Health / Signs And Symptoms Of Breast Cancer by Jcan: 4:51pm On Apr 03, 2016
This is a cancer that develops from breast tissue, and it's one of the most common cancers affecting females. Most women who get it are over 40 years old, this is a ration of 8 to 10. Younger women and men also get this cancer in rare case. If it's treated early enough, breast cancer is curable and can be prevented from spreading to other parts of the body.
In this article, I will feature on breast cancer in women.
October
The month of October is worldwide Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It's dedicated to raise consciousness about the thousands of women who are diagnosed with the disease every year. The pink ribbon and the colour pink in general, is an international symbol for breast cancer month. Pink is considered feminine and the roles that come with this gender like being beautiful, caring, good and being cooperative.
Signs and Symptoms to look out for:
Lump in the breast.

Fluid coming from the nipple.

Dimpling of the skin around the breast.

A change in breast shape.

A red scaly patch of skin.

Swollen lymph nodes, around the breast.

Shortness of breath.
Causes
No one knows the exact cause of this cancer. Medics rarely know why some women develop it while others don't. Most women who have this cancer will never be able to tell the exact cause. One thing for sure this cancer is always caused by damage to a cell's DNA.
Risks factors
Some of these risks can be changed and for some we can do little about as we have absolutely no control over them.
A female whose female relatives have had breast cancer is two to three times more likely to develop the disease. This is because the disease is hereditary.

Advancing in age. As we saw earlier the big percentage of cancer patients lies from 40 years of age onwards.

Lack of childbearing or lack of breastfeeding.

Great exposure to estrogen hormone. Estrogen makes cells to divide, the more the cells divide, they become abnormal, thus becoming cancerous. Estrogen exposure is greatly affected by the age a lady starts and stops menstruating, the average length of her menstrual cycle, and her age at first childbirth. Her risk for this cancer is increased if she starts menstruating before age 12, has her first child after age 30, or stops menstruating after age the age of 50 years and above. Also, if she has her menstrual cycle shorter or longer than the average 24-28 days.

Radiation exposure. If you get radiation treatments to your chest as a child or young adult, your risk of the disease is increased.

Diet. Research has shown that women with high fat intake diets are more prone to getting the disease.

Lack of physical activity.

The ladies that smoke and drink alcohol increase the risk of developing this cancer.

Chances of getting breast cancer are increased if you've had breast cancer in one breast before.
Diagnosis
Do self-examination of the breast always to check for the above symptoms. If you see anything suspicious see your doctor immediately.

Do mammography tests every two years for early detection.
Although screening for breast cancer cannot prevent you from getting breast cancer, it can help find it early when it is easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about which screening tests are right for you, and when you should have them.

Family / Help Your Children Resist Peer Pressure by Jcan: 3:46pm On Apr 01, 2016
Peer pressure is the influence that is either negative or positive that is usually installed to a person so that they can fit in with their peers. A person might be forced to acquire certain values choices or even decisions so that they fit in. Parents might feel powerless in some circumstances, but they are actually the best people to help their teens to resist troublesome peers. Here is some guidance to help your kids if they are under peer pressure;
· Intervene with love: A times a child might flatter either in decision-making or by being assertive, it's usually the parents work to step in. It's a parent's work to instill some value which helps the child to make the right decision when they are in a difficult situation. Parents should take stiffer measure in instances where the person is engaging in negative behaviors regularly. A crisis should be avoided if the parent intervenes early enough by making their children feel valued and loved unconditionally. This can give them the ability to beat peer pressure easily.
· Appreciate positive peers: A friend can set an example which will be a turning point to a troubled teen. A child might get tired hearing a No from the parent but the same advice by a teen results into a great impact, and so through this a parent can turn to youth leaders so that they can counsel their peers against making bad choices and avoiding reckless behaviors.
· Face the fears: Explain to your child how you were able to withstand peer pressure, this will teach them an invaluable lesson. Help them face their fears for when they are about to get ridiculed or lose a friend. Explain to them how it's difficult to go against some practices everyone else is doing, but how standing out can help in developing confidence, courage, and maturity.
· Have some practical sessions: Practicing for difficult sessions can help not only in building a child's confidence and skills. This also helps a child to assertive and not being aggressive. An important lesson of saying no is usually taught and that way a peer will understand them and their reasons and not rejecting them. With practices, they find different tactics like leaving a scene or threatening to tell the authority for when of a difficult situation.
· Promote self-respect: Encourage your child to develop their talents and interests this will make them less vulnerable. Help them build their self-esteem by encouraging them to develop a hobby, do social work or a part-time job. These activities help in discouraging boredom and also introduces them to peers of the same interests. Always ask their opinions, consider what he does say or believe.
· Have an open honest relationship: To know about your child's concerns one should always be a good listener. Invite open discussions about important issues and always show them that you care. It will make them have confidence and also make right decisions

Jobs/Vacancies / Al Jazeera Network To Cut 500 Jobs by Jcan: 4:56pm On Mar 27, 2016
The Qatar-based Al Jazeera media network has announced that it is cutting 500 jobs.
It said the job reduction would affect posts worldwide but most of the losses would be in Qatar.
Acting director general Mostefa Souag said the decision was "difficult" but the group was "confident it is the right step".
Al Jazeera, funded by the Qatari government, was founded in 1996 and has more than 70 bureaux worldwide.
A statement from Al Jazeera described the latest move as "a workforce optimisation initiative" in response to "the ongoing transformation of the media landscape".
Mr Souag said: "While our decision is consistent with those being made across the media industry worldwide, it was difficult to make nonetheless.
"However, we are confident it is the right step to ensure the Network's long-term competitiveness and reach."
Al Jazeera America announced earlier this year it would shut its cable news channel despite spending heavily to break into the US market.
CEO Al Anstey said the business model was "simply not sustainable in light of the economic challenges".
It spent millions of dollars hiring top US journalists but struggled to bring viewers to its news programmes.

Health / Why It's Crucial To Know Family Health History by Jcan: 10:09pm On Mar 26, 2016
What is a Family Medical History?

The family medical history paperwork is basically a record of health information concerning the new patient or a family member who is entering a new family practice. It is a complete record from three generations to include parents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, grandparents, cousins, brothers and sisters as well as children.
The reason it is so important is because families have many health issues in common. Their environment, genes, and lifestyle are typically much alike. Relaying any conditions or disorders may help a family practice determine risk factors for the individual, other members of the family and even future generations. They'll use this paperwork to look for patterns and see if anyone is at risk when it comes to developing particular conditions.

Sports / Lionel Messi: History Of A Legend. by Jcan: 4:53pm On Mar 18, 2016
[img]

Early Life

Lionel Andres Messi, was born on 25 June, 1987, in Rosaria, Santa Fe Province, to parents Jorge Horacio Messi, a factory steel worker, and Celia Maria Cuccittini, a part-time cleaner. His parental family originates from the Italian city of Ancona, from where his ancestry, Angelo Messi, emigrated to Argentina in 1883. He has two older brothers, Rodrigo and Matias, and a sister, Maria Sol.
Messi started playing football for Grandoli, a local club coached by his father. In 1995, Messi switched to Newell's Old Boys who were based in his home city Rosario. He became part of a local youth powerhouse that lost only one match in the next four years and became locally known as "The Machine of '87", from the year of their birth.
At the age of 11, Messi was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. Local team River Plate showed interest in his progress, but were not willing to pay for treatment for his condition, which cost $900 a month. Carles Rexach, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, was made aware of his talent as Messi had relatives in Lleida in western Catalonia, and Messi and his father were able to arrange a trial with the team. Rexach, with no paper at hand, offered Messi a contract written on a paper napkin. Barcelona offered to pay his medical bills on the condition that he moved to Spain. Messi and his father duly moved to Barcelona, where Messi enrolled in the club's youth academy.

Achievements

By the age of 21, Messi had received Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations. The following year, in 2009, was his first time winning both awards. He followed this up by winning the inaugural FIFA Ballon d'Or in 2010, and again in 2011 and 2012. He also won the 2010-11 UEFA Best Player in Europe award.
At the age of 24, Messi became Barcelona's all-time top scorer in all official club competitions. At 25, he became the youngest player to score 200 goals in La Liga. In September 2014, Messi scored his 400th senior career goal for the club and country at just age 27.

Sports / The History Of Football Boots. by Jcan: 1:37pm On Mar 16, 2016
Like everything in this world, football boots also underwent a huge change over time. According to records, such boots were first introduced in 1526 by King Henry VIII. Cornelius Johnson, the personal shoemaker of the king, made a pair of boots for him and it cost 4 shillings. The royal boots were made of strong and high quality leather. The ankle high boots were heavier than the normal shoes of that time. Let us now take a look at evolution of football boots over time.

Earlier Period

We will now move forward 300 years to find out how the boots looked like in the 18th century. The game started gaining tremendous popularity throughout the UK. However, the game did not emerge as a serious profession and was considered something for recreation. Players used to wear leather-made and hard boots. Those boots had long laces and steel toe caps. Those also had metal spikes as such design helps increase ground stability and grip.

Following the introduction of rules and regulations in the late 18th century, slipper style shoes were introduced for the players. Studs were allowed but those were round in shape. The leather studs were also called cleats and used to be hammered into the boots earlier. Those boots had a weight of 500 gm. The boots were up to the ankles to increase protection for the footballers. They had six studs on the sole.

Evolution between 1940s and 1960s

We will now try to understand the revolution in the design of football boots during the era. Its design underwent remarkable changes after the World War II due to cheap air travel and more international matches. The South American players started using flexible boots that got increasingly popular among others. The football boot manufacturing companies shifted their attention to production of lighter boots as those helped the players improve their skill of ball control and kicking. These boots were more than just protective footwear..

Variations in 1970s

Technological developments during sixties made a significant change in boot design that saw introduction of lower cut in the football history. This design helped the players to pick up high speed. Football king Pele started wearing famous Puma boots in 1962. However, Adidas became the leader in the industry manufacturing football accessories. Majority of the players wore Adidas football boots during the FIFA World Cup in 1966.

Changes in 1990's

Adidas came up with revolutionary design during this period by introducing Predator that made a fine blend of technology and styling. The design earned immediate and worldwide success. Polymer extrusion technology added more flexibility to the sole whereas a bladed structure covering the entire sole replaced conventional studs. Those changes ensured more stability in the boots.

Advanced Look in 2000's

With continuous development in technology, the football boot manufactures started shelving off more advanced designs. It led to fierce competitions among the three big brands namely Nike, Puma and Adidas. The modern-day boots are designed to give the footballers enhanced protection while helping them feel relaxed during the games.
