The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State yesterday warned Governor Rotimi Amaechi to stop insulting President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience. The party accused Amaechi of resorting to cheap blackmail and mischief in his fight with the first couple. Chairman of the PDP in the state, Chief Felix Obuah, labelled the governor’s action as irresponsible and vowed that further insults on the president and his wife will no longer be tolerated. Obuah was reacting to the statement by the governor in Abuja last Friday to the effect that Dame Patience influenced the posting of the Rivers Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, in February, from the Oyo State Command. The NGF chairman also insisted that Mbu must be redeployed for taking sides in the Rivers political crisis and behaving like a politician, while declaring that the national dialogue initiated by President Jonathan was a waste of time. Obuah said the party has had enough of Amaechi’s penchant for insulting and dragging the names of President Jonathan and the First Lady, Dame (Dr.) Patience Jonathan, in the mud. “This untoward attitude of Amaechi, which has become his tradition, with no other aim than to lower the reputation and personality of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and son of the Niger Delta in the estimation of the right-thinking members of the society, has continued to be fired and given undue impetus by Governor Amaechi and a few of his friends on this satanic mission, against all wise counsel and good conscience. “We wonder what Amaechi further intends to achieve by repeatedly maligning the president and his family and linking them to any predicament that befalls him.” The party chieftain said the PDP is “not happy with this public opprobrium from Amaechi. We will no longer condone this irresponsible, irrational and malicious disrespect for our dear president and his wife, by a paranoid Amaechi.” “It is regrettable that rather than admit that he is confused and has lost focus, Governor Amaechi deludes himself into believing that the only thing he can do to gain back the confidence and trust of the disappointed Rivers people is to accuse President Jonathan of being responsible for his non-performance.” But responding to the PDP’s statement, the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt, Chief Tony Okocha, dismissed Obuah’s outbursts as arrant nonsense. He said on phone that it was a statement of fact that the First Lady influenced the posting of Mbu Joseph Mbu to RiversSstate from Oyo State in February this year as Commissioner of Police, to do some dirty jobs, which his predecessor, Mohammed Indabawa, now in Oyo Command, refused to do. He insisted that at no point did the governor insult President Jonathan and his wife. Okocha said: “Governor Amaechi was elected to serve the people of Rivers State. He has the mandate of Rivers people till 2015 by God’s grace. Confusion and loss of focus exist in the imagination of Obuah and his confused supporters. “Rivers people know that Governor Amaechi has been performing well and delivering the dividends of democracy. The developmental strides of Governor Amaechi in Rivers State are unprecedented. No Rivers Governor has done one tenth of what Governor Amaechi has done. “Nothing good can come from the enemies of progress. Obuah and his cohorts have constituted themselves into enemies of the focused Amaechi’s administration. They do not represent Rivers people.” source: http://thenationonlineng.net/new/amaechi-must-stop-insulting-jonathan-wife-rivers-pdp/

The confusion that followed the takeover of Capital Oil and Gas Industries Ltd by the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) has been laid to rest with the clarification on the issue by Mustafa Chike-Obi, the Managing Director/CEO of AMCON. The AMCON MD “AMCON has not taken over Capital Oil but is managing it for a two-year period.” According to Chike-Obi, when Ifeanyi Ubah decided to run for the governorship position of Anambra State, “We gave him two choices; complete breakaway from the company for two years while he runs or he agrees not to leave for two years. He chose to run. So, we will appoint MD, CFO and another ED to run the company. He still owns it, but he cannot write any cheque or sign any money out of the company for two years.” Chike-Obi stated further: “We told him not to run for governorship, but if he runs for governor, he cannot run his company because we do not want to be seen as sponsoring a governorship candidate. So he agreed. He is gone to run for governorship. We have taken over the management of his company. When he finishes running, he can come back to the company, but he can’t do it for less than two years.” The clarifications made by Chike-Obi obviously became necessary based on various insinuations that Ubah opted for politics because the business of Capital Oil failed and was seized by AMCON. A legal luminary, Barr. Uchechi Oleka, pointed out that AMCON cannot seize Capital Oil and Gas Industries Ltd because it does not have the statutory powers to do so. According to him, the AMCON Act in Section 6(1) (0), amongst other things, says: “The Corporation shall have powers to give security for any debt, obligation or liability of any company…” Chike-Obi’s explanation is timely because it sets the record straight on the misinformation that Capital Oil and Gas Industries Ltd is a failed business and that the takeover of any business by AMCON is something extra-ordinary. While it is obvious that the problem of Capital Oil and Gas Industries Ltd began with the non-implementation of a fully deregulated oil regime, the AMCON boss said that without the setting up of AMCON, most of the banks, most of the manufacturing companies, and all the airlines would have folded up. He cited the case of an airline that is owing AMCON N70 billion but the aircrafts they have are worth about N75 billion. “We could take the aircrafts tomorrow; sell them in order to get our money back. But what will that do to Nigeria? The airline in question does about 65 percent of the domestic air travel,” Mr. Chike-Obi stated. He added, “In the manufacturing sector, of the 15 biggest manufacturing companies, AMCON is involved in 10 of them. In the downstream petroleum industry, of the 10 biggest depots, we are involved in eight of them. Of the performing loans bought over by AMCON, the first one was Femi Otedola’s N191 billion owed 10 banks. If those loans ever went bad, assuming we ignored them and they went bad, everything we had done would have been wasted because we would have had another banking crisis.” Reacting to the issue, the Deputy Director Media, Ifeanyi Ubah Campaign Organisation, Emmanuel Chijioke Ibeleme, said, “the furore over whether or not Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah is owing AMCON would not have arisen, in the first instance, If the downstream sector of the oil industry had been totally deregulated. Ifeanyi Ubah had built up the capacity of Capital Oil to a level where for it to effectively service its loans, it must import and distribute much more petroleum products in the country than the current partial deregulation policy would allow it. The insinuation, therefore, that Capital Oil business has failed, and has been seized by AMCON, is unfounded and baseless.” source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/seize-capital-oil-amcon/ |
President Goodluck Jonathan has pleaded with the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to call-off their four-month old industrial action. Jonathan made the plea while commissioning the Faculty of Engineering Complex building of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti yesterday. Jonathan urged ASUU members to review their industrial action and go back to class. The president said his regime was working assiduously to meet the lecturers’ demands. Jonathan, who was the special guest of honor at the first convocation ceremony at the University, acknowledged that the country is facing a lot of challenges, assuring that his government was poised to solving the problem confronting the education sector. ”Even to those of us holding political offices, those in the health sector, the police, the army, the Department of State Service(DSS), the thinking out there is that we are operating in the best environment. This is not true. ’If we all decide to embark on long strike ,definitely, we will all ground the nation.” The president reasoned that if ASUU members have genuine and patriotic mind towards pressing home their demands, four months was enough in achieving this. ”I urge every patriotic Nigerian to plead with ASUU to suspend their strike action and resume class. ”I promise to work with all Nigerians, what ever inadequacies we have with education,we are seriously working towards solving it. ”ASUU should temper their anger with patriotism. ”Long strike will definitely ground our educational sector. ”If you are talking to government and government is not listening, or government is not cooperating with you, that is a different thing entirely. The president promised that his government was steadily trying to solve the problems confronting other sectors of the economy ,including education by providing infrastructural facilities. He commended the founder of Afe Babalola University for establishing a first class privately owned university. On the demand of the state government on the establishment of airport and federal secretariat, Jonathan said N400million had been earmarked in this year’s budget for the airport. Speaking earlier, Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, made a plea on the establishment of an airport in the state. Fayemi noted that the state government had paid part of the N320million counterpart funding for the establishment of the airport. The governor noted that Ekiti was the only state out of those created in 1996 that is yet to have a federal secretariat. He disclosed that Ekiti was yet to be fully reimbursed on the N13billion spent on the construction of federal roads in the state, noting that only N2billion was paid to the state by the Federal Government. Speaking earlier, the founder of the university, Are Afe Babalola(SAN) said he decided to establish the N60billion university because of his love and concern for qualitative education. Babalola claimed that the institution was rated as the second best private university and number 16 in the country, saying his motive was to provide a world class university. He appealed to the Federal Government to come to the assistance of private universities in the country, especially in the area of research. Plea to PHCN workers Meanwhile, the President has urged workers of recently privatised PHCN to shelve their plan to go on strike on the grounds of non-payment of their entitlements. According to him, efforts were on to pay the entitlements. Jonathan also assured Nigerians that electricity supply will reasonably stabilise before the middle of next year. He spoke while commissioning the National Integrated Power Project NIPP 500MW Omotosho Phase II power station in Okitipupa council area of Ondo State. The commissioning of the Omotosho NIPP is coming 16 days after that of Geregu power station. Jonathan said Nigerians should appreciate the efforts of his administration in transforming the power sector. ” I am not saying that electricity supply will be total but I want to assure that light will be reasonably stabilised before the middle of next year,” the President said. According to him, by the time his administration is through with transformation in the power sector, the results will be likened to the reforms in the banking and telecommunication sectors. The President pointed out that all the ten NIPP which will add 4700MW to the national grid, will be completed by the end of first quarter of next year and be privatised. He commended Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, traditional rulers, and youths in the community for their supportive role in the realisation of the project. Earlier, Mimiko said the project will only have meaningful impact when transmission projects are completed. According to Mimiko, the state will soon complete and invite the President to come and commission a 30MW power station in Omotosho which was initiated by his administration. He commended the untiring efforts of Jonathan in transforming infrastructure in the country, noting that posterity will judge him positively. Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, lauded the political will of the President in effecting change not only in the power sector but also in all the sectors. The Omotosho Phase II power station was initiated in 2006 as a follow up to the existing 338MW Omotosho Phase I power station which was constructed with the financial and technical assistance of the government of China. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/jonathan-begs-ASUU-phcn-workers/

Our journalists are gradually living up to expectations. We still need more thorough investigation on this issue. I hope this issue will not be swept under the carpet at last. But wait......Is massive looting and endemic corruption part of the transformation agenda of Mr President? I doubt if GEJ can provide a comprehensive answer to this question! |

Peoples Democratic Party, Rivers State chapter, led by Chief Felix Obuah, said the party is only interested in removing Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, from office legally, and not illegally, as alleged on Thursday by a pro-Amaechi group, Rivers People Forum (RPF). Speaking to Saturday Sun in a telephone interview on Friday, the state secretary of the party, Prince Ibibia Walter, said the Obuah–led state PDP is a legal entity and does not associate itself with illegality. But, he quickly added that the party welcomes any legal means of removing the governor from office. “If the removal of the governor from office is legal, fair and square, then there is no problem. But Rivers PDP led by Obuah, does not subscribe to anything illegal,” he said He, therefore, described the alarm of fresh plot to remove Amaechi from office, as unfounded. Rivers People Forum (RPF) had raised the alarm that it had uncovered a fresh plot to illegally remove the governor from office. The fresh plot, according to the group, is to use blackmail and threat to force him to resign from office. The allegation, which was contained in a press statement by its President, Charles Bekwele, explained that the plan, which he said, was being spearheaded by a former legislator in the state whose identity could not be disclosed, was to give the Chairman of Nigeria Governors’ Forum Chris Ngige treatment. The statement reads: “This fresh plot to illegally remove Governor Amaechi from office is another desperate move by the Abuja cabal that is so desperate to remove the governor from office by ‘all means possible’. This Abuja cabal has hatched a four- part sinister plot that is planned to end with the governor being blackmailed and threatened to resign from office.” “Incontrovertible information at our disposal indicates that the Abuja cabal working with some expired politicians in the state has planned to execute this plot within three weeks. The hatchet man of the expired politicians is a former Rivers State legislator who was recently involved in the failed plot to remove the state Speaker, Otelemaba Amachree, which led to the fracas in the state Assembly. source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/well-remove-amaechi-legal-means-rivers-pdp/

Indications emerged yesterday that the two leading anti-corruption agencies in the country, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) may soon begin investigations and a possible prosecution of the Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah over the purchase of two bullet-proof BMW cars worth N255 million. Already, Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana has sent a petition to the EFCC with a seven-day ultimatum to investigate the allegation. The leading anti-corruption agencies yesterday told Saturday Sun that they’re following the events, but maintained that it was too early for them to respond. They, however, didn’t disclose when an investigation or prosecution will be carried out. The two bullet-proof BMW cars were reportedly bought for the embattled minister in August at the cost of N255 million by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). In separate interviews with Saturday Sun , the spokesmen of EFCC and ICPC, Wilson Uwujaren and Folu Olamiti said the anti-corruption agencies are not in the habit of reacting to events such as this. “I know what you’re talking about, but we’ve no comment yet. We are following the events,” ICPC spokesman, Olamiti told Saturday Sun during a phone chat. In the same vein, the Anti-Corruption Network, a civil society group in Abuja, has threatened to drag the minister before a competent court next week if she fails to resign or explain to Nigerians the source of the money used in purchasing the cars. The group’s executive secretary and former member of the House of Representatives, Dino Melaye further warned that if she fails to heed their demands after 72 hours, his group will mobilise Nigerians and stage a massive protest against her. He said: “We are surprised that at a time when the Federal Government cannot pay ASUU, a minister under President Goodluck Jonathan is buying a car of that amount. The first question to ask is this: is the money spent in buying the cars appropriated by the National Assembly? Our preliminary investigation shows that it was not budgeted for. “It is either her agency is under- declaring the IGR she generates or a kick-back from the remodelling of the airports. We want to know where she got the money from. “If it were to be during Obasanjo or Yar’Adua, the minister would have been fired. We are waiting to see what the president will do as well as the National Assembly. “We are giving the minister 72 hours to resign and refund the money spent to the government coffers. Failure to do so, we will mobilise Nigerians to protest against this abuse of office. Meanwhile, the NCAA at a press conference addressed by its MD, Fola Akinkiotu said that the cars were not meant for the minister alone but for other official use by her ministry and other foreign aviation experts. source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/n255m-bulletproof-cars-efcc-icpc-may-step/

Seventy-two hours after the kidnap of Mrs Augusta Douglas Ayam, elder sister of Mr. Oronto Douglas, Special Adviser to the President on Research and Documentation, her abductors have contacted the family and demanded N500 million as ransom. This is coming at a time when the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) has appealed to the kidnappers to release their victim, revealing that it had made contacts with them. According to a family source, the kidnappers called early yesterday and introduced themselves as the people holding Mrs. Ayam. The source said they demanded a ransom of N500 million to be paid before today, boasting that they were not willing to negotiate. The family member told Daily Sun that immediately the kidnappers called and made their demands, they switched off the phone as all attempts to reach, to know about the health of Mrs. Ayam proved abortive. The source added that the family members have contacted security agencies over the new development, as they not willing to pay ransom. “They contacted us this morning (yesterday) and asked for a ransom of N500 million. It is laughable because we don’t even have that kind of money. They told us to pay before Friday (today), as they would not negotiate. We have already contacted security agencies to intimate them about the development.” The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr Alex Akhigbe, who confirmed that the demand of N500 million had been made, said no ransom would be paid to secure the freedom of Mrs. Augusta. “Yes I have just heard that the demand of N500 million has been made. The family does not have that money and of course, the Bayelsa State Police Command would not allow any ransom to be paid to those bad boys. We have our strategy and we are on their trail. Our ultimate goal is to secure her freedom and arrest the kidnappers,” he said. A reliable security source said investigation into the incident was well advanced and some headway had been made. Also the spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Pulo Shield, Lt Col Onyema Nwachukwu, said the JTF was on top of the search for the kidnappers in the creeks. According to him, the search has been intensified in the last 24 hours, as the gunboats have penetrated the creeks. He expressed confidence that the woman would soon be rescued and her abductors arrested without payment of any ransom. Meanwhile, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has appealed to the kidnappers to release Mrs. Ayam. MEND, in a statement by Jomo Gbomo, said it had established contact with the abductors. According to the group, the abductors were aggrieved over certain issues during the burial of Oronto Douglas’ father last year. MEND said it had declined to act as intermediary between the kidnappers and the family and pleaded with the abductors to release the woman. The statement reads in part: “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has made accidental contact with the abductors of the sister of Mr. Oronto Douglas, Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research and Strategy. “The gang, in addition to seeking ransom wants to use the kidnap to express their disgust due to the ostentation they witnessed during the burial of Pa Douglas, which included the abuse of military helicopters, which were used as a social shuttle service to ferry guests, when such could have been put to better use. As we do not wish to be dragged into playing the role of an intermediary with kidnapers, we have declined their request to get involved based on principles. “We however appealed to them to release the victim who was last seen looking well but harassed unharmed at the earliest.” source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/kidnappers-presidents-aides-sister-demand-n500m-ransom/

President Goodluck Jonathan has given the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) until December 31, 2014 to ensure the enrolment of all eligible persons into the National Identity Database, as provided for in Section 16 of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act No. 23, of 2007. He has also ordered that by the same date, all 14 government agencies requiring identity verification and authentication services or involved in data capture activities must align, with a view to switching over to the NIMC infrastructure. The president noted: “If the work of law enforcement officers is to be enhanced; if consumer credit is to be accessible; if we are to reduce the cost of managing the Naira cash component currently estimated at N192 billion per annum; if we are to reduce the amount of currency in circulation currently put at N1.93 trillion; if we are to achieve a multiple pronged approach to the fight against corruption; and finally, if we are to introduce social security or welfare payments, then we must, first and foremost, establish and verify appropriately, the identities of individuals.” Jonathan gave the order yesterday at the formal launch of the Enrolment Exercise for the Issuance of the National Identification Number (NIN) at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja. He noted that Nigeria cannot be an exception to the global trend towards Identity Management and Centralised National Identity Database. Also, he noted that already, “there is a growing quest for specific databases and identity verification by several government institutions and private sector organizations in our country.” President said: “Aside from being unwieldy, the cost of operating multiple discordant databases and infrastructure is unsustainable. Government cannot afford the continued proliferation of data capture activities. The proliferation does not grant any advantage in efficiency, neither does it make good economic sense. “The growing identity verification needs, therefore, calls for harmonisation and integration of identity databases and the development of a universal service infrastructure.” President Jonathan therefore, charged the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Finance to “ensure that these objectives, which are aimed at streamlining biometrically-linked databases and optimizing scarce resources, are accomplished on record time.” He said while government remains committed to the accelerated development of the National Identity Management System (NIMS), the private sector must also rise up to its role. “Corporate operators must seize the unique opportunities provided by the concession agreement, to make investments in the scheme. The Minister of Interior, Abba Moro, cleared the air on the confusion that other forms of registration will be suspended. According to him, “there is a scepticism in this country, of the whole process of a national identity card management system, viz-a-viz the conduct of activities of some of the MDAs that you are talking about. The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), for instance, does biometric recording of travellers and people who come into and out of Nigeria and keeps the records and maintains the database. The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), certainly has registration exercise for drivers licensees, but the National Identity Management Commission takes responsibility for the entirety of the registration of Nigerians and so there is no conflict in this situation.” Speaking at the launch, the DG of the NIMC, Chris Onyemenam, noted that the main identification is the NIN generated upon registration and is not transferable. He added that the issued identity card has multiple uses and can be used for financial operations linked to MasterCard, Verve and Visa. He noted that the new identification system will help to eliminate identity related fraud, and all forms of deception, adding that by December 31, 2013, they would have mobilised for registration to strategic places, like military formations, university campuses among others to fast-track the enrolment. Onyemenam said so far, 500 systems have been deployed to 42 locations nationwide, while over 2, 000 staff have been engaged. He said the commission records about 25,000 enrolment weekly in the 1, 750 enrolment units in the 774 local government areas. Chairman of the commission, Uche Secondus, requested for full release of N30.6 billion budget for the commission to enable it carry out its functions without hitches. He also requested for an adoption of same salary structure to ensure the retention of skilled personnel that have been acquired and trained by the commission. source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/jonathan-sets-dec-2014-deadline-register-nigerians/

NIGERIANS are expected to witness two major developments in the sky within 17 days: a partial or rather penumbral lunar eclipse around midnight today, and a total solar eclipse on Sunday. According to reports from Discovery.com and World Time and Date, for the partial lunar eclipse, what viewers can observe is the slight darkening of the moon’s lower part as it passes through the lighter shadow right after it has risen. The 2013 penumbral lunar eclipse will be visible as well throughout the Caribbean, Europe, Africa and Asia. A report from Discovery.com says: “For observers in Africa, Europe and western Asia, the eclipse will occur in the middle of the night when the moon is high overhead. The partial shading will be visible as the slight reddish dimming of the normally bright full moon.” According to World Time and Date, the world will experience a solar eclipse on November 3, 2013. Most parts of northern Nigeria, including Kaduna, are expected to experience total solar eclipse unlike other parts of the country like Lagos, which will experience only partial solar eclipse. The last time Nigeria experienced a total solar eclipse was on March 29, 2006, when most Nigerians watched in amazement as the earth experienced total darkness for a split second. According to Wikipedia, a lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth into its umbra (shadow). This can occur only when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned (in ‘syzygy’) exactly, or very closely so, with the earth in the middle. Hence, a lunar eclipse can only occur in the night of a full moon. A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the moon enters the umbra. Unlike a solar eclipse, which can only be viewed from a certain relatively small area of the world, a lunar eclipse may be viewed from anywhere on the night side of the earth. A lunar eclipse lasts for a few hours, whereas a total solar eclipse lasts for only a few minutes at any given place, due to the smaller size of the moon’s shadow. Also, unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses are safe to view without any eye protection or special precautions, as they are no brighter (indeed dimmer) than the full moon itself. The Guardian learnt that the partial eclipse would be visible in most parts of Nigeria between 10.53 p.m. today and 2.48 a.m. October 19, 2013. During the lunar eclipse today, part of the moon will skirt through only the outer edge of the earth’s shadow in what scientists call a penumbral lunar eclipse. The experts stated in the Space.com report: “Earth’s natural satellite will pass through our planet’s faint outer shadow, known as the penumbra, on Friday, with the time of deepest eclipse occurring at 7.50 p.m. EDT (2350 GMT). The effect of such a penumbral eclipse will be subtle compared to the dramatic spectacle of a total lunar eclipse, but it’s still worth craning your neck skyward.” According to Alan MacRobert of Sky and Telescope, the unusual shading on the lower part of the moon “should be fairly plain.” MacRobert noted on his report that viewers would be able to notice lesser traces of the penumbral shading for approximately 45 minutes before and after the mid- eclipse if they looked for the penumbral shadow “moving from east to west across the disc.” source: http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/national-news/135986-nigerians-await-partial-lunar-eclipse-today

I think NEMA's flood prediction is part of the transformation agenda of Mr President. If it had happened, there wouldn't be a BREATH OF FRESH AIR. Don't ask me how because I don't know! |
All Progressives Congress, APC, has accused the Federal Government of employing “cheap and ludicrous strategy” by using market women, religious leaders and students to put pressure on the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to call off its strike. APC, in a statement in Lagos, yesterday, by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said that the strike, which is now in its fourth month, would have ended by now if the Federal Government had pursued its negotiations with ASUU with half the energy it had been using to rally various groups to protest against the union. The party said: ‘’This infantile statement by the leader of the apparently misguided market women is the most irresponsible statement that anyone has made on the long- drawn ASUU strike, and it is a shame that the government is the instigator of such nonsense. ‘’While indeed there are millions of jobless Nigerians, is it just any jobless Nigerian that can be a university teacher? “How does President Goodluck Jonathan, himself a former university teacher, feel about those apparently hired by his administration treating university teachers with so much disrespect?” source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/10/apc-slams-fg-plot-break-ASUU/ |

Kudos to Sahara Reporters for their investigative journalism! Why is the minister afraid of threats to her life? I thought she so much believes in the 'ACT OF GOD'. As the All Progressives Congress (APC) kicks off its campaign in Anambra State, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), and the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, have called on people of the state to vote enmasse for Ngige, saying he is the most experienced of all the candidates being fielded by political parties for the governorship seat. Speaking at a fund-raising dinner organised by the party in Lagos, Governor Fashola asserted that out of all those, who had offered themselves for the governorship of the state, Ngige was the most experienced man for the job, adding that experience was key to the business of governance. The governor told the gathering of prominent Igbo businessmen and women at the Lagos House, Marina, venue of the event that, “Experience is very key in this business. So, if you support him, things will happen quickly because he has held that office before and that is experience. He has Federal Civil Service structure experience; he served as a director in the Federal Civil Service. The driver of government is the public service. That is experience”. Citing his experience on being elected governor in 2007 to emphasize the importance of experience, Governor Fashola said because he was in government of the state for four years as Chief of Staff to his immediate predecessor, assuming duties as governor was not stressful because he already had the experience of office modalities. Giving other reasons why the choice of Dr. Ngige is important, Governor Fashola, who said he has travelled severally to the East at various times, expressed sadness that development has largely eluded that part of the country as a result of lack of the right leadership. In his opening remarks before presenting the candidate, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, described Dr. Ngige as “a good man, very committed to the welfare of the people and committed to the progressive calling”, adding that during his first coming, there were serious challenges which he was able to handle in addition to the many achievements of his administration. Noting that Anambra is more or less a Civil Service State, Asiwaju Tinubu declared, “If you take away the salaries from people, the ordinary housewives and traders in the market will not make money. Without salaries, they could not sustain families and if they could not sustain families that would create greater challenges such as insecurity. The fact that he tackled it and solved it was a sign of a committed individual with good vision”. Urging the people to vote for Dr. Ngige, Asiwaju Tinubu pleaded, “I appeal to you to accept Ngige as an actualizer who could change Anambra. If you give us Anambra and you give us Imo in the Progressives, you will see the entire East will change. Go round the South West you will see performances. All you need is a catalyst, a good example that will be now widespread”. Addressing the well attended fund raising dinner earlier, Dr. Ngige debunked the notion that APC was a Yoruba party saying, “The All Progressives Congress is not Party for any tribe. It is not a Yoruba Party and Yorubas can never own it. It is not Hausa party; the Hausas can never own it. It is not Igbo Party. Igbos can never own it. It is a Nigerian Party for the progress of Nigeria. I say this because of the propaganda being peddled by the APGA government in Anambra State only”. Presenting his manifesto to the people, Dr. Ngige declared, “It is not about me. It is about our children and the future of the State. We have the human and financial resources to make Anambra State a place everyone would like to go to. Statistics don’t lie. While I was there, Anambra was the richest State in the country, today we are the 20th in poverty ranking in the country. We must look at people based on who they are and their ability to deliver. The Party they belong to is secondary”. source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/fashola-tinubu-drum-support-ngige/ |

All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North-East geopolitical zone yesterday extended its hands of fellowship to the aggrieved governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and their supporters, asking them to join the political party. Interim National Vice Chairman, North-East, Alhaji Umaru Duhu, who, along with APC stalwarts, paid a Sallah homage to Governor Murtala Nyako of Adamawa State, said as progressive-minded politicians, they needed to join other progressives in APC to move the nation forward. Other aggrieved PDP governors are Sule Lamido, Jigawa State; Rabiu Kwankwaso, Kano State; Aliyu Wamakko, Sokoto State; Babangida Aliyu, Niger State; Abdulfatah Ahmed, Kwara State and Rotimi Amaechi, Rivers State. Duhu said the APC leadership was not only in Government House to pay the governor Sallah homage, but also to extend the hands of fellowship to him and the entire PDP G7. According to him, the PDP G7 and their supporters deserved to be registered as members of the APC because of their stance in the affairs of the nation and the ideals they were promoting for Nigeria to be given recognition as one of the most democratic nations of the world. Duhu, described their visit as home- coming, because Nyako was a member of the defunct All Nigerian People’s Party (ANPP), which is now part of APC, before he decamped to the PDP. He saw the governor stance as an indication that he still possessed the progressive spirit, in line with the APC ideals. “Our coming to the Government House is a home-coming. It is a re-union of all progressive- minded Nigerians of Adamawa extraction,” he said. He lauded the spirit of the northern governors that formed the new PDP, because the North, in his reasoning, is the engine room of Nigeria and no region of the country could afford to relegate the zone in its political calculation. Nyako, who lauded the ideals of APC and its membership, especially in the North-East region, stated that the new era of change should be embraced by all Nigerians because the country was yearning for the desired change. Although he said he was not a card- carrying member of APC, he stated that he admired the party’s governors, especially in the South- West, North-West and the North- East. According to him, APC had proved itself as a formidable political party that could deliver the goods to Nigerians, because the members were not mediocres. He appealed to Nigerians to rise against mediocrity in the country’s polity, while mediocre politicians should not be allowed to run the affairs of the country. According to him, Nigerians were actually yearning for a change but such desired change could only be achieved if there were equity, justice and fairness in the polity. source: http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/apc-woos-amaechi-pdp-governors/ |
