The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has congratulated Nigeria’s new President, Bola Tinubu and Vice-President, Kashim Shettima on their inauguration and swearing-in, while tasking them to hit the ground running. The union charged the new leaders to fix the nation’s refineries amongst other challenges. The union in the congratulatory message signed by its President and General Secretary, Williams Akporeha and Afolabi Olawole, urged Tinubu to make the nation’s public refineries functional and to address other daunting challenges in the Oil and Gas industry, including fuel subsidy, insecurity and oil theft and strict adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) among others. The statement read: “Without any doubt, a major socio-economic policy on the front burner of national discourse and expectation is the recurrent debate for the removal of subsidy from the Petroleum Motor Spirit. “As a responsible and responsive Trade Union in the industry, we are very desirous of policy change on the issue of subsidy, but we are deeply concerned of the failure of the successive administration to do the needful as severally advised and canvassed for by organized labor in order to avoid unintended consequences on the people and the body polity.” The NUPENG leaders said that the union was delighted that the recently commissioned Dangote Refinery was addressing the concern of dependence on fuel importation, but advised that the new administration should not rush into taking any decision on the policy change until the products hit the market. The union however noted, “In same vein the in-coming administration should make all three public refineries (Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna) functional and should not because of the anticipatory products availability from Dangote refinery allow the funds injected into the rehabilitation of these refineries waste.” It stated that concrete efforts should be geared towards making them functional to operate in full capacities to generate returns on the investments. “It has always been our firm belief that deregulation that is based on local production will not only increase the revenue earnings of the country, but it will also generate employment and make life more meaningful to ordinary Nigerians,” the statement expressed. It further suggested that the new administration should have robust engagement and discussion with all key stakeholders especially the organized Labor on ways and means to mitigate these consequences on employment, inflation and living conditions of the working people. ..... https://thenewsgiant.com/nupeng-urges-president-tinubu-fix-refineries-wait-for-dangote-fuel-before-removing-subsidy/

The tears promise to flow freely today Friday as the Ondo State Government and Owo folks commit to the earth the bodies of 40 worshippers of the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Church killed two Sundays ago by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen. Governor Rotimi Akeredolu as mourner-in-chief will lead sorrowing indigenes and sympathisers, expected to throng the mass graves dug in a purpose-built graveyard. Built by the state, the new graveyard will remain an eternal monument of the coldblooded killing of the victims by murderers who are still on the run. The Ondo Catholic Diocese’s Director of Social Communication, Rev. Fr. Augustine Ikwu, told reporters on Monday that the mass burial of the victims had been slated for the new cemetery provided on Emure Road in the ancient town in South-West Nigeria. While 40 people died immediately and after the attack, several others continue to battle various degrees of injuries. Most of those injured are still receiving treatment at the government-owned Federal Medical Centre, Owo, as well as a couple of private hospitals in the town. The killings have received wide condemnation from world leaders, including the Pontiff of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis. https://thenewsgiant.com/mass-burial-holds-today-in-owo-for-40-catholics-massacred-by-fulani-terrorists/

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has debunked the news making the rounds that a court in Abuja had nullified the party’s governorship primary. The state’s APC Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe, urged Nigerians particularly Ekiti people and party members “to disregard the rumour and discountenance it as the forlorn wish of some desperate politicians in the state, which cannot come to pass”. Dipe said in a statement titled, ‘Ekiti Guber: Biodun Oyebanji remains APC candidate, no court nullified Ekiti APC primary’ in Ado Ekiti that the party’s governorship candidate, Biodun Oyebanji, remained the leading candidate in Saturday’s election. He said, “The warped rumour is a demarketing gimmick of some desperate opposition who are unmindful of the fact that they are causing further damage to their zero chances at the poll, instead of enhancing it. Post-primary crisis deepens Ekiti APC internal strife, Bamidele, Adeyeye, others draw battle lines with Fayemi “While we do not expect anyone to take such mindless and baseless rumour serious, we, however, owe the public the duty of care and assurance that they should disregard the rumour, which is farthest from the truth. “Yes, there were some cases filed by some disgruntled elements regarding the governorship primaries we organized in January this year, which saw to the emergence of Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji as the candidate of our party, but none has gone beyond the preliminary stage and all of them have been transferred back to Ekiti for hearing. “No High Court is sitting on any matter regarding our primary in Abuja as at today. Furthermore, every matter relating to the primary has been adjourned till September this year. To the best of our knowledge, none is up for hearing at the moment. The only one perhaps is in the wildest imagination of our detractors, which cannot see the light of day. Our party remains focused on the coming election and sure of untainted victory at the end.” “APC, therefore, calls on all electorate in the state to remain calm and unshaken in their resolve to ensure that their adored candidate, Oyebanji, and adored party, APC coast home to victory come Saturday, 18 June 2022,” Dipe stated. https://punchng.com/no-court-nullified-gov-primary-ekiti-apc/

Latest signals from Aso Rock a few moments indicate that the President Muhammadu Buhari has given a firm nod for the presidential ticket to be the exclusive preserve of the South. THENEWSGIANT sources reveal that this message had been passed down to Northern party chieftains in order to get delegates from the zone to yield their votes to solely Southern aspirants. What is not clear, however, is whether the President would actually open up, pinpoint his particularly preferred candidate, and market this preference to party chieftains. ......... Although the President reportedly got initially confused by the idea sold yesterday by the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman and former Nasarawa Governor, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, that Senate President Ahmad Lawan be endorsed as the consensus candidate, the firm stand of the 12 northern governors from the party especially weighed heavily on him. ................ However, the governors reportedly stood their ground and insisted on honouring the earlier understanding that the presidency should swing from the North to the South at the 2023 election. https://thenewsgiant.com/initially-confused-buhari-finally-endorses-southern-apc-candidate-thenewsgiant-exclusive/

Former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, has been caught in a web, with his being announced today into the presidential campaign committee of Senate President Ahmad Lawan, despite the maverick politician being appointed in April as Deputy National Coordinator of the presidential campaign organisation of the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello. It is not clear how and if Fani-Kayode can serve two people with conflicting interest. However, earlier today, the Ahmad Lawan Campaign Organisation rolled out its list of appointment, with former Governor of Abia state and current Chief Whip of the 9th Senate, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, taking the post of Director-General, and Femi Fani Kayode as the Deputy Chairman for Media and Publicity. It translates to Fani-Kayode serving two presidential aspirants, both of whom are vying for the ticket the All Progressives Congress (APC). He was on April 1 announced as Deputy National Coordinator for Bello, serving under Hafsat Abiola-Costello, daughter of the late June 12 hero, Bashorun Moshood Abiola (Director-General), and Senator Jonathan Zwingina (National Coordinator). Making the disclosure at a high-powered meeting in Abuja today Thursday was the Ahmad Lawan Central Campaign Organisation, which also announced the appointment of executives to eight committees. They include: FINANCE AND BUDGET Auwal Lawan –Chairman Senator Sani Musa–Co-Chairman STRATEGY AND PLANNING Senator Ikechukwu Obiora –Chairman Senator Betty Apiafi –Deputy Chairman CONTACT AND MOBILISATION Senator Barau Jibrin –Chairman Senator Peter Nwaoboshi—Deputy Chairman MEDIA AND PUBLICITY Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi –Chairman Femi Fani Kayode–Deputy Chairman .SECURITY AND INTELLIGENCE Mallam Lawal Daura–Chairman Commodore Mohammed Barau(Rtrd) –Deputy Chairman TRANSPORT AND LOGISTICS Senator Bello Mandiya–Chairman Hon. Senator Shehu Sani Under Nairalanders’ Fire For Gunmen, Deborah Tweet Senator Shehu Sani has courted the ire of some internet users after he tweeted to label as hypocrites and cowards people he accused of protesting the killing of the Christian student in Sokoto but maintaining silence on the activities of “Unknown Gunmen,” operating in the South-East. His sparse post, however, drew some fire as some condemned him. He had tweeted: “You condemn ‘the murder’ in Sokoto but you don’t have the courage and the conscience to condemn the murderous activities of Gunmen and unknown Gunmen in your area (shokoto), including the slaughter of a legislator; that is hypocrisy and cowardice.” On the interactive Nigerian platform, Nairaland, one male poster, “blazingblender,” responding wrote: “Okay. Have you condemn yours?? Or are we praising those who killed the legislator. Or have they been arrested and we are violently protesting for their release or the 10m bounty placed. Why was it not also placed on Deborah’s killers ?? Traffic and business in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State came to a halt today, Thursday, as commercial motorcycle (Okada) mostly operators reportedly of Northern extraction defied attempts to stop them plying the roads in line with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Wednesday directive. Reports from that axis said that the Okada operators faced gun-toting police who had come to enforce the ban. Shots were fired around Alaba Rago as the defiant boys faced police officers, apparently beating a retreat on foot. The Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) has called for northern leaders and the Federal Government to halt immediately the ongoing ethno-religious violence in Sokoto and other northern states, as well as guarantee the safety of the lives and businesses of Southerners in the North. In a statement by OPC’s President, Otunba Wasiu Afolabi, the group also demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution by police and security authorities of the Islamic leaders who fuelled the crisis by directly mobilising rioters and through making inflammatory statements, following the killing of the female student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education. “These people must know that nobody has a monopoly of violence. Nobody should provoke Yoruba people. Northerners cannot continue to take the laws into their hands. We hold President Muhammadu Buhari and all the governors responsible for this provocative resort to violence by rioters. Northern leaders must immediately put a stop to this madness because it is capable of provoking reprisals from other parts of the country,” OPC said, adding, “Enough is enough.” Condemning the killing of Miss Deborah Samuel in the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, the Yoruba socio-cultural group described her murder as unwarranted, barbaric and provocative. Afolabi said: “We demand justice for Miss Deborah Samuel, whose life was so brazenly cut short in her prime. OPC demands that her killers must be hunted down, brought to justice and made to face the maximum punishment that the law dictates.” Describing the spiralling riots as unjust and provocative, OPC warned that it would not fold it arms while Yoruba and Southerners were being killed and maltreated in the North by rampaging fundamentalists. He added: “Equally, we note with much concern the provocative statements made by some religious and regional leaders, who flagrantly justified the killing of Miss Deborah Samuel. We demand that such disgruntled elements must be arrested and charged to court.” According to Afolabi, it stood logic on its head and it was a proof of the collusion between authorities and religious fundamentalists the fact that the arrest of suspects in the Sokoto killing sparked riots in Sokoto and some northern cities. OPC said: “This is what we have always said about the lopsided structure of President Buhari’s security architecture. The only thing that has emboldened these mobsters is the fact that all the security levers are under the total control of Northerners, who will treat their violence with kid’s gloves.” Recalling that former President Olusegun Obasanjo once declared that security agencies should shoot-on-sight members of OPC and other self-determination groups for no justifiable reason, Afolabi wondered why President Muhammadu Buhari had failed to read the riot act to rampaging rioters in the North now maiming, killing and looting with reckless abandon. OPC called for Buhari to borrow a leaf from General Sani Abacha’s handling of the Wahhabists involved in the 1995 beheading in Kano of Gideon Akaluka, a South-Easterner. “These misguided miscreants must learn the hard way that the true God Almighty does not demand human sacrifice; and on no account should they ever take the life of anybody,” Afolabi said. https://thenewsgiant.com/opc-spits-fire-on-sokoto-riots-killing-of-db/

This is a mischievous and evil headline. The man never said he would govern Nigeria like Buhari did |
Truth is that if PDP had governed from 1999 in this lob-sided and parochial and jingoistic way APC has governed since 2015, this Fourth Republic would have been over tay-tay. Let Garba Shehu take that to the bank. |
Easter is here!!! Happy Easter to all Nairalanders. May God grant us grace to see more in the land of the living in Jesus name. Here is my favourite Easter line. "An empty grave is there to prove my Saviour lives." It is from the hymn, God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus. What is yours? Share! +++++++++++++++++++++ God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus He came to love, heal and forgive He lived and died to buy my pardon An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Because He lives, I can face tomorrow Because He lives, all fear is gone Because I know He holds the future And life is worth the living Just because He lives. How sweet to hold a newborn baby And feel the pride and the joy he gives But greater still the calm assurance This child can face uncertain days because He Lives. And then one day, I’ll cross that river I’ll fight life’s final war with pain And then, as death gives way to vict’ry I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He reigns. Because He lives, I can face tomorrow Because He lives, all fear is gone Because I know He holds the future And life is worth the living Just because He lives

I am older than you by how many years? |
Observe, nowadays, fewer and fewer Nigerians are using the face mask. This is unlike much of 2020 and 2021 when it was made a compulsory item for use outside the home. Not a few felt that with the relatively low rate of COVID-19 infections in Nigeria, people were reluctant to clamp that strange item on their faces as it happens in Europe and America. Public facilities in Nigeria like hospitals, banks and supermarkets and even eateries made it a must wear or else violators would be banned from gaining entrance. However, the tide has turned and the trend has changed. Nowadays, many Nigerians have abandoned the wearing of face masks. When last did you use a face mask personally? Why and where did you use it?

A Presidential Aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ibrahim Bello Dauda, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the fair and peaceful conduct of Saturday’s council elections in the Federal Capital Territory Dauda, however, lamented the low voter turnout. He, also, congratulated the winners in the elections, saying that they must regard their victory as a call to serve their constituents. In a Wednesday statement by the Media Directorate of his El Dabi 2023 Presidential Campaign, Dauda said the results, in which the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) cleared three of the six seats of Council Chairman, showed that both INEC and Buhari were supremely committed to guaranteeing the sanctity of elections in the country. According to the 49-year-old businessman-academics, the President demonstrated a resolve not to interfere with electoral outcomes as well as a robust commitment to allowing the will of Nigerians to prevail at the polls. “The fact that the President’s party did not score a landslide victory in the Abuja elections is a very good signal for our democracy,” Dauda said. “Nigerians can go to sleep, knowing that, like the case of Edo State, future elections in this country will not be tampered with just to please the ruling party. Gradually President Muhammadu Buhari and this administration in INEC are showing a determination to let votes count and leave behind a legacy of free, fair and credible elections.” However, Dauda said APC members must let the elections teach them about the need to close ranks and approach public polls as one house. “If truth be told, we the ruling APC underperformed on Saturday,” he submitted. “It means that we must learn from the age-old maxim of: United We Stand, Divided We Fall. Simply put, APC at that local level failed to approach the elections with one heart and one house. And that is a lesson for the bigger house for future and bigger electoral stakes.” Dauda, who recently threw his hat into the ring to compete for the presidency under APC, is an Accountant and Administrator, who holds a doctorate degree in Business Administration from the Cornerstone University in Israel. From the Kanuri stock in Gora town, Shani Local Government Area of Borno State, Dauda was born in Jos North area of Plateau State on June 3, 1972. He, however, bemoaned the fact that the FCT Area council polls in Abuja at the weekend recorded a voter turnout of about 10 percent. Speaking on the sparse voter turnout, he said, “The 10 percent voters who turned out to vote are most likely the traders, farmers and artisans. The 90 percent who refused to vote represents the educated ones, only spending their time on social media identifying all the problems in Nigeria. However, when the election threw up the opportunity to be part of the solution, they were nowhere to be found. Is this how we want Nigeria to change?” The former chieftain of Buhari’s now defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) holds no fewer than 27 professional and academic certifications, as well as about 13 honorary awards and decorations, from Nigeria, several African countries, America and other parts of the world. https://www.thepointng.com/apc-presidential-aspirant-hails-buhari-inec-on-abuja-polls-bemoans-voter-apathy/?amp=1

Unilag's 55,000 students have been having a major headache trying to take online classes as directed by the school authorities. Indications are that the school's central server crashed. One student said she had been trying to come online since midnight to no avail. So can someone ask the University of Lagos what the razzmatazz was all about when the students cannot access the school server? For weeks, the foremost institution of learning announced resumption date for today, January 25, 2021, after over nine months of a nationwide strike by university teachers, a strike influenced by both the corona virus and the ASUU dispute with the Federal Government. However, anxious students were told classes would commence online today. Chats across several platforms and groups show that Unilag's much vaunted online and internet classes ended up being a disappointing and anti-climatic no-show. The school's records shows that it has about 55,000 students. For many of these students, the strike continues. "They are not ready for online classes. They should just let us return to campus and take our lectures as usual," one disappointed student grumbled.
