A British woman has been arrested in Malaysia for allegedly posing naked on top of a sacred mountain and upsetting mountain gods, causing a 5.9 magnitude earthquake on the mountain last Friday June 5 which killed 18 people. Eleanor Hawkins is being held with four other Westerners while they are investigated for indecent behaviour. The five face possible prison sentences. They are believed to be part of a group of 10 people who stripped naked before taking photos at the peak of Mount Kinabalu on May 30 – an act which a senior minister in Malaysia has blamed for causing an earthquake that killed 18 climbers last week.

Miss Hawkins, a 23-year-old Southampton University graduate from Derby, was detained on Tuesday at Tawau airport as she was flying from the island of Borneo to the capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Her father, Timothy Hawkins said last night: ‘We spoke to her this morning. She’s okay, she’s very scared, she’s very upset. She’s been arrested. It’s not a situation she’s been in before so it’s not good.
‘We’ve talked to the consulate and arranged a lawyer.’



Mr Hawkins, who runs a mechanical engineering business, said his daughter is ‘obviously in the photos’ but he did not want the situation to be ‘blown out of all proportion’.
‘It’s fair enough to charge for the misdemeanour committed,’ he said. ‘What we don’t want is her lumbered with further charges.’

After a 5.9 magnitude earthquake hit the 13,400ft-high mountain on Friday, Sabah deputy chief minister Joseph Pairin Kitingan blamed the tragedy on the tourists for showing ‘disrespect to the sacred mountain’ by posing naked at the peak.

He has said a special ritual will be conducted to ‘appease the mountain spirit’ after 18 people were killed in the disaster.

A PHCN official was electrocuted around 7 this evening on an electrical pole on Sanusi Fafunwa street, Victoria Island. He was fortunately rescued by by colleagues who were around when it happened. He was quickly rushed to a nearby hospital where he's receiving treatment.

After six long nightmarish days and nights that the agents of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) laid siege to the Lagos residence of senator-elect, Prince Buruji Kashamu, despite valid and subsisting court orders directing them to vacate the place, we are pleased to announce that they have left the facility. They left at exactly 7:45pm.
But this was after the agency displayed a high level of brigandage and lawlessness that is only fit for a failed state.

However, we thank the almighty God for His infinite mercies. He is the one who thwarts the plans of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success.
We also salute the judiciary for once again rising to the occasion and proving yet that it is truly the last hope of the common man and the oppressed. We are grateful that the judiciary has again affirmed Prince Buruji Kashamu’s innocence of the charges against him, thus turning for good what was meant for evil.

Our appreciation also goes to the media, civil society groups, student bodies and all well-meaning Nigerians for their prayers, support and solidarity during the period.

After attending to his health, Prince Kashamu will address the media, Nigerians and the whole world on his ordeal and the intricate web of political intrigues behind the wicked attempt to abduct him for no just cause using the instrument and machinery of state.

Until then, we hope we can truly say the siege is over!

For the first time in 800 years, a woman is about to be appointed as VC of Oxford University.
The University of Oxford is to appoint its first female vice-chancellor since its records began nearly 800 years ago, after Prof Louise Richardson was nominated for the university’s most senior office.
Richardson, currently the principal and vice-chancellor of St Andrews University, is an expert on the growth of terrorist movements.
She held a succession of high-profile positions at Harvard until she was appointed to lead St Andrews in 2009.
Students and staff hailed the nomination as a momentous event in Oxford’s history. Richardson, 56, told the Guardian she hoped her nomination would inspire current and potential female undergraduates. (UK Guardian)

An unidentified Kenyan woman was rescued from River Kathita in Meru, Kenya today May 7th after a failed attempt to commit suicide following her inability to provide school fees for her children. Residents of the community who were using the river at the time she attempted suicide, saw her and saved her. So sad for her!

A mother, her three children, a relative and a house-help were all burnt to death in a fire incident at their home in Jos, Plateau state today May 2nd. According to residents in the area where the incident happened, the deceased woman called for help when the fire started but they could not go in to assist because of the strong iron bars used as protectors. While they tried to maneuver, the gas in the building exploded. 
 

"We had the shout of the woman saying come and help me, come and help me!. All of us ran out to see what we can do to help. In the process, any iron you touch will shock one so we quickly alerted the authorities, cut the cable line that supplied light to the house. In the process of going up, the gas cylinder exploded. In that case, we had nothing to do rather than to run and call the fire service" a neighbor said
The woman's husband was away on an official assignment when the incident happened. All the deceased have been buried according to muslim rites. May their souls rest in peace Amen.
