PoliticsWe Are Sorry For ‘Toxic State’ Of Polity – PDP by Jirate(op):
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has claimed responsibility for the political tension in the country and apologized to Nigerians for “whatever role” it played in causing the “toxicity that pervades the political space” in the country.

In a statement via its Twitter handle, the former ruling party lamented the situation in the political space “with respect to discussions on national issues” and the division it was causing in the country.

It said, “This toxicity, some of which finds expression in discussions across social media platforms, has reached the level where bridges are being burnt, personal relationships are being strained and an unnecessary tension fills what should ordinarily be patriotic and enlightening conversations on how to move the nation forward.

“We are dismayed that this tension has reached the level where the finer points of our national conversation are drowned out in shouts and screams across the political divide.

“We accept responsibility and apologize for whatever role we have played in reaching this level of toxicity.”

The party also suggested that it was adopting a new approach to its activities and called on it supporters to show more maturity when commenting on national issues.

“Henceforth, we commit to focusing only on the issues and proffering cogent and competent solutions to the issues facing the nation,” it said.

“We urge our supporters and the believers in the ability of our party to provide these solutions to henceforth show more restraint and maturity as we point out the many obvious flaws of this administration and proffer solutions and alternatives to their many failures.”

Quoting Abraham Lincoln, it encouraged Nigerians not to allow political differences tear the nation apart.

By Michael Oche
As the leadership tussle between the Ali Modu Sheriff-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee rages on, a middle ground is being worked out by some senior members of the party.

A source in the know of recent happenings in the party informed LEADERSHIP that ahead of the Port Harcourt convention of the party slated for August 17, some party chieftains are rooting to have a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, to head the party in order to stabilize it.

Ribadu, who was a founding member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), defected to the PDP in 2014 and contested the Adamawa state governorship election under the PDP platform.

According to a senior party member, the choice of Ribadu was predicated on the criteria set for the kind of leadership the party would want to have in order to revamp itself ahead of the 2019 general elections.

“Though the party has indicated that the next chairman will emerge from the southern part of the country, some of us actually feel that for us now, it should be about the individual and in fact we need a strong voice from the north that is well respected to redeem the much-battered PDP image in the north.

“Yes, Ribadu actually disappointed some of us when he was approached to take over the party in February. He was like already taking up the post before he had a change of mind which created a serious crisis for us since we had fixed the NEC meeting at the time. This was how we ended up with Sheriff.

“But somehow, some critical stakeholders of the party feel we still need someone with the carriage and respect in the mould of Ribadu to lead us out of the woods. And the important thing is that both Makarfi and Sheriff are okay with the man. So, the issue is being iron out now. We are reaching out to him,” the source revealed.

Many military contracts were awarded without due process and incompetent vendors got the jobs, it was learnt last night.

A panel investigating Defence equipment procurement between 2007 and 2015 has uncovered massive fraud in Army contracts.

The Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement (CADEP), headed by Air Vice Marshal Jon Ode, which submitted its third interim report to President Muhamadu Buhari last week, recommended further investigations, which the president has approved.

To be investigated are two former Chiefs of Army Staff – Lt.-Gen. Azubike Ihejirika and Lt.-Gen. Kenneth Minimah.

Sixteen other retired and serving army officers are also to be probed, besides 12 serving and retired public officials and 24 Chief Executive Officers of companies involved in the procurement of equipment.

They are: former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (II), Dr Nurudeen Mohammed and three former permanent secretaries in the Ministry of Defence – Mr. Bukar Goni Aji, Mr. Haruna Sanusi and Mr. E.O, Oyemomi.

The CEOs to be investigated include Col. Olu Bamgbose (retd.) of Bamverde Ltd; Mr. Amity Sade of Doiyatec Comms Ltd and DYI Global Services and Mr. Edward Churchill of Westgate Global Trust Ltd.

A statement last night by the Committee gave the total amount spent on procurement and operations within the period as N185,843,052,564.30 and $685,349,692.49.

The panel found that Army contracts were awarded by the Ministry of Defence without ‘’significant input from end-user (Nigerian Army) and to vendors who lacked the necessary technical competence.

‘’As an example, three contracts with a total value of N5,940,000,000.00 were awarded to DYI Global Services Ltd and Doiyatec Comms Nig. Ltd (owned by the same individuals) for the procurement of military hardware, including 20 units of KM-38 Twin Hull Boats and six units of 4X4 ambulances fitted with radios.

“The committee discovered that the two companies collected N5,103,500,000.00, representing 86 per cent of the total value of the three contracts worth N5,940,000,000.00, but only performed to the tune of N2,992,183,705.31,’’ the report said.

The committee also found that a contract worth N169,916,849.77 for the procurement of 53 armoured vehicles spare parts, with 90 days completion time, is yet to be completed five years after.

For contracts awarded directly by the Army, the Committee found out that many were characterised by ‘’lack of due process, in breach of extant procurement regulations and tainted by corrupt practices.

‘’In this regard, a review of the procurement carried out by Chok Ventures Ltd and Integrated Equipment Services Ltd established that between March 2011 and December 2013, the two companies exclusively procured various types of Toyota and Mitsubishi vehicles worth over N3,000,000,000.0 for the Army without any competitive bidding.

‘’Though the committee found no credible evidence of delivery of the vehicles, the vendors were fully paid based on job completion certificate authenticated by the then Chief of Logistics. Also, analysis of the various bank accounts of the two companies showed transfers to individuals related to then Chief of Army Staff,’’ the report said.
