Timmylehyn:the leaves getting dried is normal especially the first ones but in a situation where all leaves are drying is always either the plants lacks water or some nutrients or there's too much sunlight on them this can corrected by mulching or constructing ridges 1 Like |

in developed countries where government aids farmers watermelon yields as high as 10 thousand to 12 thousand balls per acre cause farmers are always provided with all it takes to grow watermelon successfully but in nigeria where every man is for himself/herself don't expect this yield as a practical farmer I always plant 3500 to 4500 seeds per acre and I always harvest not less than 2000 to 2500 balls per acre at times it's more than that figure but let's keep it at 2500 balls we all know the prices of watermelon in the market it ranges from 500naira downward depending on the size and season but let's keep it at 150naira for each ball now if you multiply 2500*150=375000 within 65 to 75 days in my next update I will be listing and analyzing the costs of planting watermelon on an acre of land 13 Likes 1 Share |

when you feed your watermelon with the right fertilizers at the right time it will produce bigger balls than smaller balls and this will maximize your profits cause the bigger the ball the higher the price with pruning bigger balls can be achieved though it's painful and back breaking pruning simply means the cutting away of smaller balls and leaving the bigger balls 7 Likes 2 Shares |

weeding in watermelon is done 2 weeks after planting and four weeks after planting respectively if you are not using pre-emergence herbicide make sure you weed at the appropriate time cause failure to do so will lead to competition for nutrients and photosynthesis between the weeds and your melon and resulting in poor yields 5 Likes 2 Shares |

watermelon is planted ten feet apart from each other it requires a lot of space this is because planting too close discourages bigger balls and encourages Downy mildew always put 3 seeds per hole so that even if insects or wild animals destroy some of the seeds some will remain 9 Likes 1 Share |

another thing commonly found in watermelon farms is yellow leaves in this case I normally apply humus plus and if you're depending on rain and there's drought the best way to reduce damage is by applying super gro at least after every four days during the drought period to keep the plants moisture and retain water failure to do so will lead to poor harvest and if the drought occurs during the fruiting stage it can make the fruits to crack when rain resumes 10 Likes 2 Shares |

it happened last year on two different occasions the shock I received from the incident made me think of committing suicide I invested as much as 600k in ground nut, watermelon, maize, and cassava on 8 hectares of land the Fulani herdsmen were coming in the night to destroy farms they had no wives so they lived ruthlessly during the day time when ever we met they'll ask me if there's anything for them to eat at times I will give them some roasted yams after all we understand the same language, hausa one day on Sunday I went to the farm only to see that all my ground nut and maize was eaten up by cattle I was surprised cause I use to work from 6 am to 6pm sometimes I will go for break for 2-3 hours and it was always during my break period that cattle will come and eat up some parts of the farm so I decided to hide with my pregnant wife and see who was controlling the cattle to my greatest surprise it was the same guy that I usually give roasted yams and water that was behind this damage so I and my wife came out of our hiding place and approached him I asked him why he was paying me evil for good his response was that "I should ask my father and mother" I said ok since my father is dead and my mom was not around were going to ask each other upon hearing this he brought out his sharp matchet from it's sheath and was coming towards me I felt like running but I knew that if I just turned my back on him he will cut my arm very easy so I made up my mind to fight him we engaged in a serious fight that lasted for over 3hours and his matchet fell from his grip my wife came to hold me cause I threw him to the ground and I was sitting on him upon seeing my wife i don't know how this guy managed to kick my pregnant wife on the stomach when I I saw his determination to harm me by all means I told my wife to get me a rope but she was rolling and crying in pains so I removed my shirt and tie him up by then it was dark so I handed him to the local vigilante I told them to hand him to the police the next day before I could get to the vigilante office they have already collected 5k from the boy and freed him without compensating me I reported the issue to the police they demanded 10k from me that they were going to make sure I got justice but nothing was done all these happened in yagba east local government in kogi state the police station is located in ifelukotun in yagba east local government in kogi the name of the dpo in the station is Dsp mariam allero when I saw that nothing was done I reported the issue to the police public relations officer of the whole kogi state mr A.y.a but nothing was done I was not compensated and the fulani guy upon his release he organized his colleagues they came back and finished the remaining crops on my farm and as if that wasn't enough they were looking for me to kill me they set my house on fire and I was not left with any choice than to abandon my farm and run for my life right now as I'm typing this there's no single farmer in the rural areas in yagba east local government in kogi state they've been chased by fulani herdsmen and all there crops have been destroyed I pray the governor of kogi state do something about this cause people are starving in that area from kponyan to isanlu 5 Likes |

the most common disease of watermelon is downy mildew it's caused by excessive water on the leaves of the plant or too much cold this always results in the leaves squeezing and turning yellow and less growth the solution to this is application of imi force mixed up with best insecticide or any other insecticide measurement should not exceed 30 ml per knapsack sprayer 16 Likes 2 Shares |
Agriculture / Re: All Crops Grown In The North Can Be Grown In The South by JeAgro477(m): 9:29pm On Mar 15, 2021 |
kkins25:yes the yield was far more better than that of the north both in size and number but it was not as sweet as the one I do grow in the north as of ground nut I've never seen a place where twenty five bags of ground nut was harvested from just an acre of land apart from ekiti I was shocked and one funny thing was that the farmers that grow these groundnut were so primitive that they don't believe in fertilizer application and other GAP methods 3 Likes 2 Shares |

there's also need for fertilizer application 2weeks after planting during this period Is either one uses poultry dung or npk 20-10+10 apply 15cm away from the base of the plant applying too close to the plant can harm the plant and burn it down at 4 we 11 Likes 1 Share |

one thing that most people don't know about watermelon is that once it germinates after 6 days of planting there's need for protection against insects and fungi so you're to apply pesticides every week and fungicides when you notice fungi attack else you won't harvest even one ball 30 Likes 5 Shares |

the best time to plant watermelon and achieve a bumper harvest with less stress is dry seasons using drip irrigation although timely planting can give one good yield using rain but it is not the best way cause it is either it gets less water or too much water at the wrong times as rain doesn't fall at the times we want there are times that watermelon needs less water which is during the early stages but it requires much water during the flowering and fruiting stages 30 Likes 5 Shares |
