After taking a short break from the public following the heat generated by his careless statement about the Igbos in Lagos, the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has returned with some potentially controversial utterances on the relationship of the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) and a former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. At an event marking Governor Fashola’s 2,900th day in office, which was attended by former governors, former deputy governors, serving and former commissioners, Oba Akiolu, spoke, amongst other things, against those working to cause disaffection between Gen. Buhari and Asiwaju. “All Lagos residents should pray the labour of Tinubu should not be in vain. A lot of things have been happening now. Some people have been telling Buhari all sorts of things. Awujale and I have decided to meet Buhari because Lagos and South West states must benefit from the Buhari administration. The monarch accused some alleged fifth columnists as working against the choice of the president-elect Muhammadu Buhari, some of whom he said were seated right in the audience. The same people, he contended, have started pitting the duo of Tinubu and Buhari against each other the same way they set the former against Fashola. “People, who are now telling Buhari all sorts of things, are sycophants. They did not want Buhari to emerge winner in the election. These people know themselves. When it gets to a stage, I will name them one after the other. I am not afraid of human beings,” Akiolu said. It was reported that it took the intervention of Governor Fashola, who tactically calmed Oba Akiolu down as he threatened to name those he had alluded to in parables as moles in their midst. http://poligist.com/kabiye-again-i-will-soon-name-those-trying-to-cause-rift-between-buhari-tinubu-oba-of-lagos/

Spokesperson of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Mr. Olisa Metuh has exonerated the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) from any blame for the loss to the opposition All Progressives Congress ( APC) at the last general elections. He rather inferred that the blame should be put on Ekiti State Governor, Chief Ayo Fayose, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode and other hate campaigners including First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan who led hate campaigns and deployed hate speeches against the APC candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari during the election campaigns. These individuals, in his view, were busy making hate speeches instead of selling the good deeds of President Jonathan Mr. Metuh stated that not only was the party headquarters completely sidelined, it was starved of funds to run an effective campaign. He revealed that because some persons were allowed to run a hate campaign against Mr. Buhari, they made the former military ruler who was the APC Presidential candidate more popular. “The PDP campaign was characterized by hate campaigns against Mr. Buhari with little emphasis on the achievement of Mr. Jonathan. Mr. Metuh stated, “In 2003 President Obasanjo ran against Odumegwu Ojukwu, while latePresident Yar’adua also ran against him in 2007. According to Metuh “If the PDP had run its campaign based on hate speech against the Ikemba Nnewi, he would have won by a landslide in the whole of the South East,” he said http://poligist.com/blame-fayose-fani-kayode-other-hate-campaigners-for-jonathans-defeat-olisa-metuh/

After an unsuccessful bid in 2010 to acquire Arsenal Football Club, Africa’s richest man, Nigerian Aliko Dangote has renewed interest in taking over one of the English Premier Clubs. The 58-year-old Nigerian billionaire, who is worth over an estimated €13.5 billion – which makes him Africa’s richest man – says he is still keen on buying Arsenal. “I still hope, one day at the right price, that I’ll buy the team,” Dangote told Bloomberg Business. “I might buy it, not at a ridiculous price but a price that the owners won’t want to resist. I know my strategy.” Dangote, who has made his fortune through various operations including cement manufacturing, sugar supply and oil investments, says that he will concentrate on expanding his own business before launching a new offer for Arsenal. “We have $16bn-worth [€14bn] of investments in the next few years. Right now I want to take my own business to a certain level. Once I finish on that trajectory, then maybe an offer will follow,” he continued. Dangote is an Arsenal fan but has criticised Arsene Wenger, claiming that the 65-year-old “needs to change his style a bit” and warning that the club “need new direction”. |

Aminu Tambuwal as speaker of the House of Representative. Close ally of Tambuwal and Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Finance, Honourable, Abdulmumin Jibrin has formally declared his ambition to take over from his good friend as speaker of the House of Representatives. Tambuwal, having secured the governorship ticket for the APC in Sokoto State, has bid a goodbye to the House of Representatives. Addressing journalists in Abuja on his ambition, Jibrin said he was in the race to take the parliament to a pedestal that it would be at par with other parliaments across the world. Jibrin, who is the first Reps member to formally declare his interest in the position of Speaker, stated that the country was witnessing a change, stressing that the House of Representatives must have a leadership that could drive it towards “deepening the political change.” The lawmaker, who hails from Kano, explained that he was presenting himself for Speaker based on the experience he had garnered from 2011 when he first came to the House. The youthful politician, who is an alumnus of University of Abuja, Ahmadu Bello University, Harvard, London and the Swiss Business School, Zurich stated that the House Committee on Finance under his leadership had recorded significant improvement in several areas including but not limited to Internally Generated Revenue, reduction in domestic borrowing, tax compliance by corporate bodies and providing a suitable medium term expenditure framework. He pledged that if elected Speaker, he would pursue a three-point agenda, which, according to him, are transparency, strengthening of the institutions of the House and continuity in legislative business. He said the March 28 presidential election had shown that Nigerian democracy was growing, hence, the need to consolidate it to set a great example for other Africans. As many may have been wondering what a former CBN governor, Prof Charles Soludo must have done or said to have attracted attacks from the the top aides and associates of president Jonathan. Here is the gist. A few days ago Soludo wrote a long article entitled, “Buhari vs Jonathan: Beyond the Election” , in which he lashed out on the programmes of the leading political parties in Nigeria, the PDP and the APC, and their presidential candidates, the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. On the PDP and President Jonathan’s re-election bid, Soludo made the following comments amongst others: 1, Today, the combined domestic and external debt of the Federal Government is in excess of $40 billion 2, Abandoned capital projects littered all over the country amount to over $50 billion 3, Poverty incidence and unemployment rate at the moment have attained the worst records in the history of Nigeria 4, The government’s economic team is very weak, dominated by self-interested and self-conflicted group of traders and businessmen, and so-called economic team meetings have been nothing but showbiz time 5, Transformation Agenda is an empty slogan On the APC and Gen Buhari’s presidential aspiration, Soludo made the following comments amongst others: 1, The APC manifesto contains some good principles and wish-lists, but as a blue print for Nigeria’s security and prosperity, it is largely hollow. 2, Most people who want to vote for Buhari do not know the specifics of what he would offer or how Nigeria would be different under him. 3, I have not heard anything from the APC or Buhari regarding the national conference report or what kind of federalism they envisage for Nigeria. 4, The APC should stop the joke and be realistic on their promises of creating 20,000 jobs per state in the first year, totalling a mere 720,000 jobs for a country where the new entrants into the labour market per annum exceed two million 5, Buhari and his team must realize that they do not yet have a coherent, credible agenda that is consistent with the fundamentals of the economy currently The former CBN governor concluded his commentary by advising both parties and their presidential candidates to re-work their programmes to conform with the reality of existence of many Nigerians in order to attract more voters and emphasised that Nigeria must survive and prosper beyond Buhari or Jonathan. Though Soludo clearly did not not spare any party or candidate in his critical piece, he has received barrage of hits from presidential aides such as the minister of finance and head of media and publicity of the president Jonathan’s campaign amongst others who have found the former CBN governor’s opinions on the government too harsh and needless at this time. The question is must the presidency react angrily to every public opinion especially when it concerns two parties? www.poligist.com

Chinese Telecoms services giant, Huawei has cancelled its street lamp poles outdoor contract with a Lagos-based outdoor advertising agency, Touchpoint over illegal deployment of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign posters on poles paid for by the company. Huawei had secured the old tollgate location by Motorways, Ojota for a period of one year and had paid the mandatory Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency fee for same. Touch Point in a statement said ‘Our client, Huawei cancelled the contract saying it was due to the breach by the PDP to run a parallel campaign on poles solely reserved for Huawei’’. The statement went on further: ‘Elections should not be used as an avenue to disrupt the honest business of hardworking Nigerians. There are procedures for deployment of items on street lamp poles and, going through this crude means is not only damaging, it is unfair, inconsiderate and above all illegal by a political party that seemingly prides itself on the rule of law. I have spoken with my lawyers and we are considering legal action over this inconsiderate action by the PDP and its agents’’. www.poligist.com

Some outgoing members of the British Parliament popularly known as the MPs will be helping themselves to new iPads and laptops as they stand down from the parliament at the next election. And the request for the latest technology gadgets, which they will be claiming as part of parliamentary expenses, will be covered by the British taxpayers. Report shows that in the last six months over ten MPs have claimed laptops and tablets on expenses, including Labour’s Tom Watson – who claimed for two – Siobhain McDonagh, Michael McCann, Huw Irranca-Davies, Roberta Blackman-Woods and Fabian Hamilton, and Tories Theresa Villiers, Nick Hurd, Keith Simpson, Glyn Davies and Tobias Ellwood. If you assume that it is only in Nigeria or some African countries you hear that political leaders are feeding fat at the expense of the helpless masses, you will be surprised about what happens on the other side. Perhaps we are “Smarter” on this side though… www.poligist.com

An Abuja-based politician (name withheld) faced an embarrassing moment when his very expensive automobile, Mercedes Benz G-Wagon refused to wag or move on a highway. The visibly disappointed politician had to seek the help of a nonprofessional technician popular known as road-side mechanic and support of a rickety towing-vehicle to pull the multi-million naira car from its immobile position. While many Nigerians had called on the government for necessary support in skill acquisition and empowerment for the road-side mechanics, some politicians, perhaps including the owner of the faulty vehicle, have always overlooked such important request. But ironically the political leaders can turn to the semiskilled mechanics in a bad moment like this. www.poligist.com

The fight between the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) and the PDP governorship candidate in Lagos state, Mr. Jimi Agbaje took a new twist as the campaign postal of Mr Agbaje on illegal space is shared widely on the internet. Mr Agbaje had accused the government agency of destroying posters of the opposition and preventing them from acquiring advertising spaces because LASAA is controlled by the APC, the ruling government in Lagos state. Though LASAA had refuted the allegation and showed evidence of posters of candidates of different parties displayed on permitted spaces and billboards across the state, some suspected supporters of the APC have refused to let the dust raised by the matter settle. To further prove a point against Agbaje’s claims, they have produced picture of the posters of the PDP candidate pasted on a space that clearly carries the warning sign of LASAA against illegal bill posting in Lagos state. www.poligist.com
