The US Embassy in Nigeria reportedly made an estimated N2.1 billion on visa applications it rejected in 2015.

Findings made by The Herald indicate that the US Embassy made a total of N5.1 billion from the 158,914 applicants who sought to travel to America for business, tourism and medical purposes.

Of these only, 94,102 applications representing 60% of applicants were approved whilst 64,812 were denied.

US Embassy officials disclosed that they were able to interview 141% more applicants in 2015 due to changes made in their intake procedures. These changes include not allowing applicants to sit down but to remain standing throughout the entire process.

One applicant who recently went for the Visa interview in the Lagos Consulate complained of feeling faint and was repeatedly told by security officials that she was not allowed to stand.

Other applicants complained of sweating due to inadequate air conditioning system for the hundreds of applicants who file through the application room at any given moment on a daily basis.

Despite the harsh treatment, thousands of Nigerians still want to visit the United States, with some seeking for greener pastures abroad whilst others harbour genuine intentions to visit and return to Nigeria, their home country.

Many Nigerians complain of the arbitrariness of the Visa issuance process as the Consular Officers do not have to grant you a visa even if the error in interpreting the information the applicant provided is their own.

For instance an applicant could have a fledgling business in Nigeria, earning N50 million per annum and have family back in Nigeria, however the CO can still deny the application on a general ground under section 214(b).

Kemi a travel analyst says, "Applicants refused nonimmigrant visas are handed standard rejection letters stating that the reason they were denied is because they lack strong ties to their home countries and do not meet the standards for issuance of the visa. In fact, the actual reasons for the denial vary greatly. As is often the case, the actual reason may not be a legitimate, valid reason."

Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele has called on more Nigerians to be like Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the Chairman of Dangote Group.

The CBN Governor made the call, Sunday, during a working visit to the industrial complex of Dangote Petrochemicals and Refinery Company in Epe, Lagos State.

Alhaji Aliko Dangote led the tour in company of Mr. Femi Otedola and several senior officials of the Dangote Group. Also present was Deputy CBN Governor (Economic Policy), Dr. Sarah Alade.

Addressing members of the press after the tour was finished, the CBN Governor said Nigerians should support Alhaji Aliko Dangote.


He said “Today these 3 projects, we are costing them at about $14 bln, out of which he is contributing about $7 billion. $14 billion is about N2.8 trillion. And I think we must congratulate a man like Aliko Dangote for this very laudable project.

“I have come here to see and to tell Nigerians that we need to support people like Aliko Dangote for what they are doing for Nigeria. This is a time we are talking about diversifying our economy away from oil. Fertilizer output is Ammonia and Urea. The output from the Petrochemicals is Polypropylene and Polyethylene. The output from Refinery are the various final products for the Petroleum sector.

Continuing the CBN governor said when the projects comes on line in 2017 and 2018, Nigeria will enjoy huge foreign exchange savings as 35% to 40% of our import needs will be eliminated.

He projected that by completion, the Dangote Group will be able to sell $6 billion to the CBN on a yearly basis. This computation is based on the value of export products that the Ammonia plant, the Petrochemicals company and Refinery will earn by the time they are all on stream by Q3, 2018.

The CBN Governor said when Dangote first approached the apex bank for support in 2014, he was still an operator, and that the CBN committed to help him on his futuristic vision to develop Nigeria.

Emefiele added, “More Nigerians need to think like Dangote.”

Alhaji Aliko Dangote said the reasons he embarked on this project was to “stop importation, diversify the economy and earn foreign exchange”.

He said today, Dangote Cement does not need foreign exchange as it sourced most of its raw materials from the local environment.

He said the vision for the petrochemicals and refinery was the same, as by the time the plant is operational, it will source its local materials (crude oil and gas) from Nigeria. Noting that the current FX currency requirement was to import equipment.

Dangote added, “Currently, Nigeria imports 100% of its fertilizer needs but by the time we are finished, we will be the biggest exporter in Africa.”

Corruption fight will be tough – Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soynka, yesterday, expressed confidence in the ongoing war against corruption by the Buhari administration, even as he said “the fight is going to be a hard one.”

Soyinka made the remarks when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Freedom Park, Lagos Island.

According to the literary icon, the practice of abandoning the fight against corruption half way, “will not happen this time.”

Soyinka went on: “We have never had a situation where we were faced not just by emergency but critical emergency with our children being kidnapped under our noses and we were helpless, soldiers were being sent to the war front to defend our essence and we were not backing them up.

“The fight against corruption in Nigeria is going to be a hard one. There is no question whatsoever that we are not where we were before this administration entered. But we all have to be very careful and I have used this expression again and again that corruption fights back and the ardent fighters are those who are already within the cesspool of corruption and you can see that in the recent episode which I am not going to talk about, I am going to await a certain letter which I am told to expect and I hope that the letter writer brings it to my Egba hideout and I will educate him.

“Let’s watch the fight against corruption. It is on two levels: one directly against corruption and counter attacks which we are. There is no retreat no matter the libel or libelous garbage from any part of this country.”

He described the alleged dinner expenses spent by the past Rivers State Government, led by Hon. Rotimi Amaechi to honour him on his birthday, as “insulting, disrespectful and highest desperation” for anyone to try to rubbish his image on the pages of newspapers.

Soyinka is an embarassment for not castigating Amaechi for expensing that amount on a common banquet that IDPs use N8000 to host.

Speaking with sources in Dangote, The Herald has learned that Aliko Dangote was not involved in anyway.
Another source close to the heart of the beef has also told us that it was not Alhaji Aliko Dangote who ended the beef.

Pressed further all the source would disclose was it was either Mr. Femi Otedola, the billionaire owner of Forte Oil and DJ Cuppy’s father or “Tinubu”, who was responsible for having the beef squashed.
