Ikpoba Okha wins Edo Sports festival, as Edo govt reiterates focus on grassroots sports The Edo State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has said the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration has resolved to make the Edo Sports Festival an annual event to serve as ground for discovering new sporting talents. He said this at the closing ceremony for the 3rd edition of the Edo Sports Festival held at the University of Benin Sports complex, in Benin City, Edo State capital. The 3rd edition of the Edo State Sports Festival ended with Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area (LGA) coming top on the medals table with 100 gold, 82 silver and 58 bronze medals; Owan West LGA came second with 74 gold, 53 silver and 66 bronze; while Egor LGA ranked third with 64 gold, 60 silver and 54 bronze. Shaibu commended the participating Local Government Councils and their athletes, adding that Edo State is set to become the sporting hub of the country, as the state government has refurbished and rebuilt most of the sporting facilities at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. He noted, “We will continue to develop our sporting facilities in the state beyond the National Sports Festival as we are building 20 new mini stadia across the 18 LGAs of the state. “Four of these stadia will serve the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium as training ground for National, CAF and FIFA games. We are also going to build three mini mega stadia. One would be located in Edo South (Etete), another at Edo Central (Ekpoma) while the third will be at Etsako West LGA.” Shaibu added, “Since Edo and Delta States went to recess in sports especially football, Nigeria now use calculators to determine what matches would be to enable us win trophies. We say no to this as we are back and now Nigeria will win its matches as well.” The deputy governor expressed the readiness of the state to commence closed door camping for athletes who will represent Edo State at the National Sports Festival, noting, “This festival was organised to select Edo State athletes for the National Sports Festival to be hosted here in our state. The game has sprung surprises, producing new talents that were not known before. This is the beginning of the return of sports to Edo State the land of sports.” The Chairman of Edo State Sports Commission, Dudu Orume, thanked the governor and his deputy for a well-organised sports festival in the state, adding that the state looks forward to a great outing at the 2020 NSF.

Automotive Training Centre’ll boost Obaseki’s job creation drive – FG The Federal Government has said the Automotive Training Centre being constructed by the Edo State Government in partnership with the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), will boost the state government’s job creation drive. The Senior Industrial Officer, NADDC, Eng. Philip Ianna, said this while addressing journalists after inspecting ongoing construction of the Automotive Training Centre in Benin City, the Edo State capital. He lauded Governor Obaseki for collaborating with the NADDC to provide a centre for training youths and boosting job creation, noting, “We are convinced that this training centre is going to be impactful.” The Edo State Focal Person, Social Investment Programme, Aladeselu Osayuwamen, said the state government is collaborating with the NADDC to provide an opportunity for youths to acquire skills in automotive repair and maintenance. “We are here to see the level of readiness of the centre so that we can ascertain when to kick off operations. We are eager to kick-off training at the centre because Governor Godwin Obaseki has a strong desire to equip youths with skills to lead better lives,” she said. Aladeselu added, “We have been looking forward to having something like this and it gives us great joy to partner with NADDC. We are assessing every section to see how comfortable it will be for the trainees. This is because it will be a unisex training Center. We know automobile maintenance is male-dominated, but this centre will accommodate both sexes.” On completion of construction work, the Automotive Training Centre will boast of top-of-the-range facilities, including parking space, training room, mechanical workshop, compressor room, tools storeroom and general workshop, among others. |
EdoJobs trains over 500 youths on data science, artificial intelligence, others The Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs) has trained over 500 youths in the three senatorial districts of the state on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills in furtherance of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s technology innovation drive. The Managing Director, EdoJobs, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Benin City, said the training programmes are targeted at equipping youths with the right skillsets to build careers in Nigeria’s burgeoning technology scene. She noted that 50 participants are currently undergoing courses on data science and artificial intelligence, as 500 others have participated in the programme since its commencement. Dare said the next phase of the training would take place in Auchi, Ekpoma, Irrua and Igbesanmwan communities, with each center training 33 people. The director said EdoJobs has continued to lead extensive skills development programmes across the state, which contribute significantly to the over 150,000 jobs created by the Obaseki-led government, adding that Edo State has leveraged on human capacity building in creating the skilled manpower required to drive its industrialisation plans. “The state government has prioritized training in information and communication technologies to drive societal development. This is why we are leveraging on ICT skills and training to engage youths in Edo State. “We are confident that these trainings will equip our youths with skills and the expertise to pursue careers in science and technology while providing them with the needed insight to thrive in the ICT-dominated digital world.” She said skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development programmes are opportunities for more youths to gain sellable skills that would make them stand out as entrepreneurs and employers of labour. She continued: “Entrepreneurship development will further address the problem of poverty, hunger, unemployment, and ever-rising criminality among youths. EdoJobs has continued to lead extensive skills development programmes across the state in furtherance of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s vision to tackle unemployment in Edo State.” Dare noted that several training programmes are ongoing at the Edo Innovation Hub in Benin City, which is the hub of the technology and innovation programmes of the state government. |
Place Ize-Iyamu, EPM under surveillance, Edo govt urges security agencies The Edo State Government has called on all relevant security agencies to place the former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and other members of the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) under close surveillance in order to put an end to the sudden rise in the use of explosives to create a sense of insecurity in the state. In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie said the security alert had to be sent because of the desperation of Ize-Iyamu and members of the EPM to throw the state into chaos to achieve their Machiavellian aims. According to him, “With Ize-Iyamu and his colleagues in the EPM unhappy with the recent peace and reconciliation committee led by the distinguished statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, we gathered that they plan to orchestrate more mayhem to scuttle the APC peace process in Edo and possibly force President Muhammadu Buhari to declare a state of emergency in Edo State. “This is most unacceptable and we are placing the relevant security agencies on notice that they should keep a close watch on Ize-Iyamu and other members of the EPM. The Nigerian Police Force, the Nigerian Army as well as antibomb squad and other relevant security operatives should monitor him and his acolytes closely.” He continued: “It bears repeating that we did not witness any bomb blast in Edo State for a long time until the coming of Pastor Ize-Iyamu into the party. Before now, he had the reputation of being the only politician who falsely accused people of bombing his property, when it was obvious that he stage-managed such bombings. So, the resurgence of bombing in Edo in the wake of his coming only points to the fact that he brought such crude tactics with him to the EPM.”

Ize-Iyamu, EPM working towards a State of Emergency in Edo – Ohonbamu …insists Obaseki not prone to violence The Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Hon. Paul Ohonbamu, has said the former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Osagie Ize-Iyamu and members of the proscribed Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) are working towards forcing the Federal Government to declare a State of Emergency in the state. This followed the use of explosives and other dangerous weapons by persons linked to the group in causing mayhem and heating up the political space in Edo State. Ohonbamu, who spoke with journalists in Benin City, reiterated that the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki is not prone to violence and has nothing to gain in threatening the lives of opposition members. He said it was laughable that the bombings have continued to follow the same pattern, noting, “In the past two weeks, we have had incidents of bombings in the state allegedly orchestrated by the members of the Edo People Movement (EPM) who went ahead to point accusing fingers to the Obaseki-led administration. “The genesis of the whole problem started with the inauguration of the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) as the group, EPM, accused the governor forgetting that he doesn't inaugurate the House but rather issues proclamation. They tried to use the National Assembly, the Senate and Federal House of Representatives against the governor but failed. Now their option is to resort to bombings to create the impression that the state is not safe so that the President will declare a state of emergency in Edo State,” he added. He noted, “The recent moves in deploying bombings have merely portrayed their weakness and fear of electoral defeat. The defeat is sure and it is in fixed deposit. Osagie Ize-Iyamu was defeated before and will be defeated again any time any day. What is happening now is not a surprise as the intention of the EPM is to embarrass the Edo State Government by creating the impression that the state is not safe and the government is not doing well in terms of security but their plans have failed. “Violence is a vice, which Ize-Iyamu imbibed right from childhood as Oshiomhole told us how Ize-Iyamu bathed people with acid while the pastor was schooling in the University of Benin (UNIBEN).” The commissioner urged the people of Edo State to remain calm as the state remains peaceful, adding, “There is no cause for alarm as the security architecture is effectively keeping the state safe for all who reside in the state. The EPM wants to create the impression that the state is not safe, so that President Muhammadu Buhari will declare a state of emergency in Edo State. They should wait till the party primary and show how strategic they are by winning.”

Obaseki, Edo APC hail inauguration of party’s nat'l reconciliation c'ttee ...prepare for commencement of peace process …Edo APC condemns politically-motivated bomb attacks The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has commended the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Reconciliation Committee led by renowned elder statesman, Chief Bisi Akande, noting that the state government is ready for the peace process to commence. In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the state government is enthusiastic to receive the committee in the state so that genuine reconciliation can start in earnest. Meanwhile, the Edo State Chapter of the APC has also lauded the reconstitution of the reconciliation committee, affirming their faith and acceptance of the committee, “considering the integrity, forthrightness and objectivity of its members.” According to the governor, “We are excited with the inauguration of the APC National Reconciliation Committee set up by President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of our great party. We are eager to engage with the committee led by Chief Bisi Akande so that the peace process can begin in earnest. He added that the different organs of the party in the state are ready to participate in the reconciliation exercise, as they are confident that the true state of affairs of the party especially the progress made and efforts to foster unity would be disclosed to the committee. “As a people beholden to law and order, we are sure that justice will be done in the matter after all the issues emanating therefrom are examined.” Meanwhile, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC in Edo, Pastor Joseph Osagiede, said the state chapter would “cooperate fully with the committee and provide it with useful, factual and incontrovertible facts to aid its work.” He added, “Our reservations with respect to the previous committees set up for this same assignment were borne out of the principles of Natural Justice and not to do with the integrity of those party leaders concerned who, by the way, we hold in very high esteem. “We hereby express gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders of our Party who have shown sensitivity to the issues raised in our previous objections.” On the rising spate of political motivated bomb attacks in the state, Osagiede said “We wish to express our discomfiture with the recent spate of bombings and other forms of violence recorded in the state recently. “it is, however, significant to note the speed by which some of the alleged victims have accused His Excellency, Governor Godwin Negheghase Obaseki of being behind these ‘attacks’. The speed to reach that conclusion even before the police have investigated these cases makes us very circumspect of the so-called attacks. Also significant is that no lives were lost and the damage done is seemingly superficial.” He continued, “The governor has never been known to be associated with violence in any form or shape; rather, it is some of his accusers who have been known to be associated with a history of violence including allegations and counter allegations of bombing. “We therefore wish to condemn violence in all its ramification as a means of setting political scores and to state unequivocally that it is not in the character of the APC.” |
'Ize-Iyamu, EPM, others have resorted to using explosives to destabilise Edo' The Edo State Government has flayed allegations made by the former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Osagie Ize-Iyamu, over the rising spate of political violence in the state, noting that the resort to violence is the stock in trade of Ize-Iyamu, the suspended National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and their cohorts in the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM). In a statement, Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the state chapter of the APC was peaceful until the EPM and its enablers commenced their nefarious activities across the state. According to him, “We are quite flustered that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole has not been able to rein in his people in the face of the reconstitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Reconciliation Committee, tasked to restore lasting peace in the party both in the state and across the country. We are committed to peace and would do right by the people of Edo State by continually supporting all credible means to arrive at a lasting peace in the state. “At the same time, we want to state clearly that Ize-Iyamu, Comrade Oshiomhole and their cohorts are the common denominators of political violence in Edo State. “On the 19th of October, 2014, this same Ize-Iyamu announced that his house along Dennis Osadebey Way, GRA, Benin City, where his wife carries out her dental practice was bombed and at that time, he pointedly stated that Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, who was then governor of the state, was responsible for the attack. From that time till now, there has been a cessation of the use of explosives and other dangerous weapons in causing mayhem and heating up the political space in the state. “It is therefore rather curious that with the same Ize-Iyamu coming back into the political space in the last three months, extreme political violence has resurfaced with bombs going off in parts of the state and gunmen attacking politically-exposed persons.” He continued, “We have stated before that the EPM, under the sponsorship of Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu and others, having lost out of the political powerplay in the state and failed repeatedly in their inordinate quest to seize power from Governor Godwin Obaseki through undemocratic means, have now resorted to violence to create a sense of a breakdown of law and order with the intent of forcing the declaration of a State of Emergency in the state. He urged the Presidency and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to call Comrade Oshiomhole, Ize-Iyamu and their cohorts in the EPM to order so that the destructive descent to violence does not erode the good legacies that have been built over the years by the APC in Edo State. He also assured Edo people of government’s resolve to maintain law and order, and ensure that the peace and safety in the state is not threatened by whatever means.

Edo govt welcomes reconstituted APC Nat’l Reconciliation C’ttee … expresses gratitude to President Buhari … confident in Akande’s role as c’ttee chair The Edo State Government has applauded the reconstitution of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Reconciliation Committee, expressing confidence that the committee will deliver on its mandate to restore peace and unity in the party. In a statement, Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie Esq., said the state government is “grateful to President Muhammadu Buhari for putting together a committee of persons with proven integrity and the forthrightness needed to deliver on this very sensitive national assignment.” He added, “With the person of the renowned statesman and leader of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande, heading this committee, and other very worthy leaders of our party as members, we have no doubt that justice will not only be done but seen to be done in the execution of the mandate of this committee. “We hereby restate our full commitment to peace in the APC both in our state and across the country. “Despite the many challenges, APC has remained strong in Edo State and in Nigeria, but we are certain that at the end of this exercise, the party will become even stronger and continue to lead our great country with its progressive ideals for many years to come.” Earlier, the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Mallam Issa-Onilu, said President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reviewed the membership of the party’s National Reconciliation Committee. The 12-member committee, according to him, has Chief Bisi Akande as Chairman and Sen. John Enoh as Secretary. Other members of the committee include Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello; Governor of Osun State, Adegboyega Oyetola; Senate Leader, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi; Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase; Sen. Umaru Tanko Al-Makura; Sen. Kashim Shettima; Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor; Alh. Nasiru Aliko Koki; Sen. Khairat Gwadabe-Abdulrazak and Sen. Binta Garba. “The Committee is empowered to address grievances of party members across the country and resolve existing conflicts, all with a view to fostering oneness, strengthen the party for better governance and ensure unity of purpose within the party,” he added.

Lassa fever outbreak: Edo govt extends support to Irrua Specialist Hospital, donates 200 protective equipment With the recent resurgence of Lassa fever across endemic states in the country, the Edo State Government has firmed up mechanisms to fight the menace with the donation of 200 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, as part of efforts to curb the spread of the viral disease in the state. The state government under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki has over the years equipped the Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital with dialysis machines, ventilators, personal protective equipment and drugs, among others required for effective management and treatment of victims of the disease. Presenting the items, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia, who reassured the commitment of the Governor Obaseki-led administration in combating the scourge, said the donation was to arrest the spread of Lassa fever for the benefit of Edo people, and to protect caregivers from being affected. Commending the institute for its cooperation, the medical expert described the Irrua Specialist Hospital as a center of excellence in managing the outbreak of Lassa fever in the country. He further disclosed the state government has put measures in place to control the spread of the viral disease into the state. Okundia advised the public to stick to hygienic practices and report all cases of febrile illness that are not responding to common treatment to the nearest standard health facility. Earlier, the Chief Medical Director of Irrua Specialist Hospital, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbeni who received the donated equipment on behalf of the hospital management, expressed appreciation to Governor Obaseki for his immediate response and keen interest in fighting the scourge. Recall that the state government had on Tuesday disclosed plans to intensify efforts geared towards curbing the spread of Lassa fever into the state. In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the state government’s efforts are being led by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu. He said the state government has a robust response system that is activated when cases of Lassa Fever are reported, noting that the government has over the years invested in the strengthening of hospitals to manage the viral disease. |
Group backs Edo govt on sustainable peace initiatives A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Royal Ambassador Organisation of Nigeria, has declared support for the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s policies and programmes, targeted at ensuring sustainable peace across Edo. The Council Adviser, Royal Ambassador, Mr. Charles Irikefe Uwhujorho, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the governor, at Government House, in Benin City. The Royal Ambassador Organization of Nigeria is an arm of the Nigeria Baptist Convention, set up to kick against killings, kidnappings, cultism and political unrest in Nigeria. Uwhujorho said the group decided to show support for the state government’s campaign against cultism, thuggery, political unrest and other social vices, especially as the state prepares for the 2020 gubernatorial election. A representative of the governor and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Religious Matters, Pastor Eghosa Omoruyi, said Governor Godwin Obaseki has demonstrated to be a man of peace, adding, “The governor stands for peace and preaches peace because without peace no meaningful development can take place. He urged members of the group to take the message to youths across the state on the need to be responsible and embrace peace. The State Co-ordinator, Anti-Social Vices, Pastor Paul Arasomwan, said, “We are in Government House to lend our voice as Royal Ambassadors of Baptist Conference. Our aim is to preach peace and also tell our youths to shun violence, kidnapping and other social vices in our society. All we preach is peace. We are saying yes to peace.”

Edo govt ramps up efforts to curtail spread of Lassa Fever The Edo State Government has intensified efforts to curb the spread of Lassa fever into the state, in the wake of the resurgence of the viral disease across endemic states in the country. In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the state government’s efforts are being led by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu. He said the state government has a robust response system that is activated when cases of Lassa fever are reported, noting that government has over the years invested in the strengthening of hospitals to manage the viral disease. According to him, “The state has a standing Lassa Fever Committee that coordinates efforts to stem the spread of the viral disease into the state. They also serve to manage cases where such are reported. We have over the years worked to equip the Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control at the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital with four dialysis machines, ventilators, personal protective equipment and drugs required for effective treatment of victims and management of Lassa fever cases.” He noted that the committee is already hard at work with the recent cases of Lassa fever reported in neighbouring Ondo and Delta States. The governor’s aide said enlightenment programmes are being held across the state to sensitise the people against the spread of the disease. “Sensitisation programmes have commenced across the 18 local government areas of the state. This is coordinated by the committee. We are also keen on leveraging the partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) for efficient contact tracing and monitoring so as to be pro-active in handling the crisis. |
Residents in Edo North applaud Obaseki’s Health Improvement Programme With the Edo Health Improvement Programme (Edo-HIP) poised to improve the general wellbeing of Edo people, residents across the state have lauded the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration’s investment in attaining universal health coverage in the state, especially with the extensive work on Primary Healthcare Centres in rural communities. Commending the governor, residents and health workers in Edo State noted that with the revamping and remodeling of over 20 pilot primary healthcare centers across the 18 local governments in the state through the Edo-HIP, the state government has improved access to quality and affordable healthcare. Speaking to journalists, one of the health workers attached to Ugbekpe-Ekperi Comprehensive Health Center, in Etsako Central Local Government Area, Felix Isegbe, said the health centres now boast of steady supply of drugs, solar-powered electricity, modern data gathering technology and portable water supply. According to Mr. Isegbe, “Drugs were lacking in the past, but Governor Obaseki brought drugs; all the beddings were changed to new ones; new furniture was procured, and now patients are comfortable when they come here for treatment.” “In the past, we used to take delivery with torch lights because the centre was not connected to public electricity. Even during emergencies, we didn't have access to light. But with the installation of the solar power, we now have access to 24-hours electricity supply” he added. He said “If a patient is to deliver in the centre today, there is 24 hours electricity supply available. In taking seizuring cases, we now see light to use. We have regular supply of drugs and computer systems are deployed to capture the data of patients which equally appear on a dashboard in the governor's office. You can’t get this type of healthcare centre before Governor Obaseki assumed office. He has changed the system of operating PHCs by ensuring all that is needed and available in Specialist Hospital is here.” He said the healthcare facility has continued to record increase in number of persons who seek medical care. A patient in the PHC, Gloria Akhilomhe, said the provision of water facility has alleviated the plights of women who give birth in the centre, noting, “Before now, when women come here for delivery, they asked us to provide water from our homes. We now have water running 24-hours.”

Benin-Abraka Road reconstruction: Obaseki wants payment of NDDC counterpart fund The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to release its counterpart fund for the reconstruction of the 105.6-kilometre Benin-Abraka Road project, so as to intensify work on the project. The completion of the project is expected to be delivered through the co-financing arrangement contained in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) entered into by the Edo State Government, the NDDC and the Edo State Oil and Gas Producing Area Development Commission (EDSOGPADEC) with a financing ratio of 25%: 50%:25% respectively. Obaseki in a meeting with the Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs, Senator Tayo Alasoadura in Benin City said, “We have a contract with NDDC on the Benin-Abraka Road which has been awarded and construction has already commenced. But with almost nine months into the contract, we have not received payment of the contribution from NDDC even though we have a signed agreement of commitment from the commission. “This road project is quite significant because it is another road connecting Edo and Delta. This is one area we want to you to look into in order to expedite construction work on the road.” The governor continued, “We support the reorganisation that is currently taking place in the NDDC. I don't believe that there is any other state that has been deprived like Edo in terms of resources that were allocated to it through the NDDC as previous management of the commission have admitted and apologised that in terms of allocation, they did not achieve 20 per cent allocation performance in the state.” The governor expressed optimism that Edo State government will work better with the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs in ensuring that NDDC is no longer used as political slush fund but rather for the development of the region. The governor added that the state government would also collaborate with the ministry in housing development and electricity supply through an initiative, which will require the involvement of Edo, Delta and Ondo states.

Obaseki reels out impact of education, health, other reforms to Edo residents in Lagos …Danjuma, other indigenes endorse gov for second term The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has rolled out the impact of his administration’s reforms in basic education, primary healthcare, infrastructural development and other sectors of the state’s economy to Edo indigenes resident in Lagos. The governor spoke during a Townhall meeting themed, ‘Edo Okpa No’ organised by Unuedo Renaissance for indigenes of Edo State resident in Lagos State. The governor said pupils in secondary schools now learn three times more than they do in the old system while primary healthcare centers have been revamped to be better equipped, responsive and accessible. Speaking on behalf of the indigenes of Edo State resident in Lagos, former Senator, Edo South Senatorial District, Dr. Daisy Danjuma, said the governor has the support of the Edos in Lagos, commending him for prioritising the development of the state. Noting that her support for the governor remains despite the fact that she is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), she said, “I am a Board of Trustee (BoT) member of the PDP, but I support the governor and his policies. I support him for a second term. I am for development. Let us forget politics; Let’s develop.” Speaking on the focus of his government in developing Edo people to lead productive lives, the governor said, “We decided to focus on the fundamentals. We focused on people and on education, healthcare, security and jobs. Our development efforts are focused on developing our people, building infrastructure, and creating the space for economic prosperity. “We have strengthened the education system, which is what the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme is about. If one doesn’t have literacy and numeracy skills, such a person won’t be able to survive in the world. That is why we implemented the Edo-BEST programme. We thank God that the world has acknowledged that we have gotten it right. “Today, we have about 300,000 pupils in our public primary school system. I can tell you when a teacher or pupil is in class or when they have completed their lessons, from my office through technology.” On reforms in the agricultural sector, he said the state government has recorded immense success with its agripreneur programme, which has impacted a lot of youths in the state. “We are rebuilding the schools of agriculture. We have asked Okomu Plc, Nigeria Institute for Oil Palm Research (NIFOR), Presco Plc and others to sit on the board of our schools of agriculture. This is so that they can teach the people they need to employ,” he added. Continuing on why the Edos are successful, the governor said the success of Edo people is ingrained in their makeup as evidenced in the exploits of the Benin Kingdom, which attained sophisticated civilization and has thrived for thousands of years. According to him, “We have a rich colonial heritage; we know who we are. We are Edo people. We have built infrastructure for thousands of years. Without bulldozers, we built the world’s largest earthwork known as the Benin moat. Without modern cutting tools, we created artworks that adorn museums across the world. He said the reason why Edo people have excelled over thousands of years is because they possess natural endowment that others didn’t. some of them are existent in us today. one of the them is location. It is responsible for the influential empire. “We are focused on primary healthcare. We have built the facilities. They have water, electricity and security,” he added. On security, the governor said the state government has gotten the Nigerian Police to provide a helicopter in the state, which makes 3-hour strategic patrol of the airspace. “There have been a number of reports in the area on kidnappings. With the help of the helicopter, we have been able to rescue some of those kidnapped. We hope to do more,” he said.

*Edo APC to Airhiavbere, Ize-Iyamu, others: You are driven by greed* _… ‘Ize-Iyamu currently charged by EFCC for N700m fraud’_ _… ‘Airhiavbere under suspension from APC’_ The Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed a press conference held by members of the proscribed group, the Edo Peoples Movement, saying their agitations are fueled by greed and avarice. Further discrediting their submissions, Chairman of the APC, Edo State, Barr. Anselm Ojezua, said two of the anchors of the meeting were bugled with severe malfeasance. According to Ojezua, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who he described as Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s mercenary of distraction, is currently facing Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charges of N700m fraud at a High Court in Benin City, while Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd) is currently suspended by the party in his local government area. He described other participants in the press conference, including former Minister of State, Works, Engr. Chris Ogiemwonyi and former Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu, as individuals who were on life support politically. Ojezua said, “These dissidents, out of their greed and in reaction to the refusal of Governor Obaseki to share the state’s patrimony in satisfaction of their avarice, formed the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) and began their agitation against the government, which have all failed. “Their latest resort is this press conference aimed at extricating themselves from the consequences of the crisis, which they caused. One of the actors, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd), is currently suspended from the party in his local government area for anti-party activities, which resulted from his decision to work against President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC National Assembly candidates in the last general elections. “As for Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, he is simply a mercenary recruited by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to accentuate the political tension in the APC and Edo State, even though he is still on his long walk towards becoming a member of the party; his membership is still in abeyance. Meanwhile, he has started executing his ignoble assignment from Comrade Oshiomhole of creating tension in the party. He is currently facing a N700m-fraud charge brought against him by the EFCC.” “Their action is taken in realisation of the fact that all attempts they have made in conspiracy with Comrade Adams Oshiomhole to destabilise the government in Edo State and create political distraction have failed.” Ojezua maintained that in general, Edo people and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) both at home and abroad, understand the agitation of these individuals and are in firm support of Governor Godwin Obaseki and his administration. On some of the issues raised at the conference, Ojezua said it was unfortunate that the dissidents do not understand the concept of party supremacy. He noted, “The supremacy of the party is embedded in the rules contained in the constitution of the party, and not rested on any party officer, no matter how highly place. Everyone who is a member of the party must bow to the party’s constitution. “Bowing to the whims and caprices of any individual no matter how highly placed when such a person is acting in violation of the constitution of the party does not amount to upholding party supremacy. “Party supremacy does not rest in Abuja alone, but must be respected at every level of the party, from the ward, local government area, state and national levels. The national officers of the party, no matter how highly placed, must subject themselves to the supremacy of the party at these levels.” He continued, “In one breath, they speak of the rule of law, yet in another they pay tribute to one Col. David Imuse (rtd) as chairman of the party in the state when there is a subsisting court order restraining him from parading himself as Chairman of the APC in Edo State. That same court ordered for status quo of Anselm Ojezua’s chairmanship of the party be maintained.” On the call for a fresh proclamation of the House of Assembly, Ojezua said, “these individuals who claim to be apostles of the rule of law, have repeatedly condemned the proclamation of the Edo State House of Assembly by the Edo State Governor, when a court of competent jurisdiction specifically the Federal High Court, sitting in Port Harcourt, not only upheld the proclamation, but also restrained the governor from repeating the process. “Even the current Chief Justice of State, Hon. Justice Edigin, subjected herself to the authority of the 7th Edo State House of Assembly, which these so-called democrats have continuously vilified. Speaking on the National Reconciliation Committee set up by the APC’s National Working Committee, he said, “It must be known that we are not averse to reconciliation. However, the constitution of any National Reconciliation Committee must be done with respect to the dictates of Natural Justice. Parties to a dispute should not be allowed to adjudicate on matters where they have shown reasonable interest. This is the defect of the Reconciliation Committee set up by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and a few associates within the National Working Committee. “While we support the constitution of a Reconciliation Committee to clear the mess caused by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and a few dissidents within Edo APC, it will be best constituted by President Muhammadu Buhari, who is the National Leader of the party, as was decided in the last National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja.” |
*Why EPM members are running from pillar to post* *_Oshiomhole's days are numbered as Nat'nl chair_- source* *Abuja jamoboree will soon be over, with Buhari's nod for Comrade's removal* More details have emerged on why the rag-tag group of failed politicians under the auspices of the proscribed group EPM, who are parading themselves as APC members held a press conference with journalists in Benin, earlier today. The dissent EPM members, spiked by the suspension of the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhiole by his ward and subsequent calls for his resignation by the National Working Committee of the APC, converged to create false semblance of a base for the suspended party chairman. But the meeting, which observers say ended in disarray, failed in accomplishing its mission of Edo deceivng Edo people. Already, President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the removal of the APC National Chair, and a committee would soon be set to work in that regard. According to an inside source who spoke to journalists after the kangaroo meeting, "The meeting ended without reaching any decision. Edo people can see through the facade and will not be deceived by a set of failed politicians. Edo people are wiser than they think. The days of the national chairman in the party are numbered. He is busying running from pillar to post in Abuja, lobbying party members but his efforts are in vain." He continued,"President Buhari has retrieved his support for the national chairman because of his highhandnessness and greed. Soon, his sack will be sealed and peace will return to APC and Edo State. "Even attempts by 'Adamu' to use the recent victory of the party with regards to the supreme court judgement that returned the candidate of the APC, Hope Uzodinma as governor of Imo State to bolster his case to remain as the party chairman is dead on arrival as President Buhari remains adamant on his ouster. |
Anti-Party Activities: Oredo LGA APC panel concludes investigation, expels Airhiavbere The Oredo Local Government Area All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled General Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd.) from the party after a report from the panel it set up to investigate allegations of anti-party activities levelled against the one-time governorship aspirant of the party confirmed that he actually engaged in the act. Following accusations from leaders and members of Oredo ward 01 APC against Airhiavbere and his subsequent suspension, the leadership of the party at the local government level set up a panel to investigate the veracity of the claim against the politician. Airhiavbere who contested against Adam Oshiomhole for the governorship seat on the platform of the PDP in 2012 and lost in all 18 local government areas of the state was indicted by the panel which was chaired by Hon. Raymond Olaye. The panel, inaugurated by chairman of Oredo LGA APC, Hon. Godswill Alabi, on 20th march, 2019, at the APC Secretariat, 33 Uwa Street, Off M. M. Way, was given the mandate to “ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the allegation of Anti-Party activities levelled against Gen. Airhiavbere during the 2019 Presidential and National Assembly Elections, by members of APC Ward 01 in the letter to the LGA chairman dated 15th March, 2019.” In the earlier petition, the ward executives and members recommended the suspension of Gen. Airhiavbere from the party, and sought for the next line of disciplinary action from the party. According to the panel’s final report, after its constitution, the letter to the Oredo LGA APC was reviewed and it invited Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd), Samson Abu and Ward I Chairman, Ward I Executives and all members of the Ward, who are signatories to the letter, for further investigation. “The letters were delivered in person by the Secretary of the Committee to the invitees, except Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd.) whose security detail received it on his behalf after signing the acknowledgement of the receipt of the letter. “The panel continued sitting on 23rd March, 2019, with all the members present as well as all those invited except Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd.) who refused to appear before the panel,” it said in its report. The panel added that all those invited were able to substantiate their allegations against Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd) by oral evidence before the panel. The panel explained that during the cross-examination, it found the following, “that Gen. Charles Airhiavbere deliberately withheld and delayed the release of party logistics to the various unit heads at Garrick and Uyiosa voting centers, which aversely hampered their ability to function effectively during the election on the 23rd of February, 2019. “Gen. Charles Airhiavbere directed the unit heads at Garrick and Uyiosa voting centers to report to his house in the midst of the election which led to the abandonment of their duty post to create room for the opposition to exploit. “That Gen. Charles Airhiavbere openly and systematically canvassed for vote for the opposition party and gave APC agent’s tags to his boys who had decamped to the PDP a week earlier.” The panel consequently found “Gen. Charles Airhiavbere culpable of the allegations leveled against him by APC Ward 01, Oredo chapter. And that he breached Article 21A; II and III of the APC constitution as amended.” It therefore elevated the punishment from suspension given at the ward level to expulsion owing to the gravity of the offence. Other members of the panel include Hon. Mathew Ikponmwosa-Eagle, as Secretary; Chief Sunny Erhengbo, member; Mr. Emmanuel Aiguobasinmwin, member; Barr. Hope Ajayi; Mr. Finnan Ukwute, member and Mrs. Elizabeth Uwaifo as member. *Sources:* https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/03/apc/ https://www.thisdaylive.com/…/anti-party-activities-oredo-…/ https://thebellng.com/anti-party-activities-oredo-lga-apc-…/ https://www.nairaland.com/509…/oredo-lga-apc-panel-concludes The Oredo Local Government Area All Progressives Congress (APC) has expelled General Charles Airhiavbere (Rtd.) from the party after a report from the panel it set up to investigate allegations of anti-party activities levelled against the one-time governorship aspirant of the party confirmed that h... APC leaders in Oshiomhole’s Ward endorse Obaseki for second term …insist party national chair’s suspension stands The leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Comrade Adams Oshiomhole’s Ward 10, Etsako West Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, have endorsed Governor Godwin Obaseki’s re-election bid. The leaders gave their endorsement during a visit to the governor at Government House, in Benin City, on Monday. The Chairman of the APC in Ward 10, Etsako West LGA, Mr. Oshawo Stephen, who led other executive members of the Ward to declare support for the governor’s second term bid, said, “We came to visit our Governor for the new the year, to pray for him so that God will continue to elevate him for his good works in Edo State.” He described the governor’s performance in the past three years as excellent, urging the Governor Obaseki to continue his good works in developing the state. Oshawo said the suspension of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole in his ward in Etsako West still stands over his role in sponsoring the crisis rocking the party in the state. On his part, Edo State Chairman of the APC, Barr. Anselm Ojezua said the visit by the leaders from Ward 10 of the APC in Etsako West to the governor was heartwarming, noting, “You know that under the current circumstances, you will expect that people at the ward level would have been put under extreme pressure by now. You can understand their situation. “But as you can see, these men and women are determined that justice must prevail in APC in Edo State and to that extent, I am grateful to them.” The APC Youth Leader in Etsako West LGA, ThankGod Okhumavha, said the leaders of the APC from the local government area came to identify with the governor who has continued from where his predecessor stopped, adding, “We want the governor to continue because he is performing well. If there is a third tenure, we are ready to give him. “The suspended National Chairman wanted his authority to prevail but we said no. We want the world to know that Oshiomhole has been suspended from the APC at his ward and local government area. It is illegal for Oshiomhole to continue to parade himself as national chairman of the APC. He cannot call for any meeting for us to attend.” He said Comrade Oshiomhole who promised to fight godfatherism has transformed himself into a godfather, alleging that Oshiomhole attempted to bribe an executive of APC at his ward so that he would support him to go against the will of the people. |
Obaseki’s job creation drive: EdoJobs partners ITF, Siemens, others for tech, innovation trainings in 2020 The Edo State Skills Development Agency also known as EdoJobs has disclosed plans to strengthen partnership with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Siemens, Coven Labs and other multinational companies for bespoke trainings in technology, innovation and solution-focused empowerment programmes in 2020. Managing Director of EdoJobs, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, who said this in a chat with journalists, noted that the agency was looking to surpass Governor Godwin Obaseki’s promise to create 200,000 jobs at the end of his first term in office. According to her, “We will be having a loaded 2020 as we plan to strengthen partnership with local and international partners to ensure that we surpass the governor’s target to create more than 200,000 jobs at the end of his first term in office. “We have concluded plans with the ITF to train youths on Information and Communication Technology (ITF). This will ensure that we have the right manpower in the state to compete in the new world order, where technology reigns supreme. This is in line with the state government’s plans to provide youths with necessary skillset to realise their full potentials.” She added that the state government would also partner with Siemens for another edition of the Hackathon, during which youths in the state would be tasked to provide homegrown solutions to environmental, energy, logistics and ecommerce challenges. “These trainings will be held at the Edo Innovation Hub in Edo South, while others will hold in Edo North and Edo Central. This is to spread development to different parts of the state. We are confident that these programmes will change the lives of youths in the state in 2020. We will also be partnering with CovenLabs to train about 5 to 6 cohorts in the data science programme.” |
Edo residents laud Obaseki’s stance against godfatherism, urge gov to shun detractors Impressed by the ongoing reforms of key economic growth drivers by the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration across the state, residents in Edo State have urged the governor to shun his detractors and remain focus on delivering long-term infrastructure assets. A cross-section of the residents, who spoke to journalists, maintained that Governor Obaseki’s style of governance which priorities access to quality education and the provision of enduring infrastructural facilities, has won their admiration. Mr. Richard Evbuomwan who resides in Orhionmwon said, “With all what the Governor Godwin Obaseki, is doing to transform the state, I think he deserves supports than the needless detractions from a few members of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). “There is no sector where the governor is not making an impact, from education, agriculture, health to job creation and skills development programmes for our youths. Anybody who means well for the state will enjoin the governor to do more. Governor Obaseki should please shun his detractors.” He added that with the much Governor Obaseki-led administration is doing, more investment is sure to flow into the state and they will create viable means for wealth creation so that more people will be gainfully employed. “We have seen how the governor has attracted the support of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the oil palm business. This will only translate to more opportunities for wealth creation for our people. Governor Obaseki is restoring the lost glory of Edo State," he said. Evbuomwan said, “Governor Obaseki has continued to demonstrate that good governance is about putting the needs of the people first than the interests of any individual or group.” Another resident, Mrs. Susan Ighodaro, lauded the governor for the state government’s health insurance programme which will make quality healthcare services affordable and accessible. “The governor deserves praise for the health insurance package for every resident in the state. It is impressive that people like us who don’t have formal employment will also have access to quality healthcare services.” Ighodaro added, “Governor Obaseki should remain focus on his vision and not allow himself to be swayed by the distractions orchestrated by few politicians.” |
The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has commended the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari to implementing the ‘visa on arrival’ policy for all Africans visiting Nigeria, saying it is a move that will encourage Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the country. The governor, who spoke to journalists on arrival at the Benin Airport after a trip with the President to Egypt, said the initiative, which is a trend among many countries in the continent, will encourage movement of persons, businesses and other transactions. Obaseki had accompanied President Muhammadu Buhari on a 2-day official visit to Egypt for the Aswan Forum. He said the summit focused on conflict, peace and development in Africa and also looked at the devastating effect of insurgency in the Nigeria’s North East and how peace building and development of the affected areas could be achieved. “The conference was on conflict, peace and development in Africa. The issue discussed is on insurgency and its effect in the Northeast of Nigeria. How it has affected development focusing on the way to resume peace building and development in the affected areas,” he said. He added that top on the agenda at the conference was human trafficking and irregular migration as issues of resettlement as well as addressing and reducing the incidents of people wanting to leave their homes. “The commitment of the President to receive visitors into Nigeria issuing them visa on arrival is a welcome development as it would encourage foreign direct investment. It is the trend today as Kenya has embraced the policy and many nationalists get visa on arrival in Kenya. It helps facilitate businesses and transaction on the continent of Africa, knowing that we need a lot of private sector investment, particularly Foreign Direct Investment.” He said what is of more concern to Edo State is the issue of human trafficking and irregular migration, noting, “Our concern is the issue of human trafficking and irregular migration which lead to displacement of people. The conference gave us the opportunity to discuss resettlement and what to do to address as well as reduce the incident of people wanting to leave home.” “I had the opportunity to discuss with Mr. President on how to help the state to deal with the issue of human trafficking and irregular migration,” he added. |

Obaseki reiterates resolve to curb corruption, sustain transparency, probity in govt The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has reiterated his resolve to curb corruption in government by deploying technology in engendering transparency and probity and also improving workers’ welfare so as to discourage them from seeking undue benefit in the line of duty. The governor said this in commemoration of the International Anti-Corruption Day marked every December 9 by the United Nations and its agencies. The governor said that a lot of reforms have been implemented in the state, targeted at ensuring corrupt tendencies are checked, noting, “We are well aware that there is a tendency to abuse one’s office to enrich oneself. That is why we have taken a tough stance on misdemeanor and corrupt acts.” He said the Edo State Government has collaborated with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in prosecuting public officials that run afoul of the law, even as ties are being strengthened with the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) in curbing corruption in the public service. He said, “We have a number of government officials who are facing trial as a result of our stance that those who abuse their offices answer to the crime. This has happened in the state civil service as well as the local government level, where some chairmen were found wanting and have been removed through the instrumentality of the law.” He stressed that the state government will continue to provide leadership in ensuring probity and transparency in government with its open governance system and its subscription to ideals and pacts that allow its book to be open to scrutiny by members of the public, especially with documents such as the budget. The governor added that another strategy to cut off corruption is the automation of government processes as well as the improvement of workers’ welfare, which ensures they are well motivated to deliver on the job and shun corrupt tendencies. |
