PoliticsFresh Plot To Scuttle Nigeria Elections Jonathan Holds Secret Meeting With Atiku by jjamani(op): 10:21pm On Mar 17, 2015
President Goodluck Jonathan paid a secret visit to former Vice President Abubakar Atiku on Friday night to hold a meeting that lasted till the early hours of Saturday.

Sources at the Presidency told SaharaReporters that Mr. Jonathan went to Mr. Atiku’s home with the aim of persuading the former VP to lead a so called interim government of national unity that the president has been covertly attempting to sell to numerous political figures in recent weeks. One source said Mr. Jonathan and some hawkish members of his inner circle, including Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke, First Lady Patience Jonathan, Governors Olusegun Mimiko and Ayo Fayose of Ondo and Ekiti respectively, as well as senior presidential aide Doyin Okupe, have decided that handing over power to Muhammadu Buhari “is out of the question.”

Several electoral monitoring groups are projecting that Mr. Buhari, a retired army general and the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is the odds-on favorite to win the March 28 presidential election.

When SaharaReporters reached Mr. Atiku, he expressed surprise that we knew about his meeting with President Jonathan. He asserted that the idea of his heading an interim government did not come up during the long discussion with the president.

Mr. Atiku said he had retired to bed when he was woken up and told that President Jonathan had come to see him, adding that the president was already waiting in his living room.

After denying that he was asked to head an interim government, the former vice president admitted that Mr. Jonathan tried to prevail on him to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He disclosed that he rejected the invitation outright.

According to Mr. Atiku, the president also discussed the ongoing war against Boko Haram insurgents, asking for support for Nigerian troops fighting in the area. He said they also discussed the possibility of displaced Nigerians returning to the areas that have been recaptured from Boko Haram.

Asked by our reporter whether he thought President Jonathan was interested in allowing elections to hold on March 28, the former vice president hesitated before stating that he would not wish to speculate, but he said the president’s body language did not reveal that he was interested in the polls that are scheduled to hold in two weeks.

The secret meeting between Mr. Jonathan and former VP Atiku has caused unease among some APC stalwarts. A few hours after the meeting, a faction of Mr. Atiku’s original political organization, the Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), announced their endorsement of President Jonathan.

In his telephone interview with SaharaReporters, Mr. Atiku disclosed that he was opposed to the formation of an interim government. He stated that when former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, set up an interim national government in 1993, the dictator offered him a position in the government through the late General Shehu Yar’Adua (ret.). He said he rejected the position, adding that it was eventually given to a Lagos politician Dapo Sarumi.

Asked further about the substance of his conversation with Mr. Jonathan, the former vice president said advised the president to ensure that the elections were free and fair and devoid of the bloodshed that trailed the 2011 general elections.

PoliticsInec Discovers 555 Pvcs Belonging To The Dead In Ogun by jjamani(op): 11:15pm On Mar 02, 2015
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has discovered 555 permanent voters cards belonging to dead people in Ogun state.

The electoral body said the permanent voters cards were brought to the state for registered voters.

INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ogun State, Timothy Ibitoye, said the PVCs belonged to deceased people collated from the 20 local governments in the State.

“We had gone to all the local government areas in the state and we asked our officers to write out the names of those who were yet to collect their PVCs. We were able to get the number from this collation. The community leaders also assisted us in identifying those who have died since the last registration of voters, when the lists were pasted.”

The REC while speaking today in Abeokuta added that he has already gotten 1,370,340 permanent voters cards from Abuja. Ibitoye said the electoral body had distributed 860,076 representing 63 percent of registered voters in the state.

He gave the correct total number of registered voters in the state as 1,795,794 as opposed to the reported 1,829,534.

The Ogun INEC says it still expects 425,454 permanent voters cards belonging to people registered in Ogun State from the INEC head quarters in Abuja.

The State has the lowest collection rate of permanent voters card in the country.

PoliticsBoko Haram Release Shocking Images Of Child Soldier Training Camp by jjamani(op): 9:31pm On Jan 27, 2015
Children displaced as a result of Boko Haram attack in the northeast region of Nigeria, attend a class at Maikohi secondary school camp for internally displaced persons (IDP) in Yola, Adamawa State January 13, 2015.
Afolabi Sotunde/Reuters

A media group associated with the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram has published two images which reveal a military training camp for children in northeastern Nigeria.

The organisation, al-Urwa al-Wuthaqa, shows the children dressed in dark clothing with their heads covered by garments. In one photo, the children are aiming their guns while in another they are posing with the weapons.

The Long War Journal claims that both young girls and boys are present in the photos, while some are holding AK47 assault rifles, others are holding cutouts of weapons.

According to Max Abrahms, professor of political science at Northwestern University and member at the Council of Foreign Relations, Boko Haram uses child soldiers in order to boost its membership numbers.

“Terrorist organisations have power in numbers. The more members in the group, the greater its capability. There is a correlation between the membership size of a terrorist group and its ability to inflict bloodshed,” he said

.

“Terrorist groups will often try to amass the most members as possible even if they’re young boys or girls.”

Andrew Noakes, coordinator of the Nigeria Security Network, says the group are struggling to recruit fighters, having “started alienating local people across northeast Nigeria with their brutal tactics”.

“To fill the gap they’ve turned to recruiting children and recruiting in neighbouring countries,” he says. “Boko Haram often uses its child soldiers and other forced recruits to form the first wave of an attack, before sending in the more experienced fighters to finish off operations.”

Abrahms also believes that because the group has ambitions of creating an eternal caliphate, in the same vein as ISIS, it indoctrinates children in the hope that its message will be continued by the young soldiers.

“[ISIS] has ambitions in building up a caliphate for eternity. I think Boko Haram shares this aspiration certainly in Nigeria and the indoctrination of youth is important not just for fielding an army against the Nigerian military, but also breeding a future generation of like-minded sympathisers.”

A number of other terrorist organisations have resorted to using child soldiers to boost their numbers. ISIS has previously released videos of children training at a combat camp, where they are seen being beaten by their instructor and taught how to use a gun. Uganda’s Lord’s Resistance Army and al-Qaeda have been known to use child soldiers also.

As the Nigerian presidential election on 14 February inches closer, Boko Haram have continued to wage their insurgency against Nigerian authorities in the regions that remain under a state of emergency – Yobe, Borno and Adamawa – in the country’s northeast.

Hundreds of its fighters are battling government forces in Borno state’s capital, Maiduguri, while they have captured the town of Monguno, located approximately 85 miles (135km) from the embattled city.

The attacks took place just a day after Nigerian President and leader of the People’s Democratic Party, Jonathan Goodluck, paid a visit to the city as he continues his campaign against leader of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) party, Muhammadu Buhari.

According to the Council on Foreign Relations, the terror group killed over 10,000 people in 2014 and they have already reportedly killed over 2,000 people in the first month of 2015 following a series of mass killings in the town of Baga, in the state of Borno.

PoliticsOshiomhole Tells Jonathan Not To Expect Edo People’s Votes by jjamani(op): 1:47pm On Jan 26, 2015
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State has advised the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan, against banking on the votes of people of the state. He stressed that Edo people will not re-elect the President in next month’s presidential election owing to his abandonment of the state.

According to Oshiomhole, President Jonathan did not fulfill his promise to contribute to the development of the South-South state, despite enjoying 95 per cent of votes of Edo people for his election in 2011.

Speaking separately at the All Progressives Congress (APC) rallies in Ehor and Igueben towns in Uhunmwode Igueben Local Government Area on Saturday, the governor explained that in spite of several letters to the Federal Government to assist the state on erosion challenges, the Jonathan administration neglected Edo after persuading them to vote for him as their brother in 2011.

Stressing that the people of the state are wiser now and would “vote the President out on February 14 for abandoning them,” he recalled that “The last time we voted for President Jonathan, He got 95 per cent of the total votes in Edo State. Yet, I cannot think of any meaningful thing he has done in the state.

“Last year, President Jonathan gave N2bn each to some PDP states even where he lost election to deal with erosion. Those that don’t have flood erosion were given money for desertification but we in Edo State that voted for him got nothing. I am not lamenting this. We have learnt from it and are determined not to repeat our mistakes,” he said.

Oshiomhole accused the federal government of insensitivity by failing to prosecute “those indicted” in the ill-fated immigration recruitment exercise in 2014, adding that it “is a clear indication that President Goodluck Jonathan did not care about the welfare of the Nigerian youths.

“People lost their lives. Last week, the relatives of those who died in Benin were protesting to us that the Federal Government has not given them even the jobs they promised.”

Expressing confidence that Nigerians will vote for change at all levels in next month’s elections, the Governor assured that “I believe that with Maj. Gen. Buhari, Nigeria will be in a safer hand beginning with security.”

Travel10 Countries Where Personal Safety Is Most Secure In 2014 by jjamani(op): 10:01pm On Dec 29, 2014
When considering the health of a country, reports often focus on the financial well-being of a nation’s citizens, or perhaps some will look at specific crime rates per capita. But the Social Progress Index (SPI) compiles the data slightly differently. The SPI looks at fifty-two different indicators which represent the quality of life for those living in the specific countries. One of these indicators studies Basic Human Needs, and it’s broken down into several smaller categories – including Personal Safety.

How safe are the people who live in a nation? What are the biggest concerns for the residents? Are women able to walk down the street at night without fear of being attacked? By looking at the Personal Safety Index, you can get an idea of the quality of life for those who live in a given country. The higher the index, the safer the country is for everyone, including tourists.

So which countries are the safest? In some of the safest nations, the crime rates are so low that you’re more likely to be mauled by a polar bear than robbed by a drug dealer on the street. In fact, in some of these countries, they actually suggest that tourists can hitchhike or sleep in their cars with absolutely no fear of being hurt. Hard to imagine places like that still exist in the world today, isn’t it?

Well, they do! The following are the 10 nations that most closely guard their citizens’ personal security.
10. Slovenia – Personal Safety Index: 91.39

It should say something that Wikitravel actually suggests car camping as an option when staying in Slovenia. They suggest it as an affordable option, and say that you probably won’t be bothered too much as long as you stay out of private lands. Of course, it’s also suggested that you remain cautious at night, especially in the bigger cities and in crowded bars. But aside from common sense concerns, you can be pretty sure you’re personal safety is well-secured here, with a personal safety index of 91.39.
9. Canada – Personal Safety Index: 91.58

Overall, Canada's personal safety and satisfaction ratings are high. For instance, in 2009, 83% of Canadians said that they weren't afraid to be home alone at night, and 90% felt safe enough to walk their neighborhood at night as well. And that's not just blind faith in humanity: The country really is safe. Crime rate in Canada is the lowest it's been since 1972. In 2012, the crime rate fell by three percent from the previous year. Not to mention, that the homicide rate is 1.73 murders per 100,000; to put that in perspective, the United State's rate is 4.80 per 100,000 people.
8. Austria – Personal Safety Index: 91.67

Robbery, assault, and car crime in Austria are among the lowest in the developed world. And while in many 'safe' nations the safety doesn't extend to the larger cities, in Austria's case it does. Vienna is ranked as the 6th safest city in the world (of 215 cities studied). It's so safe in fact, that travel sites mention that in the countryside, you might be able to find a room for a night by knocking on doors. In most countries, where crime is more commonplace, the idea of walking up to a stranger's door and asking if you could stay there for the evening became outmoded more than fifty years ago! The fact that this is a legitimate option in Austria speaks volumes about how trustworthy and kind the locals are
7. Czech Republic – Personal Safety Index: 92.08

Vision of Humanity recently ranked the Czech Republic as the fifth most peaceful nation in the world. The factors they looked at include political stability, homicides, violent crime, and the number of police and security present. In fact, violent crimes are rare, and the majority of crimes that do occur are most commonly crimes of opportunity. As with most major tourist destinations, there are always those who prey upon the unprepared. Rarely, if ever, do these sorts of crimes turn violent within the borders of the Czech Republic.
6. Japan – Personal Safety Index: 92.33

Crime in Japan has been consistently declining in recent years. In fact, 2014 marks the 11th straight year that the crime rate has declined. In 2013, the number of murders and attempted murders dropped 8.8%. Sure, as mentioned before, pickpocketing and other petty crimes do exist in high-traffic, tourist locations. With most places, the most likely locations for crime are the big cities, crowded areas, as well as in nightclubs and bars where crimes such as sexual assault can still take place. However, it’s worth noting that the general crime rate in Japan is still well below the U.S national average.
5. Denmark – Personal Safety Index: 92.56

Copenhagen, while a very large city, is one of the safest cities in the world according to Tripadvisor. Even with an increase in protests (many tied to the Occupy Wall Street movement in the United States), manifestations tend to remain relatively peaceful and nonviolent. Men and women can feel safe walking through the streets without having to fear being harassed, and tourists are generally safe to travel around the country without any concerns. The biggest crime-related problems in Denmark come from pickpockets (typical of any big city or tourist destination) and a few small terrorist cells mostly stemming from the 2005 publication of the “Mohammed cartoons” and the reprinting of those cartoons in 2008. However, the threat is mainly against individuals and businesses associated with the publication of these cartoons rather than unaffiliated nationals, tourists or travelers.
4. Switzerland – Personal Safety Index: 92.75

It’s not surprising that Switzerland is one of the safest countries in the world. Women have no trouble traveling alone, and the police try to be as unobtrusive as possible (with the exception of football games in some major cities where hooligan crime may take place). However, the police are very serious about traffic offenses, and thus many drivers are well-disciplined, which makes it safe for pedestrian traffic. Also, Switzerland has very strong Good Samaritan laws that make it a civic duty to help those in need (as long as it doesn’t entail endangering yourself). The refusal to help someone in need is actually punishable by law, thus people are very willing and ready to help if the need arises.
3. Norway – Personal Safety Index: 92.75

In Norway, the greatest dangers one might face is not with criminals, but with nature. Many people, especially tourists, die each year in the mountains or on the sea – usually after being warned of such dangers. Walking on glaciers, car crashes with moose or other large animals, running into problems in the harsh mountains, and even run-ins with polar bears are typically the greatest threats one faces while in Norway. In fact, in Svalbard, you should never travel outside Longyearbyen without someone carrying a weapon. But when you look at the crime rates in Norway, well – there's little to worry about there. Even in the “bad” parts of Oslo, violent crime is very low. While pickpockets do exist, especially in urban areas, it's still nothing like in larger European cities or parts of the U.S. Overall, Norway is an extremely safe country, as long as you don't mess with nature.
2.Sweden – Personal Safety Index: 93.35

It should come as no surprise that Norway's neighbor, Sweden, would also make this list. After all, the Scandinavian countries are known for being some of the safest in the world (and they did show up a lot on this list, come to think of it). The main risks in Sweden include alcohol-related violence, petty theft and mugging. But even those risks are relatively low, especially when compared to other places in the world. Much like Norway, the largest risks come from nature, and they include blizzards in the mountains, freezing conditions and icy roads throughout the long winters. After all, most of Sweden is below freezing in the winter. But keep warm, practice safe habits, and you should be just fine.
1. Iceland – Personal Safety Index: 93.45

It would almost seem that crime is lowest where it's coldest, and if that's the case, it comes as no surprise that a country with the word “Ice” it its name would be the safest country in the world. And in fact, Iceland does rank highest in personal safety. Like others on the list, the greatest dangers in Iceland are found in nature. And like the other places, many times it comes down to people not reading the warning signs posted everywhere. But as far as the people go, Icelanders are some of the friendliest folks you'll meet. Need a ride? Hitchhiking is one way to get around the country, and most drivers are willing to pick you up, and it's safe to travel this way (well, except in rural areas with few drivers since the weather can take you out). When the biggest risks you face come from Mother Nature, rather than from people, you know you're in a safe place.
