DEMANDS RIVERS ATTORNEY-GENERAL PROSECUTE PRO-WIKE GROUP FOR PERJURY THE Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has applauded the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the timely release of the Rivers State voters' register in preparation for the conduct of the August 9th local government election. In a Press Release this Sunday signed the CUPP national Spokesperson, Comrade Mark Adebayo, the Coalition stated that "We, as an opposition Coalition, wish to salute the dutifulness of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the expeditious compliance with the Supreme Court judgement by the timely release of Rivers State Voters' Register in preparation towards the local government election already fixed for August 9th, 2025. "By doing this, inspite of distractions by political rabble rousers who are hellbent on suffocating democracy at grassroots levels in the state. The INEC has proven its institutional integrity by doing the needful in defence of democracy and the rule of law. This is highly commendable and we celebrate the decisiveness of the Commission in doing what is right, legal, and constitutional in obedience to a legitimate Court order. We wholeheartedly congratulate the leadership of the Commission for building people's confidence in our democratic process by this action". "At the same time we call on the the Attorney-General to begin the process of prosecuting the pro-Wike group trying to scuttle the implementation of the Supreme Court's Judgment on the forthcoming local government election by all criminal means"

Says Plot To Declare Hon. Ikenga's Seat Vacant By The Same Group Dead Before Arrival The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, has raised the alarm with regard to an alleged plan by those it describes as "pro-Wike group" to scuttle the national convention of the People's Democratic Party, PDP and also frustrate its primaries in order to prevent the party from fielding presidential and other candidates in the 2027 general elections. The Coalition also alleged the same group of orchestrating illegal attempts to declare vacant the seat of Honorable Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, the Honorable representing Ideato federal constituency in the House of Representatives who also doubles as opposition lawmakers' Spokesperson. CUPP made the submission in a statement jointly signed by Comrade Mark Adebayo, its National Spokesperson, and High Chief Peter Ameh, the National Secretary. The group said: "An evil agenda being cooked by a pro-Wike group to make sure that the People's Democratic Party, PDP, does not have a presidential candidate, governorship, national and state assembly candidates to present to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for the 2027 general elections has been exposed to us. This antidemocratic agenda is being orchestrated by groups loyal to the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, who have vowed to destroy the PDP from within and stop the Party from contesting in the 2027 general elections. "There are deliberate plots to ensure that the PDP is permanently and fatally crippled as to render it useless by political cliques determined to to turn Nigeria into a one-Party state. This agenda has been on for a while now. We agree with the submission of the immediate past Governor of Kaduna state, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, that the crises in various opposition political Parties are being contrived by some political foxes working on an evil agenda to kill multiparty democracy in Nigeria. "We call on Nigerians to be very vigilant and resist all the satanic schemes to turn Nigeria into a banana Republic where only one Party can dominate the political space. The pro-Wike group is a malignant cancer in Nigeria's democratic space that must be curtailed at all costs. "This same group is currently perfecting their evil agenda to get a pliable Judge who can declare vacant the House of Representatives seat of Honorable Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, representing Ideato Federal Constituency of Imo state vacant for extremely untenable reasons unknown to law. All Nigerians know that the only conditions recognized by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended are, to wit, death, resignation, or a successful recall process initiated by the concerned constituents. Any other procedure is unknown to law and fraudulent and of no legal effects whatsoever. Therefore, this vendetta scheme against Honorable Ikenga is dead before arrival. "In their desperation to get a pliable Judge to hear their ridiculous case that they secretly filed, they withdrew the first one they had filed at a Federal High Court in Abuja and filed the exact same case at another FHC in Abuja with exactly the same prayers simply because they realized that the first Judge wasn't going to play their fraudulent game with them no matter how big the inducement. We do know that there are still honorable and incorruptible Judges in this country who will never partake of any evil agenda by desperate politicians whose stock-in-trade is to corrupt Nigeria's judiciary with stolen wealth. We know that their days are numbered as the law will catch up with them sooner than later. "We call on Nigerian Judges to be wary of corrupt politicians filing frivolous and fraudulent cases before them just to waste the time of the court. Honorable Ikenga remains highly popular in Ideato Federal Constituency, Imo state as a whole and Nigeria in general due to his selfless advocacy for the less privileged Nigerians irrespective of creed, ethnicity or gender. Therefore, there is none of his constituents who is involved in the fake case being peddled before courts in Abuja. Ideato people stand in firm solidarity with Honorable Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and opposition political Parties are standing unshakably with him, too."

…Says Former Governor's Camp Doesn't Want Implementation Of Supreme Court Judgment On LGAs The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has joined voices condemning the way former Governor Nyesom Wike's camp has been handling the political crisis in the state, describing it as "failed coup attempts by the camp loyal to the FCT Minister and a former Governor of the state." The Coalition made its views known in a Press Release signed by its National Spokesperson, Comrade Mark Adebayo, on Wednesday. Inter alia, CUPP stated: "It is unfortunate that those fomenting violent crisis in Rivers State do not realize how dangerous it is to the current democratic dispensation because if the crisis comes to a head, it has the potential to disrupt the current Republic and reverse the country's democratic gains of almost three decades. "There have been a series of coup attempts against the current Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Governor Similayi Fubara, as being instigated by the FCT Minister and the state's immediate past Governor and his political camp. This has led to extreme frustration due to the failed coup attempts by the camp loyal to the FCT Minister. "The desperation to impeach Governor Fubara has failed so far and will continue to fail because it is not only anti-democratic, but also against the wishes of the overwhelming majority of the good people of Rivers State who have remained unequivocal in their support for Governor Similayi Fubara from Day One of his administration. “Rivers people across the state, irrespective of ethno-religious and political affiliations, have remained solidly behind Governor Fubara in collective solidarity to defend the mandate they freely gave to him as the state's Executive Governor in 2023. "The Wike camp also doesn't want the implementation of the Supreme Court judgement on the state's local governments as it is plotting against the local government areas' election budget presentation. Their tactic is to block the presentation of the Appropriation Bill so that the Governor will not have access to resources to conduct election in the Local Government Areas of the state. "We wish to alert Nigerians and the international community to the fact that those orchestrating the Rivers State crisis on the prompting of the FCT Minister and other anti-democratic elements constitute a significant danger to the current democratic dispensation by their disruptive extra-constitutional activities aimed at throwing the state into the darkness of unmitigated crisis that may spread across the country and consume our democracy. "We call on the international community and all well-meaning Nigerians to caution these enemies of democracy and let Rivers State be at peace. They are seriously frustrated that all their shenanigans to impeach the Governor have failed woefully so far and will continue to fail. Therefore, they want to cripple the state financially by not passing the Appropriation Bill into law to allow the state government to have access to funds critical to the development of the state and to conduct election into the LGAs. "Their actions are very injurious to the interests of Rivers State and its people. In general terms, their antidemocratic shenanigans are injurious to the democratic stability of Nigeria. Wike and his cabal of political jobbers must let Rivers State breathe as they have already pushed the Rivers people to their utmost limit.”

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Prince Adewole Adebayo has declared that Nigerian young people form "the demographic powerhouse that has the capacity to influence the outcome of elections in the country" and urged them "to deploy such lethal advantage positively during the next series of election in the country". He said this on Wednesday through a speech delivered on his behalf by Comrade Mark Adebayo, the national Spokesperson for the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, on the occasion of a Youth empowerment program organized by Isoko Nation Youths which held this Wednesday March 5th, 2025 at the Oleh Campus of the Delta State University titled "Agriculture as a catalyst for economic empowerment" and "Harnessing the power of youth in politicaladvocacy". The speech which was delivered extempore on his behalf by Mark Adebayo reads in part "This is a creative idea by young people with an initiative that is bound to impact positively on the larger majority of young people in this country beyond the Isoko nation. Agriculture is a vital economic indicator for the economic mainstay of any nation that supports its young populations to participate in it. "On the sub topic of 'Harnessing the power of youth in political advocacy', I dare say that, beyond political advocacy, Nigerian youths constitute the demographic powerhouse that has the capacity to influence the outcome of elections in the country. I urge you to deploy such lethal advantage positively during the next series of election in the country to ensure that candidates with the best proven pedigrees to run the country well emerge across board". "Beyond political advocacy, Nigerian youths cannot afford to be sleeping partners in the re-engineering efforts to reposition Nigeria towards real development. Nigeria's young people are important in activating Nigeria's indigenous technological takeoff. No matter how good or competent a presidential or governorship candidate is, no matter how wonderful their manifestoes look like, he or she will fail except they partner with the youths. "The Isoko nation, from pre-independence, has provided economic empowerment for Nigeria through palm produce and farming that contributed significantly to Nigeria's export economy long before the discovery of oil. And today, the Isoko nation is also an oil producing community in Delta State. Therefore, in terms of Isoko nation's economic contributions to Nigeria, you are an economic majority". The Delta State Governor, who was the chairman of the occasion was represented by the Honorable Commissioner for Youth Development, Barrister ThankGod Harry, Trakiriowei and other members of the state's executive council. The government announced series of support for the Isoko youths. Prince Adewole Adebayo also promised to support their agricultural initiative which Comrade Mark said would be communicated to them later.

Akinwumi Adesina @ 65: A Revolutionary Strategist For Africa's Imperative Sociopolitical Zeitgeist By Mark Adebayo "The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves". - Ray Kroc He exudes grace and confidence. The kind of grace that emanates from a pristine destiny of divine assignment. His life, his background, his education, his intelligence, his inimitable integrity, and his disciplined commitment to excellence stand him out as a unique enigma in the constellation of Africa's best. Imagine him as the leader of any country in Africa! His trademark ever-present smiles belly his stout intellectual stature. Imbued with a sharp academic mind, Professor Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina exemplifies awesomesauce image of a go-getter with no room for excuses or failure. He always gets the job done even under the most austere circumstances. As Mark Antony said of Julius Caesar that "He hath brought many captives home to Rome", so has Akinwumi brought many laurels home to Africa, Nigeria and his esteemed family. His never-say-die spirit has been his personal precept since his younger days when he had developed a studious academic discipline that made him the most brilliant student of his generation. At the University of Ife, later Obafemi Awolowo University, which, incidentally, is my almamater too, he beat the historic mystery of first class degree by becoming the first student to attain that feat at his economics department. His life is always about first class delivery wherever fate directs him. He proceeded to Purdue University, USA, for his PhD where he won the Outstanding PhD thesis award in Agricultural Economics in 1988. His life has always been about the pursuit of excellence. Only the best is good enough for Akinwumi Adesina. An administrator par excellence, he works with ingenious capacity to solve the knottiest of challenges. His integrity is unassailable. It is neither faked nor embellished. Akinwumi does not just work for governments and institutions - he works for humanity. He serves humanity. His revolutionary mindset enables him to achieve the seemingly impossible wherever he serves, and to reach heights hitherto considered unattainable by many. Imagine if him as a leader of a country in Africa! Peter Drucker once wrote that "Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things". Professor Akinwumi Adesina exemplifies these two qualities geometric quantities. As a matter of fact, Africa has not been lucky to have good managers as leaders presiding in most African countries which is why the continent continually suffers from systemic anarchy and complex components of aggravated crises. A bad manager at the helm of a country as leader would automatically kill the potential of that country to develop. Our major bane in Africa! Akinwumi has consistently demonstrated exceptional managerial and leadership excellence everywhere he has had the opportunity to serve. From 2011 to 2015 that he was Nigeria's agriculture minister, he revolutionized the country's agriculture sector with unprecedented reforms. He ingeniously developed and religiously implemented the electronic wallet system that significantly decimated the corruption regime that reigned supreme in the fertilizer value chain and he made sure that agricultural equipment at highly subsidized rates reached the deserving farmers who were the real end-users including dedicated mobile phone system to track distribution, inter alia. The result was astounding! Close to twenty million farmers were positively impacted with life changing transformations. It was the first time that Nigerian farmers experienced direct intervention by government to ease their burden. It was the first time ever that Nigerian consumers of farm produce became aware of a ministry of agriculture and what its mandate was. Never had there been such a direct impact on Nigeria's agricultural potential that tremendously benefitted farmers and the general citizenry. Imagine, for one moment, if he was the President! He carries himself with a finesse of character that all great leaders in history possessed - a midas touch of leadership prestidigitation that brings to life what is dead in the care of others. Akinwumi Adesina raises leadership bars exponentially and then goes ahead to break that bar, raises it again and breaks it again and again. This is the reason why Akin, as he is fondly called by his friends and seniors, remains unbeatable in the quest for excellence wherever he is in action. He is a superlative administrator par excellence. Imagine Akin as the leader of your country! His leadership as President of the African Development Bank almost ten years ago has skyrocketed that Bank's capital base thereby bumping up shareholders' confidence in the Bank as never since its establishment 61 years ago. Akinwumi Adesina rallied the 80-member countries of the Bank to boost the Bank's general capital in 2019 from $93 billion to a whopping $208 billion. The African Development Bank, under Akinwumi's presidency was particularly instrumental to preventing an unprecedented catastrophe hitting Africa through a direct intervention to the tune of $3 billion Covid-19 Social Bond, followed by a Crisis Response Facility of $10 billion! This critical and timely intervention was fundamentally responsible for saving Africa from the devastating effects of the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic. This was a major factor in how Africa managed the Covid-19 crises much better than the so-called first world countries who were caught napping when the pandemic imploded globally. All of these happened under the capable leadership of Akinwumi Adesina. Imagine Africa as a country and he as the President! A few years ago, I met a Zambian friend of mine in Madrid. Being of the same academics discipline of political anthropology, we always discussed a lot about Africa with regard to its politics and leadership. During a casual conversation, he said "Mark, Africa has snatched Prof from you guys". I asked "Which Prof?" He replied "Akinwomy(sic) of course! I can't understand why Nigeria is underutilizing that man." I replied that "Africa only borrowed him, and when you borrow something you have to return it, isn't it? We'll get our Akinwumi back and put him to better use back home in due course." Akinwumi Adesina is an academic and administrative genius, a giant in the arena of creative leadership. A patriot of inimitable integrity and unblemished records of service. A visionary of gargantuan dimensions. He is a cross-generational hope harbinger for the Africa of our dreams that the old, the gen-Z and the coming generations can relate with because he represents all that there aspirations entail. Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina is a Promethean leadership revolutionary that every country in Africa requires in order to experience the ultrarapid socioeconomic and technological revolutions that can kickstart Africa on the march to stupendous all-round development. He is incorruptible, disciplined, consistent, patriotic, focused, competent, and committed to everything excellent and noble. He is as modest as they come, unlike many ostentatious African leaders who are only in power to mismanage their countries' resources to satisfy their insatiable appetite for avarice and autocratic mentality. His integrity is so spotless that Akin doesn't require any detergents or 'kongi' soap and water to lauder his image. His noble persona is self-evident - a product of decades of disciplined commitment to the highest ideals of justice, equity, decency, selflessness, and humanity. He is devoid of any baggage of self-contradictory image. He needs no mendacious publicity gimmick to become relevant to the most sacred aspirations of the regular African who has been denied the opportunity to experience sterling leadership over the years. Just imagine if this guy was your country's leader! Professor Akinwumi Ayodeji Adesina is his parents' biggest gift to Nigeria, Nigeria's greatest gift to Africa, and Africa's most treasured gift to the world. As he clocks 65 next month February 6th and completes his second tenure as AfDB's President later in the year, we cannot afford to lose the opportunity to commit him to more work before age permanently retires him. Peter Block once wrote that "Change from the top down happens at the will and whim of those below." We, the people, Africans generally, have an onerous duty to discover the Akinwumi Adesina in each of our countries and commit them to doing what they know how to do best - outstanding leadership! _________________ MARK ADEBAYO IS A PUBLISHED AUTHOR, NEWSPAPER COLUMNIST, MEDIA PRACTITIONER, AND STRATEGY CONSULTANT. The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), the main opposition group in Nigeria, has criticized the Federal Government for its perceived failure in addressing the country’s security challenges. This condemnation follows the recent massacre of 40 farmers in Borno State by the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on January 12th. In a press release signed by CUPP’s spokesperson, Comrade Mark Adebayo, the opposition coalition described the incident as a tragic example of the government’s inability to protect its citizens. CUPP highlighted the escalating insecurity across various states in Nigeria, with thousands of lives lost and millions displaced due to terrorist attacks and kidnappings. The coalition accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of neglecting its duty to safeguard the nation’s security, despite significant investments in counter-terrorism efforts. The statement called for a radical overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture, emphasizing the need for a government that can effectively combat insecurity. CUPP urged Nigerians to reject the APC in the 2027 elections, warning of dire consequences if the current administration remained in power beyond that year. Comrade Mark Adebayo, the National Spokesperson for CUPP, expressed condolences to the families of the victims and called for a decisive action to restore peace and stability in the country.

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has urged all the six governors of the South-West to treat as a security emergency the building of camps inside Yoruba forests by insurgents and terrorists fleeing from the North, and the group has offered to help security agencies tackle the danger. “These foreign Fulani terrorists have always said that after conquering the North, the South will be next. Now it is happening,” OPC President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi (alias Askari), said in a statement released on Sunday in Lagos. “But OPC is ready to let these evil dreamers know that Yorubaland can never be conquered or occupied by foreign invaders. Let the six governors of Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti states invite us to deal with this menace today before it is too late. “We have the men and capacity to confront these foreign invaders physically, militantly, technologically and spiritually. All we are demanding from South-West governors is the necessary invitation, equipment and support to do what needs to be done to wipe out this menace of foreign criminals.” Afolabi spoke in reaction to the alarm recently raised by Oyo State’s Governor Seyi Makinde that bandits and terrorists escaping from Military bombardment in the North were finding their way to the South-West and were building camps in the forests there. Additionally, the Yoruba socio-cultural group called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to collaborate with the governors of Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Ondo and Ekiti states to ensure that the threat of Boko Haram and other similar insurgents was quickly neutralised in the South-West before it became too late. Afolabi advised Yoruba governors to urgently invite all capable organisations, invididuals and security veterans, mobilise all resources, and task them with the responsibility of collaborating with security forces to stamp out the menace posed by the non-state actors that had made life a hell for Northerners and were now importing greater insecurity into the South. The OPC President said: “Enough is enough of paying lip service to the issue of tackling insecurity. Peace is the most important thing in any society. Without security and peace, no society can make progress. With the alarm sounded by His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde, all hands must be on deck to wipe out this existential threat to our collective welfare and send these evil people to hell or wherever they came from. “The Federal Government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu must not play politics with this matter. Tinubu must lead from the front and mobilise the Armed Forces to align with Amotekun, OPC, vigilantes, hunters, Agbekoya and Sunday Igboho’s team to face this dangerous threat to our collective peace and existence. “Tinubu must realise that destiny has placed him in this position to correct the great disservice done this nation by President Muhammadu Buhari, who opened our borders to foreign Fulani militants and herdsmen because they are his kinsmen. “Let it be clear that although Yoruba people have nothing against the Nigerian Fulani, with whom we have enjoyed centuries of a cordial relationship, we will not concede an inch of our land to foreign elements masquerading as herdsmen whose pastime is to kidnap, rape, plunder and kill our people. OPC and the Yoruba race will never ever allow such a wicked agenda. “For starters, the governors must insist that all herdsmen and foreigners should move out of the forests, games reserves, forest reserves and farm settlements in line with the 2021 order issued by the Late Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu SAN. After that directive has been reissued, any group found camping in the forests will be regarded as terrorists and summarily dealt with accordingly. A word is enough for the wise. “Right now, these invaders have constituted themselves into a danger to everyone, including their Nigerian Fulani kinsmen, whom they have been kidnapping, raping and killing. Nigerian Fulani too have been losing cattle and other livestock to these foreign rustlers and terrorists. So everyone has become a victim.” https://thenewsgiant.com/opc-to-s-west-govs-invite-us-to-chase-out-fulani-terrorists-camping-in-yorubaland/

The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has expressed sorrow over the death of over 65 Nigerians rushing for donated free foodstuffs, and has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately declare a state of emergency on food nationwide. In a press statement issued Tuesday, OPC General Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Fasehun, lamented the reported deaths last week of 35 people in Ibadan capital of Oyo State, 20 in Okija area of Anambra State, and 10 in Abuja the Federal Capital Territory. “As a matter of national emergency, Tinubu must intervene to bring down food prices to reduce hunger in Nigeria and ameliorate the sufferings of the citizens,” Fasehun said. “The government must declare a state of emergency on food immediately. “OPC urges the government to open the borders and ports for food to enter Nigeria quickly. Tinubu must allow for free movement of local and imported rice and other food items through the Nigerian highways. This government must mandate Customs and other agencies to stop seizing food and to stop hindering the transportation of edibles and consumables.” Expressing the sympathy of OPC on the tragic incident, Fasehun said the deaths reflected the hopelessness and frustration experienced by a vast majority of Nigerians. Fasehun said: “These avoidable deaths sound a loud and tragic message about the millions of Nigerians who are constantly confronted by crippling starvation and deep poverty. Yet governments at all levels show no concern. “Why should Nigeria, with its reputation as the Giant of Africa, record such tragic mishaps? Those deaths are a disgrace to our status as a nation blessed with natural resources, abundant human capacity and millions of hectares of arable land mass. “Truth be told, the palliatives the government feels it has provided are not working because they never reach the intended targets. Such provisions, no matter how well-intended, are grossly inadequate. Even worse, the distribution channels are too few and too selective to get the items to the really needy among Nigeria's 240 million citizens. “Today, a bag of rice has risen to more than N100,000, three times its price under Muhammadu Buhari, and about 15 times its value under Goodluck Jonathan. “Cooking gas has risen to over N18,000 today, from less than N10,000 under Buhari, and N2,000 under Jonathan. The cost of transportation is higher than it has ever been. “There is scarcity of Naira notes. Banks are rationing notes and customers are not able to collect more than N5,000 to N20,000 cash per day. This is unacceptable. “The government must scrap all policies that have impoverished Nigerians and brought unprecedented economic hardship on poor citizens. Policies that must go include: Zero-fuel subsidy, increased tariff on electricity, and high fees in government-owned educational institutions. “Every policy must have a human face. What is the use of government recording increases in revenue allocation when inflation eats up all the gains and Nigerians are being killed by hunger, frustration and desperation? “President Tinubu’s government must dedicate itself to guaranteeing food security. Every effort must be aimed towards restoring to Nigerians the conducive atmosphere and secure space to help farmers return to their farms.” According to OPC, the food crisis was only one of several devastating issues plaguing the nation, including: Insecurity marked by kidnappings, armed robbery and insurgencies that have paralysed rural farming communities and disrupted the food supply chain. Additionally, the group decried the epidemic of youth unemployment, “where millions of young Nigerians remain jobless despite their education, a situation that has created widespread disillusionment and fuelled criminal activities.” Fasehun also advised the President to stop security agents from employing obnoxious and archaic laws to gag Nigerians from expressing themselves freely as expected in a democracy. He recalled that the President was himself a loud voice in NADECO against the tyranny of military rule, alongside the likes of the Dr. Frederick Fasehun, Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti, Chief Anthony Enahoro, Chief Arthur Nwankwo, Comrade Shehu Sani, Comrade Chima Ubani and Chief Gani Fawehinmi. "Now that Tinubu, a Pro-Democracy Activist, is in power, why are Nigerians being denied their right to free expression and freedom to protest peacefully?” Fasehun challenged.

Lagos Opposition Parties Call For Speaker Obasa's Resignation Over Non-Screening Of State Electoral LASIEC Nominees The Lagos State United Opposition Political Parties (LASTOP) has condemned the state government over the inability to start the process of conducting the local government election. At a press conference held on Tuesday in Lagos, the former Governorship Candidate of the Action Alliance Party and Spokesperson of LASTOP, Sola Olomola, addressed the media on crucial issues regarding the local government elections in Lagos state. Olomola raised concerns about the delay in conducting elections into the 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in Lagos State. He pointed out that the tenure of the current local government officials is set to expire in four months, yet there are no signs of preparations for the elections. The main issue highlighted during the press conference was the refusal of the Lagos State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Right Honorable Mudashiru Obasa, to screen the nominees for the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC). The nominees have been named but have been waiting for over eight months for screening, raising suspicions of a deliberate attempt to delay the elections. Olomola emphasised that Section 5 of the LASIEC law mandated the conduct of elections into all the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs in Lagos state, not just the LGAs. He warned against any attempt to shortchange the LCDAs by conducting elections only in the LGAs, as it would be strongly resisted by opposition parties in the state. The opposition parties are determined to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming elections, citing the government's failure to bring development to the people, LASTOP said. It accused the ruling APC of planning to either illegally extend the tenures of current LGA and LCDA executives or replace them with handpicked APC members as Sole Administrators. The body said such a move would undermine democracy at the local government level. LASTOP appealed to the Judiciary to expedite action on the resolution of all litigations related to the screening and inauguration of LASIEC nominees to ensure timely elections in all LGAs and LCDAs. They also called for the resignation of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa if he continued to delay the screening process. The opposition parties threatened to mobilise their members and voters to occupy the Lagos State House of Assembly until the screening of LASIEC nominees would be completed. They condemned the Speaker's actions and alleged that his ties to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were influencing his decisions. LASTOP reiterated its commitment to challenging APC in the upcoming elections and called for a united effort to remove the current government from power in Lagos state. The press conference was attended by various opposition party representatives, including those for Labour Party, NNPP, ZLP, and Allied Peoples Movement.

In a press conference held on Wednesday, the 5th of December, 2024, Barrister Kayode Mogbojuri, speaking on behalf of the Registered Trustees of Secure World and Liberty Initiative, addressed the critical need for the screening of members of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC). The event highlighted the pressing constitutional and democratic concerns surrounding the delay in conducting local government elections in Lagos State. The Registered Trustees of Secure World and Liberty Initiative recently took legal action by filing a case at the High Court of Lagos State against the Governor of Lagos State and the Lagos State House of Assembly. The lawsuit aims to compel the House of Assembly to fulfill its constitutional duty of screening LASIEC members, who were appointed by the Governor six months ago. Mogbojuri emphasized the vital role of local government councils in delivering essential services and promoting participatory democracy at the grassroots level. However, the failure to conduct elections regularly, as mandated by the Constitution of Nigeria, poses a significant threat to democracy and governance in Lagos State. The delay in screening LASIEC members not only violates constitutional provisions but also undermines the democratic principles of accountability and transparency. The current situation has created uncertainties for elected local government officials and raises concerns about the potential extension of their tenures beyond statutory limits, jeopardizing the democratic will of the people. The press conference highlighted the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly's alleged obstruction of the screening process, which could lead to the appointment of administrative officers to manage Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in violation of constitutional mandates for elected leadership at the local government level. The call to action extends beyond Lagos State, with national implications for upholding democratic governance. The press conference urged civil society organizations, the media, and all Nigerians to demand accountability from the Lagos State Government and the House of Assembly in ensuring the integrity of local government elections. The Registered Trustees of Secure World and Liberty Initiative reiterated their commitment to pursuing the matter through legal channels to defend democracy and uphold the voices of the people. The press conference concluded with a plea for the Lagos State House of Assembly to promptly screen LASIEC appointees to prevent further compromise of democracy at the grassroots level. The urgent need for action to safeguard democracy in Lagos State resonates as a critical issue with far-reaching implications for the future of democratic governance in Nigeria.

The Coalition of Anti-Corruption Organisation salutes former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello for voluntarily honouring the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission's (EFCC) invitation and submitting himself to the anti-graft agency. The Coalition views this as a positive step towards resolving the stalemate in the case. In a statement on Wednesday, Comrade Debo Adeniran, the Executive Chairman of the Center for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), and Comrade Olufemi Lawson, Spokesperson for the Coalition of Anti-Corruption Organizations, emphasized the importance of professionalism, fairness, and respect for the rights of the defendant in the EFCC's handling of the case. While expressing full support for the EFCC's mandate to investigate and prosecute corruption, the Coalition urged the Commission to conduct the case without bias or political persecution. It highlighted the need for the EFCC to avoid actions that could be perceived as attempts to humiliate or harass Mr. Bello, such as public parading or the release of mug shots. The coalition stressed the principle of innocence until proven guilty and called for a speedy, transparent, and fair trial for the former governor. They emphasized the importance of following due process and ensuring that the legal proceedings are conducted in accordance with the rule of law. According to the Coalition, its support for Nigeria's anti-corruption agencies remained unshaken. It urged the EFCC operatives to continue their work with a focus on justice and fairness. They called for the EFCC to proceed with the trial without unnecessary delays, upholding the principles of justice and integrity throughout the process.

Conductor of Nigeria’s famous June 12 election, Professor Humphrey Nwosu, Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) from 1989 to 1993, is dead. Reports say Nwosu died in a hospital in Virginia, United States of America, aged 83. He was born on October 2, 1941. The Political Science Professor from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka was appointed by General Ibrahim Babangida, as replacement for Professor Eme Awa at NEC. Nwosu conducted the June 12, 1993 election, regarded as the freest and fairest election till date in Nigeria. The presidential election was won by Chief Moshood Abiola, the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, who defeated Bashir Tofa, the candidate of the National Republican Convention. Nwosu’s commission introduced the novel Option A4 voting system and the Open ballot system. Nwosu had released many of the election results when he was ordered by the Babangida military regime to stop further announcements. Nwosu was born on 2 October 1941. He became a Professor of political science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He served in the cabinet of Samson Omeruah, Military Governor of the old Anambra State, where he helped traditional rulers to gain staffs of office, receive salaries and settled intra and inter community land disputes. He also served as chairman of a Federal Technical Committee on the application of Civil Service Reforms in the local government service. He was appointed NEC Chairman in 1989.

BREAKING: 200 CSOs Throw Weight Behind 19 States' Suit To Examine EFCC's Constitutionality AVOID CONSTITUTIONAL ANARCHY; FG MUST ALLOW THE JUDICIARY TO DO ITS WORK Compatriots, fellow Comrades, ladies and gentlemen of the Press: Our gathering here today is to address a fundamental issue regarding the security of our democracy. The pillar of legitimacy of every variant of democracy is the constitution on which it is founded. That is why it is said among political scientists that if it is not constitutional democracy, it is not a democracy. Democracy is more than just a game of numbers. It is a process guided by a constitution that must be respected, adhered to and protected by every institution of government and the citizens at large. Therefore, whenever questions arise that involves undermining the constitution by action or inaction of government or individuals, such questions must be answered via a thorough interrogation by the judiciary to make interpretations to clear all doubts and contestations in that respect. The 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended may not be a perfect document as has been variously analyzed by many legal pundits and activists, including those of us on this table. But, for now, it remains Nigeria's political legal tender binding on all Nigerian residents/citizens, political actors and, even, the government. Until that constitution is amended through due processes as stipulated by the same constitution, we must abide by its extant provisions to the letter. It is in this regard that we are intervening on the side of justice in order to save our democracy from a pending constitutional anarchy as currently being canvassed by the Federal Government through the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. It is now public knowledge that 19 states in the country have approached the Supreme Court to determine whether the establishment of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC , the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, followed constitutional due processes, which they believe it didn't. Such a quest for the clarity of due processes should not be subjected to unnecessary frustration, manipulation or outright sabotage by the Federal Government which ordinarily should be interested in upholding the country's constitutional integrity. The preliminary objection action instituted by the Federal Government on this matter smacks of anarchical tendencies. One would have expected the Federal Government to go to the Court to argue its case against the 19 states rather than apply for it to be struck out prematurely, which many Nigerians have interpreted to mean an attempt to intimidate the Judiciary into doing the bidding of the FG. This is so uncalled for. The Court should be allowed to determine whether these agencies were duly formed in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended or not. If it was, that's the end of the case. But, if not, we would be presented with another opportunity to get it right this time around. From all indications, the establishment of these agencies were made by FG's fiat by dwelling disproportionately on international conventions and obligations of Nigeria which are fundamentally inferior to Nigeria's Constitution. OUR constitution is the supreme document to which all citizens and government institutions must subject themselves. Section 12, 1 & 2 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended is unequivocal about this. If there are missing links in the establishment of these noble agencies, they are better fixed now before we run into serious constitutional crises that can frustrate our efforts to stamp out corruption from our national life. Any unconstitutional act by government or individuals, no matter how noble or beneficial, would eventually amount to a nullity under intense legal interrogations. We can save ourselves all the troubles by allowing the Judiciary decide on this controversy without any attempt to apply federal might to scuttle the process. As a coalition of over 200 CSOs, we have instructed our lawyers to see the possibility of being joined in the suit with the 19 states who are already in Court. If that's legally allowable, be rest assured that we will be fully represented in the matter because, being Civil Society, we are the conscience of our democracy and the course of justice in our nation. Thank you all. Sgd. Comrade Ifeanyi Odili, President of Campaign for Democracy And Dr. Dapo Oluwole, Executive Director, Transparency and Accountability Network (TAN) On behalf of 200 other CSOs OCTOBER 22ND, 2024. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State has agreed for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the candidate in the September 21 governorship election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and their legal representatives to inspect materials used for election. The electoral umpire had refused to allow the petitioners’ legal team access to the materials, despite a court order to that effect. Unhappy that INEC frustrated their efforts at filing a watertight petition, ighodalo mounted a vigorous public outcry that culminated in the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Anugbom Onuoha, issuing a statement on Tuesday that PDP and the candidate can now come forward on Wednesday for the inspection. Ads In a strongly worded statement on Monday titled ‘Edo 2024: Stop Your Obstructive Tactics, TAMO Tells Police and APC Thugs,’ and signed by Erhabor Emokpae, Team Asue Media Organisation (TAMO) charged the Nigeria Police Force, APC and INEC to “immediately cease their obstructive tactics aimed at frustrating the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, in the September 21 governorship election in his quest for legitimate access to BVAS data used for the election,” insisting that “these actions not only undermine the core principles of democracy but also threaten the rule of law in Nigeria,” TAMO further noted that “despite overwhelming evidence of electoral malfeasance, the PDP’s efforts to seek justice through the judiciary have been met with aggressive resistance from APC-aligned thugs and complicit law enforcement officers. Elements of the police, rather than upholding the law, have allied themselves with those intent on derailing justice by preventing the PDP from accessing the BVAS machines used in the election, despite a despite a court order authorising such access.” Reacting to the development on Wednesday morning, Emokpae said it was gratifying to see the efforts mounted by the PDP, Team Asue and Edo women to ensure that PDP legal team is allowed unfettered access to inspect the materials finally paid off. https://thenewsgiant.com/inec-finally-agrees-to-pdp-inspecting-edo-election-materials/

First, we like to dispel the ignorant rumor that CUPP is a coalition of de-registered political Parties. That is a lie from the pit of hell being orchestrated by state actors who feel threatened by our consistent calling out of this failed government. For instance, I am a card-carrying member of the Labour Party here in Abuja. Same goes for the Secretary of the Coalition, High Chief Peter Ameh. Barrister Emeka Benjamin is a member of the African Democratic Congress, ADC. Everyone you see on this set is a member of one registered political Party or the other. So, ignore the devil propaganda that we are political loafers. It is a deliberate propaganda of falsehood against a vibrant opposition that gets them afraid. We are once again gathered here today to address you on the state of the Nigerian nation. As a patriotic and responsible opposition Coalition, we have a mandate to interrogate the socioeconomic and political status of our dear country and speak truth to power in defence of justice, democracy and in the overall interests of the country. Despite the tyrannical tendencies of the current APC administration which is misusing the authority of government to silence the voices of the people, we refuse to be gagged or intimidated by the repressive forces of state. We will continue speak for Nigerians and stand firm on the cause of justice, fairness, and good governance. To start with, less than 24 hours ago, inspite of the harrowing economic conditions of the country orchestrated by the atrocious economic policies of the Tinubu administration, the pump price of fuel was again increased to over N1000 per liter. In less than one and half years of the Tinubu administration, fuel prices have been increased by over 2000% which has exponentially increased poverty, hunger and general suffering of Nigerians as persistently unleashed on us by a totally insensitive and wicked administration. This is not the Nigeria we envisaged at the return of democracy in 1999. In addition, the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu merely pays lip service to local government autonomy whilst in practice it is working actively to undermine the autonomy and stability of local governments across the country. We are all living witnesses to the carnage and reckless violence unleashed on Rivers State people last Saturday during the recently held local government election in that state. That act of brigandage is not only reprehensible but outrightly criminal and terroristic in nature. What happened there was tantamount to state-sponsored terrorism. What they failed to achieve by bullets and bombs in Rivers State, they are trying to achieve by other means in Lagos State and to extend it, systematically, to other states. The whole idea is to cripple local government administration and turn it into the errand organ of the Federal Government. There is a deliberate, systematic onslaught against Local Government autonomy by this pretentious Tinubu administration. For instance, what is currently playing out in Lagos State, which is the home state of the president, on local government administration is extremely worrisome. There is a serious attempt to subjugate the local governments under the authority of the state assembly in Lagos State to the extent that, judging by the current shenanigans of constitutional amendments to local government administration in Lagos State currently being undertaken by the Lagos State House of Assembly, the control of markets is to be taken away from local governments and put under the purview of Lagos State House of Assembly. How ridiculous! How could a legislative arm want to take over the executive responsibilities of a local government that has elected executive councils complete with its own legislative arm? It is a known fact that the current Speaker of the Lagos State Assembly is a close ally of President Bola Tinubu and it is clear that he couldn't be orchestrating such constitutional aberration without the direct prompting his boss in Abuja. Therefore, it can safely be said that the president is trying to undermine local government councils through his proxies. If what is playing out in Lagos State, against the unequivocal judgment of the Supreme Court on local government autonomy, is allowed to stand, it may spread to other states and further render local governments prostrate and ineffective. Authorities in Lagos have over the years allowed LAHA to cross the line of “decency” and this has given rise to a legislature that is usurping the powers of Governor and the LGs. Is Lagos House of Assembly bigger than the people who elected LG Chairmen or their councils who have the legal powers to remove an erring Chairman? This is utter nonsense, arbitrariness, ignorance, hypocrisy, arrogance, incompetence, recklessness and lawlessness! How can a House of Assembly be purporting to do this and defending it? They have been getting away with this nonsense in the past but enough is enough! Even the issue of market control which led to the purported suspension of the Alimosho LG chairman is squarely on the residual list reserved for LG’s legislative arm. What is the business of a state assembly dabbling into that? Moreover, anything that has to do with crimes and insecurity is the responsibility of the police and the Governor, who is the chief executive of the State. Like in their fraudulent Renewed Hope mantra, it is clear that their claim of promoting local government autonomy is a mere mirage and grand scheme to dominate the LGs whilst undermining state Governors. It is another grand scheme in preparation for their 2027 ambition to manipulate themselves back into power. All Nigerians can see clearly and feel the full effects of the horrible records of this government in the areas of the terminally sick economy, appalling insecurity, horrible human rights regime, political persecution under the guise of fighting corruption, unprecedented hunger. Suicide rate has become an epidemic under this grossly incompetent Tinubu administration. There is no excuse valid enough for the atrocious and murderous neo-liberal economic policies of this government. It only goes to demonstrate the fact the Tinubu government has nothing good for Nigerians other than extreme hardship and unmitigated suffering. We make bold to reemphasize that Mr. Bola Tinubu prepared very well to be president, but never prepared to govern. That is the major factor in the current calamitous state of the nation. While we call in Nigerians to remain resilient, we appeal to them to cooperate and collaborate with the opposition political Parties to free them from the undeserved suffering that the Tinubu administration has unleashed on them in the last 14 months of relentless state socioeconomic terrorism. In 2027, we, the people, must organize democratically to make this happen and Nigerians should trust us to make this happen. We are not unaware of the clandestine sabotage activities of state agents against opposition figures and political Parties. All the crises you witness today in some opposition Parties are deliberate external interferences by state agents to cripple the opposition. But, we promise them that they will fail! We are strong as ever and we will not abdicate our mandate to rescue Nigeria and Nigerians from the retrogressive forces that are holding it captive. Aluta continua, vitoria â certa. Thank you for your listening attention, Comrade Mark Adebayo, National Spokesperson, CUPP. https://thenewsgiant.com/lagos-assemblys-attempt-to-cage-local-govts-a-threat-to-democracy/

The Coalition of United Opposition Political Parties (CUPP) has described Nigeria as a victim of successive crude, unpatriotic, incompetent and myopic leadership since flag Independence in 1960. CUPP said the Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime had inflicted the worst damage upon the country and the people. In a Press Release issued by CUPP's national Spokesperson, Comrade Mark Adebayo, on the occasion of the celebration of the country's 64th Independence anniversary, the opposition political parties stated that Nigeria is in a dire mess at the moment. CUPP's statement said: "It is difficult to congratulate Nigerians on this occasion of the 64th independence anniversary of the country because there is really nothing to celebrate. Independence is not an end in itself but was supposed to be a means to an end that translates into development, security, peace, and unity. But on all these indices, Nigeria is a crawling giant due, fundamentally, to the unfortunate succession of crude, heavily corrupt, unpatriotic, incompetent, and myopic leadership that has bedeviled this country since flag Independence. "Each administration is worse than the last one. In 1960 at independence, Nigeria held a huge promise as the giant of Africa and the light of all blacks globally with enormous potentials to be among the most developed in the comity of nations. But, alas, the foster elites that took over from the colonialists, plus the military and civilian politicians that followed them made looting of the country's resources a fundamental policy of government. "Critical infrastructures of state like education, energy, security, health, motorable roads, etc, have been pushed from the table to give way to the avariciously insatiable appetite of the ruling cliques. They act like an army of occupation unleashing socioeconomic mayhem on the country relentlessly. They have declared a war of attrition on the country whilst the citizens are the worst victims of their onslaughts. "The current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will go down in history as one of the worst ever in the annals of Nigeria's history. From day one, his government has started inflicting pains, suffering and hunger on Nigerians without let or hindrance. He has continued to promise harder and harder life for Nigerians for as long as his administration lasts. Food, education, health and security are far beyond the reach of 90% of the Nigerian population. Inflation is at an all-time high while our Naira has crashed against global and African currencies. Even the currency of the Republic of Bénin is much stronger than the Naira. This is how badly this government has ruined Nigeria's economy. "We commiserate with Nigerians on this 64th independence anniversary of failure, hunger, insecurity, pains and suffering. We urge Nigerians to support the opposition to rescue the country from the retrogressive APC in 2027 and give Nigerians a breathing space from the current dire mess that Nigeria is in". THENEWSGIANT
