Caracta: Take 9 from 6, 10 from 9, 50 from 40, and leave six. How come?

The question requires getting SIX as answer, so am not sure but I would convert the numbers to Roman numerals(except 6 which I will leave as alphabets)
Thus 6-9= SIX - IX = S
9 -10 = IX - X = I
50 - 40 = XL - L = X

Combining the results give us SIX
