Pavore9:Exactly! our people are not aggressive marketers. we love to plant where others have ploughed, nobody wants to break new grounds. |
Somebody HELP!! Aboki rejected our cucumber yesterday at the sabo vegetable market in Ibadan. What was their problem? they said the cucumber is too big. They said it taste good but it is too big. I had received this sort of call from the team in Ibadan twice, and I decided to visit the farm in Ibadan to see exactly what the problem was. We went to the Sabo market, The mallam just kept complaining how they suffered to get the light green watermelon into the market, to displace the dark green one. And after so much trial and "suffering", they succeeded. But now, all around the country, all people want to eat is the light green watermelon. Nobody wants the dark green one. ![]() In few seconds, I began to see what we have done wrong and it became clear to me. We have been putting effort in the wrong direction. Want to know more? I'll be back to complete my story. |
OLAMIMO12:one of 10-15 harvests |
Pavore9:Oh... I see, this might not be the best measuring stick, because the harvest was long overdue. Let's see how their next harvest goes in 3 days time. will update you with the statistics. |
Pavore9:just modified my earlier post. |
Pavore9:oga, the total planted area is about is about 1500 square meter and the harvest was roughly 650kg. Although because of the new specie and the big size and the light green colour. The product has not gained general acceptance in Lagos and Ibadan. People don't like what they don't understand. It calls for aggreasive marketing. But those have accepted it, buy between 100-150 per kg. we are opening a larger market for the variety. |
Remember this project in Ago Amodu? well, this project was almost abandoned by the organizers after the challenges of Labour. but from the harvest from our test plot, they have decided to push it through. If you want to succeed, you can't Let challenges pull you down. Thanks to Jethro2, Kalusam and the team for proving this

I want to specially thank God for those who received the seed I disbursed in January and planted it, I like working with my fellow youth and the young in heart. When I decided to put my work on Nairaland, I got a few discouraging advice. But, I have made some great friends through Nairaland. Especially, in Oyo and Lagos states, people I can be proud to call family. We went on a random harvest from one of the farms in Oyo. despite all the "calamity" the cucumber still thrived and this is what we got from 2 and a half plots.

@Nikashow. Thanks for throwing more light. Usually, I won't stress myself replying. but I see need to clear the air. 1. Both the person who said Prince Chike (Special Advicer to the governor) and the one who said Mrs Ezirim (My Mother) owns/runs the farm, are both right. My mother is the Managing Director of Thai Agro and Prince Chike is the Director of Projects for thai Agro (check their website for more info). I remember in my original posts, mentioning Thai Agro like twice or thrice. 2. There are more than 100 cucumber farms in owerri, this one here is just one of them. Alot of Nairalanders have been to my personal farms and have both harvested and followed me for marketing. I appreciate you all. 3. Alot of Nairalanders have also been to the farm in the pic. Infact somebody like Noblefarm has worked there for a week . Some others that I am not sure of their Nairaland usernames like charles and Juliet. The first thing I made them understand is that "this farm" is not completely mine. Same thing I did on the original post? so, where is all this 2nd guessing coming from? heck, this farm is not that big, there are ones alot bigger than this. If I post those ones, will it now belong to my ancestors? Or is it because Rochas visited the farm? Well, I always admonish people to have as much information as possible before they make comment that question the integrity of another person. I know someone on this forum who poses as a plantain farmer, but I got from one of his close allies, that he doesn't own a single plantain farm. I was about bashing him here on NL, only to discover that due to some constraints he attached his farm to another plantain farm, I called the other plantain farmer and confirmed it. I learnt a big lesson that day, don't throw a word on any matter you are not absolutely sure of. It's too easy to destroy a house, but very difficult to build it back up again. shalom |
nice, seed leaf looking good. can't wait for first true leaf. |
MoneyMerchant:Working with that hydraflo have been a challenge to the team in the farm. It takes water from reserves like Dams, rivers, streams and all that. Not from overhead tanks |
saliubello:Nice one ![]() |

had fun in phollar's farm. Promised myself I'll visit at least 50 farms in Nigeria this year, 9 down, 41 to go. |
OLAMIMO12:am following with full interest. you call it trellis, I call it staking. different nomenclature, the same practice. let me bring my pen and paper to join the class. Hope to benefit from your classes sir |
goodmorning40:Twale! you killed it mehn... |
Signing out... Have to report in the farm by 8:30. Thanks guys for the goodwill and all. It just rained here in ogbomosho which is good news for farmers. |
soloqy:my thoughts exactly. I have to hold the forte o. before people tarnish my image. |
knash1:If you don't know how to farm with your hand, how will you farm with machines? Do I even need to continue showing you how wrong your post is? |
blacq2009:No be banga soup be that? my best soup forever and ever! ![]() |
olalekan1:Your "special adviser" is not the special adviser on crop, he's the special adviser on rice. He is also the project Director of Thai Agro, just curious, is it that you don't know that part, or you didn't see where I gave credit to Thai Agro for the opportunity or is it that you just felt like pointing accusing fingers? At least get your information straight before accusing some body you don't know. A lot of Nairalanders have met him through me and visited "my farm" Jethro2, kalusam, phollar, nikashow, noblefarm e.t.c A word of advice, Look before you leap |
loomer:I hope ur just dragging this for fun sake o. Let it not be that you have not caught my drift all this while... Okay, for the sake of the "fun" let me give it one more shot. Thai Agro own the farm, they called me to set-up/manage the farm. I give them my charges in percentage, which automatically makes me a co-owner/manager. The govt knows Thai Agro, Thai Agro knows me. When the government comes to the farm, who will they ask for? Thai Agro. Thai Agro is not too keen to introduce me to the governor, as a matter of fact, I did not know the governor was coming. I am lucky to meet perm sec and commissioner who appreciate my good work managing the place, give me their card and all that, thereby accessing ministry equipment. is that elaborate enough? or should we continue Q&A session? |
Lebee4:check my topics, I have a thread on my cucumber experience. just read and do your study. ask me any question afterwards |
loomer:who cares about managers? all they want to know is CEO. they don't even care about the assistant CEO. if I may ask you, who is the manager of facebook? or who is the assistant CEO of facebook? That's the cruel world we live in bro. and I have woken up to it. There's only a number 1. number 2 and number 3 are never in the game |
exxell:Hahahaha... bounce cheque? Lol. I don die oooo. No harm done bro, I was more or less sure you didn't really investigate me before commenting. so I took it lightly. I am not a fan of politicians but even if my leader is a hired killer, I appreciate when he thinks I did a great job. despite the fact, I did not make headlines of tabloids. but I hope one day I'll get there. |
loomer:I am the one holding the phone to take pics. you for first ask me if they allowed me close to governor . |
nosike3:PDP!!! . juat kidding bro. but you made me laugh. who told you I didn't rush out to buy groundnut for my guest of honour |
garriboy:yes sir, I agree with you. I am not the best in agribusiness. far from it. I am still working on myself. the reason I said I laugh is not because they are not good at what they do. I believe whatever you have in your hands, start small and expand gradually, you'll be surprised that those government officials you are following up and down might just come after you. That's what I meant. sorry if you misunderstood me. |

. Some others that I am not sure of their Nairaland usernames like charles and Juliet.
I spit on rochas, the op and this thread! I'm out.
