder statesman and knight of the Methodist Church, His Honour, Sir Michael Udofia, describing it as “offensive, jaundiced and disappointing”. Recall that during the funeral service of Late Dr Herbert Wigwe and family, in Port Harcourt, Akpabio in an attempt to respond to Governor Fubara’s decent call on Nigerian politicians to minimize the struggle for power, desperation and the kill and bury attitude, narrated a concocted story of how he aspired to be a deputy Governor in 2006. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-PFfVbeZX0%3Fsi%3D9D-2ZFopobsTUq1O “In 2006, I wanted to be a deputy Governor, so the then deputy Governor invited me and told me that there is no money in the office. So, a woman who went there with me, said: ‘your excellency, since there is nothing in the office, don’t wait to be impeached, just resign and go’. The then deputy Governor stood up and started punching the woman. I told him, don’t punch her, she is telling the truth, since there is nothing in the office, that’s why I want it. You are too big for the office. Governor Fubara, since you say there is no need for the struggle, don’t struggle." Akpabio quizzed. In a press statement issued by the group and signed by its Convener, Comrade Samuel Etim, the group said it received the above outburst with shock and disbelief. The group who further described Akpabio’s remarks as “self confession” expressed very deep shock while decrying that the senate President who as a commissioner in 2006 and close ally to the deputy Governor then, was the master brain behind the unsuccessful impeachment plan of Sir Udofia. They also took strong exception to the ‘crude and gutter languages’ Akpabio employed in his needless response to Governor Fubara’s views during the burial. According to the statement, Sir Michael Udofia became the Deputy Governor in 2005 following the resignation of his predecessor, Engr Chris Ekpenyong and was widely admired for his humility, dedication and commitment to duty. The group therefore expressed worry over Akpabio’s unwarranted utterances while also wondering what would have prompted Akpabio’s interest in an office that wasn’t vacant as he narrated during the funeral. The Statement further reads: “sadly, the Senate President by virtue of his continuous unguarded utterances and his response to the comment made by Governor Fubara has pointed to serious character defect on his person. “It is however not surprising that because of his inglorious attitude, Akpabio decided to act childishly while also talking irresponsibly about a former deputy Governor who has not offended him in anyway. Even though sir Michael Udofia has left government, Akpabio lacks the integrity and morality to make a cock and bull story against him. “Ordinarily, we wouldn’t have been bothered about Senator Akpabio’s usual careless statements, but the allegations of Sir Michael Udofia throwing punches against a woman which suggests gender-based violence, got us perturbed. “It will be a thing of joy if the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio would immediately retract his statement against the former deputy Governor and make public apology to the elder statesman and his kinsmen in the Senatorial district that his speech has given psychology disturbance. “If Akpabio refuses to set the record straight by retrieving his statement and make a public apology, we will be left with no option than to take legal means to seek for justice for a man whose life resonates simplicity, sincerity and godliness. “Also, we are calling on the general public to disregard those allegations on gender-based violence labeled against the former deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State by Senator Akpabio, as such only existed in the figment of Akpabio’s imagination.” Said Comrade Etim. Sir Udofia, a knight of John Wesley, was a retired Permanent Secretary from Ikot Ekpene local government area before his confirmation as Deputy Governor in July 2005 and since his departure from office in 2007, has not been enmeshed in any political controversy. https://independent.ng/group-demands-apology-from-akpabio-over-outburst-against-ex-deputy-gov-michael-udofia/
