EPISODE TWENTY-THREE.. I parked my car in the only available space in the compound. I greeted my neighbours sitting outside and made my way to my apartment. I flung myself on the couch after locking the door and slept off. I woke up to the sound of my phone's ringtone. I yawned and answered the phone call, it was tolu and she asked for money as usual, i ended the call after promising to send her something the following week. Her call made me remember how long it's been since i talked with my mother. I placed a call to her and we spoke for a long period of time. I also called tinu, she was obviously more busy than i am. I stood up and went into my room to remove my clothes, after which i had a shower in the bathroom and changed into clean clothes. By now i had forgotten about the phone in the pocket of my uniform. I strolled into the kitchen to cook some noodles. I was already starving and noodles was the fastest food i could ever think of cooking at that moment. I switched on the television and tuned in to a news channel, it was campaign news as usual. This chief garba is really working hard, i thought to myself. I was about returning to the kitchen when i heard the newscaster say something about state security, i remembered ayo and dialled his number immediately. He did not pick any of my calls, so i decided to text him instead. I outlined all what happened during the day and emphasised the need for us to see and discuss. I did not remove my eyes from the phone until it indicated that the message was delivered. I had barely dropped my phone when my phone rang out, the number displayed was not in my contact's list and even the truecaller application on my phone could not identify the number. I picked the call and waited for the person on the other end to speak out, i was fed up with the silence on the other end as well and was about terminating the call when the person spoke out. Hmm, typical response of military officers right, i recognized the voice to be that of ayo immediately and laughed out loud. You did not pick my calls and it seems like you did it intentionally, shey you dey vex ni? I asked him in pidgin english. I was in a meeting actually, it was your message that prompted me to ask for permission, how you intend to go about investigating and all of the details you just sent me should be between you and i, what i know from experience is that the people perpetrating this crimes have eyes everywhere" i'll be visiting you next week... |
EPISODE TWENTY-TWO I placed a call to john after i recovered from the shock of seeing something that once caused me pains. I refused to open the door nor touch any other part of the vehicle so that the fingerprints on the vehicle will not be confusing. I walked back to my vehicle and patiently waited for the arrival of the police. Different thoughts ran through my mind, i was convinced inside of me that the person who murdered the driver of the truck was the person who murdered my father. The police arrived in company of the "DPO". The dpo ignored my greetings and walked briskly towards the truck as i followed suit. The fingerprints were recorded before the door of the truck was forced open. A police uniform was found in the vehicle and a blood stained knife was found on the vehicle's floor. The corpse of the man was placed in the back of the police van and someone was asked to drive the truck down to the police station. I was about stepping out of the truck when my eyes stumbled upon something that looked like a phone under the driver's seat. I bent down and shoved my hand in and brought out a mobile phone from under the seat. The manner in which the phone was struck under the seat must have deceived the policemen who searched the truck making them to believe that the phone was a part of the chair. I did not know what made me drop the phone into my pocket instead of handing it over to my colleagues in charge of the case. I got into my vehicle and slowly drove after the police convoy. I was about settling into my seat in the office when someone came calling, said the "dpo" wants to see me. I walked into his office after he ordered me in. James, how did you get to the location of the incident before us and how come you were not in the office by that time? He asked. So what you are trying to tell me is that you left the station without asking for my permission? He said after i explained to him how i found myself at the venue of the incident. Well you can go back to your office, he added without allowing me to say anything. But you should know you are in for something big, he further said as i exited his office. James, calm down. The highest he can do is make you stay on the road for a week or two weeks at most, just count it as an opportunity for you to make quick money from those disobedient commercial drivers, john said laughing. I couldn't help but smile a little, but what was running in my mind was far more than making money on the road. It was my best shot at getting the person who murdered my father and i was going to make good use of that opportunity... |
EPISODE TWENTY-ONE Carlos walked slowly towards the truck with his hands behind him. He increased his pace after tightening the silencer on his pistol. Officer, you people dont usually stop us on this road and we...ramon was yet to complete his statement when carlos shot him in the head. Carlos got into the truck and took off the police uniform on him. He was left with his short and a tshirt. He pushed ramon to to the other seat and took a knife out of his pocket. He leaned towards him and carved his signature sign on the poor man's stomach. He got down from the truck, locked the doors and crossed the road with a jog, his car was parked down the road. The road was free of traffic that day and he couldn't help but whistle out loud, the job was easy and without much stress, it was only one car that drove on the road and that was when he was done with the job. James... I sped on in silence and only eased my leg on the accelerator whenever i wanted to change the music blaring from my car's stereo. The road was unusually free that day and i couldn't help but thank my stars. I'll be back in the station before the man even knows i'm not on seat. I thought to myself. I had not driven two kilometres more when i saw a foreign man step out of a truck not well parked by the side of the road, he seemed to be in a hurry and quickly crossed the road, his face was somehow familiar but i could not place his face I concluded that he must be pressed, besides i had no time to waste as i was in a hurry. I got home in less than twenty minutes, a journey i make in thirty-five minutes every morning. I quickly picked the files and hurried out of my apartment. I was driving at a reasonable speed when i noticed the truck was still parked on the road and the way it was placed on the road could cause an accident, but there was nothing i could do to help the situation as the driver was not in the car. I already sped past the truck when my instinct told me to check the car out. I eased my car off the road and parked by the side of the road. I ran towards the truck as i did not want to waste much time. I looked through the window and what i saw brought back memories... I saw the bloody letter c.. |

EPISODE TWENTY With the record number of cases you've solved, everybody knows you should have been promoted years ago, come on, you have been in the "ASP" position for years, your strained relationship with the "DPO" is something you have to worry about, i think you should just walk up to him and apologise, that's my own say. John said, concluding his epistle. I heard you, i just pray this time around, i'm promoted, i replied him without removing my gaze from the newspaper in my hand. Excuse me, john said as he walked out the door. I closed the newspaper and considered John's advice. Most of my colleagues with whom i graduated were already senior officers in the police force. Based on my qualifications, i should be getting close to be an assistant commissioner of police, yet here i was. Even john who was my junior when i came in was already my senior. This DPO hates me, i'm sure he's not been recommending me for promotions, he's probably keeping my files in his office without sending it to the necessary quarters. I thought, as i concluded in my mind to see him. James' we've been asked to submit the necessary files. I jerked out of my thoughts as i heard john's voice. I opened my drawer and found nothing, then i remembered i left the files at home. John, i forgot the files at home. I have to go get it now. Ok, just be fast about it. He replied as he took his files and left the office. I took my keys and rushed out of the station. I got into my plymouth and took off. “Somewhere in ogun state” Carlos stood in the middle of the road in his stolen police outfit, he knew his cover might be blown as it was rare for foreign police officers to be found in Nigeria. But he knew it was just a matter of time before his target shows up. Toni, "you wont believe what i just saw!! i think this company is dealing in hard drugs. I've kept some samples, i'll show you when i come back". Ramon clicked on the send option and waited for the message to be delivered before he proceeded on the journey. Carlos raised his hand to stop the truck as it came into view. Ramon pulled up by the side of the road. The policeman must be new in the force as D&c trucks are not usually stopped on the road, he thought to himself. More was his surprise when the policeman turned out to be a foreigner... |
EPISODE NINETEEN Unknown location... Ten years later.. Musa' what do you have to say? Chief garba asked. Sir, some guys are getting suspicious of our activities and they seem to be struggling with curiosity in their minds at our ogun state branch, musa said into the air. Musa, i don't think you are ready to be part of us, i placed you in charge of that area yet you cant take any decisions on your own. Things as delicate as this calls for drastic measures. If they bore their suspicions to the public'' do you think we are safe? Whoever is inquisitive about our operations should be clipped before they squeal. Chief garba shouted angrily, make sure you inform carlos immediately after this meeting, he added. Yes sir, musa answered fearfully. Chief garba, the primary elections are over, don't you think we should take a break and stop the shipment of those plants for the time being. So nothing will jeopardize you ambitions as the main election is fast approaching, chief Ade suggested. Ade, there is no point in what you just said. If we stop the shipments' how do i get enough money to campaign for the president's seat? Come on, we've spent years in this business and we are still growing, besides we've got solid covers, chief garba said as he stood up. we should round up, i've got meetings to attend, he concluded. Hey, Toni said out loud to gain his colleague's attention. Toni, how are you today? Ramon asked. I'm good..what about you? As usual bro, bored, i'll be hitting the road seven pm in the evening, mad musa rescheduled my day, Toni spoke angrily. Oops, sorry man, i'm heading out now, Ogun state is two hours from here at most, i should be back before nightfall, then i'd hit the club, ramon sarcastically replied. You are always lucky man, i'm even to deliver at oyo state and wife is pregnant at home, I wish i can trade assignments with you. Safe journey anyway, toni said as he turned to walk in the opposite direction. Dude, ramon called out as toni was about entering into the company, remember our deal? He asked. What deal? Toni asked in return as he turned around to advance towards ramon. You forgot already, but when i'm half-way through this journey, i'm opening this truck to check out what we saw with musa that day, he said excitedly. Ooh, i forgot already, suit yourself. Toni muttered. Carlos, the first man is heading out now, make sure you execute a clean job as usual. Musa, shouted into the phone. I heard you fool, Bleep off, the voice sounded from the receiver's end. Musa hissed and terminated the call before exiting the toilet.. |

EPISODE EIGHTEEN Your i.d please, the policeman by the gate asked me as i stopped the car. here it is, i said smiling. Oh, you are the new guy? He questioned me. Yes, i replied. You can drive in, he said as he returned my i.d. I slowly drove in and scanned for a free parking space, there was just enough space beside a 'volvo 240' to place my car. I took a deep breath and slowly studied the police station, there was the vast flowers planted in front of the building and the operational vehicles scattered around. I stepped out of my vehicle, turned in my flying shirt and tapped the lock button on my key holder. With my heart in my mouth, i slowly made my way to the entrance. I was about entering the station when i looked behind and of course, my car was the odd one out. Welcome Detective” the lady at the counter voiced after i greeted her, the D.p.o said you should report to him immediately you resume this morning. I nodded in reply to every greeting directed towards me as i walked briskly towards the d.p.o's office. I knocked slightly and waited for his response before i entered. “Inspector james, top of his class, born and bred in lagos, twenty-two year old, blah blah blah....The d.p.o cried out” I must confess, you are the first police academy graduate to grace this station, most of the others are recruits and i'm nothing less than impressed, you are welcome into our midst. He added, Thank you sir and i promise to serve this country with all i've got. Well, we've all said that before, he replied with a grin before picking up his mobile phone. Sergeant john, see me in my office right now. I heard the D.p.o say into the phone. In a matter seconds, a lanky dude walked in, he quickly winked at me before saluting the d.p.o., “sergeant” you will be sharing your office with the new guy, show him round and help him settle down. Yes sir, john replied as he signalled at me to follow him. So, i think you know my name already. Yes, he called you john, I replied, i'm james, james matthews. I added. Ooh, we already know, we've been told one hotshot has been posted here. We heard you came top of your class, nice meeting you mate, john said as he grabbed my hand for an handshake. Yea, me too i replied. He brought out a key as we neared a door, our office is the last in the building and i'm pleased to share with you, john said as he turned the door knob... |
EPISODE SEVENTEEN It was during the journey that ayo told me how he was able to get the identity of the person pictured with my late father. He got the information from an online internet forum after searching for informations in the crime section of the forum. He also told me how he hit a dead-end in the murder case and was laid off the case. We gisted about a lot of things and he really kept my company as we travelled back to lagos. The way he switched gears and sped on the smooth road amazed me and i decided the first thing i will do during the long break is to take my driving lessons. i had forgotten about my father as at then... We passed through lots of police checkpoints on our way and we took turns to show our identity cards so we could prove to eachother which agency was superior, the SSS or the police. We had no trouble with the police after identifying ourselves, one of the policemen even recognised me. Said he saw my name along with my picture in the latest edition of the leading newspaper in the country. I was a celebrity overnight... Ayo left for his house the following day, he insisted on staying behind since he was on leave, he was to report back to his agency the following month. So there was enough time for us to catch fun and more importantly, take my driving lessons. Tolu was finally in school after staying at home for close to four years. She was offered admission at the prestigious university of Nigeria nsukka. I was able to perfect my driving skills before ayo went back to his station, i took time to take mum anywhere she wanted to go. My car was always a centre of attraction and i flaunted it whenever i was chanced, the speed coupled with it's structure attracted peoples attention. I toured the streets of lagos, made new friends and tried hard to be social. After waiting for a year, i was finally posted to ogun state, sango to be precise. Two uniforms was allocated to me alongside an M16 rifle. I proceeded to sango to check myself in, and i was successful in getting a self-contained apartment that was quite far from my station, i was less bothered by this since i had my plymouth by my side, a luxury most of my colleagues weren't chanced to possess. By the following week, i was officially a police man... And this is where the STORY begins.. |

EPISODE SIXTEEN In this academy, every graduating set is addressed as a class and there is always someone to be referred to as the top of each class. For the first time in the history of this academy, a female is among the top three of this graduating class. Join me in appreciating the number one and the top of his class. Cadet inspector/Detective Mathews james. I was all smiles as i heard my name sound from the mouth of the commandant, i pecked mum and rubbed tolu on the head as i proceeded to the front for my medal, The master of ceremony further called Tayo and tinu as the second and third respectively. We shook hands and hugged eachother as we smiled for various cameras eager to capture our faces. I was finally free from the daily drills, the unending push-ups, the never satisfying meals...i just couldn't help but shed tears, mother was the happiest, she was probably happy i came back in one piece, tolu also kept on laughing and i saw she was eager for gists again. I won a car from the governor of the state where our academy was located and lots of monetary prizes. I yawned as i rolled on the bed to check the time, it was thirty minutes after eight in the morning, been a while i slept this long'' i thought to myself. Mum and tolu went back home already while i waited behind so i could bring the car home the following day, Ayo was the one to drive the car as i was not yet competent. I was about picking my phone to call him when the phone rang out, i checked the screen and saw that ayo was the one calling, i eagerly picked the phone. hey james, i'm at the gate and they refused to let me in. i'm on my way, i replied before terminating the call. I half walked and half ran to the gate as ayo sounded desperate on the phone. By the time i got to the gate, they already let ayo in and great was my embarrassment when the policemen guarding the gate started shouting number one and kept on repeating it. I just waved as i signalled to ayo to advance towards me. I greeted my instructors and every important personnels in the academy before i finally left in company of ayo. Ayo was behind the wheel in my Plymouth Barracuda... |

FOURTEEN AND FIFTEEN.. I quickly finished my meal which got mum suspicious as i was known to be a slow eater, but my eagerness to read ayo's next message made me finish my food on time. I opened the messenger app and clicked on ayo's contact, but i was surprised to see there was no message from him yet. I decided to send him a message instead. What are the informations you've gotten about the man? the one pictured with my father. I was about clicking on the send option when a message from ayo popped up. Sorry, the service here is bad, so i had to move somewhere else but that was after i plugged the phone to charge as it could shut down anytime soon, There is an issue though'' I searched for information regarding the man in the picture with your father on the police database, but i found nothing. His name inclusive, it must have been wiped out from their database. Disappointment was registered on my face as i read out the last message. What is your next plan? I quickly asked him. Well, i'll just keep on working with the intel i have in hand already, and the link to this victim's death is still your father, with that, i should be able to come up with something, But i'll still keep on trying to find out the identity of the man. Ok, just keep me posted, i replied. Lest i forget, which of the police stations did you try getting the information from? I added I checked out all the police stations but their informations are stored under one unit, so i had no problem getting what i needed. I cloned the informations on their computers and generated the password, Ayo replied. Ok, all the best bro, i put in, i'll let you know if i remember anything that may benefit you. Thanks, he replied. I resumed at the academy and put much vigour into the activities as it was the last and final phase of our training. Hey, james. The chief instructor wants to see you, i heard tinu say. Ooh, what for? i squeezed my face. Are you asking me? I dont know. She chuckled as she walked away. We had just finished the afternoon drills and i was on my way to the lodge to freshen up when tolu came calling. I turned back and raced to the instructor's office. I knocked lightly on the door, who's there? The voice asked from within. James sir, i answered. Come in james. I gently closed the door as i stepped into his office. I stood at attention and raised my right hand to salute him. You asked of me sir, i said in the most official way. Yes, i want you to gather few of your colleagues, we have an issue to resolve some kilometres fron here, and we have to be fast about it or else someone might be a victim of jungle justice if we tarry too much. He said without looking up from his table. Aye sir, i said and moved out of the man's office immediately so he wont see frustration plastered on my face if he decides to look up at that moment. I dont know why they've made me their number one person when it comes to any outing'' i thought to myself and hissed to show my disgust. Is tayo not in the premises? I further asked myself. Tayo was the leader of group h and always liked to be everywhere. I was able to gather just six of my willing colleagues including tinu after she threatened not to talk to me again if i refused to take her along. They all thought i was privileged, what they did not know was that i dreaded going for this kind of operations after that first incident. We set out in one of the academy's bus, we were eight in number, the chief instructor, the driver and the six of us. We barely drove for ten minutes when we got to the place, it was a market place. There was a large crowd and they seemed to be attracted to something in their middle. As soon as they heard the siren sounding from our vehicle, they all dispersed, i noted that most of them went back to their sheds while some ran away in the opposite direction, most of them are traders i concluded within me. After they all cleared the spot, we saw a foreigner in the middle and if not for our timely arrival, he would have been murdered as there was a keg of petrol and two tires were already places round his neck. We approached him and relief showed on his face. We removed the tires from his neck and allowed him to seat on one of the chairs found nearby, the others questioned him as i went to one of the female traders and asked her what really happened. She told me the man was accused of stealing and they wanted to burn him alive, i thanked her and went to meet the others. As i got nearer to them, i deduced that the man is either from spain or mexico as he looked like the footballers i watch on television. He was already furious as anger was expressed on his face. Barbaric people, that is why they are yet to develop, he said with much fury, our instructor obviously vexed shouted at him to keep quiet. “Proximo que" he snapped at the instructor, you gonna kill me? He added. Let's get put of here, tinu said ignoring the man's last comment. Yea, but we have to drop this man at his place, the instructor said as he pointed at the him. We dropped the man in an hotel where he said was lodging in and proceeded back to the academy. Tinu later told me the man was an engineer who was contracted to work on one of the roads in the city, he wanted to have a taste of the african recipe which was why he came to the market, he picked a cherry and digged his teeths into the fruit probably thinking his country was the same as Nigeria. The seller on seeing that started shouting and attracted the other traders who just grabbed and wanted to deal with him at that moment, his explanations fell on deaf hears. I laughed that my ribs ached after tinu told me the story. The incident taught me another lesson, that patience matters a lot and dialogue is a necessity when resolving issues. I still laugh anytime i remember the incident... |

EPISODE THIRTEEN I finished bathing and was walking towards my room, when attention was drawn to our family picture on the wall again. The picture was taken few years before dad's tragic death. I was about looking away when i remembered the dream i had after his death... Seems i will be starting my police job before i'm recognised legally'' i said to myself. I entered my room, dressed up and was about making my way to the kitchen when i saw there was a missed call notification on my phone. The number was a strange number but i decided to call back. I was about saying hello after the receiver picked the call when someone knocked on the door.. Welcome mum, i said after checking through the keyhole, how are you my dear? She asked as she went in the direction of her room. I'm fine mum, i answered as i took what she brought home to the kitchen. Hello, the voice sounded from the other side of the phone. Yes, i missed a call from this number, i said into the phone. Is this james? The person asked. Yes i sounded. It's ayo williams, i sent you a message via messenger and you are yet to read it not to talk of replying it. Ohh, i'll do that right away i said into the phone eagerly as i cut the call. I clicked on my messenger app and opened the message, in the message ayo sent were screenshots and highlights of what he was able to get from the police database. I closed the app so i could save ayo's number first. After saving the number i opened my gallery and studied the screenshots. The screenshot had no information on my father's death, but when i swiped so i could see the second picture, i saw father's corpse picture and another man's picture joined together, the picture wasn't clear enough. I was about checking out another screenshot when i noticed that the inscription made on my dad's stomach when he was murdered was also on the other man's stomach. The other screenshots carried less important details and i decided to reply ayo via messenger. Seems this thing is much more complicated, i had typed. Yea, and we've lots of work to do, he replied me. James'' i heard mum call, food is ready. Ok ma, i said. Ayo was still typing as the messenger indicated... |
EPISODE TWELVE Police officers! Ayo said with a confused expression on his face. They are police officers for God's sake, it's their job. I replied him. Yes, but why will they come a year after his death? Ayo asked no one in particular. Hmm, i reasoned along with him, why did they wait for a year before coming? I asked myself. Anyway, i will look into their database and check for any records. Ayo sounded. How do you plan to access their database? and the database we are talking about, is it not all those registers used in their stations? Do you plan on stealing them? I threw the question at him. Hehe, are you not a police officer in view? He jokingly asked, the Nigerian police evolved already and on the global stage, they are ranking high with most developed nations. Their records are now computerized and accessing their records wont be a problem. That was why the SSS recruited me, He boasted with a smile forming on his lips. Hmmm, i see. Then you must be a really good hacker, i said to him. Well i prefer to be called a cracker, Ayo replied with a grin on his face. I should be on my way, he added. Ohhh, that means we can still talk before i go back? Yea, i should have your number, he replied. Ayo left after spending some more time with me at home, he collected my number and also made me tell him the year daddy died, he told me he needed it so as to make his efforts in accessing the police's database easier, he probably will just check for records based on that specific year' i had thought to myself. I unplugged my phone from the electric extension box while switching on my phone, My discussion with Ayo made me totally forget about the phone. I opened my messenger app and saw lots of unread messages, i replied all except for one message from an unknown number, I locked my phone and slowly made my way to the bathroom, i really need that shower, i said to myself. My room had no bathroom, so i had to use the bathroom beside mom's room and there was no how i wouldnt walk through the living room as the living room separated the children's room from the parent's room, our house was a three bedroom apartment... |
