PoliticsRe: Why Are African Countries Backward Both Socially And Economically ? by jaysniggs: 2:55pm On Jun 15, 2015
tonychristopher:
nigeria should be the beacon and pathfinder of black but look at the sorry state we found ourselves ....we jumped from frying own to fire

We need an inspirational and intelligent leader not a gerontocrat. I do not have apologies ..we should be able to sort out our domestic problem ....not begging the west

How can buhari beg the west to assist them to quash BOKO boys ....did China beg west ?

I think the earlier we start believing in our capacity and capabilities the best for us
There isn't one particular problem with Africa, rather there are multiple deadly problems that are with Africa.
The west is just a single problem, and the reason they have gotten this far in ruining Africa is because our leaders are not pratiotic.
You need to know since when these western powers have been taunting us, its a shame when you hear that Ajaokuta is being hindered by external forces to achieve its full potentials.
If our leaders were to be patriotic Ajaokuta would have transformed Nigeria in the infrastuctural sector since when its commentment.
Ask yourself, is there is a nation that is modernised without steel?

Another Problem is Most African citizens aren't aware of the fact that their leaders deserve to serve them and not vice versa.

Another are the constitutions that allow Nigerian lawmakers make away with so much unimaginable fortune monthly while their people lavishly spend abject poverty.

Another is the inability of Africans to think and be innovative!
We need to sit down and plan for the future, but can we when we didn't plan for the present?
I mean who should start producing, we should start making industries that can compete globaly.
We should move more to science!

And there are so many more like corruption, selfishness, greed among africans.
Its goes on and on and on

Just imagine that lovely Nigeria, that sweet Nigeria that country who used to be a laughing stock now a world power!
Think of we leading the entire black race!
Think of we teaching the world!
I think my Igbo producers should be dominating the world trade globally!
I wish my Odua people to build, make, invent for the world to copy!
My Huasa family should feed the entire planet!
Then think about the green passport, imagine the glory it would represent for as many as they that hold it.
You see its that easy so far we can kick out these problems
Trust me the so called whites are superior because they adopted science.
Africa will change for the better only if we do so.

Oh and yeah we must LOVE ourselves if we are to reach anywhere.
The first rule is LOVE if only we love ourselves, then we can attain that beautiful Nigeria!
PoliticsRe: The Western Media's Portrayal Of Africa by jaysniggs: 10:19am On Jun 14, 2015
ijebuman:
I think people don't understand the point i was trying to make apart from Pearl2. All i'm asking for is balance, you hardly hear anything positive reported about Africa. The whole continent is tarred with the same brush despite the fact that there a lot of positive things happening in many African countries.
Countries like Ghana, Botswana, Namibia, SA etc are making a lot of progress but no one hears about them. Only the negative is portrayed. The average viewer in a western country has no idea about what Africa is really like apart from what he keeps seeing on TV.
Its so sad that even Africans born outside the continent associate Africa with only poverty and disease. I know Nigerian kids scared of visiting Nigeria because of all the stuff they "hear about Africa"

This is such a sad statement to make, how much foreign "aid" are we talking about here. How many African countries do you think gets foreign aid (which is quite different from loans). If this is the basis for supporting the negative portrayal of Africa then i'm sorry brother, you're playing the "victim".
You think the paltry sums they throw our way to ease their consciences is because of the sad scenes politicians see on TV. For all the foreign aid sent to Africa there are always conditions attached to it, nothing is free my brother.
Its like here's some aid but you need to remove all restrictions to imports from our country or here's some money but we need to set up a military base in your country.
The amount of aid provided to Israel alone is far more than what the US spends in the whole of Africa. Does the US give money to Israel because the israelis are starving?

As Africans we don't need aid from these countries, what we need is for them to stop interfering in the affairs of the continent
- by allowing fair trade agreements so African raw materials are sold at fair prices not at prices determined in western countries.
- by not encouraging conflicts by selling weapons to both sides of a conflict (e.g Sudan, Congo, Rwanda)
- allowing their multinationals to pollute and degrade our environment
- allowing our corrupt politicians to stash money in their banks and providing them safe havens
- Supporting dictators that end up destroying their countries (e.g Mobutu in Zaire supported by US et al throughout his tyrannical reign, Rwandan Hutu leadership that carried out the Tutsi genocide was supported by France etc)

I could go on, hope you get the gist.
It's hypocritical, because western governments and their multinationals are part of the problems in Africa yet their media will highlight the problems without providing a proper historical analysis of why the problems are happening.

Oh and another thing that is becoming prevalent in western countries is 'donor fatigue'. This is a situation where people are so tired of seeing negative images from Africa that it doesn't prick their consciences anymore.

Well the people i know (myself included) are proud of our Nigerian heritage and we're constantly working to improve things and change perceptions. If you're so ashamed of your country/continent you can do something about it by supporting African charities. You can start by sponsoring an African child at Plan - http://www.plan-uk.org/becomeasponsor/
9 years after you said this and Africa still tows the destructive path.
CultureRe: Top 5 Ways To Develop Africa by jaysniggs: 8:31am On Jun 14, 2015
Udmaster:
I am a strong believer that we Africans have what it takes to develop our wonderful continent and match up to the western world.
Here are 5 ways I think A.U should adopt inorder to develop Africa.

1} ONE CURRENCY- Africa 54 countries should come together and have One currency which will be spearheaded by a Central Bank Of Africa. This Continent have the costly and highly wanted natural resources to add monetary value to this Currency. It will be the most valued in the world and poor African Countries will benefit greatly from this decision.

2} A BIG JOINT AFRICAN ARMY- African should have one big gigantic Army which will be well equipt and fortified. This kind of Army will crush Boko Haram and all terrorist groups in Africa.

3} INTRA- AFRICAN TRADE- Lets put an end to this "made in china" mentality. Let African 54 countries trade within themselves and help each other economy. For example, let start seeing "made in Botswana" products in Nigeria, or "made in Gabon" products in Zambia.

4} AN ANTI- CORRUPTION COURT IN AFRICA- Any Corrupt African President should be arrested by the Big Joint African Army and prosecuted in this African Anti-Corruption Court.

5} ONE AFRICAN INFRASTRUCTURE MASTERPLAN- African cities should be renovated, rehabilitated and built with one style of Infrastructure masterplan.. Europe did it after world war 2 and beautify their cities.. Africa should adopt it.

6} ACTUALLY TAKE BACK OUR MINERAL RESOURSES- Our minerals are owned exploited (together with local populations who are the real owners.) from the colonial times till now.
Raw materials from Africa go to create jobs (after their colonial exploiters transfer most of the profits back into their own economies) for industries in Europe and the US.

GOD BLESS AFRICA.
Of all your point, there is one I find funny.
You want a Africa to develp yet you want the single currency be superheaded by a central bank?
Isn't that fetching water into a basket?
The CBNs are owned by a family in Europe.
Until we create our own form of banking, our different eceonomic strategy, we can't move forward.
We are still gonna be cheated by the oppressors.

Very good!.

Malaysians, Indonesians, in fact all South East Asian countries have learnt their lessons from Colonialism and have scrapped the old colonial school curriculum that kept them in mental slavery and poverty. Only the right type of education can set us free. Unfortunately, Africa is still no way near laying the foundation for true education without any colonial hangover. A system of education that will see us grow in economic independence and real freedom. Africa should do same!.

Until we scrap the old colonial missionary style of education that we inherited from colonialism, we will continue churning out educated fools from our schools.

Details:-

My take is to kill the naira and breed a new currency that is backed solely by gold.
That of course comes with a short term pain but a long term benefit.

In summary, Tinubu wants government to print more naira to support and develop critical infrastructure. He thinks that government should not depend on revenues from crude oil to develop critical infrastructure, government should rather print money to build infrastructure like roads etc.

I like the idea but I doubt Buhari will.

PoliticsRe: Dangote Partners Honeywell To Operate U.S.$9 Billion Lekki Refinery by jaysniggs(op): 5:47pm On May 14, 2015
Sweetguy25:
The point I'm driving at is that if our national refineries don't get repaired before Dangote's refinery starts operating, then our national refineries are as good as dead. It will be very difficult to compete against an efficiently managed private owned refinery. The federal government will have no option but to sell the refineries below their market value.
Last time I checked a survey was conducted on how long it would take to repair the exisiting refineries, and it was about a year,
Now with the new governement's emphasis on refineries, we should repair our old refineries and upgrade them before 2018.

Hopefully all goes as planned, we'll have our old refinieries plus this one producing more fuels and petrochemicals for Nigeria.
More money money for us man.
There will be no fuel scarcity
Trust me fuel price is gonna drop in Nigeria.
More fuel to power the insane 400 car/day import in Nigeria.
More jobs man.

So if this refinery is built, what happens to the Nigerian owned ones?
Look this is to be a world class refinery that will drastically reduce our over dependence on imported fuels and petrochemicals we can produce here in Nigeria, the other refiniries are going to be repaired and upgraded.
This will bring create more jobs by the time we start producion.
PoliticsDangote Partners Honeywell To Operate U.S.$9 Billion Lekki Refinery by jaysniggs(op): 4:18pm On May 14, 2015
By Sulaimon Salau
The much-awaited Dangote oil refinery slated for Lekki area of Lagos will be operated by the Honeywell technology, sequel to the approval of Dangote group.

The proposed oil refinery situated in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos is expected to be functional by the first half of 2018, with an estimated production template of about 500,000 barrels per day.

With this capacity, the refinery is described as the largest single refinery in Africa. A statement made available to The Guardian yesterday said, "Honeywell technology has been selected to run the largest refinery in Africa.

Dangote Oil Refining Company selected UOP technology for a world-scale integrated refinery and petrochemical plant to be built in Lekki, near the capital of Lagos in southwestern Nigeria."

UOP LLC, a sister company of Honeywell technology, however stated that its process technology, catalysts and proprietary equipment would form the basis for the largest refinery in Africa, which is aimed at reducing Nigeria's dependence on imported fuels and petrochemicals.

Senior Vice-President and General Manager of UOP's Process, Technology and Equipment business, Pete Piotrowski, said: "UOP has been designing state-of-the-art refineries and petrochemical plants for more than a century, so we are well-equipped to help Nigeria develop a massive new installation to meet its domestic needs,"

According to him, "This project will enable Dangote to improve Nigeria's oil refining capabilities, reduce the country's dependence on imports, and work to revive and transform the Nigerian economy."

In addition to processing crude oil to produce high-quality gasoline, diesel and jet fuel that meet Euro V specifications for reduced emissions, the group said the new facility would produce world-scale quantities of polypropylene, a key petrochemical used in plastics and packaging.

Honeywell however stressed that UOP technologies at this facility would include: the UOP Resid Fluid Catalytic Cracking process to produce transportation fuels from crude oil. It will also supply propylene, which will be used as a feedstock for polypropylene.

Others include: The CCR Platforming™ process to produce high-octane gasoline blending components; the Unicracking™ process to produce diesel; the Penex™ process to produce high-octane gasoline; the crude distillation unit (CDU) design, which will be provided by UOP's alliance partner, Process Consulting Services To complement the technology licensing and design services, the UOP said it was working with Dangote to provide catalysts, adsorbents and proprietary equipment for the project.

The Dangote Industries' operations director for petroleum refining, Mr. George Nicolaides, had earlier assured that the site is being cleared, the plant is at detailed engineering level with estimations that it would be completed and start operation by 2018.

He said the Dangote group got a $3.3 billion loan with 12 Nigerian and foreign lenders to build the refinery as well as a petrochemical and fertilizer complex costing a total of $9 billion.

"Supplying the local market is the primary objective. Naturally we can move product to the region. The government is being very supportive, very enthusiastic about this project. We are not looking for or wanting any particular subsidies." Nicolaides added.
