AgricultureWhy I Want To Quit Farming This Year And My Plan For 2016 by jasper7(op): 5:59pm On Jan 29, 2016
I want to quit farming this year... I want to go into processing and marketing of food products. I want to manage farmers. Not because farming is not profitable but because some really good farmers I know are suffering. Really suffering. And that is not down to the abundance of food but because they lack the right management practises. It's a big problem and I want to put in my quota in solving it.

I have been restless for a while now. Very restless. Nigeria's economy is sinking with the price of oil.

Statistics show that Nigeria spent 35billion dollars on food importation in 2015. And made a meagre 350 million from food exportation. This is a serious problem. Nigeria is in Trouble

I am speculating that more Nigerians will die of hunger than boko haram's terrorism in the next 10 years if we do not save our economy.

How can we save this economy of ours... There are areas of agriculture that is sweeping in foreign exchange for the country on a daily basis. And there are other areas that we can close up shop. And stop sending our precious cash abroad.

I have been doing some research. I think every well meaning farmer irrespective of his farming interests should have a level of export product to gain some foreign exchange.

We can turn this economic problem to our favour. We can make it the best thing that has happened to us. Believe me, a lot of attention will be transferred to people with exportable product. Considering that Nigeria is desperately scrambling for ways to revive its economy.

Let's set up plantations, farm settlements an farm estates for exportable products.

Hotmas911 already caught the vision as he is setting up a cashew plantation in ogbomosho (Land of Cashew ).

With this I have tried to streamline what I will do in 2016.

I'll be sharing them in 2 posts. You are welcome to partner, copy, criticize (constructively) or give your own view point or idea to improve what I already have.

Cc My big bro pavore9, Kalusam, hotmas911.

AgricultureRe: I Killed This Giant Wild Cat For Killing My Chickens (Photos) by jasper7(m): 9:20pm On Jan 14, 2016
Tellemall:
Your sort of animal conservation is funny.

Who would buy a giant wild cat? You? You can own a FERAL cat and treat it like a pet?

Or do you suggest taking it to a zoo, because wild cats are endangered species?

Will you not complain when you see more pics of the hungry wild cat in the zoo, because it's not easy to feed the wild cat or cater to it's needs?

You expect people to actually care for a wild animal. It's not domesticated and it won't return your favor.

Sometimes it's irritating to see people try to act civilized when there's no call for it. In developed nations people do kill things that encroach. It's your property, not the animal's.
whoever said anything about animal conservation? I said killing the cat is not economical. maybe he could sell it. and maybe he could get some money. That's all I said. cheers. smiley

their are tons of wild cat in this country
killing one is jus like drop in the ocean
even in d countries with animal control they will do thesame to save their livestock

I don't blame you at all o. I have also recommended that a client killed monkeys that were disturbing his farm. Am just saying that some people would pay some cash for that cat. it would have been more economical that way. wink
AgricultureRe: My Thoughts For 2016 by jasper7(m): 12:30pm On Jan 13, 2016
Pavore9:
I did an experiment on how long cucumber and cabbage can last without refrigeration. I bought 3 cucumbers for 30ksh (N60) and a cabbage for 20ksh (N40)on the 23rd of December from the open market and left them on my kitchen's countertop. The average daytime temperature in my kitchen hovers between 18°C and 20°C while at night is around 15°C. The cucumbers are still looking fresh but they will end their earthly journey tomorrow when l will get them juiced while the cabbage began to degenerate on the 4th of January, so had to juice it up.

This shows farmers with good preservation system can hold on to their harvests for a longer time and not forced to sell off for fear of spoilage . Research is wealth.
you are right sir. these veggies can last very long. especially cucumbers
AgricultureRe: I Killed This Giant Wild Cat For Killing My Chickens (Photos) by jasper7(m): 12:25pm On Jan 13, 2016
as we no get animal control in nigeria. You just slayed a beautiful cat angry. You could easily sell the cat and get some cash. which would have been more economical for you. at least recoup the cost of the dead birds.

9. PACKING & STORAGE

This is one area that have been overlooked by @Jasper & his team.

With the size & magnitude of JIREH1 & Proper packaging, JIREH1 shld be dictating the market trend & not follow the market. You can not be selling in sack like illetrates and hope to make good returns.

With the resoursce at your disposal, you shld be able to channel resources to take care of these & thus distate the market. It's a very STRONG oversight on you part to start JIREH1 without thinking of packaging & storage.

If Tomato section in Mile12 market, Lagos can introduce plastic crates for tomatoes (through DFID/UKaid), so cld JIREH1

Hey guys, you all remember Project Jireh? Invest in my 20 hectare cucumber/watermelon farm? If you don't, read up
https://www.nairaland.com/2199401/invest-20-hectare-watermelon-cucumber

Well, the project came with a lot of challenges, it was not easy at all. I can remember that at some point, someone speculated the project has collapsed. LOL. I read and I laughed. I mean, I knew what I was looking for, and I was on course to getting it. The pressure was not easy to deal with, but we are here.

I shared the challenges here.... https://www.nairaland.com/2781897/learn-success-well-mistakes

It was not easy o. at all. But in the words of M.I. "How can I lose when I am with the best team?"

The Jireh team are super super amazing, super smart, super hard working, super dedicated. I doff my hat for all my Jireh brothers and sisters. Y'all brought us here. Even when the project looked hopeless you guys came through.

Secondly, My wonderful partners, from TAI to our esteemed investors, you guys were amazing, considerate and very cool. Even when things looked ugly, You guys were all smiles.

We are here, We made it. I remember opening Jireh 1 here. And I want to declare Jireh 1 officially closed. Now we have moved on to Jireh 2. Thank You Jesus!
