Hi
Politics / Flashback : Speech Presented By Major Gideon Orkar On April 22, 1990 by jbow: 11:24am On Apr 22, 2022
Fellow Nigerian Citizens, on behalf of the patriotic and well-meaning peoples of the Middle Belt and the southern parts of this country, I , Major Gideon Orkar, wish to happily inform you of the successful ousting of the dictatorial, corrupt, drug baronish, evil man, deceitful, homosexually-centered, prodigalistic, un-patriotic administration of General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida.

We have equally commenced their trials for unabated corruption, mismanagement of national economy, the murders of Dele Giwa, Major-General Mamman Vasta, with other officers as there was no attempted coup but mere intentions that were yet to materialise and other human rights violations.

The National Guard already in its formative stage is disbanded with immediate effect. Decrees Number 2 and 46 are hereby abrogated. We wish to emphasize that this is not just another coup but a well-conceived, planned and executed revolution for the marginalized, oppressed and enslaved peoples of the Middle Belt and the south with a view to freeing ourselves and children yet unborn from eternal slavery and colonisation by a clique of this country.

Our history is replete with numerous and uncontrollable instances of callous and insensitive dominatory repressive intrigues by those who think it is their birthright to dominate till eternity the political and economic privileges of this great country to the exclusion of the people of the Middle Belt and the south.

They have almost succeeded in subjugating the Middle Belt and making them voiceless and now extending same to the south.

It is our unflinching belief that this quest for domination, oppression and marginalisation is against the wish of God and therefore, must be resisted with the vehemence.

Anything that has a beginning must have an end. It will also suffice here to state that all Nigerians without skeleton in their cupboards need not to be afraid of this change. However, those with skeleton in their cupboards have all reasons to fear, because the time of reckoning has come.

For the avoidance of doubt, we wish to state the three primary reasons why we have decided to oust the satanic Babangida administration.

The reasons are as follows:

(1) To stop Babangida’s desire to cunningly install himself as Nigeria’s life president at all costs and by so doing, slowpoke the progress of this country for life. In order to be able to achieve this undesirable goals of his, he has evidently started destroying those groups and sections he perceived as being able to question his desires.

Examples of groups already neutralized, pitched against one another or completely destroyed are:

(a) The Sokoto caliphate by installing an unwanted Sultan to cause division within the hitherto strong Sokoto caliphate.

(b) The destruction of the peoples of Plateau State, especially the Lantang people, as a balancing force in the body politics of this country.

(c) The buying of the press by generous monetary favors and the usage of State Security Service, SSS, as a tool of terror.

(d) The intent to cow the students by the promulgation of the draconian Decree Number 47.

(e) The cowing of the university teaching and non-teaching staff by an intended massive purge, using the 150 million dollar loan as the necessitating factor.

(f) Deliberately withholding funds to the armed forces to make them ineffective and also crowning his diabolical scheme through the intended retrenchment of more than half of the members of the armed forces.

Other pointers that give credence to his desire to become a life president against the wishes of the people are:

(1) His appointment of himself as a minister of defence, his putting under his direct control the SSS, his deliberate manipulation of the transition programme, his introduction of inconceivable, unrealistic and impossible political options, his recent fraternization with other African leaders that have installed themselves as life presidents and his dogged determination to create a secret force called the national guard, independent of the armed forces and the police which will be answerable to himself alone, both operationally and administratively.

It is our strong view that this kind of dictatorial desire of Babangida is unacceptable to Nigerians of the 1990s, and, therefore, must be resisted by all.

Another major reason for the change is the need to stop intrigues, domination and internal colonization of the Nigerian state by the so-called chosen few. This, in our view, has been and is still responsible for 90 percent of the problems of Nigerians.

This indeed has been the major clog in our wheel of progress.

This clique has an unabated penchant for domination and unrivalled fostering of mediocrity and outright detest for accountability, all put together have been our undoing as a nation.

This will ever remain our threat if not checked immediately. It is strongly believed that without the intrigues perpetrated by this clique and misrule, Nigeria will have in all ways achieved developmental virtues comparable to those in Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, India, and even Japan.
READ ALSO: Igbo still marginalised in Nigeria — Gowon

Evidence, therefore, this cancerous dominance has as a factor constituted by a major and unpardonable clog in the wheel of progress of the Nigerian state. It is suffice to mention a few distasteful intrigues engineered by this group of Nigerians in recent past. These are:

(1) The shabby and dishonorable treatment meted on the longest serving Nigerian general in the person of General Domkat Bali, who in actual fact had given credibility to the Babangida administration.

(2) The wholesale hijacking of Babangida’s administration by the all-powerful clique.

(3) The disgraceful and inexplicable removal of Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe, Professor Tam David-West, Mr. Aret Adams and so on from office.

(4) The now-pervasive and on-going retrenchment of Middle Belt and southerners from public offices and their instant replacement by the favoured class and their stooges.

(5) The deliberate disruption of the educational culture and retarding its place to suit the favoured class to the detriment of other educational minded parts of this country.

(6) The deliberate impoverishment of the peoples from the Middle Belt and the south, making them working ghosts and feeding on the formulae of 0-1-1- or 0-0-0 while the aristocratic class and their stooges are living in absolute affluence on a daily basis without working for it.

(7) Other countless examples of the exploitative, oppressive, dirty games of intrigues of its class, where people and stooges that can best be described by the fact that even though they contribute very little economically to the well-being of Nigeria, they have over the years served and presided over the supposedly national wealth derived in the main from the Middle Belt and the southern part of this country, while the people from these parts of the country have been completely deprived from benefiting from the resources given to them by God.

The third reason for the change is the need to lay a strong egalitarian foundation for the real democratic take off of the Nigerian state or states as they circumstances may dictate.

In the light of all the above and in recognition of the negativeness of the aforementioned aristocratic factor, the overall progress of the Nigerian state a temporary decision to excise the following states namely, Sokoto, Borno, Katsina, Kano and Bauchi states from the Federal Republic of Nigeria comes into effect immediately until the following conditions are met.

The conditions to be met to necessitate the re-absorption of the aforementioned states are as following:

(a) To install the rightful heir to the Sultanate, Alhaji Maccido, who is the people’s choice.

(b) To send a delegation led by the real and recognized Sultan Alhaji Maccido to the federal government to vouch that the feudalistic and aristocratic quest for domination and operation will be a thing of the past and will never be practiced in any part of the Nigeria state.

By the same token, all citizens of the five states already mentioned are temporarily suspended from all public and private offices in Middle Belt and southern parts of this country until the mentioned conditions above are met.

They are also required to move back to their various states within one week from today. They will, however, be allowed to return and joint the Federal Republic of Nigeria when the stipulated conditions are met.

In the same vein, all citizens of the Middle Belt and the south are required to come back to their various states pending when the so-called all-in-all Nigerians meet the conditions that will ensure a united Nigeria. A word is enough for the wise.

This exercise will not be complete without purging corrupt public officials and recovering their ill-gotten wealth, since the days of the oil boom till date. Even in these hard times, when Nigerians are dying from hunger, trekking many miles to work for lack of transportation, a few other Nigerians with complete impunity are living in unbelievable affluence both inside and outside the country.

We are extremely determined to recover all ill-gotten wealth back to the public treasury for the use of the masses of our people. You are all advised to remain calm as there is no cause for alarm. We are fully in control of the situation as directed by God. All airports, seaports and borders are closed forthwith.

The former Armed Forces Ruling Council is now disbanded and replaced with National Ruling Council to be chaired by the head of state with other members being a civilian vice-head of state, service chiefs, inspector general of police, one representative each from NLC, NUJ, NBA, and NANS.

A curfew is hereby imposed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. until further notice. All members of the armed forces and the police forces are hereby confined to their respective barracks.

All unlawful and criminal acts by those attempting to cause chaos will be ruthlessly crushed. Be warned as we are prepared at all costs to defend the new order.

All radio stations are hereby advised to hook on permanently to the national network programme until further notice.

Long live all true patriots of this great country of ours. May God and Allah through his bountiful mercies bless us all”.https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/04/flashback-speech-presented-by-major-gideon-orkar-on-april-22-1990/

Hi
Politics / Osinbajo's Problematic Ambition - The Cable by jbow: 5:11am On Apr 19, 2022
After several months of speculations and seemingly unending denials by his spokesperson, Laolu Akande, Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo on Monday, April 11, finally declared his intention to contest for the office of the president in 2023. The months-long delay, according to very reliable sources was ostensibly due to his repeated failure to secure Buhari’s anointing as the preferred or consensus candidate despite several entreaties and lobbying. Unfortunately for him, the APC constitution does not make room for the nomination of a presidential candidate by consensus. It is either direct or indirect primary. With time running out and less than two months to the APC presidential primary, he took his destiny into his hands and declared notwithstanding. Therefore, similar to other persons who have declared interest in the office of the president come 2023, it is apposite to also interrogate the declaration of Osinbajo’s ambition. Given his position as a sitting vice president, his ambition will be interrogated from three perspectives, namely: hard facts, soft facts and leavings.

On hard facts, Osinbajo’s performance as head of the economic management team (EMT), chairman of the National Economic Council (NEC) and chairman of the board of the Debt Management Office (DMO) for the past seven years is a complete disaster. The scorecard reflects the complete failure of the man whom the 1999 constitution saddled with the responsibility of managing the Nigerian economy. The statistics are quite damning. For instance, the price of a 50kg bag of rice has increased by 200% from ₦10,000 in 2015 to ₦30,000 in 2022 while a 50kg bag of cement has increased by 150% from ₦1,800 to ₦4,500 over the same period. The price per litre of petrol, diesel and kerosene has increased by 90% from ₦87 to ₦165, by 330% from ₦151 to ₦650 and by 110% from ₦198 to ₦415 respectively between 2015 and 2022. The price of a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas has increased by 204% from ₦2,800 to ₦8,500 while a Lagos-to-Abuja flight ticket has increased by 317% from ₦12,000 to ₦50,000 over the aforementioned reference period.

The official exchange rate has depreciated by 116% from ₦192.4/$ in 2015 to ₦416.4/$ in 2022 (the parallel market is currently at ₦590/$) while inflation and unemployment rates increased by 6% from 9.3% to 15.7% and by 24% from 9.2% to 33.3% respectively between 2015 and 2022. Whereas the Nigerian economy grew by 2.65% in 2015, it contracted by -1.79% in 2022 (Nigeria’s economy nosedived into a recession twice between 2016 and 2021 under the stewardship of Osinbajo). Foreign debt has increased by 268% from $10.3bn in 2015 to $38bn in 2022 while domestic debt has increased by 123% from ₦10.1 trillion to ₦22.4 trillion over the same period thus resulting in a 214% increase in total public debt from ₦12.1 trillion in 2015 to ₦38 trillion in 2022 yet with seemingly nothing to show for it. The Excess crude account (ECA) balance declined by 98% from $2.1 billion in 2015 to a paltry $35.8 million in 2022. With this kind of performance which is F9 (total failure) by any standard in the world, why did Osinbajo declare an intention to run for president in 2023? If as the man directly in charge of the economic management of the country, you failed woefully in seven years, what can and will you do differently in 2023?

As proof of the statistics reeled out above and in pseudo-reinforcement of the same, Osinbajo’s declaration speech failed to mention a single achievement in seven years. Yes, not one single achievement was mentioned in the speech because there is no achievement to brandish. How can a man superintend over a country’s economic affairs for seven years and yet, cannot point to a single achievement? Shouldn’t what he has achieved in office be the basis for campaigning for office in 2023? To worsen matters, he said in the declaration speech that he would continue what Buhari has started. That is classic hate speech and it is extremely offensive to Nigerians! Buhari failed on security and anti-corruption while Osinbajo failed on the economy. What is there to continue or build on? In saner climes, Buhari and Osinbajo would and should be apologizing to Nigerians for their abysmal failure and not even contemplating running for president. Osinbajo becoming president in 2023 is akin to giving the ignominious duo a 3rd term in office. It must not happen! Nigeria needs a fresh start and a complete break-away from the past seven inglorious years. Besides the economy, Osinbajo lectured in UNILAG and was a member of ASUU. ASUU, his primary constituency, has been on strike for months. What has Osinbajo done as VP to resolve the issue? There is a world of difference between parading paper qualifications and execution. Oratory is cheap and the incompetence is benumbing.

On soft facts, Osinbajo has a moral burden hanging on his neck and this speaks to four issues, namely: ingratitude and betrayal, and loyalty and trust. On ingratitude and betrayal, the two positions Osinbajo has held in public office have been through Bola Tinubu’s imprimatur. Tinubu first appointed him as attorney general and commissioner for justice in Lagos (1999–2007) and sacrificed his ambition by nominating Osinbajo as running mate/VP to Buhari in December 2014 (VP from 2015 – date). Having ridden on the back of Tinubu, if Tinubu declares intention for an office, should Osinbajo indicate interest in the same office too? It is the height of ingratitude, treachery and betrayal. It shows a man who has no principles and does not appreciate favours. He is simply an ungrateful being. The speaker of the house of representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and Babatunde Fashola, minister of works, two protégés of Tinubu are equally qualified to run for the office of the president. Given that Jagaban had indicated an interest in the same office in January, they shelved their ambitions for the greater good of the south-west region. What makes Osinbajo think he is the only one qualified in the south-west to run for president? He is a bad party man. A polling unit loser with zero political structure and completely detached from the grassroots.

On loyalty and trust, while Buhari was ill and attending to his health in London, Osinbajo made some dangerous political moves including sacking Buhari’s cousin, Lawal Daura, the director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS). Osinbajo made this move and took other major steps against the backdrop and his personal wish, prayer and expectation that Buhari will not return alive. Not only did he sack Daura, he equally removed some newly appointed public office holders by Buhari and replaced them with his cronies. Examples include Alhaji Waheed Olagunju (a Yoruba Muslim) who was appointed acting MD/CEO of Bank of Industry by Buhari in 2016 but was fired by Osinbajo and swiftly replaced with Kayode Pitan, an RCCG pastor who presided over the same parish where Osinbajo presided before his assumption of office as VP. Kayode’s appointment was with immediate effect. More on Osinbajo’s RCCG bigotry later.

Osinbajo also hurriedly reconstituted the board of National Pension Commission (PenCom) by sacking Dikko Aliyu Abdulrahman as DG of Pencom and speedily replacing him with Funsho Doherty. Buhari had previously appointed Abdulrahman as DG and Funsho Doherty as chairman, both of PenCom in April 2017 but within a month (May 2017), Osinbajo undid everything. Only a dare-devil would have done what Osinbajo did. His forecast of Buhari’s making it back alive was sub-zero. He was never to be trusted with power again and hence the reason why Buhari never handed over to him again to date no matter the number of days Buhari is away on medical vacation. To complicate matters for Osinbajo, the northern establishment view his declaration for the office of the president as an affront to his benefactor and second-level betrayal. They are of the view that if this man could betray his principal (Buhari) and betray his benefactor (Tinubu), there’s nothing he cannot do to achieve his ambition and nobody is indispensable or un-expendable to him. In the eye of the north, Osinbajo will sell his soul to the devil for a pot of porridge. Therefore, such a man cannot and must not be trusted with power.

Osinbajo is not loyal to anyone but his unbridled ambition. Put simply, Osinbajo has displayed disloyalty twice. He will never be trusted again. Unfortunately for him, loyalty is the currency of politics. Once you fail the loyalty test, you are down and out. To add insult to injury, this week, Osinbajo’s campaign team released a 32-page document titled “The Plan (Abridged)” which they say he will implement to address insecurity, infrastructure, manufacturing, governance reforms and so on. The question begging for an answer is: if this man had the plan to tackle insecurity, what has he been doing for seven years? He attends FEC meetings every week and the periodic security council meetings. What does he tell them there? If he has a plan to fix security, why didn’t he share it with his boss and the security council? Did he deliberately prep Buhari’s government to fail? This is another case of disloyalty and working at cross-purposes with his principal. Why did he turn down the memo for security installation on the railway lines at one of the September 2021 FEC meetings thereby contributing to and facilitating the infamous bombing of the Abuja-Kaduna train with several human casualties? Osinbajo has been undermining this government for years and in several ways— has blood on his hands.

On leavings, despite winning and dining with politicians, public sector and private sector officials, his extensive education and international exposure, Osinbajo has unfortunately and paradoxically, remained a narrow-minded and parochial person. Osinbajo sees a Nigerian first as either an RCCG member or not. Virtually all his appointees are members of RCCG, not just RCCG members, many are pastors starting with his spokesperson, Pastor Laolu Akande. His bromance with cosmopolitan Tinubu and the Lagos political and private sector establishments over several decades was expected to have rubbed off positively on him so that he is more broadminded, accommodating and religiously tolerant. Unfortunately for Osinabjo, the more he rolled with the elites, the further steeped in religious bigotry and Christian fundamentalism he became. Given his professorship, SANship, private sector and public sector experience, Osinbajo has shown that you can take a pig out of the gutter but you cannot take the gutter out of the pig. His professorship and years of lecturing in UNILAG are a complete waste of expensive education.

The story of Osinbajo filling the social intervention programme (SIP) offices with members of RCCG and ensuring that members of RCCG benefited enormously to the exclusion of Muslims and other non-RCCG Christians is the stuff of legend. The story of how huge funds were grossly mismanaged and embezzled by members of RCCG in the SIP office is one of the reasons why President Buhari removed the SIP office from the VP’s purview gave it to the newly created ministry of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development superintended by Sadiya Umar Farouq while over 30 officers (overwhelmingly RCCG members) in the SIP office were sacked by the presidency. Several of them were investigated and found to have bought properties in the United States with funds misappropriated from the SIP budget. The quiet easing out and the decision not to prosecute the culprits was to save the VP from public embarrassment.

If Osinbajo sees a Nigerian first as either an RCCG-member or not, why does he want to become the president of a multi-religious Nigeria with a Muslim-majority population? There are non-RCCG Christians, Muslims and atheists in the country. Adeboye is 80 years old and close to the departure lounge. Osinbajo should rather declare an intention to replace Adeboye when the octogenarian retires or passes on. That would be a better and more fitting declaration and calling than wanting to be president of 200 million Nigerians. A presidential ambition based on phantom spiritual prophecy is an anaesthetized presidential dream which can only be actualised with the change of guard at the GO-level at the RCCG camp on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, not at Aso Villa where a broadminded, religiously liberal, inclusive and accommodating bridge-builder and unifier is required.

In conclusion, given the above, Osinbajo should be apologising to Nigerians for the failure of the current administration. Nigerians are worse off in 2022 compared to 2015 when Buhari and Osinbajo assumed office. Nigeria must not be afflicted twice with a backdoor 3rd term for the current Buhari-Osinbajo administration which has failed on all socio-economic parameters, measures and indices. It is an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians that Osinbajo even intends to contest for the office of the president in 2023. What an affront!

Politics / 2023 Presidency : Party Tinubu May Join Revealed Amid Doubts Over APC Ticket by jbow: 3:34am On Mar 20, 2022
All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader, Bola Tinubu is “working on an alternative party” to vie for the 2023 presidency.

DAILY POST was informed that his camp is not putting all eggs in one basket to avoid being caught unawares by an “unfavourable outcome” of the APC primary.

President Muhammadu Buhari is said to be considering “a younger person” as a successor.

In January, he refused to name his preference, saying the person may be killed.

At the weekend, insiders in Ekiti claimed Tinubu plans to test the waters with the governorship election that will be held on June 18, 2022.

The ambition of the ex-Lagos Governor “does not have the full backing” of Governor Kayode Fayemi, who himself is reportedly interested in the presidency.

Tinubu, well aware of this, is “tactically aligning” with Segun Oni, a one-time Ekiti Governor and Social Democratic Party (SDP) flagbearer.

Fayemi’s ally, Biodun Oyebanji, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), won the APC ticket after defeating Ojo Kayode, Opeyemi Bamidele and Dayo Adeyeye.

The calculation is that with 54-year-old Oyebanji as Governor, the state government and party chapter may not commit to working for Tinubu’s emergence as President.

The Jagaban of Borgu is disposed to stopping Fayemi from installing a next-in-line not only for refusing to support his bid but daring to join the presidential race.

“The President wants a younger person and that’s not Tinubu. Fayemi wants to be President if the office is zoned to the South”, a source said.

“If he fails, he may get the SGF (Secretary to the Government of the Federation) position as long as the next President or Vice are not from South-West.

“Tinubu is monitoring all that’s happening and he seems to have pitched his tent with the SDP. The truth is that civil servants like Oni are ready to vote for him.

“With his cold war with Fayemi and Oni’s popularity, Tinubu has developed a soft spot for the SDP. And this isn’t just about Ekiti election, he may contest on the platform if APC denies him a ticket.”

DAILY POST gathered that Oni’s running mate, Otunba Ladi Owolabi was picked after consultations with Tinubu’s camp. Oni, 67, is from Ifaki while Owolabi, 68, is an Ado Ekiti indigene.

During Tinubu’s visit to Ekiti monarchs a fortnight ago, the state government allegedly frustrated the use of the Adetiloye Hall.

“The authorities stopped the use of the venue because Fayemi isn’t working for his political leader’s ambition. In fact, by the time Tinubu landed, Fayemi left the state via helicopter.

“They said he had to be in Abuja. He could have briefly showed up at the parley with the Obas but didn’t want to be seen with Tinubu in such a gathering”, another source hinted.

The Onisan of Isan Ekiti, Oba Gabriel Ayodele Adejuwon is Chairman of the Council of Traditional Rulers. Fayemi hails from Isan.

The meeting was eventually held at the palace of the Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Oba Adeyemo Adejugbe, where Tinubu decried “hopelessness, hunger and lack of development” in the land.

“We can not just be talking of airport alone in Ekiti, we should boast of good roads and better education system and better future for our children.

“We are here to answer the call of our forefathers to build a nation that will be united, prosperous and happily developed. I need your prayers to achieve this mandate.

“We are here to renew the hope of Nigeria and make the country better for our children. I have been on the issue of Nigeria since 70s. (MKO) Abiola was brought out by us, we fought for democracy”, he stated.

The late Abiola, a business mogul and philanthropist, won the 1993 presidential election. He contested on the platform of the SDP.https://dailypost.ng/2022/03/19/2023-presidency-party-tinubu-may-join-revealed-amid-doubts-over-apc-ticket/

Politics / 2023: Yoruba Obas Are Wrong To Unite Too Hastily Behind Tinubu - Vanguard by jbow: 6:54am On Mar 17, 2022
SHORTLY after Bola Tinubu, former Lagos State governor, told President Muhammadu Buhari about his presidential ambition on January 10, he embarked on barnstorming visits to the palaces of Yoruba Obas.

His aim? To secure their blessings and endorsements for his ambition to become Nigeria’s president in 2023. The royal fathers unreservedly blessed Tinubu’s ambition and showered him with gushing endorsements.

The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, told Tinubu that Yoruba ancestors “will make you president”. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, invoked the spirits of his forefathers to “lead the battle and guarantee the success of the (Tinubu presidency) project”. The new Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Lekan Salami, said: “Tinubu should be assured that the people of Ibadan are fully behind him.” The list of royal endorsements goes on.

Surely, the logical conclusion is that no other presidential aspirant, from whatever party, will receive the support of the leading traditional rulers in Yorubaland. After all, the Obas wouldn’t ask their ancestors to support two presidential aspirants simultaneously, or would they?

So, except out of courtesy and respect for the traditional institution, it’s pointless for any other presidential aspirant to visit the leading Yoruba traditional rulers. Put simply, the Obas have settled for Tinubu.

The Alaafin of Oyo gave the ancestral order. “All the ancestors in Yorubaland, get up and assist your son,” he said concerning Tinubu’s ambition! But here’s the rub. While, as fathers to all, traditional rulers should receive and pray for all presidential aspirants who come to them, it’s beyond the pale to endorse one aspirant openly and fulsomely as Nigeria’s next president. Truth is, like oil and water, partisan politics and the traditional institution don’t mix. Nothing undermines, indeed damages, the traditional institution more than when it’s politicised and hijacked by politicians.

So, why would Tinubu drag Yoruba Obas into such barefaced partisanship? Self-interest, of course! At the palace of the Ooni of Ife, Tinubu said: “It is our belief that once Ooni, Orangun, Awujale, Alake, Owa, among others, speak, it (the presidency) becomes ours.”

But before the presidency, Tinubu must first secure his party’s presidential ticket, and corralling Yoruba Obas behind his ambition, so early, is aimed at his party’s presidential primaries. He wants to signal to his party and his potential rivals in South-West APC that the South-West is solidly behind him, that he has the support of most Yoruba Obas all sewn up.

Here goes the reasoning: APC must give him itspresidential ticket or lose the South-West in 2023; and his rivals must not run against him, or they will lose badly. Yet, both tactics won’t work because APC and Tinubu’s Yoruba rivals in the party won’t succumb to such blackmail. But the tactics fit into an overarching strategy. Ignore the Olympian hyperbole about Tinubu’s abilities, his strategy for becoming president in 2023 is mainly based on a strong sense of entitlement and an opportunistic ethnic championship.

The first theory was propounded at the Ooni of Ife’s palace when Tinubu said that he helped make Buhari president in 2015 and 2019, so Buhari is obligated to help him become president in 2023. The second was proffered at the Alaafin of Oyo’s palace when Tinubu listed the positions occupied by Yorubas in the current government, including vice-president, and then said: “But we still need more”.Thus, he presents his ambition as an ethnic agenda for Yoruba presidency, an utter insensitivity to the Igbo, who have better claims.

To be sure, Tinubu can’t win in the South-East and the South-South and doesn’t pretend he wants to run a pan-Nigeria campaign. His entire strategy is based on replicating the sectional North/South-West alliance that produced victories for APC in 2015 and 2019.

Recently, Tanko Yakasai, a chieftain of Arewa Consultative Forum and Tinubu ally, set out the”winning” formula. In one interview, he said: “With the South-West, all Tinubu needs is for him to get about 45 to 50 per cent of the Northern votes to win the presidency”. Presumably working on the Yakasai formula, Adeseye Ogunlewe, former minister and Tinubu acolyte, said on Arise TV that Tinubu’s support was solid on the ground in the South-West, but Yoruba Obas should go to the North and “sell Tinubu to Northern emirs.”

Which raises the question why Yoruba traditional rulers are willing tool in the Tinubu game. Even if they support his ambition, why can’t they wait until the APC presidential primary process plays itself out? By publicly endorsing Tinubu before his party’s presidential primaries, they are interfering in the internal democracy of a political party. Why?

Recently, an Osun State APC senator said: “The only presidential aspirant known to the political family of the APC in the South-West is Tinubu.” That makes South-West APC a medieval party consisting of a feudal lord and serfs. But do the Obas believe the senator?

Or do they agree with those attempting to intimidate Vice President Yemi Osinbajo out of running for president by mouthing the utter baloney that because Tinubu nominated him as Buhari’s running mate in 2015, Osinbajo would be morally wrong to run against Tinubu. I addressed this issue in a previous column, so won’t rehash the arguments here.

But truth be told: Yoruba Obas have shown utter disregard for Professor Osinbajo. As vice president, he’s the highest-ranking Yoruba holding public office today, and respected worldwide for his intellect, competence and integrity. As an active vice president,Osinbajo has a job to do and can’t prematurely declare a presidential ambition and make high-profile political visits to palaces. But it’s inconceivable that he wouldn’t want to run for president.

This week, Daily Trust reported that Osinbajo has told Buhari he wants to run for president and may soon publicly declare his ambition. Having asked their ancestors to make Tinubu president, what would Yoruba Obas say about Osinbajo? Little. Well, they’re wrong. Osinbajo should seek the endorsement of the God of gods and the King of kings!

Politics / Don't Bill Me, Petrol Is Expensive In Germany Too - Actress Olaide Oyedeji by jbow: 5:25am On Mar 12, 2022
Actress, Olaide Oyedeji, has urged her fans to reconsider ‘billing’ her because of the price of fuel in Nigeria.
In a video shot at a fuel station in Germany, the actress said that she now pays over two Euros per litre of fuel. A price, she said was more than she used to pay for the product in the past.
Oyedeji said, “I’m not saying what is happening right now in Nigeria on the matter is fuel is acceptable. I’m just trying to explain something to you people. What is happening in Lagos is also happening here (Germany). Don’t tell me that because petrol is now expensive in Lagos, you want to turn me into a ‘client’ and start billing me, it will not work.”

Politics / Tinubu Identifies Two Key Attributes Of Obasanjo. by jbow: 12:01pm On Mar 06, 2022
A former Governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Tinubu has identified two key attributes of former President Olusegun Obasanjo as he clocks 85.

He said that Obasanjo is bold and courageous, adding that he will continue to be so, for that is the essence of his character.

Tinubu, in a congratulatory message by his Media Aide, Mr Tunde Rahman, on Saturday in Lagos, praised Obasanjo for his patriotism and commitment to the unity of the country.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart said that “the former president had remained strong, agile and committed to the greatness of our dear nation.”

He explained that although there had been instances where he had disagreed with Obasanjo on important substantive issues, the former president had made numerous useful contributions to the country.

“Our debates have been spirited, yet always professional and without personal animus.

“Through it all, I have come to respect his love for the country and legendary work ethics.

“President Obasanjo has worked tirelessly for Nigeria, Africa and indeed the black race and has earned his stripes as an important statesman on the world stage.

“Baba Obasanjo is bold and courageous and will continue to be so, for that is the essence of his character,” he said.

Tinubu prayed to God Almighty to keep Obasanjo for many more years and that God grants him good health and ceaseless energy to continue to be of service to the country he loves so dearly.https://dailypost.ng/2022/03/06/tinubu-identifies-two-key-attributes-of-obasanjo/

Politics / Fuel Scarcity: Heaven Won't Fall, Nigerians Will Survive - Femi Adesina by jbow: 7:41am On Mar 04, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Femi Adesina has said Nigerians would survive the current fuel scarcity.

Adesina said heavens would not fall over the current fuel scarcity and Nigerians will survive like always.

He stated this in his latest weekly article on Thursday titled “KNOCK, KNOCK. WHO’S THERE?”

The presidential aide recalled that Nigerians had experienced a similar situation in the past and they survived.

Adesina’s article reads partly: “It’s obviously not the easiest of times in our country currently, what with severe fuel scarcity exacerbating the other existential challenges we have been coping with.

“In some areas, there’s no fuel, no electricity, thus translating to a severe energy crisis

“There were cases of bad fuel before in this country. We slept for days, weeks on end at petrol stations, queuing for fuel. We survived. We will survive again. Las las.”

Nigerians have been battling with fuel scarcity since February.

The scarcity is said to have been caused by the importation of adulterated fuel.

However, the Federal Government had assured Nigerians that normalcy would soon return because it has enough

Politics / Fuel : Don't Sell Above #230 Per Litre, Bayelsa Govt Urges by jbow: 1:59pm On Feb 25, 2022
As fuel scarcity lingers nationwide, the Bayelsa State government has directed all fuel stations in the state not to sell petrol above N230 per litre, as against the national price of N165 per litre.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the deputy governor, Mr Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, also directed that no consumer should get more than 25 litres in a jerrycan. This he said during the inauguration of a monitoring team on the pricing and distribution of petroleum products in the state.

The directives, he said, would be in force until normalcy returned to petroleum products distribution and supply, NAN reported.

Ewhrudjakpo noted that Bayelsa had the least allocation of petrol from the NNPC but assured that government was taking every necessary step to end the scarcity as soon as possible.

Speaking on fuel subsidy paid by the state, Ewhrudjakpo stated that making Bayelsa to pay the same amount as states with higher allocation of petrol amounted to robbing Peter to pay Paul.

According to NAN, Ewhrudjakpo appealed to the Federal Government to end the perceived injustice in fuel subsidy payment by ensuring that each state paid based on the number of trucks allocated to it every month.

He further hinted that Bayelsa would look at the possibility of having a fuel depot, as having none affected fuel supply in the state.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Bayelsa State Petroleum Taskforce, Mr Richman Samuel, said, through effective negotiation, petrol price was brought down from N300 per litre to N230 per litre in the state.
He urged marketers not to sell above the negotiated price.

Samuel said that the taskforce had been working in collaboration with other relevant stakeholders to ensure that the situation was brought under control.

Reacting to the statement, the Chairman of Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Mr Dukumor Taremi-West, assured that marketers would not take undue advantage of consumers, according to NAN.

NAN reported that the Operations Controller of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Bayelsa Field Office, Mr Ogbe Nicholas, had earlier assured the public that there was enough petrol around the corner, as his office had already placed an order for ten trucks of petrol from the Warri and Port Harcourt depots.

Ogbe also noted that the absence of a depot in the state adversely affected fuel supply and left the state at the mercy of oil marketers https://punchng.com/fuel-dont-sell-above-n230-per-litre-bayelsa-govt-urges/

Politics / Buhari: Nigeria Now Self-Sufficient In Cement Production by jbow: 6:09pm On Jan 27, 2022
President Muhammadu Buhari has boasted that Nigeria was now self-sufficient in cement production, such that it has also risen to become a net exporter of the product to other neighbouring countries.

Buhari also said this wouldn’t have been feasible if his administration was not churning out economic diversification policies that enable entrepreneurs harness resources that are abundant in the country.

He made these remarks in Sokoto on Thursday, while inaugurating a new 3 million metric tonnes per annum BUA Cement Sokoto Line 4 factory.

The President said he was pleased to identify with the success stories and investments that create employment opportunities for citizens.

”I always remind Nigerians that every region, indeed every State, in Nigeria sits on huge reserves of resources. For example, in this area, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara can boast of rice production, gold and other precious metals development and of course, heavy industries like cement manufacturing.

”As a Government, we introduced policies and mechanisms to support such investments in a legal, ethical and inclusive manner,” the President stated.

While giving thumbs up to his administration, Buhari went down memory lane, saying the constitution of the National Food Security Council on Food Security Matters has also led to rice sufficiency in the country, including other staple foods.

DAILY POST recalls that Buhari recently launched a rice pyramid in Abuja, as an affirmation of Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in rice production.

Speaking further, the President noted that the Presidential Artisanal Gold Mining Development Initiative has helped in no small means to regulate the local artisanal gold mining business, including health and safety implications for mining workers.

His words, “We remain prepared to support serious investors to set up businesses that will take advantage of these opportunities through value addition to take advantage of the huge market here, as well as in the greater African region and the world at large.”

He also seized the commissioning ceremony to reassure Nigerians that more investments were underway in terms of road and rail construction to ease movement of people, goods and services, including facilitating trade while lowering logistics costs associated with the inefficiencies of bad roads and bridges.

Politics / 2023 Elections : Cabal Within APC Ploting Against Me : Fayemi by jbow: 10:59am On Jan 08, 2022
Some political interests within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are plotting to defame Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi over 2023 elections.

The Ekiti state government raised the alarm in a statement by the governor’s chief press secretary, Yinka Oyebode, on Thursday.

He said some persons within APC are uncomfortable with Fayemi’s “rising profile” and are looking for ways to de-market him as the 2023 presidential election draws near.

He said the plan is to discredit Fayemi and make him unacceptable to the public.

THe statement reads: “The general public is hereby alerted of a fresh plot by some political interests to activate a spate of negative media campaigns against the person of Dr Kayode Fayemi, Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF),” Oyebode said.

“The plot, as uncovered, is to use some faceless political groups and political jobbers from different parts of the country to defame the Ekiti State Governor.

“Specifically, the plan is to use the faceless groups to discredit Governor Fayemi and portray him as unacceptable to the generality of the people across the six geo-political zones of the country. This plot is part of their game plan for the 2023 presidential contest.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Dr Fayemi has not told anyone that he is in the race for the Presidency of Nigeria. He has always maintained that he is on duty in Ekiti and would like to concentrate on that assignment. What he does afterwards is in the hands of God and he will cross that bridge at the appropriate time. He restated this position during his most recent interview with Arise TV on January 1, 2022.

“Some entrenched interests within the ruling All Progressives Congress, however, seem uncomfortable with the rising profile of the NGF Chairman and have resorted to cheap blackmail aimed at de-marketing him.

“We urge members of the public to disregard the potpourri of lies and cheap blackmail that could be released in the coming days, while the promoters of this smear campaign are advised to concentrate on marketing their aspiration to the good people of Nigeria without recourse to defamation or character assassination of perceived competitors.

“The Nigerian Constitution states clearly the qualifications for the position of the President of the country. Every qualified adult has the right to aspire to the number one position. Therefore, we do not believe it is proper, decent or strategic for any aspirant to think his campaign can only gather momentum when he destroys the reputation of a fellow citizen who is perceived as a possible opponent.”
