Nairaland is African biggest forum. The forum is as old as Facebook.

Facebook worked hard to lock competitors out of business by consistent upgrading of their website UX (User experience)

Today more forums emerged. A Twitter like forum is available to compete with Nairaland.

Ukraine had a large portion of students and nationals from Africa and Asia, many of them were facing segregation based on skin color during boarder crossing. Especialiy for third-country nationals living in Ukraine who were fleeing without the support of their own countries.

Videos and stories prompted an outcry on social media, showing chaos of nonwhite people being left stranded at stations and blocked in lines at the checkpoints.

African nations had condemned discrimination against African citizens at the Ukrainian border in the UN meeting. After Ukraine's Minster of Foreign Affairs Kuleba responded to the discrimination, many netizens criticized media outlets for being blind to racism exhibited against nonwhite nationals, pushing refugees seeking help through social media.

Representatives from the three African nations on the UN Security Council -- Kenya, Ghana, and Gabon -- all condemned reports of discrimination against African citizens at the Ukrainian border during a meeting at the UN HQ in New York City Monday.

There have been widespread reports from African students fleeing the country that they faced segregation, racism and abuse.

"In the unfolding emergency, there have been disturbing reports about the racist treatment of Africans and people of African descent seeking to flee Ukraine to safety. The media is covering these appalling incidents and several states have confirmed that their citizens are suffering such treatment. We strongly condemn this racism and believe that it is damaging to the spirit of solidarity that is so urgently needed today.

"The mistreatment of African peoples on Europe's borders needs to cease immediately, whether to the Africans fleeing Ukraine or to those crossing the Mediterranean," Kenyan Ambassador to the UN Martin Kimani said Monday.

The African Union has said it is "disturbed" by the reports of segregation against Africans in Ukraine, which it described as "shockingly racist."

Foreign students fleeing Ukraine say they face segregation, racism at border
"Reports that Africans are singled out for unacceptable dissimilar treatment would be shockingly racist and in breach international law," a statement by the AU said Monday.
The 54 member bloc urged countries to "show the same empathy and support to all people fleeing war notwithstanding their racial identity."
Kimani added that the Security Council needs "to be able to understand that there are actors who want to magnify this story for cynical reasons that have nothing to do with the wellbeing and safety of Africans."
He also thanked Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia for allowing Kenyan citizens fleeing Ukraine visa-free entry into their countries.
Ghanaian Deputy Ambassador to the UN Carolyn Oppong-Ntiri echoed the sentiment in her remarks, calling for the facilitation of persons fleeing Ukraine "without discrimination" and to provide them with humanitarian assistance, "including medical care in line with the principles of humanity, neutrality, and impartiality."
The UN Ambassador from Gabon called reports of racism "unacceptable."
"We ask for the respect of the dignity and for equitable treatment of all people in dire circumstances. It is an opportunity for my country to recall the African Union appeal for respect of international law that requires equal treatment for all people who cross international borders in conflict areas," Ambassador Michel Xavier Biang said Monday.

Foreign students attempting to flee Ukraine after Russia invaded the country, told CNN that they experienced racial discrimination at the Ukrainian border.
The fleeing students, comprising mainly Indian and African nationals, accused Ukrainian security forces and border officials of showing various forms of prejudice against foreign students.
Ukrainian border authorities have denied these allegations.

PoliticsRussia-ukraine War: Nigerian Students Trekked 60km To Poland With No Food by jazzme1(op): 6:35am On Mar 02, 2022
Nigerian student faced with cold weather, hunger and lack of some basic necessities.

According to some students who fled the war-torn cities in Ukraine, Nigerians were in a difficult situation due to long traffic gridlock and congestion of refugees at the border with Poland.

The stranded Nigerians alleged that they were not getting the desired attention from Nigerian diplomats at some borders in Poland, despite the situation they found themselves in.

But at the Ukraine- Romania border, a report from the Nigerian mission indicated that the Nigerian envoys were assisting Nigerians that fled from Ukraine.

Abduljalil Adam Bayero, a Nigerian student leader from the City of Tunabil in Ukraine, has said that prolonged traffic gridlock had made the students trek for over 30 km. He said some trekked for over 5 hours before they could reach the border with Poland.

According to him, officials on the border with Poland gave attention only to those who came in vehicles and to women and children.

He said Nigerians had to trek after crossing the border, before getting a vehicle to embark on a journey to Warsaw, the capital city of Poland.

According to him, the Nigerians found themselves in. a place that was the coldest in the world.

He alleged they were in tents without mats and blankets.

He said the journey to Warsaw was by road which took about 6 hours, but the Nigerians do not even have the vehicles to embark on the journey.

He explained that perhaps there might be Nigerian diplomats in other places but when he visited the border, there was no presence of any Nigerian diplomat to assist the Nigerian students from Ukraine.

He said at the 2 major borders, the Nigerian students were left with no official representation.

According to him, even in Warsaw, some Nigerian students couldn’t get a place to stay and relied on fellow students for assistance.

Another Nigerian student on his way to Warsaw, Abubakar Babaji said they were in difficulties on their way to Warsaw.

” Although I did not face racist acts, our friends told us and I saw the video.”

” They will say if you cross the border call this number, but you will call the number but the call won’t go through. “

” My legs have swollen I’m just looking for a place to rest,” he said.

Many Nigerian students were in the open in extreme cold, with no food and blankets.

They said their phones would soon stop functioning because there was nowhere to charge.

The BBC Hausa Service reports on Tuesday that the Nigerian Government would commence evacuation of the students back home on Wednesday.

About 5,500 Nigerians mostly students from Ukraine were on their way to Poland, Romania; Slovakia and Hungary due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

ProgrammingNigerian School Girls Emerge Finalists Of $960k Global Prize For Developing Anti by jazzme1(op): 4:55pm On Feb 28, 2022
Two Nigerian schoolgirls have emerged finalists of the 2021 Young Tycoon Business Challenge after presenting a business idea for an app that could tackle kidnapping and abduction in schools.

The girls, Chioma Abone and Emmanuel Ilok, both students of Greensprings School in Lagos, said their product will use wearable technology to address the disturbing cases of abduction in Nigeria, especially those involving school children.

While presenting their idea to the Young Tycoon Business panellists, the students explained that their solution is twofold; an app called Airguard app and a supporting wearable that will help alert family and friends if they are in danger.

“We decided to work on an idea about a company called Paramount Guard, which seeks to offer security services to school students, not only in Nigeria but all over the world. The company plans to introduce AirGuard Wearable, which pairs with the AirGuard App to help students quickly alert family members and friends when in critical situation or a state of emergency.”

Chioma Abone and Emmanuel Ilok
The girls said they were inspired by the insecurity in the country because as students, they are not happy with the news of the constant abduction of fellow students in some parts of Nigeria.

The Young Tycoon Business Challenge is a competition for High (Secondary) School students who have entrepreneurship ideas. Its aim is to engage aspiring entrepreneurs from across the world and granting them access to mentorship by Silicon Valley leaders.

More than 7,000 participants applied from 80 countries around the world. After three rounds of pitching and developing solid business ideas, 28 finalists have been selected to pitch at a later round.

The winning team will get $960,000 worth of prizes; $10,000 in cash and $950,000 in benefits. They will also participate in workshops Entrepreneurship Clubs of Ivy League Schools.

Five Nigerian Girls Win $10,000 App Award at the Technovation World Challenge
Nigerian students have shown great technological acumen, especially on the global stage. Recall that in 2018, a 10-year-old Nigerian primary school pupil, Kambinachi Kanu, emerged winner of the 2018 edition of Ericsson’s Girls who Innovate competition under the 9-12-year-old category.

Similarly, a team of 5 Nigerian students; Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo, and Vivian Okoye, emerged winner of the $10,000 Junior Gold Awards at the 2018 Technovation World Challenge held in California. The students developed an app that detects fake drugs.

In 2019, another group of 5 Nigerian students, Ayomikun Ariyo, Ivana Mordi, Jadesola Kassim, Munachiso Chigbo and Pandora Onyedire developed an educational app with which they competed at the Technovation Awards Finals held in Silicon Valley.

One could only hope these young innovators are afforded the perfect environment to thrive here in Nigeria.

Arsenal Manager, Mikel Arteta believes there were people inside the club who were looking to hurt the club.

According to Mikel Arteta, the big positive he will take from Arsenal’s season is the way they stuck together while people inside and outside of the club were trying to hurt them.

He said: “There were ‘a lot of things’ that contributed to that costly loss of form and believes that there were even people inside the club who were trying to ‘hurt’ the Gunners.

“The best thing has been to keep a team, a staff, employees and everybody together?

“In those circumstances when you are not winning and when there are so many people, some inside and some outside trying to hurt.

“To keep them together and block that and be so strong, I think that is some achievement, as normally when that happens, that cracks and everything falls and it didn’t.”

When asked whether those people who were trying to do damage from the inside were still at the club, Arteta said: “No.”

PoliticsLinking My NIN To My Phone Number Gives Terrorists Control Over My Information by jazzme1(op): 4:33am On May 15, 2021
A Nigerian socio-political activist and co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls Movement, Aisha Yesufu has said that she will not link her National Identification Number to her phone number as required by the Federal Government.

In a tweet with the hashtag #PantiMustGo, she wrote:
“Let me repeat categorically what I have said before. I WILL NOT BE LINKING MY NIN to my phone number! I will rather not have a phone line than willingly give my information and have it in the control of a terrorist sympathiser and his cohorts #PantamiMustGo,”

PUNCH reports that the call for Pantami’s sacking or resignation is a result of a sermon he delivered in the past which had him allegedly sympathising with terrorist groups – Al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

Recall that Pantami was, however, backed by the Presidency through the Senior Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, who said the minister was young when he made those statements and that his position had since changed.
Reacting through a video in April, Yesufu said, “The Presidency is not Garba Shehu and Muhammadu Buhari. The Presidency is an institution and that institution should never be seen in any way whatsoever supporting someone who is now known to have been a terrorist sympathiser.
“We cannot be a nation that allows people who support terrorism to be out there in our public domain as public servants. We cannot have a minister of a sector that is so sensitive – as per our information, everything under that sector – be someone who is a terrorist sympathiser, whether has been, still is, repented or not.”

PoliticsBiafra Is The Reason Why The North Don’t Want Restructuring - Senator Abaribe by jazzme1(op): 3:40am On May 15, 2021
On Thursday, while delivering a keynote address at the Bar Week of the Awka branch of the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA. Senate minority leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe revealed why the Northern Nigeria don’t want Nigeria to be restructured.
He said: “Whenever we talk of restructuring in the national assembly, some of our colleagues from the north will say, is it not for you to have Biafra?”

“Yes, I want Biafra, but I want Biafra of the mind, not Biafra on land. I believe that people can develop their areas in a properly restructured Nigeria.

“We in the South East can be the richest part of Nigeria through our hard work.

“I don’t believe we can get what we want through anarchy. We can get what we want by doing the needful, which is encouraging ourselves to participate in the planned constitutional amendment. It is better for us to make Nigeria a more conducive place to live in, than this blood we are spilling every day. If things are not working properly, there will always be agitation.

He also condemned the increasing wave of killing of security operatives and burning down police stations in the South East, describing the action as barbaric.

He went further to blame the present government for the suffering of Nigerians.
According to Senator Abaribe, The inability to undertake some critical thinking may have led some of us to see the term restructuring as a silver bullet that will solve all of Nigeria’s problems. Can we say that it is the structure of our polity that has made different arms of government abdicates their constitutional responsibilities?

“However, while we all accept that it is necessary to tinker with the structure of our country; we must agree that the immediate cause of our woes is injustice and inability to manage our diversity by the present government. He said.

He further said: “For example, discipline, recruitment, and promotion in the judicial arm is vested in the National Judicial Council, NJC, while another arm of government, the Executive, took it upon itself to remove the head of the judiciary against the stated procedures laid out in the constitution, thus breaching the law. Would we argue that it is the fault of the structure?

“It now seems to us that we have been put in a catch-22 situation. We seem to be going round in circles. The government says to anyone that wants restructuring – Go to the national assembly as the body empowered to amend the constitution. Those who want to restructure feel that the national assembly represents what they also want to be restructured and therefore, do not trust that the national assembly would restructure itself and the nation.”
Abaribe recalled that at a critical point in 2010, there was ‘doctrine of necessity when the nation was also at a crossroads, adding that there is need for the same national assembly to, at this critical juncture, undertake the task of restructuring the current constitutional document. He added:

“I was part of the group called Nigeria Good Governance Group in the senate. We were about 11 and we were meeting to find a way so that the lacuna on the ground than could not create more problems in the polity. The climax was when we got a budget purportedly signed by the sick president, Umaru Yar ‘Adua and we said we could not continue like that.

“All the governors came to the national assembly and resolved to apply the doctrine of necessity, which led to the amendment of the constitution that after three weeks of the absence of the president, the vice president automatically takes over.

“Today, we are in a bigger problem, including the problem of Boko Haram, Banditry, which I believe is Boko Haram that graduated to banditry, Fulani herdsmen and the problem in the South East where people go about burning police stations. So, I think the national assembly, the governors, and well-meaning Nigerians should come together and apply a doctrine of necessity 11. Since we did one during Yar ‘Adua presidency, we can do a second one to help the country. The constitutional amendment will also put the geographical zones in the constitution because it is not there now.

According to him, “One of the arguments used by those opposed to restructuring is to ask sarcastically what restructuring means. They go further to ask if it means the dismemberment of Nigeria. With all due respect, those who ask those types of questions do not mean well for Nigeria. We cannot afford to be limping along as we are doing today that is leading us to the precipice. Something must be done constitutionally and that is to amend the constitution to resolve the issues of today.
“We have to instill confidence in the polity by reflecting such things as state police. Devolution of powers and Fiscal federalism in the amendments. Essentially it means to amend parts 1 & II to move certain items from the Exclusive to the Concurrent list to give more legislative powers to the states.”
He argued that a nation that does not respect its laws simply provides the breeding ground for mutual suspicion, ethnic agitations, and insurgencies as it is currently in Nigeria.

“With the trials and tribulations that Nigeria is going through, we are tempted to ask: Where is the justice of Shehu Shagari? Where is the justice of Olusegun Obasanjo? Where is the justice of Musa Yar’ Adua. Where is the justice of Goodluck Jonathan?

“All these former Presidents were conscious of our diversity and tried very much to manage it to everyone’s benefit. Can we say that of the present administration? Your guess is as good as mine,” Abaribe stated.
