BusinessBuharinomics: FG Plans To Borrow $9 Bln, May Launch Eurobond Q1 2016 by Jengem(op): 4:02pm On Dec 17, 2015
The President Muhammad Buhari led Federal Government has announced plans to borrow big time in order to spark up a currently dull Nigerian economy. The plans are part of a 2016 N1.84 trillion ($9.3 billion) borrowing plan which will see the FG tap a third of the requirement from foreign lenders.

Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun confirmed the plan to Bloomberg via telephone.

“We need to stimulate the economy because we cannot afford this downturn to be excessively prolonged,” Adeosun told Bloomberg.

“We think we have the headroom to borrow. We’re going to mix it between local and foreign debt. We’re talking to multilateral agencies already and we’re at an advanced stage. Then we’ll look at the foreign capital markets.”

The finance minister points out Nigeria’s low debt to GDP ratio which is 12% compared to Angola (57%) and South Africa (48%) as the major reason the Buhari government can afford to borrow big.

Members of the Nigerian Senate have given their support in principle, with one PDP lawmaker from the South-South saying the President could borrow up to $50 billion as long as he fixed the country.

Many Nigerians have become disenchanted with the current administration due to the financial hardship the toll of the last elections have taken on Nigeria.

The Federal Government also plans to scrap subsidy in order to enhance savings and allow the market to operate more efficiently by cutting out fuel queues and other bottlenecks but this move is expected to draw the ire of Nigerians.

Hopefully gains from other people friendly policies like a social welfare plan for some of the most economically disenfranchised Nigerians are on the way.

Adeosun also plans to cut down on government waste, audit Federal payroll, enforce remittance from government agencies in order to grow and maintain a stable revenue base for the country.

Politics“buhari Was Accused Of N2.8 Bln Scam As Oil Minister” – Madueke by Jengem(op): 2:31pm On Nov 22, 2015
Former Oil minister, Diezani Madueke who is currently undergoing successful treatment for cancer in the United Kingdom has stated that Nigeria has a well recorded history of vilifying its oil ministers.

In an interview with Dele Momodu’s Boss Newspaper, Madueke said even President Muhammad Buhari as an oil minister (1976-1978) under then head of state, General Olusegun Obasanjo was accused of N2.8 billion fraud when same amount disappeared from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corpration’s (NNPC) Midlands Bank account in the UK.

She added, “Till this day no one has been able to prove that the then Major General stole a kobo.”

She also named other former ministers who have been vilified to include Prof. Tam David West.

Madueke declared that the allegations of corruption against her are false, insisting that as a technocrat with sufficient experience at Shell, she was used to keeping proper accounts.

She insinuated that during her time as an oil boss she knew she stepped on some powerful toes both home and abroad just to ensure that Nigerians got the best deal.

EducationClay Math Institute Denies Century Old Math Problem Solved By Nigerian by Jengem(op): 8:21pm On Nov 16, 2015
The Clay Math institute has distanced itself from claims that the Riemann Hypothesis, a 156 year old unsolved mathematical problem has been solved by a Nigerian egghead, Dr. Opeyemi Enoch. Enoch is a professor with the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Several publications had gone to town with the report yesterday and earlier today, stating that the scholar had won the $1 million prize offered to whomever can solve the problem.

Email checks with the Clay Math institute resulted in a response from the Office of the President of the institute.

Naomi Kraker, administrative manager in an email to The Herald said, “As a matter of policy, the Clay Mathematics Institute does not comment on solutions to the Millennium Problems. The current status of the problems and complete information about each, can be found at www.claymath.org; I’m afraid I can not add anything beyond what is available there.”

Subsequent check on the website revealed that the problem actually remains unsolved.
